Historic perfect location downtown the remodeled Lumberjack is adjacent -- free breakfast! Can't do better in Sonora

Place was horrible as soon as we got into the room after checking in there were hair on all the beds, towels on the floor and all the trash cans were full. The worst part was the ac didn't work so it was 85 in the room. Never come here the service was horrible. read more

Just don't go here. This is one poorly "renovated" hotel. Hoo boy ! Looks nice from the outside...

The one star is for the nice staff. If it weren't for them, this place would get a negative score. This has been the worst lodging experience I've ever had. I had so much hope for this Inn. Reviewing pictures and reviews on line. Their own site promised a "historical" but yet comfortable feeling where stars like Drew Barrymore once lodged. Well if there are any rooms that would be fit for a star, we we're definitely not in one. First off, the room was disgusting when we entered. Floors were stained, remote was sticky, door handles were sticky, the bed sheets looked like it hadn't been changed from the previous guests, walls had holes, scuff marks throughout, we got placed in the tiniest room I have ever stayed out (trust me I've stayed at motels w/ rooms larger than this), no drawers to place any of our clothes in (we were there for 3 nights!!) so we had to lay out our luggage on floor, which took up more space! The plumbing in the shower was the worst for me and second to what sealed the deal for me. (What sealed the deal for me were the majorly THIN walls and the couple that could be heard at different hours of the day having.....I'll leave it to your imagination. Enough for my dog to wonder if the person on the other side was okay. ‍) Back to the shower issue, the pipe kept leaking and this did not allow water to free up to the shower head. When you turn the shower on completely from both faucets (hot and cold faucets were separated-historic remember) the temperature was freezing! Average weather temp in Sonora the weekend we were there was in the low 30s-high 40s, low 50s. What do you want to do when you've come back to your hotel after playing in the snow?? Take a nice long hot shower. NOPE! Worse of all, I had brought this to the attention of the staff the first night I discovered it. They came in and placed electrical tape around the fixture!!! Not even kidding! Brought it to them a second time...NOTHING! At that point I couldn't take it anymore and had to leave! Were it not for the fact that we are currently in a pandemic, I likely would've refused to stay the first night but I am more lenient nowadays. At some point we can no longer use the excuse that we're in a pandemic. This was inexcusable! I sure hope that the owner decides to correct their mistakes because again, I really really wanted to love my stay there. Btw...as we were checking out-cutting our stay short, another couple were waiting to also ask for a refund as they were also cutting their stay short because "they felt lied to" compared to the promises made on their website. The first night I asked for them to fix the plumbing, there was also a dad who came behind me and asked for something to get fixed as well. I don't know if that ever got fixed but for his sake, I hope so. He was rotting around 3 small kids. (Tried to post videos of the shower but I guess Yelp doesn't allow? Will continue to try.) read more

When we arrived, we got the keys to our room and when we opened the door the room was full of another family's suitcases, clothes, etc.. It was clear that the room was occupied and that could have been a very dangerous mistake. We went back and let them know, and they assigned us a different room that they assured was a king bed like we had paid for, and when we walked in it was very cramped and had a very small bed that was clearly not a king. We went back down for a second time, and they finally assigned us a decent and vacated room. The staff were friendly overall, but something about this situation was very off-putting. The hotel is in desperate need of a remodel. The bathroom in our room was pretty gross, the sink was leaky, and roll of toilet paper provided had very little left on it, and was extremely poor quality. The carpets in the room were filthy and clearly have not been cleaned or replaced in many many years. One of the lights next to the bed didn't work. The TVs are all positioned very weirdly and difficult to see from the bed. The other room we had reserved had no soap, so we had to go down and get some. The breakfast was terrible. Disorganized, and zero fresh or healthy options. The waffle maker also kept breaking and there was constantly no coffee left. There were fake flowers everywhere which felt cheap and dampened the overall quality of the hotel. When you go to a hotel you want to feel taken care of and luxurious, and this hotel did not provide any aspect of that. read more

