I haven't eaten at Sooey's in well over 20 years. Not really sure why I stopped going, but last week decided to stop by and was not disappointed. I could be wrong, but I don't remember their ribs being this good. I mean really good. The sauce is sweet, but not too sweet and the meat literally falls right off the bone. This was early in the season, as I think the server said they had been open a week. I'm always suspect of BBQ reviews. Everyone is a bit different, but I think 3 stars is spot on. The service is great, quick, clean bright place, fast. I was in the mood for ribs, and had the plate (half rib, 2 sides) with collards and baked beans. The good: -Probably the best hushpuppies I've had around here. Crazy good flavor and crips + fluffy. -Collards had a deep rich flavor, just a tad too salty but were good. The Mid: -The baked beans did have a nice smokey taste, but there was something about them that was too much tomato....almost like a ketchup funky flavor. The bad: So, the ribs flavor was really good. But they were so tough I couldn't pull them apart and even the plastic cutlery wouldn't do it. I gave up and sent them back and politly asked for a cup of pulled pork. Server was great--no problem at all with my request. The challenge, the cup of pulled pork while also flavorful, had huge pieces of fat that just wasn't rendered down. All in all --- 3 stars read more

We called in for an order at 5:30 PM. They gave me a pickup time at 6:30. Great....or so we thought. We came to pick up our food....Not ready. We watched them kick numerous people out of the dining area and anyone that came in after us was refused service and told no more orders could be placed tonight. The restaurant said it was open until 8:00 PM and they stopped taking orders at 6:30. We were told the AC broke down and only 2 of 4 chefs showed up, which I understand is not their fault.....but don't tell me an hour for food pickup and then be nowhere ready when I arrive. I didn't walk out of the restaurant with my take out order until after 7:30 PM....two hours after I ordered and one hour after the quoted pickup time. I realize, as their website says, "good food takes time", but my time is also valuable as a paying customer. Their food is delicious but I'm not sure I'll be back. This is the second time I've been here and this was a repeat experience from the first time in regard to the wait. I just don't need Carolina BBQ that badly. read more

I discovered Sooey's BBQ when looking for a place for lunch. It was busy when I arrived with a large party and some other tables filled as well. I was warmly greeted when I arrived and my order was taken before the large party. I was a little hesitant to order the Eastern style pulled pork as I hate the vinegar based sauce. I'm just not a fan of vinegar. I grew up on the sweet sauce. I was told there'd be just a little vinegar on it and I could put the sweet sauce on top. I needed a lot of sweet sauce to try and cover up the vinegar taste. I don't fault the restaurant at all for me not liking the vinegar based pulled pork as the menu was clear and so was my waitress. But I wouldn't order the pulled pork again. And unlike another restaurant did not serve me a chunk of bone. I did enjoy the sides of baked beans and mac n cheese. I'd eat here again just make another menu choice. read more

We ordered the Sooey's BBQ Platter w. fires & baked beans & a Brisket Platter w.slaw & fried okra Pros & Cons: Pros: the meat was quite good- the ribs had a nice char, the meat fell off the bone, & was super tender. The pulled pork had a great flavor, I didn't even use any sauces. The brisket was meaty without a lot of excess fat. The chicken was crispy & juicy, not a lot of grease. The sides were average, nothing overly delicious-probably from a can or bag compared to homemade (especially the crinkle cut fries) The hush puppies were amazing! Not too dry, not too moist, with a nice crunch, and fluffy inside. Cons: Compared to other BBQ joints in the area they are a bit pricier, and while the food was yummy-it wasn't stand out delicious and the sides were generic. Also, there was something 'up' with out waitress, maybe she was sick, maybe she was high, maybe she was just having a shitty day- but she took a very long time to provide service and seemed super spaced out. She actually got our sides wrong and another guy there helped provide the correct ones. So overall, with meh service, meh sides, and being over priced-I'd opt for another bbq joint in the area. read more

