The turkey wings were fall-off-the-bone tender and covered in rich, flavorful gravy that was perfect over the rice. We arrived shortly before closing. Upon entering, the place is really small and the ambiance was filled with a smokey scent and can be a bit claustrophobic when filled to capacity. There is off street parking available on the lot behind the store. There were tables and benches in front of the store to sit and eat your food. NOTE: THIS IS A CASH ONLY BUSINESS. We were greeted by a pleasant man and placed our order behind clear plexiglass: a "super" (extra meat) pit beef, a pit turkey, and an order of fries. They also had pit ham, gravy and you could get the sandwich as a sub. We watched as they prepared the order through the plexiglass, cutting the meat on deli cutting machines and weighing each meat order. We asked if the fries were hot and were told they were "always" hot as we watched them take fries they were previously fried and "double fry" them for crispiness. They had a list of sauces available to add on the sandwich or on the side. We got the "tiger" sauce (horseradish and mayo) and bbq sauces on the side. Our order was ready in no time and the sandwiches: the pit beef sandwich was piled high with thin slices of well cooked although a bit dry (don't know if it was because it was the end of the day and we arrived close to closing), pit beef with a great smokey flavor. I added the bbq sauce (which was sweet and a bit vinegary, which I liked) on the meat and it added the perfect sweet balance to the savory smokiness of the meat. We wanted to try the tiger sauce (combo of mayo and horseradish) but were afraid as it seemed like this sauce was sitting out on the counter and with the mayo, we didn't want an upset stomach. The bun was fresh and I really enjoyed this sandwich. The pit turkey had thin slices (this meat seemed to be similar to the turkey you can get from the deli) on a fresh roll. The meat was not dry and this sandwich was good as well. The fries were best eaten as soon as we got them and they were hot, crispy, and fresh. All in all, we enjoyed our food and would come back again to grab a couple of sandwiches and try the gravy option.

This is a familiar place that updates the look and menu now and then, yet still feels like home. We often get a beet salad when it's available. Matthew's is scrumptious, with tender sweet juicy roasted beets, tasty grilled chicken, red onion slices and fresh spinach, tangy crumbled bleu cheese, and delightful candied walnuts, complimented by tart raspberry vinaigrette. By the way, it's gluten-free. We loved the rich cream of crab soup du jour, full of crab lumps and full of flavor, with a little spice from good old Old Bay. Delicious and dreamy. Their quesadillas were served a la carte as an appetizer, loaded with savory roasted chicken, heavy with a mild cheese and a lightly spicy flavorful thick red sauce, rolled in tender lightly seared flour tortillas. Generous and satisfying. Matthew's building dates from around 1862 as a station and hotel at the end of a horse-car line, before electricity! It's been through around 5 names over the years, and has been the Parsons family's Matthew's 1600 since 2004. We've felt comfortable and welcomed here for decades. It has plenty of free parking in their own lot. By the way, many of their already reasonable prices are discounted a little if you pay cash. That's a endearing way of keeping it real in Catonsville, only charging when it costs them.

I settled on a dish of salmon, cabbage, and sweet potatoes. I couldn't wait to pick it up. We did take-out. We drove down the road, picked up the food, and once I smelled it I was ready to eat! Everything was good! I tend to like my salmon a bit on the rare side, but it was still good. It also came with some rice and some cornbread. I wasn't going to eat the cornbread, but once I pinched off a piece, it was OVER! The cabbage was perfectly cooked and the sweet potatoes were divine. My FAV! My partner ordered fried catfish, green beans, fried chicken, potato salad, and a seafood salad. I tasted the green bean......... they were seasoned to perfection. She, naturally, had the cream of crab soup (see above). I had the deviled eggs topped with crab. The eggs were pretty good. But, I will say, they were not the best crab adorned deviled eggs I've had. They were quite enjoyable, none the less. And the Caesar salad was great: the right proportions of crisp romaine, tangy dressing and crunchy croutons. Our server was very pleasant and kept the drinks filled: we were quite satisfied. The ambiance is very sports bar which is not my bag, but the sound wasn't blaring so it didn't interfere with my dining experience so it was a total neutral. I would definitely eat here again.
