Since moving to Chicago I've been looking for a good comfort/soul food spot and I think I found it! I checked out Soulé on a Saturday evening and they did not disappoint. The staff was super friendly and they were BUSY (good for them!) I had the fried catfish plate with mac&cheese and greens. My friend had the white meat chicken plate with sweet potatoes and asparagus. We also shared the jerk wings and the banana pudding!! The catfish was DELISH! I haven't had catfish this good since moving from New Orleans. And the sweet potatoes were to die for! The price for the amount of food was just right compared to some other souls food spots I've been too! I forgot to get pics of some of the food before we started eating, but that just tells you how good it was! I suggest making a reservation if you want to eat in as the space is not very large, but they also do carry out orders if you want to go that route! The only reason I did not give a 5 is because you knew the food was prepped ahead of time because it was served within a few minutes of ordering. The ambiance and setting is absolutely beautiful. The customer service is good. The food is bland and at times overpriced. I got 3 nice sized fried green tomatoes which seemed like they needed to ripen a bit more and the breading needs to be seasoned. You can tell it was used right out the bag and left a lot to be desired. Even add a little flavor to the tomatoes too. The Cajun salmon bites were also bland. The texture, size, and this portion was good but the seasoning to the fish and breading was missing again. The honey cognac wings were wonderful! Everything was on point about them EXCEPT paying $20 for 5 party wingettes without a side of fries or anything else. If it was 3-4 whole wings with a small side, it would be perfect. I would consider visiting again but I would rather order a full meal for those prices versus appetizers for entree prices that needs a little help. Came here solely because my mother wanted peach cobbler. This place was nearby and luckily still open at 8:30pm on a Saturday . The staff here were super nice to let us order to go 15 minutes before they closed. Since we had a small order, they decided to serve us. Catfish fillets here are fried to a crisp, juicy inside, seasoned well, and great flavor. Its great that they fry them upon order, so it was extra fresh. The Peach cobbler was textbook definition of what I would expect. This isnt going to be anything fancy, but it hits the spot! Cling peaches with doughy cobbler with plenty of brown sugar and butter. They give you a reasonable amount of cobbler, instead of a colossal scoop, which I appreciate. Granted, I did not order that much, but from what I can tell, this is a great establishment that offers soul food within a fairly swanky neighborhood that's not hosted within a gas station or the other side of town. read more

I came in on a Thursday evening. I was not aware of the need for a reservation but I was able to be seated because a party did not show up. My server was nice and the food came out quick. My only complaint is that my sides were piping hot but my salmon & shrimp were room temp. I enjoy HOT food. I loved the yams. So good! I would return for sure. read more

I was quite surprised by this place. Its a little tough to get in, but that usually means its good, right? Well, this place is pretty awesome and a gem of a find in West Town. The reservations and table setup are a little odd. We went last night and about half of the place was full at one time. They have two "seatings" which is a little weird, but we were flexible. I will give them credit for putting my friends all at one table instead of the two reservations we originally got. That was super appreciated. We all got most of the things on the menu so it would be too complicated to explain everything, but generally speaking, everybody enjoyed their food. I started with the BBQ Shrimp. It was the highlight of the meal for me. Excellent taste and pretty big shrimp! I went with the honey drizzled chicken which was very good, but I was expecting a little more. I should have asked for more hot honey. It comes with two generous sides which made the $20 well worth it. I really liked the dirty rice! For dessert, I had the banana pudding as it was recommended to me. That too was excellent and for $5, was a good deal. With the food and service, I really liked this place. Maybe I set the bar too high, but I wasn't floored by the food. Still, it was excellent and if I am ever in this area, I will be sure to check this place out! I ordered the catfish filet meal through Uber eats. needless to say it was VERY disappointing! I selected macaroni and dirty rice as the sides..... The fish is very salty and soaked in oil which tastes like old re-used grease. the dirty rice is spicy with no real flavor and the rice is gummy and the macaroni and cheese.....no words can help to describe the over boiled noodles that are also gummy and the cheese sauce that tastes like warmed cheese whiz. My friends and I went on a Saturday (Party of four). We had reservations at 5:30. Two of us arrived on time and were seated right away. While waiting on friends we ordered appetizers (fried green tomatoes, Cajun salmon bites and garlic shrimp). The appetizers came out pretty fast. My other two friends had arrived right before they came out. All of the appetizers were good but the bread that was in the garlic shrimp was too hard to eat. We all ordered drinks. They were all too sweet for our liking. For dinner we had lamb chops, fried catfish and blackened catfish. The lamb chops were over cooked. My friends really enjoyed the catfish. The bus boy was great. We left him an additional tip. It took about a hour for the dinner to come out. My food came out about 15 minutes after everyone else. By the time I got it I didn't want it. Alright the place looks nice but it's really small. The staff is alright I think service may be different when you actually sit down and eat. We just walked in but you got to make a reservation to eat inside. Also when you order be sure to check if your food is ready they didn't text us so our food wasn't really hot. Alright the food. We got the Greens and they were just okay. We also got the jerk chicken wings the regular ones they also got bbq ones anyways these were good. Last we got the catfish and this was better than the wings had a lot of flavor. Went with a group of friends after an exam and had a great time! This small but very cozy and well decorated restaurant pops out some delicious classic soul food. You'll find your staples liked fried chicken or fish, blackened salmon, etc. along with a couple interesting things like lamp chops. The place seats mostly couples or groups of 4-6, so we had to wait a bit for enough space to free up for our 10-person group. It's BYO with a corkage fee, so I definitely recommend you bring some beer or wine to enjoy with your meal! Between all of us we got their fried chicken, fried fish, salmon, lamb chops, and also their fried green tomatoes and most of their sides. Service was fast and so polite, even with our larger than expected group, and food came out fresh and hot. All the fried items were fantastic, with what I think was a cornmeal-y crust that was just thin enough but super crispy and not oily at all. The blacked salmon was also juicy and well seasoned, although the rice could've been a bit more exciting. The collard greens, Mac n cheese, and green beans were all tasty and hit the spot. The only downside is I think the meat portions were a bit smaller than expected- maybe the size control helps keep all the fried chicken or fish equally juicy and crispy. Overall, great place for a small gathering or a date (we saw a bunch of tables of 2!) in a part of Chicago that could definitely use some more good soul food. read more

