On this visit, I opted for the daily special, a boneless New York strip smoked to a perfect medium rare. The smoking process transformed the steak into an exceptionally tender cut, one so yielding that even a plastic knife sliced through it with ease. No sweet BBQ sauce. Only sauce on the table is thin like water and says "Hot Sauce". Chopped (no pulled) pork is spicy, so if you can't tolerate some hot spice you won't like the chopped pork. They do have sliced pork that is just smoked with no sauce at all. Didn't try the brisket, sausage or chicken this trip. Skin-on potato salad was OK, but not as creamy as Rudy's. They also feature an in-store deli meat selection which looked pretty good. For me, the no sweet sauce is a deal breaker so I probably won't be back, but if you like spicy hot you will probably like it. That's the reason fir only 3 stars. read more

I've always enjoyed the food at Southside Market, but I'm disappointed with the direction they've gone on pricing and menu options. They've done away with the combo plates and traditional barbecue meals. Everything is now essentially à la carte. Want a sandwich? You pay for the sandwich and then pay separately for the meat. Want a baked potato? It's about $7 before adding meat. Salads are around $9 before meat. Brisket is approximately $34 per pound, chopped brisket around $30 per pound, and most other meats are $18-$20 per pound. The food is still good, and the staff has always been friendly, but the pricing has become hard to justify. A basic lunch for a family of three was nearly $60, and we weren't ordering anything extravagant. What really stood out was that we came in at lunchtime on a Friday and the restaurant was nearly empty. It feels like the current pricing model may be pushing customers away. I understand costs have gone up, but eliminating combo plates and making everything completely à la carte has made what used to be an affordable barbecue stop feel overpriced. Gave this restaurant another try today and another disappointing and last visit it was. Drive through order, brisket and turkey, beans and a salad. The brisket was so so so fatty and apparently if you are a drive through customer you get the worst of the worst cuts. It was terrible and almost $18 for a pile of fat. Thanks Southside. And don't get me started on the little thin turkey strips that I got. These were ridiculous and looked nothing like the sliced turkey breast on the menu. Worst turkey I've had a bbq place bar none. Don't know what is up with this location. Not your typical bbq experience. They even make ordering hard. Ordered the 2 meat plate, they murdered to brisket during carving. It was a little bit over on weight. Dude cut off the bark and put it aside in a bin. This was the retirement home version of bbq, no flavor on anything. Too many other bbq options nearby. read more

