We had been hearing great things about Sorn for some time and wanted to check it out, so along with another couple we stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. We arrived around 12:30 and there were a couple tables occupied, but it was by no means busy. After we were seated, our server came and dropped off menus and filled our water glasses right away. After our drinks and food orders were taken everything went downhill from there. My wife only wanted a bowl of Tom Ka Gai (chicken coconut soup) and a side of rice, I ordered sticky rice and Larb, our friends ordered Pad Kee Mao and Pad Woonsen. My wife's soup came out after a bit and after another 10 minutes with no more food delivered, we had to ask where her rice was. They brought that out and then another 7-10 minutes passed before my Larb and sticky rice showed up and the Pad Woonsen for one of the other folks with us. My other friend then had to wait another 15 full minutes before his Pad Kee Mao showed up. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen, but the place was not busy. So far, service = poor, as not once during all the wait time did anyone come by to see how things were. Okay, now for the food quality and value... the Larb was ok, but not even close to authentic Larb. No mint, no lime flavor, red onion instead of shallots, and no umami taste. It was dressed with tomatoes (in all my years spent in Thailand I had never seen Larb served with tomatoes), although I asked for Thai hot, it was medium at best (I had to ask for some fish sauce and chilis to add more spice), and it was served with spring greens instead of the requisite cabbage or iceberg lettuce chunks. The sticky rice was a small ball served in a cute container, but had the texture of a rubber ball, obviously done in the microwave and not fresh steamed. The last bit was inedible as it was too hard and rubbery to chew. My wife's soup was tasty, full of chicken chunks, mushrooms, and slices of galangal and lemon grass. It was too much on the sweet side however, which leads me to believe it must have been made with added sugar. The Pad Woonsen was fairly tasty and full of veggies and glass noodles and our friend enjoyed it. The Pad Kee Mao looked more like a large plate of noodles with some small chunks of chicken and a ton of green beans (not long beans) and red and green bell pepper. Not a very good replication of the traditional late night street food dish of Kee Mao served in Thailand and most other Thai restaurants I've been to. Green beans are rarely if ever used in this dish, and when they are used they are long beans, not regular green beans. Overall, I was very disappointed by the experience. The prices are high (think $17 for a plate of Pad Thai that other places charge at the most $14 for), the quality sub par, and the service atrocious. Soren reminds me of a Thai restaurant that is trying to elevate itself to something it is not. I don't recommend it and we won't be back. I much prefer to drive to Round Rock and eat much more authentic (and lower cost) food at Chok Dee. Atmosphere - 8/10 Service - 3/10 Food - 6/10 Value - 3/10 read more

I've only eaten here once, but I definitely intend to be back! My husband and I went for a date recently on a Saturday night. We were told the wait would be 40-50 minutes, but after an hour we still hadn't gotten a text. So we walked back and when we got there they were getting ready to seat us. The food was definitely worth the wait. As an appetizer we got Sorn's egg rolls, which were delicious. For our entrees my husband got the red curry with brisket, and it was incredibly good. The brisket just fell apart, and the curry itself was so flavorful. I too ordered a unique dish - the red curry with duck, lychee, pineapple, and grapes. My duck was not tender the way duck usually is so I think it was a bit overcooked. The curry, though, was very good. It was quite pineapple forward, and the addition of lychee was a very interesting touch. I did end up taking out the grapes because that was a bit weird even for me. Overall both entrees were large, tasted amazing, and served piping hot, which is important to me. I've seen mixed reviews of the service, but ours was great. The only room for improvement I would suggest for the owners are the ambience. Apparently there's a live jazz duo every Saturday night. While they were quite talented, it was very loud and did not fit the vibe of the restaurant, which is dark and moody inside. Something more subdued would've been much better and would allow patrons to hear each other. The other thing that don't fit the vibe at all were two absolutely giant tv sets behind the bar. The restaurant is set up to where someone is always facing the tv, and it was very distracting. Not to mention it was playing Fox News, which in itself should bring this review down another star, but I'm in a forgiving mood today. Too Loud! We two couples were celebrating a wedding anniversary tonight at Sorn Thai Kitchen in Georgetown. Shortly after we were seated the live guitarist started to play. All chance of normal-volume table conversation was immediately lost. We had to raise our voices considerably to be heard across the table, taking all the air out of what had started out as a lovely evening. The music was just too loud. So check in advance whether there will be live music. If yes, abandon all hope of enjoyable table conversation; bring your loud-teacher voice instead. On top of the overly loud music, our food was very late getting to us. They must be short-handed in the kitchen. I'll not be coming back. read more

Happened to be in Georetown on Christmas Eve and saw this place just newly opened. So delighted to share that it is super tasty, and in the middle of Georgetown downtown. We had the tom yum soup, green and Massaman curry and mango sticky rice. I couldnt remember the last time I had Thai food that I really like in Austin so this was a great find. My husband loves Massaman curry and his last place that was as good was Sap's in S Austin. Their tom yum was piping hot, tangy and have a nice kick of heat. The mango sticky rice portion was huge - they gave us so much sticky rice I was rolling out of the restaurant. Their menu looks super interesting, not too long but just enough imo. Georgetown desperately needed good Thai food, and Sorn Thai fills that gap! I'd say this is currently the best Thai option in town. While they don't include some last-mile ingredients that would make it A+ traditional, it's solid, well-executed, and does a good job bridging the Georgetown market to real Asian food. Highly recommend the papaya salad, Sorn rolls (they're definitely not just egg rolls), curries, pad krapow, and the sweet and tangy shrimp. Everything we tried was well-balanced and satisfying. The restaurant comes from the same owners as Seeda and Khon Thai in Austin, with several recipes inspired by the co-owner's mother, which shows in the depth of flavor. Great spot before walking Georgetown Square, grabbing drinks, or taking visiting friends. We went on a weekday when it's not so busy. read more

