Southern spoon is still relatively new (opened roughly two months ago), so going to give some grace with the review. Pros: Wait staff was kind and attentive. Service took the appropriate amount of time. The wooden beams in the lofted ceiling were pretty. The menu had a variety of options we wanted to try. The sausage patties had good flavor. Cons: The food generally lacked flavor. For a southern style breakfast spot, it was pretty surprising the lack of seasoning used across all the dishes we tried. Potatoes, eggs, veggies, and toast were all just very bland. I'm sure they will figure things out and get better over time, but we will wait a while to head back.

We had a great experience here and can't wait to come back. My favorite was the breakfast burrito. It was packed full with crispy potatoes, scrambled eggs, chorizo, peppers, onions and cheese. It was served with creole breakfast sauce and salsa. My husband would've liked it served with sour cream which might have been a nice touch. The chicken and waffles was also really delicious but not quite what I expected. It came with 2 huge waffles which was a surprise. They were flavorful but not crispy. Again, totally fine just not what I was expecting. We ordered Nashville hot chicken and the breading was crisp but it was not spicy at all. The flavor was great, the chicken was juicy but as you can see in the photo it was quite small compared to the giant waffles. We also tried the Slap Yo Mama Skillet. We also really enjoyed this dish also. The potatoes were crispy (my fave) and they were seasoned really good. I personally thought the chorizo, Tasso ham and andouille sausage should've been bigger chunks. The potatoes are about the size of a quarter so I think it would've just been a better ratio. I also wish it would've had two eggs instead of one. It was a large portion of potatoes so again, it would've been a better ratio to have 2 eggs instead of 1. We chose sour dough which is homemade in GR and very good. We also ordered a latte which was piping hot and delicious. We were even given free coffee after our latte was gone. Our waitress was very friendly, had great recommendations for us and came back just enough to make sure we didn't go without something we might need or want. The restaurant was very clean and welcoming. When we walked in we were greeted by multiple employees which was pleasant. The prices and portions were perfect. I will absolutely be coming back soon!

Such a good place for breakfast. It is Southern style and tends to offer a little spicier cuisine than some. Please be sure and ask questions before you order. Today I tried the country fried steak. The sausage gravy was full of flavor and had some zing. The over easy egg was on point but the hash browns could have been aa little bit crisper. Over all the food was great and Amy W was wonderful. Thank you Southern Spoon!

The southern spoon just opened up about a month or so ago in Middleville and they have the best breakfast of anywhere in this area. This is my second time going because it was so good the first time and I can't wait till the next time. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is so great and the people are so friendly. The owners, Kyle and Kenna are almost always on site helping cook, dry and roll up silverware, visiting tables to talk to the customers and find out how their meal is. I would expect nothing less considering they own the sandbar next-door, which is also very delicious and well run. It is obvious they truly care about the restaurants and the happiness of the people that visit them. It is also important to know that their meat comes from Tom's meat market up the street and they have the best meat around. One of our waitresses Amber was so friendly and helpful. The first time we went, I tried the shrimp and grits, which is hard to find anywhere in this area and especially hard to find as good as these shrimp and grits are. The kids had pancakes and bacon and the pancakes were huge and the bacon was so thick and delicious. my mother ordered the eggs Benedict because that's her favorite. Go to breakfast food and she enjoyed it and said it was some of the best eggs Benedict she has ever had. We also ordered a half order of the biscuits and gravy because we both love biscuits and gravy and we try biscuits and gravy every place we go. My stepfather used to make the best biscuits and gravy and we are always searching for something even close to what he used to make, and this is probably the closest we've come. Homemade gravy with lots of sausage and just the right amount of spices make this the best. The next time we visited, I really wanted some more of those shrimp and grits, but I broke down and tried something different and got the low country which included two eggs, potatoes, toast, and skewers with sausage and shrimp on them and it was so delicious. We look forward to going back very soon and hopefully trying some other things on the menu.

Order of toast that came with my breakfast.

Got seated and were never welcomed we had to ask a server to please get us drinks. The same thing happened when we needed to order. It seemed no one knew we were in the section. Our table of three took us almost 1.45 to have lunch. Front of the house might not have had it together but the kitchen did! The food was great! We had fried green tomato app- fantastic sauce. One had shrimp and grits she loved her meal- grits were course ground. I had the veggie omelette and subbed Brussels sprouts for potatoes and they were amazing. I would highly recommend trying this combo! All in all food is good but the service was slow and not very efficient- honestly the service was bad enough to rate a three but I loved those dang Brussels sprouts with my omelette!

I wanted to try the pork chops but they were out, so I got the rib tips with gumbo greens and dressing for the sides. My dad got the same, and my mom got the fried catfish with yams and turnip greens for her sides. I thought the rib tips were good and I would order them again. The dressing was just "okay" and unfortunately I bit into a large chunk of fat from the turkey meat in the dressing so that didn't help. The real star was the gumbo greens. My dad was also not a fan of the dressing, but he said he would have gotten the gumbo greens for both his sides if he had known how good they were. My mom enjoyed her food as well as the strawberry crunch cake I suggested she get. I am not sure if I missed it my first visit, but when my order was being rung up I noticed a cash and non-cash price flash on the screen. I did not see any signage on the door about the extra fee for paying by card, and the cashier did not mention it. That is such a big pet peeve for me. Had I known in advance, I would have come prepared to pay with cash. I am sure I will return again, but restaurants really need to be transparent about these excess fees.

We did come on a Sunday for lunch so I'm sure their high demand time. Then when we got our order it was missing one of the sandwiches, so that took another 7 minutes to get. I also had to check on my order as I saw others getting theirs before ours. Bathrooms ran out of soap and paper towels. The process for getting your food was a bit confusing as there wasn't any order numbers so you couldn't tell how many other orders were in front of yours. I also ordered two coconut macaroons, which weren't too sweet and hit the spot. This place is extremely crowded and busy so make sure you plan at least 30 minutes ahead. Wait time is long and I wouldn't recommend if you're too hungry. It was definitely very very hot day so the place was pretty stuffy, but I don't blame the deli itself, but fair warning. It's quite busy as the chef is award winning when I looked up her name online.
