On our last visit some 20+ years ago (with 3 small boys) we stayed at the City Hotel and it was a wonderful delight. The boys learned to appreciate the Mother Lode and pretended to be City Slickers. Fond memories that I thought could not be duplicated. To my surprise, the town, the 2 Parlor hotels, the shops, the restaurants, the City folk are just as wonderful as ever! The Fallon Hotel is perfect for a City Slicker experience...thanks to Kathy and the team. Loved staying in a front balcony room both times. Fallon Hotel at the end of town, City Hotel right in the middle. Nice to see that the Dept of California State Parks does such a nice job with our tax dollars.

Stayed 2 nights Monday-Tuesday with 2 rooms. Stayed in room 1, 15, and 2. Great staff member, Kathy. There was nothing going on there as far as activity in the ghost area. It was very quiet, we after all were the only one in the hotel for the 2 days...woo hoo. It is nice that the hotel stays locked so people can not wander around in the hotel disturbing your relaxation. The only complaint was the bed in room1 is very firm, so I switched with my son the following night, he had not complained of the firmness.

    The sitting room.

I have never left a review before, but this place takes the cake…read more My husband and I were meeting family in Columbia for a couple of days. Our son and grandkids were staying in a hotel inside the park (historic and for less money), but we really wanted a pool. Before we booked we confirmed that the pool was open. We arrived in the early evening, and the innkeeper said for an additional charge we could have one of the newly renovated rooms. It sounded good. Anyways, the room was not great. Just fresh paint and some garage sale furniture. But okay. Not a big deal. It was clean. and the beds were comfortable. The curtains didn't actually cover the entire window so we put some books up against it and used a safety pin. My husband was more irritated than I was. I thought it was kind of funny. The next morning we asked for the wifi password (as promised) and the innkeeper said they didn't have internet. What?? We could see it right there on our phones. It made NO sense. When we went to use the pool we found that it was locked up tight with a padlock and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. Leaves, dirt on the bottom, and mold growing on the side. And a dog was running around the pool barking at us. After talking to some of the other guests we finally put two and two together. It is mostly a residence motel with a few rooms to rent to the public. They said they got the internet with no problem. Apparently the pool is attached to their private quarters and the padlock stays put. I guess the dogs need a yard. Anyways, don't waste your money. Without the internet and pool as promised it is a fifty dollar room, not $115.

It's obvious to me that they take it seriously too! The room had a pod coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, and free bottles of water. Comfortable beds and cotton (breathable) sheets. Breakfast had cheese omelettes, French toast-sticks, cereal, juice & fresh fruit. All tasty! The location is close to the freeway, but tucked away on a side street that is private. Because of that, it's much more quiet than the hotels along the Main Street in Sonora (15 minutes away). It is an hour and a half to Hetch Hetchy Dam, 15 minutes to Culver's Apple Farm in Tuolumne City, 8 minutes to Columbia and 3 miles from the BESTsourdough bread you EVER ate, from Two Acre Farms! Fantastic location. If I had 10 thumbs, I would hold them ALL up for this hotel! Truly a great stay!

I'm not sure when the transition to new owners happened - March 2026 maybe. Anyway, 4 of us made reservations for Saturday night. We were seated right away by a friendly staff. By the time we left, the restaurant had quite a few diners. This dining room is quite pleasant, pretty much the same as before. Our food was all quite good. The menu is all new - be careful looking at menu photos online - some are from the prior operation. I am attaching current photos. I'm pretty sure the current menu is more affordable and less extensive compared to the prior operation. Nice friendly service. The saloon is separate - we did not try it.

For lunch we had the Red Goat BLT on focaccia with goat cheese and the Gold Standard hamburger. Both of them were excellent. The rosemary focaccia and brioche hamburger bun were made in the restaurant and extremely good. I'm a baker and I know good bread. The bacon on the BLT was thick and had a flavor that really came through. The goat cheese really made the BLT shine! The hamburger had a very generous portion of angus beef burger that was grilled to perfection and the aioli was a perfect condiment. The dill potato salad we both had was perfect for lunch on a warm day. Everything we ate here was perfectly made and for such a beautiful environment and upscale restaurant, the prices were really very reasonable. The dining room was elegant, but comfortable, and our waitress, Natasha, was truly a pleasure--she really took good care of us and had helpful answers to our numerous questions. She is a real star! Unfortunately, we don't live near Columbia so we can't eat here regularly, but whenever we find ourselves anywhere near Columbia we will definitely eat at the City Hotel.
