This is a beautifully designed boutique hotel with a very unique aesthetic and thoughtfully curated interiors. The location is excellent, with a great vibe, and the staff were consistently friendly and helpful. However, for a hotel at this price point, some basic amenities being available only upon request, such as slippers and in-room coffee/tea, felt a bit inconvenient. These small touches could easily be complimentary and would significantly elevate the overall experience without added hassle for guests. While the ambiance and service are strong, the stay didn't quite feel like it fully justified the premium price. I have stayed at the South Congress Hotel once a year, if not twice, since 2021 for both work/personal. I can't recommend this hotel enough. While nothing is absolutely perfect, anywhere, and I don't expect perfection like some entitled folk.... for us, this hotel has the BEST front desk and mgmt staff. Hands down! Our most recent stay the week leading up to Thanksgiving holiday, our room had a few minor issues, again, nothing super major. I kindly addressed it to the front desk staff to see what could be remedied. Before I needed to even explain further, they took it upon themselves to immediately move us into another room. We left that morning and went about our day. Upon our return, our luggage was already placed in the newly appointed room. And what a room it was! Exceptionally nice and so much bigger! Big thank you!! It's the little things that make such a difference. This is why this place stands out and I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. Huge Kudos to the following people: Louis, Avery, Esme and the valet guys are beyond awesome....also to anyone else we missed!! YOU GUYS are fantastic. We can't wait to see you again. What I liked: -Had availability so allowed me to check in very early which made my trip so relaxing. I just hoped for the best when I got there. -All the staff were very friendly and helpful. -Nice pool area, wasn't over crowded. Water was a little cold. -Rooms didn't have much style but I ended up liking it. - Beds were super comfortable. I slept like a log. I was super tired from walking all day. - Rooms could get pretty dark but light does shine in from the sides of the window. Fairly good for light sensitive sleepers. -Great location. Safe area, love south Congress. Fun vibe but not crazy. A lot of restaurants and shopping. You can walk to downtown, get a bike, or a short uber. Neutral: - I guess a lot of weddings are here because there was a wedding both nights I stayed and my room overlooked the wedding. Given that, you will be up until the wedding ends. They firmly end at 11pm which was very reasonable and most people are probably out until that time anyways. After 11pm, it wasn't noisy at all. So given that, I can't really complain. If you want to go to bed early and this won't work for you, then something to consider. -My AC unit was also pretty loud. I was exhausted though so slept through it. Rare for me but wanted to let my noise sensitive people know. read more

A conundrum. However, one we will not choose to experience again. We have a Love/Meh relationship with SCH. I believe, it's solidly part of the Meh that has overtaken SOCO. Do you really need 3 western themed, boot licking store fronts all next to each other? With SCH celebrating it's 10yr anniversary, I can only say one word regarding the accommodations. Uncomfortable chic. Overpriced, also comes to mind. This time we were in Suite 343, about a grand a night. Ironically, this was less than the SCH website when our travel agent booked this weekend for us with Expedia. However, she may be able to get better rates due to her profession. Challenges with our room, were numerous. A couch that was impossible to get comfortable on with leather pillows with attachments to the metal frame, torn and non functional. The other couch was cute and in a brick hutch, but heavily worn seat cushions meant it was a challenge getting out off of and not extremely comfy either. Not very functional. No light in the little hallway when entering, created a very dark space where one couldn't really see what you put in the dresser drawers, without the aid of the good ol phone flashlight. Or perhaps there was a light, but have no idea how you would turn it on. In order to enter the suite, the door stuck and you needed to put your shoulder into it to open. And a bit of a heave to open it to get out. In the morning when I went to shower, I turned the handle, the entire handle fell off and crashed to the floor. I did manage to replace it and get it to function, which resulted in a luke warm shower at full on "Hot" setting. Although the faux patinated brass, maybe cool, it's not really efficient in function. TV's were large and there were actually 2 of them, but again, understanding how they worked was puzzling, but we eventually figured it out which remote did what. There was a large, railway tie posing as a table of sorts where the phone lived, but you had to be on your knees to really use it to call down for room service or when we checked out. One tree trunk thingy served as a bedside table, but if you deployed it, from underneath the bedroom area TV, it served somewhat as a obstacle to get out of bed to use the bathroom area. The misses, turned a trash can upside down and put a book on it for a Macgyver inspired table. Somehow, we managed to book our Birthday Staycation weekend, when there were weddings both Friday and Saturday. The issue with that is both of the events had the wonderful bar lounge area booked for Cocktail hour and not accessible to other guests. The the lounge has been a favorite haunt for us over the past decade, that was a bummer and an item good to check on if you happen to want to book a stay here. So what worked in the room? Well the bed was comfortable, plush. The view from the bed out of the wrap around windows looking towards the city down Congress Ave, was pleasant and a reminder how much Austin has changed since my move in '77. Little balcony was functional, although we didn't hang on it. The chairs and table could use a wipe down frankly. We enjoy staycations. At this price point, this suite couldn't compare to the quality that the Proper or Hotel Zaza offers, for instance, within the same approx price range. What else worked? After dinner out, we were able to enjoy the lounge and as usual the barkeepers were wonderful and the place still has a very chill feel. We really enjoyed 7am'ish No Se Breakfast and room service lunch Burgers on Saturday. That space has wonderful light in the morning. The Valet, front desk and wait staff (Hi Emily) at No Se were great. They have good peeps working here, at least the ones' we encountered.. that has always seemed to have been the case. We will visit the bits we like when we find ourselves on SOCO, although we find ourselves less likely to visit SOCO these past few years and leave it to the tourists who flood the area on the weekend. I am writing this review as a guest that attended an event hosted by Kevin Murphy. I have always liked the interior of this hotel as I've enjoyed the bar when they host the First Thursday event. The reception and check in went smoothly and I cannot speak of the valet as I did not drive because I live in Austin. The room was amazing and nicely appointed with a super comfortable bed and great bed linens. The concierge was helpful because I might live here but rarely do things downtown, so I was given nice ideas for things to do. The bartender was amazing and funny. When he realized we were all there for the same event he introduced all of us to each other. The prices are a little high, but it is the atmosphere and scene we paid for. Great place! read more