We stayed again recently and booked their suite and we were much happier with our stay. The suite has a very large sitting room, two couches and was bigger than our living room at home! There is also a chair and desk and a sitting chair, along with the standard coffee maker. The bedroom is in a separate room that is smaller but still nicely sized. There is a decently sized closet for storage and a chest if you like to unpack. The king sized bed was comfortable and the rooms were clean. The bathroom was bigger as well, while still keeping the beautiful classic old fashioned bathrooms. We had plenty of room to stretch out, and I'm happy to say the elevator is up and working again. I would definitely suggest upgrading to a suite for a nicer experience, more room and a more comfortable stay. The heaters were a bit loud and the plug was missing from our bathtub, but one was brought up promptly. The hair dryer wasn't very powerful, but I brought my own and the toiletries and towels were on the thin/cheaper side. All in all, a better stay than before but please remember it is a historic hotel and not a chain hotel that is modern and has 5 star accommodations. We found a suite for an incredible price on Hotels.com, and if we found a suite for that price again I'd definitely be back. It's right in the middle of the downtown area with shops and restaurants. Downstairs is an amazing old school barbershop. read more

Great location and historic building. Room was basic and bathroom needed a deep clean.

Enjoyed this hotel and the breakfast. Close enough to walk to downtown areas. It's quaint. Sonora and the neighboring cities have a bunch of California history as does this hotel. So it's not super fancy, not really upgraded. But it was very comfortable and the staff was friendly. Having some history as being haunted was interesting to the kids. read more

It wasn't a *great* stay but I'm giving 2 stars because the people at the front desk were VERY nice and the complimentary breakfast was decent. The bathroom and tiled bathtub were beautiful and I loved the overall vintage feel of the hotel. My single room was very small with a yucky window that faced another wall. There's a nice rooftop pool area with a pretty view down the hallway. The pool was closed during my stay and they called to let me know this 30 minutes prior to my arrival. When I arrived, I didn't know where to park and downtown Sonora was full of traffic. Parking is across the street at their other more modern hotel (forgot the name). I thought it was odd not to offer an early check-in or to hold my bag as it was 100 degrees outside. One lady said to come back at 3 and when I did they still said "no". Walking distance to everything is nice, they give 10% discount at 2 restaurants nearby. Nice shower, comfortable bed. At about 5 AM I was awakened to major commotion outside of my window. It sounded like an army of rats was trying to dig its way though the AC that was attached to the window. I was absolutely terrified... packed up all my things and left. When I told the front desk person about the experience she said it was pigeons. So there's that. All in all, I don't think I'd stay here again. $150 was too costly for this experience. read more

It hardly seems fair to take any stars away from this wonderful establishment. Our room was beautiful and I cannot say enough about the bed it was so comfortable I did not wanna get out of it this morning. Vincent the kitty cat is so cute and adorable and the concierge staff is amazing! I'm sorry but I have to take two stars away because NONE of them were wearing masks and that is absolutely unacceptable in the current crisis and I must say somewhat shocking!!! I do think them for the incredibly pleasant stay, they were so helpful and kind but they need to be in compliance or we will never ever get out of this crisis! read more

Sonora Inn - View of downtown Sonora - Hotels Near Me - Sonora, California

This place was horrible. If there are some renovated rooms or common spaces we didn't see them. The place has great potential and I could envision a very nice property but it is far from that currently. The first room we were assigned to was so nasty we asked to be moved to another. The next room was almost as bad. We have travelled extensively through the US and Europe and have stayed in hotels and motels of all price points. We have never complained or reviewed a hotel property until now. The desk clerk was pleasant and courteous although she entered our credit card expiration date incorrectly three times and caused a fraud alert locking up the card. She also did agree to provide us a different room when we expressed frustration. The carpet in the two rooms we saw, as well as common areas, was disgusting and needs immediate replacement. Our room carpets were so stained my wife would not take her shoes off, and ultimately considered sleeping in the car due to the condition of the room. The room walls all had scuffs and stains with cracked plaster throughout. The misplaced furniture looked as though it had been reclaimed from a garage sale with damaged and cracked wood. The chair fabrics were stained. The bathroom was very bad and upgrades were needed to the chipped and stained porcelain sink and toilet. The bathroom tile was cracked and the sink dripped. The window AC unit worked but the one in the first room had a broken louver. The cheap television only had a Roku which did not work well. The views out the windows of each room were obscured. The room smelled so strongly of Lysol or cleaning products it was over powering. The pool area and adjoining patio has potential. Lots of loud trucks and motorcycles on the street all evening but that is no fault of hotel. Our electronic key card had to be rekeyed twice. According to the clerk, their outdated equipment causes the magnetic keys to be deactivated upon coming in close contact with a cell phone. The continental breakfast was fair. I only very few reviews on YELP and don't mean to be so critical, but our experience was disgusting. I can overlook many things but overall this stay put a real damper on our trip. Stay away until they renovate. read more