We haven't been to a southside bbq for many years due to not conveniently located so we were excited to have one in Leander. It's been open maybe a few weeks and we walked in for an early lunch, not many people before the lunch rush. I did not like that we could not visualize the sides to choose with combo meals, nor the meats. The meats were ok, I just don't feel that neither had enough smoked flavors, I like the fact that they weren't over seasoned or salty, but the lamb was very, very fatty, not much meat to pick off the bone. As people now were going through the lines, I truly felt like we were thoroughly ripped off with the amount of protein we got in the combos, especially on the rib plate. This is the second time we've eaten dinner at this Southside Market location. We love love love their Beef Sausage! We also ordered the Sausage Slammer and Pork Belly daily special. I love the Slammer so much! Normally I love the pork belly, but today it was a little dry. I'm thinking maybe because it was later in the day. Not sure, the flavor was good, just a little dry. We also got potato salad as our side, it's pretty good. Just needs a little salt added. We like that they have a self serve onion, jalapeño, pickle, and sauce bar. Next time I'll buy some packages of sausage to cook on my grill at home, so many options. We will be out of town so I didn't this time, but the jalapeño Monterey Jack sausage has my name written all over it! Next time for sure! They are very friendly and helpful at this location. The food both times I've come has been delicious. Pricing seems in line with other BBQ spots and they will help you build a plate from their à la carte items. It does always seem way less busy than the two restaurants next to it but that does not seem to be because they don't have nice staff or good food. I ordered the Friday pork belly special. It included 3 thick slabs of pork belly and I opted for the jalapeño cheddar sausage as my second meat. My sides were potato salad and Cole slaw. My wife had the baby back ribs with Mac and cheese and cole slaw. The portions were large (we brought home leftovers) and absolutely delicious! The meats were moist, full of flavor, and very tender. The sides were large. The condiments available at the counter included jalapeños, pickles, and sliced onions. The service was incredibly friendly and engaging. Our food was served up quickly with a smile. We couldn't finish everything so brought the leftovers home to enjoy later. The ambiance is pure Texas BBQ with deer heads mounted on the wall and Ronnie Milsap playing through the speakers. We couldn't have asked for more. Love their beef sausage. We usually buy two or three whole links already cooked. Mrs. Texas fries it up with some potatoes for a Slap Yo Momma Good meal. Their brisket, chicken, turkey and sides are mediocre. This holds true for ALL locations. They're not horrible, there's just better elsewhere. Haven't tried any other of their meats. Read other reviews before coming here. (*if try to look up street, not on Google Maps yet, as so new). Heard a lot of new restaurants are coming to this location. This is the first of many! I heard this BBQ place has a rich history with other locations around Austin. Read the story on the wall, of how this all "came to be" (* look on wall by restrooms). It did not dissapoint! When we first arrived on a Sunday around Noon, I was glad it was not over crowded. Another older couple and my husband and I walked in at same time. We told them to "go ahead, as was first time here", but they said they were also new too. For us "near-sighted" people, we had to walk up to almost from of the line area to read the menu above. They guys behind the counter were so helpful with any questions you had about the menu. We asked what the difference was between just getting the "Southside Combo Plate" versus "2 Meat combo" (does the 2-meat combo come with MORE meat). He said "No, both are same amount. So, I went with the Combo, as it had what I came for, and hear so much about, the Brisket and the Sausage (plus two sides and pickles and onions). I chose the mac and cheese and the potato salad. My husband got the 2-meat platter with Beef Rib and pork steak. His two sides was cole slaw and garden salad (*which was extra). They hand it to your quickly right there, and walk up to cashier. The hand pies by the cashier did not look that appitizing, so I opted for what I thought they were probably "known for" which was the banana pudding. After paying, they told me to walk over to counter by front door, and they would get me banana pudding. After we found a place to sit, I walked over. I guess, you can buy their meats there, and they have Blue Bell ice cream. I handed my ticked to the guy, and asked if I wanted it "for here or to go". I said "for here" and they scoop the pudding into a styrofoam bowl and add some vanilla wafers on top. (*Next time, I think I will wait until after my meal, and may take it home). When you go get your fountain drink, there are two cylinders with their BBQ sauces. They have "Original" and "Bold". You can pour into these small plastic cups, which after pouring, I think they need a different vessel, as the BBQ sauce comes out warm-to almost hot (*don't let your kids dispense on their own). Then, next to it, it had the pickles and onion station, and almost missed the mustard, and it was was small packets. For a place known for the sausage more, you would think they would put the mustard in same type of dispensing thing. Once we sat, they had a BIG bottle of their "hot sauce", which I guess they make. We always read the ingredients, as my husband loves hot sauce. And, you can tell, good ones, like "Cholula", lists "peppers first"..but brands like Tabasco, list "vinegar" first. So, did their brand. My husband tasted it, and was very "vinegary"..LOL! The sausage DID live up to it's hype and I thought it was great, but went back for those mustard packets. The brisket was good flavor, but just a little dry. I liked the BOLD BBQ sauce better then their original, and my husband agreed. I tried his pork steak which was good flavor. The rib, was like two stuck together, and again a little dry. I did not like the potato salad, as it had "onions" in it, so I gave it to my husband. I did like the mac and cheese. I like the ones that are more "thick" and not "runny" like some BBQ tries to do. I tried my husband's cole slaw and I liked it. He thought it needed more sauce. The salad was just a basic salad, but was good. But, the banana pudding was good, and nice ending to the meal. We said we would be back and try maybe the sandwiches. We have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Southside BBQ's Leander location, having driven past the Elgin location many times. We went at around 4:45 on a Friday-early, but that was intentional, as the line was much much longer by the time we left. We ordered the southside special combo plate, which was brisket and sausage with two sides, a chopped brisket potato, and 2 kids meals. The kids meals were a meat sandwich (choice of chopped brisket, turkey, or sausage), one side, and a drink. For our kids, we had one chopped brisket and one turkey-Mac and cheese sides for both. We loved the chopped and sliced brisket and the turkey. Be aware if you are getting the turkey for kids that the rub is rather peppery/spicy. We had to cut the edges off so our "I don't eat anything with any spice" kid would eat it. That being said, the turkey was awesome and we happily ate the bits he wouldn't. The sausage casings were crisp but not as flavorful as expected-definitely the weaker of the options. The sides we tried were the beans, potato salad, and Mac and cheese. We really enjoyed the Mac and cheese: it was more of a baked casserole style than a pile of ooey gooey cheese. We topped off our meal with a banana pudding, as any proper BBQ meal should conclude. The restaurant also has a meat market area when you first enter, and a huge viewing window to the meat smoking area-which our kids loved. First of all Southside Market is very sub par when it comes to barbque, but when they try to charge you an arm and a leg for babyback ribs, they lost their minds. They wanted $63 for one rack of ribs NO SIDES, and their ribs tend to have a lot of overcooked, dried out jerky parts to their end tips. Even high end steak houses don't charge $63 for one rack of ribs. It was 5:30PM, their parking lot was empty and Willie's Ice House and Texas Roadhouse were directly next door and their parking lots were full. Just FYI... Full rack of ribs with two sides is $27 at Texas Roadhouse. Southside is too full of their own hype. Rudy's by far is so much better. read more

