What a cool visit. We came and were the only tenants in the house that night (went on a weekday - weekends are busier). There is 4 or 5 rooms total and we chose the Rose room. The whole house is like stepping in a time capsule in a way cool way! It is just a few blocks from the historic park downtown. The owner Sue is very friendly, conversational, and is pretty hands off which is nice. The bed was fine, bathroom good, room (loved the decor). There are deer, frogs, etc nearby VERY peaceful. For breakfast we had english muffin, eggs(any way you ask), bacon, and lots of coffee. She has coffee ready by 7pm. For dinner we recommend trying the place in town at the hotel. We also heard the mexican food place is decent. Jamestown and Sonora are nearby as well. For snacks and grocery Sonora will be your best bet there is a market and a grocery outlet there. read more

Just as awesome as I expected it to be. We had never stayed at a B&B before, so we were anxious and had high expectations. Harlan House met them all, and then some. My husband and I were visiting Columbia for a mini getaway and were lucky enough to get a room last minute here. We stayed in the Rose room and it was stunning. It felt more like we were staying at a friend's house than at a stranger's. The room was very clean with an early 1900's feel to it. There was even an air conditioner in the room (which is nice when it's 95 degrees outside) and a bathroom equipped with towels, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The decor was beautiful, and the bed was comfortable. The house is just a short walk uphill from the town of Columbia, but beware, the whole town seems to close around 5PM. With the exception of the saloons and one ridiculously expensive restaurant, nothing is open. The only saving grace was a Mexican joint right outside the town center...it was pretty delicious too. The old school house and cemetery are located directly uphill from the house, and are both sites to see. The owner, Sam, told us that she will be serving breakfast in the morning from 7:30 to 10:30, and for us to come down whenever we wanted. It was nice to have a bit of leeway and not have to stick to a strict schedule for breakfast. The breakfast was fresh and tasty. She offers your choice of meat, eggs, toast, hash browns, and fresh fruit. It was the perfect amount. What I liked most was that if you want your privacy, then you can certainly get it. If you want to socialize, it's there too. The common area is very welcoming, and the grounds outside are beautiful. Sam has made this lovely house a true gem, and we can't wait to go back! read more

I absolutely loved staying at the Harlan House. Since I'm allergic to cats we stayed in the cottage, where the cats don't go. We had the cottage to ourselves with its hottub, great view, and large bathroom! Sam is very kind and welcoming! She showed us around the property and talked about the town and the things to see. To our surprise she had laid out wine in a decantor in the room for us! The room even came with a VCR, a stack of movies, a mini-fridge, and games. My only negative is that the bathroom had a curtain that didn't fully lie closed, rather than a door. In the morning Sam made us a great, hot breakfast in the cute dining room before we took off. My wife and I LOVED this place. It really made our weekend romantic getaway special. The rooms are comfortable and equipped with gas fireplaces. Out the window was a beautiful view of blossoming trees. Breakfast was absolutely delicious. The home was clean and neat except for a clutter of antique clothing and knickknacks that added to the ambiance. Harlan House, built in 1899, is an easy walk to the old downtown and is, literally, up the block from the historic school house & cemetery. On top of everything else, the price was amazingly low. Attended a wedding in Sonoma and I was unable to find a good hotel for the night, so thanks to the internet I found Harlan House. We booked a night with the owner Sam, and thought it looked like a fun place to stay. We were so impressed when we arrived. It is such a lovely home, comfy and inviting, and with all kinds of special touches everywhere. The grounds were lovely, the made to order breakfast delicious, and the beds were wonderful. A lovely two story home with a wine cellar and cottage, there are lots of choices in terms of rooms. It is just up the street from Columbia State Park, and minutes from downtown Sonoma. I wish we could have stayed longer, and hope to visit again and explore the area more! This place truly is a hidden gem! read more

So charming I can hardly wait to go back! My daughter and I stayed here and Sam was so lovely. She was just as charming and wonderful as her lovely home and this beautiful 1800's town. Just as we got our bags out of the car, I look out the window and there's a Doe and 3 fawns right in the yard, under a tree. A stone's throw up the road is an old cemetery that is cozy and well kept and just wonderful! Even though I was just there and it's about 6 hours away, I'm going back in a couple weeks because I would love to spend the weekend here with my boyfriend. read more

My wife and I decided to spend our 15th anniversary in the Gold Country. I wanted to stay somewhere pleasant and romantic within walking distance of Columbia State Historic Park, and Harlan House fit the bill extremely well. * Location Harlan House is one block north-east of Columbia State Historic Park in the foothills of the Sierra. It's gold country, and the attractions of the area can make for a delightful long weekend. * Grounds The grounds are expansive, peaceful, and lovely. We visited in October, and the weather was perfect. I noticed that there were plenty of sun-umbrellas and shady spots, if you're visiting in warmer weather. *Building We didn't stay in the main building. In the dining and living rooms, the decor is grandmotherly, with floral wall paper and knick-knacks all over the place. *Room We stayed in the Cottage, which is a separate building in the back of the property. The cottage was quite comfortable, and has a jacuzzi. We didn't use the jacuzzi because we were out-and-about during the day and it was chilly at night. There are two comfy chairs that my wife wanted to steal because they fit her perfectly (she's very petite). The bed was quite comfortable, if you like a softer bed. Quibbles: 1) The room fridge was out of order. It may be fixed by your visit. 2) The bathroom doesn't have a door - just a curtain that doesn't quite close all the way. 15 years of marriage or no, I don't really want my wife (or anyone else) to look over and see me taking a poop. There was a wine carafe in our room. We're not wine drinkers, so I have no idea if it was good or not. * Food We had three breakfasts. Two mornings were very good American-style meat-eggs-and-potatoes platters. One morning had banana-pancakes. All had very ample servings. The coffee was decent (and we're picky, so "decent" is high praise). The hashbrowns, in particular, we really delicious. Quibble: No water is offered - just juice and coffee. You can ask for water, of course. * Hostess Sam is the owner-operator-hostess. She is warm, friendly and has made sure that there is ample information for visitors available. She's a bit hard of hearing, so speak clearly. She seemed happy to chat, but did not impose herself into conversation. * Cat alert Scooter is the older cat that lives in the house. Scooter couldn't be mellower - I only mention him in case someone in your party is, like my wife, allergic to fur. The house is very clean, so unless you are extremely sensitive, you should be fine. * Value Our cottage was $135 per night. Granted we were off-season, but it was still an excellent value. I don't know if there's a price difference for the summer. * Summary: I'm very glad I stayed here, and I will happily return the next time I stay in the Gold Country. read more