Sonora Inn has done it again and provided us with a lovely stay even during this trying time of the pandemic. This time we needed to stay in between towing jobs and Sonora Inn didn't disappoint us weary working travelers. Wonderful staff, helpful, comfortable bed, clean room, beautiful atmosphere and charming town. We choose to stay in a suite (Turned out to be where Grace Kelly stayed) with a much welcomed and needed soaking tub. Lovely room with a little balcony and lots of windows --we loved it. Thank you again!! We look forward to returning in the future after we get a handle on the pandemic and are able to travel for leisure, for a longer stay and to really enjoy the pool. Keep up the great hospitality! read more

Worst stay I've ever had. Room was not clean dog hair everywhere on the blanket and the pillows were on the floor without pillow cases. Took over an hour to check in as there system kept having to reboot, so not officially there fault. But to top it off my husband who had a room key got locked out I was gone and the front desk wouldn't give him a new one as he didn't have his wallet or phone to prove who he was cause they were locked in the room. Tried to call the hotel many times to verify who he was and they never answered the phone. Worst place and employees I've ever had to deal with in the hospitality industry. read more

How would you feel if they GAVE YOUR ROOM AWAY ON YOUR WEDDING NIGHT!!!??? Our wedding was in Sonora last weekend and when we showed up they told us they gave our room away! As I cried in my wedding dress with NO WHERE TO GO the concierge simply told me there is nothing she can do. I asked her to call around to see if any places can get us any room any where and she said she can't! They did absolutely nothing to help or fix what they had done. Two days later still no call from a manger wanting to discuss the matter. I called asking to speak with a manger but she didn't work till the next day, so I was assured she would call by 9:00am. No call till past noon. There best Compensation for ruining our WEDDING night was to offer for us to pay for a twin room and they would simply upgrade us to a suite. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! read more

What a quaint hotel! We chose this location because it is pet friendly however we noticed it is limited to pets under 40lbs, so we couldn't bring our big boy. We are very pleased with the staff, Dalia is Ahmazing! She was very accommodating from the start and really made our stay comfortable and relaxing. Grishum was friendly and helpful as well, these two working side by side was very refreshing as we have stayed in other hotels and staff seemed bothered to assist, but not these two! Would definitely recommend the Sonora Inn if you're looking for a nice comfortable hotel. Our family will return again in the near future. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE! This had to be the worst hotel I've stayed in in quite some time. Not only was it dirty and small but it was expensive. The size of the room wasn't as big of an issue as the dirtiness. The floors were disgusting. The carpets were tattered around the baseboards. The baseboard going into the bathroom are gnarly. The sink would not drain. The windows were so dirty you couldn't see through them. The blinds were broke. The furniture scuffed and in bad shape. Lamp didn't work. So! Instead of taking it out, they just put another one in next to it that did. There was an electricity box half-assed covered in the shower. The iron was on the gross floor next to the iron board. Oh... And the door wouldn't lock. Need I go on...? read more

Lost our reservation! We booked our room in February online and when we showed up with my family of 3, they did not have a record of it. They said there were no more rooms and did not fix the situation. I called reservations.com (as that is the service they use to book online) and was given a case number and promise that a supervisor would call us back and "give us a satisfactory solution". No one called back, there was no solution. Totally unacceptable. I work in the hospitality industry and this is NOT OK. I've been told this has happened before, and indeed the same weekend the couple whose wedding we were attending showed up (for their wedding night?!) and Sonora Inn did not have their reservation!!! Terrible. Book at your own risk. read more

I tend to try to give five stars whenever possible, but unfortunately the hotel was an older hotel and kind of needs to have the carpeting replaced. Also, our room faced the street and it gets pretty noisy out there, and the windows don't provide any kind of sound proofing. So waking up at 5 AM was sort of the call of the day! But, it is a very quaint hotel and the staff did a wonderful job of keeping a rather large group of Harley Davidson Owners HOGs) happy. My choice next time if I ever am staying in Sonora would be to go to their sister hotel which is the Lumberjack Hotel. Part of our group was over there and they liked it very much. read more

