I've used Soughtout Service for several tasks over the past seven years, and always been delighted with both the quality and cost of their work. Today's task was small, but David still arrived on time, did it well, and the result is better than if I'd tried to do it myself, even though I'm somewhat of a handyman. Once I started using Soughtout, they also became a service used by my son's family, and then also by neighbors. Has been out of commission for some time. -- was asked to put together a 19$ tension rod shower caddy (easy to do but I wanted to give him tasks to meet hour minimum). Spent a long time, built it wrong, it wasn't fitting, he said "I can saw it off to make it fit." No thank you. -- piece of wood had cracked. needed to be replaced. Thin transparent glue haze remained under prior wood. "This should be removed, I'll remove it with my saw." The glue haze is still there, with random sawed off chunks of wood throughout. A few of multiple challenges. The handyman help was not helpful, rather created extra work for us and more things to fix. Plus cost a lot. Hard for us as we have no free time, so the lost, sacrificed time also hurt. It's great if he'd like to get back in the flow, he's a very nice person! but should charge half the rate and be transparent that he's getting back in the flow, so folks aren't surprised if there are gaps in care. David helped me replace an under mount kitchen sink without breaking the counter. It is not an easy job for most handymen/contractors, they all say you have to replace the whole counter top, or charge me for two days of work- more than $1000?!. David was referred to me by a friend and told me he has done quite a few like that. So he came and replaced the sink from under in a few hours, it was a hard job but he did it very carefully charging me a reasonable price. I saved a lot of money if I had to replace the whole kitchen counter top. He even helped me replaced the water damaged cabinet wood. My mom, who is elderly, is not very savvy with handyman, particularly with folks like David, who in my opinion takes advantage of the lack of oversight and accountability. He was asked to look at back blinds and upstairs fixtures that were not functioning due to lack of electricity. He came spend 4 hours, pocked and prodded and diagnosed, from his invoice and phone conversation, " that there was no electricity to the unit." This was a self evident truth, which was why he was called; with almost akin to asking a firefighter what is going on and him responding well "it seems your house is on fire." He ended up "identifying" other problems and billed for diagnostic and "loose wires" that were not causing problems nor resulted in the underlying fix. After David left charged my mother $360 and not resolving the issue for which he was called. I came and turned on her light switch in the master bedroom which solved the problem. Picture attached. You do not have to be a master electrician to recognize that is first thing to look for. On a similar occasion David was asked to come fix outdoor garage keypad, he again poked and prodded, identified was unable to fix the problem and billed for time. On 1/22 he indicated he know knew how to fix the garage and again poked and prodded charged for time but did not fix the issues. He incorrectly, from his invoice, stated "I think the receiver in the Liftmaster is not working." Great diagnostics, which was not the problem as all other remotes still activate the garage. In my opinion, it was clear that David did not know what he was doing and it was not his area of expertise. Instead of just admitting such and not billing for "time" diognosing self evident truths like "there is no electricity to the unit," he billed for time without fixing the underlying issues and identified other problems that were not having an impact on the house. He is akin to a cab driver who will take you on a roundabout route to charge you more, the only difference is that the cab driver eventually get you to your destination. So this is to save elderly folks from getting ripped off. Anyone with managerial experience would have called out David for wasting time and kicked him out. If you are going to hire David, pay him not for time but project completion. If it involved diagnostics, best to get someone else. For basic tasks like nailing something in or fixing cabnits, etc, David could be a hire, but given his above track record and fees, there are a lot of other options out there. This is my opinion on the matter and I hope it helps people out. read more