This B & B is so cute. It is on top of a small hill overlooking the town of Columbia. There are several different rooms. We stayed in the yellow room. It has a fireplace and a very cute nook that winds around to the bathroom. The bed was very comfy and had lots of natural light in the room. Breakfast was made when we were ready. It was delicious and fresh! Sam was so nice and had lots of good tips about the town. We also went to the state park and the old school house. The price was very affordable. The town is only a short drive from Sonora and Angels Camp. We will return again for another quiet weekend away! read more

Hello Friends ahh the Beautiful and Qaint Harlam House my hubby and I met Samatha in 2007 or so we booked the wine celler room for our anniversary and let me tell you it certainly was a magical moment for us both and made our occasion extra special the room is so adorable cozy comfortable with the wood stove the Romantic hot tub the brick and the beautiful brass beds give you the historic feelings of yesterdays old past we just loved it we walked right to town which is a beautiful walk ,Since then iv booked my daughters and hubbys in that room and other rooms when there visiting,,,Sooo whether your a local and just want the perfect place to escape for awhile or a visiter visting the sweet lil town of Columbia this is the place to spend your days...Each room is so amazing different each with wallpaper to give each room their names filled with the old Victorian furniture lil treasures antiques and décor each room always very neat clean and just soo they are all so cozy with the feel of the past,The breakfast that sam cooks up is so yummy and very hearty The grounds are always no clean neat with all the beautiful flowers and senery to give you that feeling of being secluded in the trees ,Now about this amazing women Samatha she certainly has the most sweetest spirt from god...Hebrews 13 v 2 Be not afraid to have strangers in your home for some have thereby have entertained angles unawares.... My boyfriend and I stayed here for my birthday weekend. We stayed in "The Wine Cellar" Room. It really was one of the most romantic little rooms I have ever seen. Sam provides you with games and movies and even some wine with chocolates! You have your own little cottage and personal entrance. We went all around Columbia and up to the Pincrest lake the time we were there but we loved returning to our little cottage! I really recommend this place. This is an AWESOME place. We had spotted the Harlan House the last time we were in Columbia while we were walking to the graveyard and school house. This time we were able to stay there. It's beautiful charming and historic. Very peaceful and relaxing. Sam is absolutely charming and wonderful and a great cook! She's a fabulous hostess! We loved the friendly cat too. The place is beautiful and has an interesting history. It is right by the historical town, graveyards and the old school. My boyfriend had never spent time in Columbia and he was amazed with the history. The place is like a walking museum. Whenever I go to Columbia I can always feel the old energy and lingering spirits. Incredible little bed and breakfast. We went here for a romantic getaway and it was the perfect little place. We stayed in the wine cellar room. It gets a little chilly as it used to actually BE a wine cellar, but the fireplace or heater can warm you right up. The tub was beautiful and the whole room was just to die for. So quaint and cozy. Staying here was like staying at a friend's home. Sam offered excellent food and great conversation. We stayed in the Blue room and saw beautiful sunsets when getting ready for dinner. Sam recommended Talulah's and we ended up eating there two nights. (Be sure to make reservations! - http://www.yelp.com/biz/talulahs-restaurant-sonora) Although we used our smart phones a bit, we really 'got away' without TV and the Internet. Easy drives to Jamestown and Murphy's. We will definitely return, think to the yellow room if it's available. I was on a solo trip through Gold Country and stayed here one night on a weekday in the off season, so I had the place all to myself, not including Samantha and the cats. It is wonderfully situated within walking distance of old town Columbia and just across the street from the old school...which I explored early in the misty morning before breakfast as I like to do, and got some fabulous shots. Since I was alone, I also liked that Samantha is adept at discerning when I wanted solitude in the evening and when I welcomed company in the morning. She recommended the only restaurant open on a Monday night in the small town (Mexican place close by). I invited Samantha to sit with me after breakfast over coffee while we chatted, and her oldest cat kept me company while I was eating by occupying the chair opposite. Being a "cat lady" myself, I was missing my own three already. I loved Harlan House, the porch and I loved the company, especially the furry kind. read more

I am so disappointed. I can't rate what the stay was like as I didn't even get to stay. I called Harlan House for reservations back in July. I was told they weren't booking for Oct yet; however, they would call when they were. Weeks later I got a call from them and made reservations for a weekend in Oct. My friend and I booked the cottage. We take a weekend every year in Oct from our men and have a ladies only weekend. Today I called to check on our reservations and was told they didn't even have us down for a room and they were fully booked for that weekend. The lady even said she remembered my calling and making reservations and didn't know how it didn't get in the book. What a disappointment! We even have reservations for a show at the little theater for that weekend. The lady did call around to find us a room elsewhere and recommended a place in a totally different town and the room cost more. I really feel since I was the first to call and make a reservation and it wasn't our fault the people there failed to put it in the book instead of sending us elsewhere the other people should have been canceled. Very big disappointment! read more