This hotel is like living at a cheap hostel The pictures from the curb are pretty accurate. It's a hotel room with hard floors and built for parties where they can spray down their floors. The lobby has a Study Hall atmosphere. Junior College was a long time ago and I didn't appreciate the trauma via a flashback I wasn't anticipating Who's adorning the first floor? Students who are 29-35 who are 2-3 years short of a 4-year degree. Asburgers is a real mental affliction apparently- The pool is awkward. Zero vibes. In room TV via recirculating air with a high CO2 content was a more attractive option The staff varies from professional and polite to Police State. Power first weld is a dangerous energy. I felt like I was being judge for being heterosexual looking even though heteronormativity is not to be disdained Maybe security is flexing because of the homeless problem that parades at South Congress Hotel's front door and 2-front restaurants. Maybe I need to dress better when entering the hotel because security mistook me for a homeless person in T-shirt and sandals It's summertime hot and the ac works well. We have stayed at the South Congress Hotel a number of times. It has been steadily declining each time. My wife and I have been coming to the South Congress area for our anniversary, in July for years. We came on a whim years ago, had a great time, and have been coming back since then. We stay there wander around shopping and visiting the local restaurants and bars. We DID NOT get to stay there this time. I booked reservations for Friday and Saturday nights almost two months out. We showed up in the same Jeep Gladiator we have driven there for the last two trips. The same jeep gladiator that is unchanged since we had it parked in there garage, by the valet, the last two trips. This time, however, the Valet help up his high calibrated fist, slightly lower than the highest point of our Jeep, and pronounced that it would not fit in the garage. I responded that it had been parked in their garage the last two times that we had visited, with zero issues. He held up his [recently certified by the state department of weights and measures] fist and reiterated that it would not fit in the garage. I responded that we would not be staying if we could not park our vehicle on the property. He ran inside to the front desk. I walked in behind him, thinking that this is an easily worked out issue, after telling my wife not to take her things out of the car- just in case. When I got to the front desk, the "guest services manager" greeted me with thinly disguised animosity and asked if I was the guy with the truck that was too tall. I said yes, and told him that we have had the same vehicle parked in their garage numerous times and that it has never been an issue. He proceeded to tell me that he "would not overrule is valets". My thought was "OK, what is the point of you being a manager then?" while at the same time recognizing that this guy had zero inclination to even try to work things out. He was exceptionally happy to get rid of us- for whatever reason. He voiced the I'm sorry about this with the thinly veiled disdain of someone escaping gum from his shoe, as he informed me that he would not be contacting our booking service to cancel the reservation, but that I would have to do so. Looking at the guy wearing his mask (Summer of 2025) with a sweater on under his button up short sleeve shirt, I think it was actually a prejudice issue, but I will never know. I can think of no other reason for his hostility before I even spoke to him. I cannot stress enough that there was nothing confrontational with the valet. This all came from nowhere. It worked out for the best as I sit here on the porch of a cabin attached to a winery outside of Fredericksburg. I just booked a Spa day for my wife and I will have time to go for a run at Enchanted Rock while she is busy. Skip South Congress, and especially the South Congress Hotel and head fro wine country. We have spent our last anniversary weekend in Austin. Honest Speculation: We were tagged as undesireabe conservative types and they didn't want us in their Austin. read more

Just returned from our daughter's wedding at the hotel. All of the staff was incredible from the front desk to the valet guys as well as all the staff helping coordinating our wedding. Could not have been any better. Fantastic service. With that said, this hotel needs some help. The furniture in the main lobby is terrible. Looks like it came out of the 60's with cracks in the leather. We were in the suite adjacent to the pool. The lighting in our room was terrible and the leather handles to the barn doors were all broken. They need to spend some money on making this a nicer hotel. Again, an A+ for service and a D- for furniture, fixtures, etc. read more

I've stayed here twice in the last two years for corporate events my company booked. Each time I've had something stolen, the rooms are terribly uncomfortable, and the staff has all been trained in the art of bad attitude! Everything from valet to front desk service to room cleanliness and comfort was a 10/10 experience. Very beautiful hotel and amazing location in the heart of Austin. HOWEVER, be very aware that although I spent over $200 a night for the room, after leaving they had charged me nearly $200 due to very expensive overnight parking and "amenity fee" which is nearly $40 a day to use their amenities such as wifi, pool, etc? Can't believe we're paying extra on top of a $200+ nightly rate to use the hotel we already paid for. read more