Most delicious Pad Thai we have eaten outside of Thailand, and we have tried Pad Thai 'in several locations in the U.S. and Europe. Food was perfectly seasoned to our liking (mild and medium spiced), and was delivered hot. How were they able to accomplish what so few restaurants are able to achieve? The food was placed on very warm plates after being prepared and delivered immediately to the individual diner. This is one of few restaurants in the U.S, that serves individuals as soon as their order has been cooked, rather than waiting until all of the dishes for the table have been cooked. Great job, Sorn Thai! I thought I was back in Europe! Food quality and quantity were excellent, enough for dinner at home on the following day. Service was exceptional. Came here on a Saturday night around 5:30 and it was starting to get busy. The place has a nice warm and cozy vibe, but it's not that big so would recommend making a reservation. It's in downtown Georgetown and there is no dedicated parking lot so make sure to account for that. Since they are newer, service was a little slow in terms of taking our order, asking for boxes, bill etc. but everyone was very friendly! Now the food. Papaya salad was 10/10. So fresh and has a nice little kick. A good portion size too as we shared it amongst 3 people. Basil Thai fried rice was also solid and had so much flavor. We got pork as the meat. The panang beef was also delicious. Meat is so tender and curry is perfectly balanced and served with rice on the side. Pad kee maow was good, but not our favorite and could have done without it. Since the restaurant is smaller, it can get a little noisy but overall had a great time and excited to go back and try more of the menu. I went in the Sorn Thai Kitchen for lunch with my husband and child. The restaurants ambiance looks like it would be really pretty at night. The service was friendly. I ordered a few appetizers. The brussels sprouts were wonderful. Awesome flavor cooked really well. The golden bags reminded me of a small Samosa. The sauce that came with it was awesome. The fresh spring rolls had lots of veggies, which is what I love. They forgot to add the vermicelli noodles to them, but that is on the menu. A spin on the cheese rolls was nice. They came out really hot and the dipping sauce is like honey. The pad Thai was our favorite thing that we ordered. We actually ordered it for our child, because they don't have a kids menu. It had an amazing flavor. I would totally order that again. This restaurant would also be great for take away/delivery. read more

I've been here three times so far and have tried something different on each visit. My favorites on the menu are the Thai tea and the tom kha soup, both of which are consistently excellent. I've also ordered the green curry, Massaman curry, duck curry, pad Thai, pad see ew, egg rolls, and mango sticky rice, and overall the food quality has been solid with good variety across the menu. That said, the restaurant is still clearly new and working through some service kinks. Service could be more polished, and it would be a big improvement to automatically serve chili, chili oil, or Sriracha with meals instead of having to ask. I also wish chopsticks were provided by default rather than being given a fork every time. A few atmosphere notes: the jazz music doesn't quite fit the space, and the chairs are not very comfortable for longer meals. Overall, there's strong potential here with the food, but service consistency and a few operational and ambiance tweaks would make the experience much better. read more

They were open but probably should be closed to reset for dinner. Front of the house is still not smooth. Came here for my birthday last night and WOW, sooo happy I did. This place is special. The food was delicious. We have had good and bad Thai food, but here, everything was perfect! Chatted with the chef/owners husband and we can tell, he is so proud of his wife. As he should be, her food was amazing! The ambiance was so cozy, moody, yet happy as there there so many people there that were enjoying each other and their food. The staff were clearly working hard while keeping a smile on their faces. Sonny was our waiter and we simply adored him! What a great asset to the team! He's very personable and takes so much pride in the restaurant. Not to mention, his own mother is behind the recipe for their amazing mango sticky rice! Perfection! We've seen for a while now that a new Thai restaurant is coming to the Georgetown square. A few days ago we happened to be at the square and walked by and saw a sticky pad in the window that said they were having a "soft opening" so we walked on in. It took a little while to get seated and served, but I put that down to them still working out some staffing kinks during their soft opening. I ordered chicken Pad Thai (my standard test dish whenever trying out a new Thai restaurant) and my wife got shrimp Pad See Ew. We also shared a dish made of brussels sprouts. All of the food was exceptional. My wife's Pad See Ew was loaded with shrimp--very generious. We're Thai food snobs, having lived in Seattle for many years where there are some fantastic Thai restaurants. The other Thai restaurant in Georgetown is "ok" and now only does take out, so we've been hoping for a really good sit-down Thai restaurant. I have been to Sorn 3 times now, and each time I am blown away by how good the food is. The yellow curry is phenomenal, and the spring rolls are perfect. I don't know a lot about Thai, but it seems like the food is a step-up from other places that I've tried. The sauces are off-the-charts good.