I had high expectations for this new spot in Leander. We went on a Tuesday around 6pm and the staff was friendly. We had two different plates with chicken, sausage and brisket. Compared to other barbecue restaurants in Austin the food was below average. The sausage was good tasting but not remotely warm. The brisket was a tad dry, which made the flavor suffer and the chicken was decent. It's decorated like many other barbecue restaurants in central Texas. They serve Coke products here and have sides like pickles and onions at the fixings bar. I can't recommend this location at this time when there are so many barbecue joints around and so little time. read more

They steal!!!!!!!! I placed a $100 order (yes, ONE HUNDRED dollars including tip) through Southside Market & Barbeque's website for delivery and this turned into the most ridiculous experience I've had with any restaurant. After waiting an hour and a half, I get a text saying my order was canceled. No explanation. No call. Nothing. Meanwhile, DoorDash had JUST notified me that my order was being picked up. I call the store and they tell me they didn't cancel it and blame Toast. The girl on the phone even says my order is "sitting right there." So which is it? Canceled or sitting there?? I call Toast, and after some convincing, they tell me it was actually the STORE that canceled it. So now I'm getting the runaround. Fast forward a week and a half later... I realize I was STILL CHARGED for food I NEVER RECEIVED. I call again and get the same finger-pointing nonsense. "Call Toast." No accountability, no urgency, no customer service. I had to push just to get someone to even attempt to fix it. Eventually, they say I'll get a refund. Great, right? WRONG. I get refunded $40... out of $100. For food I NEVER GOT. At this point, this isn't poor service... it's theft. Plain and simple. Do not order from them. Do not use their website. We have eaten here four times since this location opened and we are not impressed. There is something off with this location. We just can not figure it out. The bbq overall is avg at best. The chicken is hit or miss and the sausage is not very good. We ate here this past Saturday. The brisket was closer to roast beef and once again, our experience here was lackluster at best. The prices have gone up so much that there is little to no value eating here. Very little meat for $34 a plate. read more

This is a new location so hopefully business will pick up. We stopped by here today after a long day of traveling and I'm so glad we did! I've had Southside Market in Bastrop before so I already knew I loved it so brought my husband and kids here for the first time, just for a quick to go order. I didn't get the order placed online until we were just pulling in so we decided to go in for a drink and to get out of the car and Chase was at the front and made sure our order got in right then! We expected to be there a bit and it ended up taking less than 10 minutes. As we were walking out, we stopped at the front counter to buy some items and Chase gave us several recommendations and he was honestly SO helpful and nice and in such a positive mood. You can tell he's got the personality that just uplifts everyone around him! I got a chopped beef and we got a round of mac and cheese and it was all amazing! I always highly recommend this place to everyone because I love their food but now I can say they also have great service. read more