I've tried quite a few of the creole southern theme restaurants in Chicago, namely the newer ones opening within the past three years. Soule has the best meal I've tasted in a very long time. I ordered the catfish, greens and sweet potatoes. We had had the fried green tomatoes to start. The catfish was seasoned and cooked to Perfection! I've tried some other places recently, where the fish was fried hard and just greasy for $30. The fried green tomatoes did not miss, nor did the greens or sweets. That moist cornbread, I normally don't like cornbread, this one got me. I'll end with they have nice sized portions, I took half my meal home. I'll definitely be back! Ate here with the family today, and we loved it! We tried every side, half the entrees and every available desert. No fails, and most exceeded our expectations. It's hard to nail down our favorites. The Greens were loved by all, but so was the Mac and Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, Creamed Corn, Chicken Spaghetti, Green Beans and even the Asparagus. My favorite entree was the Lamb Chops, but the Catfish Po'Boy and Blackened Salmon Pasta were awesome. The Honey Glazed Fried Chicken was great too. Our group favorite desert was the home made banana pudding, followed by the Peach Cobbler and Chocolate Cake. We need to go back and try the last few things we missed or that they were out of. A modern and casual spot in west town for soul food -- bring your friends! A few friends from grad school and I were craving comfort food and now that soulè has reservations available online it was a no brainer. Each reservation lasts for two hours and we arrived at 2 PM. Just a note that there are only around four tables and no patio, so a reservation is highly recommended. We kicked off our stay with a few appetizers, including fried green tomatoes, creamy garlic shrimp (my favorite!), and jerk shrimp. We also each ordered an entree each -- I ordered the dark meat honey fried chicken meal with chicken spaghetti and sweet potatoes, which was a couple dollars more than the regular fried chicken meal. I personally wish there was more honey on the chicken -- it didn't make a noticeable difference to me, but the meal itself was very tasty and comforting. Soulè also offers BYOB, but doesn't serve any alcohol themselves -- the cork fee is $10. At the end, our bill was around $30 each. read more

Great tasting food here. I did like that I was able to get seated and food on the table in a good amount of time. Everything looks nice and the place smells good. Prices are reasonable. My only complaint was the customers at the bar were extremely loud and I mean extremely. Which I consider is rude regardless if you're celebrating whatever. I think the manager or someone should've told them to tone it down a little in consideration of others. read more