DO NOT... I REPEAT DO NOT book a room here ! Absolutely disgusting .. booked a room for one night walked in the hotel and it smelled like sewage .No Parking available in their parking lot .. room had no lock or deadbolt for safety .. Floor looked like it hasn't been vacuumed since the 19 century. pillows were absolutely repulsive, stains on all of them the skirt of the bed was stained with something disgusting sheets had red stains on them shower curtain was filthy bathtub as well. Took some pictures before running out the door .. Worst of it all the lady at the front desk didn't seemed to care saying " sometimes it's not on their route to clean some rooms " and kind of laughed it off like no big deal and yet they're trying to charge almost $170 dollars a night for a room like this !? No thank you I rather sleep in my car . I'd give this place a no star but the app would not allow it read more

We stayed at sister facility across the street but check in was here at this hotel so same staff and check in process. Had a wedding to attend, pre registered with front desk before the wedding because we arrived earlier then the check in time, came back later that night to get our room key and we opened the door to a room that was already occupied. They gave us keys to a room that someone was already in! We booked months in advance checked in that same day and confirmed they had our room. Went back to the front and they didn't have a room for us. Overbooked. Absolutely ridiculous especially because it was our second time leaving our child and we wanted to have a fun night out. DO NOT BOOK if you want a reliable hotel to come back to and you don't want strangers in your room! Extremely unsafe unprofessional and poorly handled. read more

Place needs a major over haul ... it's out dated and dingy ... staff is great however ... especially robin

Beautiful hotel, perfect location. Staff, especially Mac, are accommodating and the hospitality is top notch. Quiet, comfortable. The 2nd floor patio and pool are very nice, with great views. The best restaurants, bars, and shops are right outside the front door and to top it off, the rates are low. Highly recommended. read more

Sonora Inn - Hotels Near Me - Sonora, California

This hotel looks like it belongs on the set of a western movie, which is what appealed to me. All you have to do is look at it to know that it is not new construction. All you have to do is look at the price point to know it's not the Four Seasons or the Ritz. And yet people still blah blah blah about how it's old and not a luxury accommodation. I'm sorry but if you look at the pictures and the price point, and expect the Ritz Carlton, then you're an idiot, and the hotel is not liable for your idiocy. People who get legitimately indignant because they weren't given filet mignon for their hot dog budget are a HUGE pet peeve of mine (see my similar review for the Ambassador Hotel in Waikiki). So let me put this straight: It's a comfortable, basic hotel with the charm of a bygone era, in a cute little gold rush town with good proximity to Yosemite Valley and other area attractions. Spent one night here as part of a road-trip that covered Lake Tahoe, Bodie Ghost Town, Mono Lake, Yosemite Valley, and finally Sonora and Columbia State Park. I was satisfied with the accommodations because my expectations were in line with the photos I'd seen and the price I paid. The parking lot is indeed behind the hotel. I see reviewers howling and gnashing their teeth about that fact. Um... where would you prefer the parking lot be? Inside the hotel? On top of the hotel? Perhaps for convenience sake you'd like to just park your car in your room? People are going on about, "I had to lug my baggage all the way across the street..." So all right, I took a picture from INSIDE my car sitting in the lot. It's the one that's dominated by a pickup truck. Directly out of my car window you can see the low wall that surrounds the parking lot. On the other side of that is the truck, in the street. Now look past the truck to where the flagpole is, see it? That is the entrance to the hotel. It's like... okay I'm freaking TERRIBLE at math but maybe 50 feet away from my car? And from the flagpole to the front desk maybe another 50 feet? I'm NO athlete - in fact, I am a chubby, middle-aged lady. But this was not difficult for me, even on a warm day with luggage in tow. If you can't walk 100 feet give or take without wailing to the heavens about it, then maybe you shouldn't be traveling? Stay home with your oxygen hooked up. The lobby is very pretty. The woman at the front desk was personable. Check-in went without a hitch. The elevator is indeed still out of order - but for what it's worth, it is actively being worked on. Saw workmen there on both days of my stay. The room was spacious, beds comfy. The air conditioner was located HIGH on the wall. Had to stand on top of a bed to adjust it. Personally I was amused by this quirk but it might be an annoyance to others. Because it IS a very old building, some of the doorknobs were shoulder-height on me (I'm 5'3") and others barely above knee-height! Again I simply thought this was a fun quirk. If I'd wanted cookie-cutter, I'd have booked a chain motel. The "rooftop" pool (actually located on the second of three floors) was small but well maintained and open until 10pm. It was an absolutely delightful way to end a warm, dusty day of travel. The continental breakfast was nothing fancy, but it was adequate and free. Cereal, bagels and pastries, hard boiled eggs, fruit, OJ, milk, coffee and tea. The hotel is located on Sonora's adorable, quaint main street right in the thick of many cute little antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. Overall it was a very enjoyable stay. read more

