Not much to talk about positively at Currituck BBQ as most things are either bland or just bad. The pulled brisket is just a wet sloppy mess that has at least some flavor from some spices but no real smokiness or some fattiness. The same goes for the pulled pork but even less flavor with even less spices being used. To complement the bland meats you do have a variety of BBQ sauces to choose from. The original is absurdly sweet and the South Carolina style has some mustard flavor but the vinegar and sweetness just overpower. The best was the North Carolina style sauce with some spices added in there but the overt vinegar taste can overpower. The chicken is just a rotisserie chicken, no BBQ going on there and is just a waste of a dish. The ribs had some nice pull on them and had a good amount of meat on them but the original BBQ sauce is just so sweet you can't taste anything else. The sides might have been the best things there, and they were still average at best. The mac and cheese was deeply cheesy and flavorful, but the macaroni is overcooked. The sweet potato casserole was very sweet and full of nutmeg offering a nice dessert side. The fries and fried okra were both very average with little flavor or seasoning. The coleslaw was a bit too sweet for me but it wasn't overpowering like most of the dishes. The potato salad is too sweet and had no other flavors. One of the most offensive things is the buns. The buns are some of the worst you can get, making the meal even worse. They almost taste like nothing. Overall horrible food and some of the worst BBQ I've ever had. read more

For the food, I had huge hopes because my husband told me this place has the best BBQ in the area. He got the brisket "burnt ends sandwich", Mac and cheese and beans. His was good. The meat was tender, beans were a good combo. The Mac and cheese was a 6/10. I ordered pulled pork sandwich and I'm pretty sure I got the pork bbq thats sold in those big white tub. The bun (which was different than the bun on my husband's sandwich) was awful. I had to toss it to the birds. The pork was fine, but again, wasn't the high quality I expected after his huge praise. Honestly after 3 bites, I didn't finish. Since his was good and mine was a bust I'm meeting it in the middle. Really authentic North Carolina bbq. Chopped pork sandwiches & really good hush puppies. We agreed the Mac and cheese had really nice consistency but needed some seasoning. The sauces are really stand out and we also had some chicken chunks that I would suggest skipping. The sweet potato casserole was really sweet and a treat for sure. Location is between Chesapeake and the OBX so a little bit of a drive if you're in Hampton Roads, Elizabeth City location may be closer. To be fair we only had the chopped brisket and chopped pork for sandwiches. I wish it was more smoked but still very good. The location had really pretty outdoor seating so I'd still recommend the location if you're up for a quick bite. We didn't try any of the other sides so I can't say how they are but the hush puppies were absolutely amazing!!! For the price it was a good option for something to grab on the way home from the OBX. read more

The food was pretty good. Only one worker that we could see; the guy at the register. He wanted to know if you wanted to give him a tip and then they charge you a fee to use your credit card. Absolutely delicious BBQ! We drove from Chesapeake at the recommendation of new friends and we were not disappointed. We tried burnt ends, pulled pork, pulled brisket, French fries, sweet potato casserole, Mac and cheese, baked beans, hot dog, hush puppies, and potato salad. For starters, when I walked in I said "Hello, how are you today", to a lady refilling the bottles of sauce , who looked right at me as i said hello & she said nothing. Ok then...... we were 6 feet apart and I know she heard me. Then the young generation of kitchen help and cashier , were carrying on back and forth with their own conversation and not concerned at all with me standing there. We've been to the OBX area several times and obviously have driven by Currituck a bunch, but for one reason or another never stopped. Enter a Christmas week visit and the fact that on most weekdays there are basically no BBQ joints/restaurants/shacks open in the Nags Head/KDH/Manteo area at all or for dinner, so we said, what the hell, and made the 50 minute drive to Currituck. There were five us so many combinations of meats, platters and sides were ordered but of course, I'm only going to focus on what I got because hey, it's my review. BBQ Chicken Sandwich - Mac & Cheese - Beans The pulled BBQ chicken sandwich was very good (all sandwiches come in two sizes with regular and jumbo) by itself but when the Larry's Original Sauce was added (sorry but I'm a Yank and don't care for vinegar or mustard-based sauces) it went to a level of great. Very moist with a lot of flavor. The beans are also noteworthy delicioso. Great choice to have the Larry's Original as the base for the sauce along with some sugar for a sweetening agent. The one turd would be the Mac & Cheese. Honestly, not much cheese flavor and it had almost a gloppy/gluey consistency. Four of the five people got it for a side, and all said it was a regrettable choice. Definitely no tourists in their past us and several of the locals knew each other and were talking like they come here fairly frequently which I after coming here I get. Good service, food was rendered quick, and the prices are reasonable. Past the slip up with the M&C this is a no brainer during future OBX trips and was well worth the near two hour round trip from South Nags Head. read more

I've been here twice now and I just love the place itself. Nice & simple menu, great atmosphere, love the outside and inside. But the food overall has been leaning average both times - with the exception of the hushpuppies, those are really amazing. I also liked their green beans and coleslaw. I asked for the slaw on top of my burnt ends sandwich this second visit and they said they only do that with pork sandwiches. I thought it was odd, since I would've paid to have the slaw on my sandwich. Kind of a strange rule. So, I got burnt ends on a bun. I didn't use bbq sauce so it was pretty bland without the slaw & I didn't finish it. I wish I got the slaw as a side instead of the Mac n cheese. Anyway - overall, I still like this place. I just wish the sides were a little better. I also thought the applesauce was made in house, but it's musselmans & full of sugar so I didn't give it to my baby. If you come, get the cheerwine soda. The potato salad, baked beans and Mac-n-cheese were all delicious, but the ribs, not so much. They tasted boiled and not good at all. My friend also got the macaroni & fries which were decent. But overall we agreed we liked Pierces bbq in Williamsburg better but they have very similar vibes & this is still a solid option! I ended up just ordering the bbq chicken sandwich was reasonably priced but was unpleasantly supposed to find out they charge ¢.50 for a water cup, obviously not the end of the world but we were only there for such a short period I would've just waited to drink my water in the car if I knew. Another thing is they do charge extra for credit card payments, so I recommend bringing cash if you have it. Furthermore, I wish I saw before ordering.. there's a 5% off Yelp check in coupon, so keep that in mind too if you come here! So delicious! I've been once pre covid and then once post covid- both times were exceptional, and I cannot wait to return! I am not the biggest fan of their bbq (I'm not a big meat eater), but I love all their sides. I stopped here on the way to the Outer Banks in Dec of 2020, and you should stop here too. There is tons of outdoor seating. We sat at a picnic table in the sun because it was the coldest day of the season, but there is also a Pavilion next to a pond with tons of picnic tables. The 4" pork sandwich with two sides is what my hubby ordered. He got the sweet potato casserole, which he said was deliciously sweet, so it was his dessert side. He also got the hush puppies, which we learned you should dip in the mustard sauce. I got the 5" pulled chicken BBQ sandwich. Do yourself a favor and just go for the 5"; that's what my hubby wishes he would have done after seeing the difference in the amount of meat in ours. It's impossible to find food anywhere, at any price, that tastes better than Currituck BBQ. I enjoy the ribs and beef brisket. They also put a great deal of effort into the side dishes to make sure they're up to par. Very casual, friendly roadside cafe atmosphere. Service very polite and fast. If you drive past this place without stopping, there are no words other than you're an idiot. Fortunately for me, this place is six hours drive from where I live. If it was any closer, I'd be eating there daily and weigh 500 lbs. Shame on the jackasses who won't give them 5 starts. read more

Seems like a non-chain homegrown Carolina BBQ restaurant should beat the pants off of chain restaurants like Mission BBQ.
