This is THE record store Salem, MA (and I've) been waiting for! This size of the store is small no…read moredoubt, but extremely organized. Bottom line, it's THE place to go if you want new, cutting edge and Indie music on vinyl (or CD and tape too!). This isn't a knock on the other local record store in Salem, which is like a local icon for music lovers. For one thing there's always room for two in a city like this, and each has their specialty. This store is much less about used "bargains" and doesn't have a vast collection of all the Classic rock albums of yesterday. But if you're looking for what's really happening now, and want to find the up-and-coming artists before they get overplayed on the radio, Residency Records is your place. They have a much better selection than the Newbury Comics record selection, BTW. While I was there for about an hour on a Sunday every customer that came left with a stack of new (or new to them used) records. In most cases they stopped shopping when they hit whatever budget limit they'd set for themselves. That's my definition of a great record store. The owner was extremely friendly, gave me good money for records I was looking to sell (all were mint and more on the rare side so keep that in mind). But more than that, he was friendly and very knowledgeable and seemed to know many customers by name. So, NOT like the guys in the movie High Fidelity and believe me over the years I've ruin into a number just like that! This store has a large collection of Metal as well (which the owner stated he loves); though it's not my thing, I'm sure that will be a big draw for the many fans of the genre that are out there.

The Starbucks we ordered 3 drinks, the did forget the simple syrup in two of them so it's more was definitely straight matcha which is fine, healthier without the sugar haha. It definitely took longer than other locations with no line. The cafe also offers more food the your normal Starbucks as well. Staff was alright, didn't seem the most friendly on our visit.

It's definitely a more dated store but seemingly had decent inventory of novels + great kid-friendly selection. They have a Starbucks inside, with only two workers but only one person working the front and also making the drinks. Expect a little bit of a wait because of this. We ordered three drinks: one caramel ribbon crunch Frappuccino & two iced matcha lattes w/ strawberry cold foam. Took about 10 min, so definitely longer than your typical stand alone Starbucks. Matcha lattes had no sweetener, though it normally comes w/ simple syrup but no problem, healthier this way anyways haha. My caramel frappe was very sweet + kept leaking out of the cup. Staff was okay, didn't find them to be that friendly. Overall, I can see this being a great spot to sit + read a book as it's pretty quiet in here & has drinks + food too. Just note if you're ordering food/drinks, just keep in mind it might take some time to be ready.

Newbury comics has the best cd prices and has all genres of music. For all the underground, or indie stuff that you can't find elsewhere, Newbury Comics is sure to have. The rumor about Nebury Comics is that it was created by two Ivy League students, that wanted to have a comic store and music, and hence here it is today. I also really like their selection of oversized posters. A must stop by place for the incoming college student. You are sure to find things to dec out your new pad. There are box sets, comic books, a few novels, postcards, gifts, candy, tee shirts... kind of a smaller version of the west coast Amoeba (spelling please). Love this establishment and I hope that new new revolution of music purchasing via itunes won't disturb this fantastic company.

With everything available online for purchase I base my reviews of record stores not on if they…read morehave absolutely every new release, but on their curation and interesting selection. I want to go in and find something I've never heard of or stumble upon something I didn't even know I needed. Big Fun excels in that and after a conversation with the owner I'll definitely be back and most likely just ask for a selection of "dealer's choice" records, as everything he played while I was browsing was something that piqued my interest.