Where do I begin? After the call to order food, my husband couldn't stop talking about how nice the lady who took his order was. We arrived in 20, and she walked our huge order right out, explaining that our packages were strategically stacked like a game of Jenga. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. Had a chance to dine here a week ago, unfortunately I'll have to recommend against it. Came with a group, and ran over to the grocery store before and joined my friends a little late, they had ordered. Waitress never acknowledged me, and didn't ask if I wanted to order anything. I ended up just sharing my friends food. Food was not that great. Not a lot of good smoke flavor on the meat. The fried chicken was decent. A friend ordered a fried fish sandwich which was supposed to come on some type of cornbread bun, but didn't. She was disappointed, I told her I would cook her one for her bday. Fair prices for yesterday's food. It was my mistake going for BBQ in Corolla when I should have stuck with seafood and deli's. Gonna be honest here, the food is absolutely average, probably solid BBQ for the Northeast where I'm from but for Carolina, not great. The crinkle fries, not good at all. BUT The guy that helped us (I think it was Nick?) was a great dude. Super helpful, very down to earth. Kitchen mixed a couple things up and he fixed them up fast. I definitely don't recommend this place, we've had far better food elsewhere during our vacation. When we walked in, there was a guy eating a plate of food behind the counter and he greeted us with his mouth full. It was very odd and off putting. After we were seated (in a mostly empty restaurant), we ordered the pork bbq sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and the fried chicken with fries. The bbq was average and the mashed potatoes were cold, I couldn't even eat them. The fried chicken was decent, but the fries were disgusting. Cold, unsalted, and stale. We ordered takeout for pickup and managed to get it just in time before they ran out for the day. We had lots of pulled pork, ribs, brisket, hush puppies, cornbread, and beans. Everyone in the family seemed to be blown away by the meal. I thought it was absolutely delicious. The pork and ribs were both extremely tender and flavorful. Brisket was served in a sauce and wasn't as tender as some but had a delicious taste as well. I was also blown away by the hush puppies personally. I wish we had gotten a few more orders because they were so flavorful and crispy. Pulled pork was great in sandwiches for the next day as well, as it held up perfectly. We were looking for good bbq so we stopped here for lunch. The restaurant had a western vibe to it, Bonanza was on the tv. We were greeted as soon as we walked in by our waitress who told us where to sit. She was very friendly and provided good customer service. I ordered the bbq pulled chicken platter with Hushpuppies, Mac & Cheese, and potato salad. The Hushpuppies were my favorite! They tasted soooo good and were cooked just right. The Mac & Cheese was very good as well. I also enjoyed the potato salad. The bbq pulled chicken wasn't very good though. I actually thought there was carrots mixed in with it as I couldn't identify the meat. I asked for all white meat but they weren't able to do that. My boyfriend ordered the pulled pork with southern fried chicken. He opted for the Hushpuppies, Mac & Cheese and French fries. He really liked the sides, but the meats not so much. After ordering dinner online through their website at 6:30, I received an email alerting me that my order has not been confirmed and that I should call to check on it. I called and was told they had the order, but needed an extra 10-15 minutes. I arrived just before the estimated time and was told they needed another 10 minutes. 45 minutes later there was still no food and the same answer about the order being almost ready. It seemed that the order was "lost" in the kitchen and from the time the online order was placed to it being ready was almost 2 hours.. Very poor communication and total let down on service. The brisket was reheated and the old sauce burned onto the meat on a flattop, the meat was dry and not edible, it was more like Beef Jerky. The crinkle cut fries were undercooked and unsalted. My meal was nearly $20. When I went back to find a trash can, I told the staff the food was disgusting. They didn't say a word, I walked out. The staff was unprofessional and more concerned with cleaning the floors than earning my business. The worse part is the restaurant neither smelled like food or cleaning products. This is my go to when I'm on vacation in the outer banks. I love their brisket platter with cole slaw and mashed potatoes with gravy. I usually hit this location when we stay in Corolla. They have a location in Kill Devil as well. Both locations always hit the spot for my brisket addiction. I've eaten BBQ in every region of the country and this brisket is a very solid effort. Friendly help at take away counter. We ordered a pulled pork bbq sandwich, fried shrimp and a basket of hush puppies. The pulled pork was utter perfection - love a good NC vinegar sauce just like I grew up on! So good! The hush puppies were also outstanding! The fried shrimp would've been good but we were so disappointed in that it was served with marinara sauce? Is that what it was, or was it ketchup? We were so looking forward to fried shrimp and hush puppies dipped in COCKTAIL sauce (which is truly the best way to eat hush puppies) and ended up with something else that was very strange. Maybe they ran out of cocktail sauce? Sides: Mac & cheese was, at best, generic kraft easy mac. Hush puppies were tasteless. Onion rings tasted as if they were soaked in oil. As for the cole slaw, it was difficult to say if we had an expired batch or if that was how it was unfortunately prepared. I get it.