Pretty dirty. Did not even stay the night and checked out after seeing the room. There were stains everywhere and on the furniture in every part of the hotel. Paint peeling and unfinished touch up jobs throughout the hallways. The room had so many stains on the carpet and bedding and it was SO SMALL. literally a closet. The bathroom fixtures were old and had hard water damage and rust. In general, just a gross atmosphere which is a bummer because it has so much potential. Someone else checked out 30 minutes after checking in which should have been my first red flag...I let the front know and they were nice about it, probably because this happens a lot. For this price it is not worth it at all. Don't sacrifice your comfort and standards read more

I didn't get the room I requested with 2 beds one for each adult, was given a small queen room. The first room we were given, the door key cards barely worked. The second room we were given, the door key card worked most, but not all of the time. The following is about the second room: - Smelled like cigarette smoke - Mold on shower curtain - Electrical outlet not working - Mattress sagged to one side - AC/heater would not turn off; I had to unplug it. Having said all that, the staff was very good and as helpful as they could be. The breakfast was good too. The lobby was nicely decorated for Christmas. It is a good location for those that want to be in that area. I don't recommend staying here. read more

Some of the reviews about the Sonora Inn are a little ridiculous. I want to say to some of these people: look, this is an old, historic hotel. Located in an old, historic (SMALL) Gold Rush town. Be reasonable with your expectations. Having said that.... The great things: We stayed 2 nights in a room with 2 queen beds. The room was clean, comfortable, and the beds were fantastic. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is located in the heart of historic downtown Sonora. The downsides: The bathroom sink would fill up/back up pretty quickly and regularly. And the free WiFi almost never worked in the room. Downstairs in the lobby it worked just fine, but not in the room. The bumps and bruises that come with many historic, small-town hotels were really not a problem. We would probably stay here again. read more

We didn't have a bathtub. Super bummed about it. We only have a shower at home so when you pay $207 for one night (on your 11th anniversary) in an old, cramped hotel room you hope for a tub. Our room did have a fridge, microwave and coffee maker. But $207? Geez. Dinner near by? The Thai restaurant near by is amazingly good! Parking is behind the hotel and has cameras. Booked a two queen room in the morning, arrived same day at 8pm. They didn't have my room anymore. They couldn't explain what happened. Front desk clerk took 30 minutes to check me into an alternative: two separate rooms each with one double bed. I had to put one of my kids up alone in one of these at the opposite end of the hotel while I slept with my other kid in a double bed. I added back a star because the general manager was very apologetic at checkout and refunded the charge. The rooms are about what you would expect for the price at a historic hotel. The rooms have very thin walls. read more

Housekeeping is not something that is standard in this hotel. If you run out of towels or need your trash thrown out, you'll have to do it yourself. So, let's start at the beginning. My wife and I arrive at the Inn a little after 4 pm. The girl at the desk, of whom my wife has told me her name is 'Justice,' I believe was a very rude desk clerk. I say that because although she was helping another customer in front of us, she didn't even bother to greet us or even let us know she acknowledged us and to wait patiently while she helped this other customer in front of us, which mind you, took a better half almost 15 minutes. She was too busy yapping to her about the subject of beer. After she was done with that customer she asks ya to wait a little longer as she had to answer a personal phone call to someone she said, "I love you," too (no doubt a significant other) and didn't even bother apologizing to make us wait so long until she finally took care of us, 10 minutes later while she typed away at her computer. Even after we paid for the room, no thanks or anything else about enjoying our stay there. Quite inhospitable this girl I gotta say. Now, the interior of our king size bedroom... I'll let the pictures do the talking: very disgusting and quite an unsatisfying stay at this very outdated inn. Would not recommend this place to anyone who cares about cleanliness or hospitality as this location clearly lacks those important concerns and more! Enough said! read more

The cat was very helpful. He walked us to our clean room. The came in and showed us around as well. The bathroom was clean and the bed was cozy, cat approved. I never do this but I have never been so disappointed by any motel/hotel. I packed two kids and a dog for a snow day with my parents who live in the area. She gave me the key-and then when we pointed it out were told that's just the way it is ..no rooms left none in the area left and we couldn't afford another room that late at night we had to cancel our trip and drive home.