Heard alot about this restaurant and was excited to try it but expectations quickly took a turn. We'd been seated for about 15 min and wasn't greeted until someone had to be called from the back. Our waiter, name started with a j, seemed bothered by us being there. We ordered our main and appetizers together. Apps never came and my friends drink never showed until we got the check. I've ordered from here many times now and I continue to come back only because their food is good. I also continue to believe that if they would improve their service, they would get 5 stars, easy. One improvement they did make was upgrading to online ordering only and not accepting phone orders. They couldn't keep up with the phone calls, it was hard to get anyone to answer, and the online process is much better, although they still don't accurately estimate how long your order will take. (The window is ridiculous so it's hard to know when to arrive, and in living 45 minutes away, it's not easy.) However, the biggest problem I had today was that I ordered the creamy garlic shrimp appetizer for $10. Since they don't offer it as an entree, I added additional shrimp for $6 to make it a larger portion for my dinner. Our order was ready while we were en route, but after we pressed the "I'm Here" button on the app as instructed, no one came out as I expecting. I went in and got our order and made sure all 3 dishes that we ordered were in the bag. We got all the way home and I then realized that I did not receive the extra shrimp that I paid for. Fortunately I had also ordered the Fried green tomatoes, so I was full with both dishes. I called and got credit for my missing shrimp, but I was again disappointed. My daughter had the salmon and shrimp over mashed potatoes with spinach and she loved it. (Only 2 shrimp in that dish though...and it's a $22 dish!) Called and told the Soul'e team I would be 10-15 minutes late for my reservation, was assured that this would be fine. Made it to the restaurant and was snapped at by the much much older Lady at the seating stand. Was told I would have to wait for the staff to clean a table for me and my party of 6..... yes, I was snapped at multiple times for being late and then told my table wasn't ready. I went to Soule with some friends last week for brunch on Sunday. It's a small space with lots of character. When we walked in we loved the music and the welcoming decor. This spot is byob, but if you're looking for a sweet Non-alcohol drink try the Soule Punch (Cherry Koolaid, Lemonade, and Sweet Tea). We loved the appetizers! I highly recommend the Jerk shrimp and the Fried Green Tomatoes. For my entree I got the shrimp & grits and I also went with a couple sides (greens and Mac & cheese). OMG the greens were so good! I don't get to eat greens often and I could of had a few sides of that they were so good. I was stuffed so I took some peach cobbler to go. I definitely plan on going back. I'm not one to leave bad reviews but this establishment deserves it. I ordered food from here before, I ordered the fried catfish with greens and sweet potatoes and the food was good, but not extraordinary. I ordered the same thing tonight to see how consistent the food would be. I placed a pickup order around 7pm and my pickup time was at 7:45/8ish. I show up before that time because I was hungry and wanted the food fresh. I was told a 15-20 wait. No problem, I understand. I come back around 8:20, I was told there was still a wait because they were busy. At this point I'm a little annoyed but understand because it happens sometimes. So I stay in my car and periodically come check on the status. What I can't forgive is at around 8:50, I come back in and I'm told there's no more catfish because it was served to the guest in the restaurant. Now I'm frustrated because I placed the order almost 2 hours prior, was supposed to pick up the order 1 hour after that, but it wasn't until 5 minutes before they close I'm told they're out of catfish. The nail in the coffin was when I was trying to find alternative meals, (again, was hungry and was expecting my food an hour ago) I was told they were "out of food." I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I HATE when a restaurant doesn't appreciate my patronage. At some point I could've been informed they couldn't complete my order, but instead I was told to wait. Judging by the other reviews, service is something that really needs to be addressed here. From the fried green tomatoes, to the chicken, lamb ,Catfish and grits, sweet potatoes, green beans to the banana pudding it was absolutely superb. I will say I prefer my mac and cheese a bit cheesier but it was still good. Our server was personable and gave us great recommendations. Even the lemonade and sweet tea are delicious. The food was excellent. The fried salmon and jerk pasta w/shrimp was outstanding. But for our party of nine, who also liked the menu and cocktail offerings, we were left uncomfortable for the majority of our meal because of the lack of window coverings at the wall of windows on the west side of the dining area, which are almost floor to ceiling. And on a day where outside temps were over 90 degrees, it was hard to totally enjoy such a unique dining experience because the sun made it so incredibly warm. Many of us planned to try the desserts but chose not to order because it was so uncomfortable. Plantation blinds, remote controlled shades, sliding shoji screens or even tinted window film would have made the experience more comfortable for the diners. Until the window treatment issue is addressed, would be best that diners avoid seating directly across from the windows after 4pm when the sun starts setting and making it feel a lot like a sauna up in there. read more

Would you have given 5 stars overall if not for the excessive wait and lackluster customer service. Food however, I'd give 5 stars all day, however two stars taken for service. First, the wait time was quoted at 45 minutes which was acceptable. However, we ended up waiting about an hour and 15 minutes which was unacceptable. Then, they sat a party that came and checked in on the list after we did a few minutes before us. Our server Tyannah, a young girl was ok. The restaurant itself is small with about 9 or 10 tables. This was our first time visiting Chicago and found this place on Yelp. I'd definitely recommend going as the food is good. Prices reasonable. Just maybe go on a weekday when not so busy. read more
