This review is for the ice skating rink at the lodge only. We were staying nearby over our girls' Christmas school break and went ice skating at the Long Barn Lodge. Overall, we had a good time. This is a small indoor rink full of old school vibes. The staff was friendly, but inattentive. The ice was really rutted and had large puddles of standing water from not being resurfaced. I asked twice for someone to run the ice resurfacing machine stored at the corner of the rink on the ice. Apparently, none of the *three* people sitting in the office knew how to run the machine and were only qualified to collect money and scroll on their phones. The one guy who can run the machine was supposedly busy checking people in to the lodge. This didn't stop them from gladly taking more money from new skaters to get on the poorly maintained ice. Deep ruts in the ice are a safety hazard for skaters and should be taken more seriously. It's unacceptable to have multiple employees sitting around and not a single one of them can resurface the ice. My advice would be to check on the ice before handing over your hard earned money. read more

We went to the Ice Rink at the Long Barn Lodge this past weekend, it was my first time visiting the ice rink up here. It is a smaller rink, but perfect for beginners, or spending the afternoon with the kids. This was the first time I been on the ice since I was 10 and it is much harder than I remembered. It was my boyfriends first time ice skating and he got the hang of it pretty quickly. The kids enjoyed it - the youngest in our party had just turned 3 and he was killing it - doing better than most of us. The cost is minimal $20/person and that includes skate rentals. You can also rent the skate helpers for the kids or the adults who are learning. I ended up using one for a while as it was much more difficult to glide on the ice than I remembered. The kids had so much fun, even asking when we could come back or if they can take ice skating classes. We plan on returning before they close for the season. read more

My 8 year old daughter has recently taken an interest in ice skating this year so we decided to take her to Long Barn Lodge's rink while in town visiting friends. It is up in the mountains which is a nice and relaxing drive. While I can't comment on the actual lodge since we did not stay, I can comment on how awesome the skating rink is. The owner has been working the skating rink for 45 years! The skating rink is indoors and massive! The have a small office inside where you sign waivers, pay and get your skates. They offer what I like to call "walkers" for the less experienced skaters for an additional $5. The skating fee is $15 plus $5 for skates per person, but there is no time limit on how long you can stay. There is also an indoor seating area that is warmer where you can people watch, but they also have another big area with tables and chairs. We were very impressed with this place and the staff! We'll be back during New Years and plan to visit again! Dress warm if you visit - it is very cold indoors! read more

The room was clean and had been updated. No AC , it did have a fan that helped circulate the air. It was not busy on Sunday and Monday. I feel that if they did not require a 2-night minimum stay, they would have better occupancy. I would stay here more often if they had one-night stays during the week. As for the price, if they lowered the price some, they would also bring in more people. I would think that would be better than having empty rooms and cabins. We enjoyed relaxing in the green area and the barbecue area. They have chairs outside the room, but can't see the beautiful grounds because the bushes block the view and need to be trimmed. Our daughter LOVES skating here since admission gives you all day access (10-6 or 10-9 on weekends). Very friendly staff, warm seating area with windows on one end, coffee available, good sized ice, and a quaint Christmas theme with lots of windows to enjoy the snow/Sierras outside. Went ice skating here a few years ago. They give out those walkers for the kids to practice on, without adequate staff monitoring. As a result of this, kids obviously race these things without actual ability to properly stop and steer. I was knocked off my feet and landed on my back, after a stupid kid was racing around the ice and crashed into me from behind completely, unexpectedly for me. For something like 10-15 minutes I could not get up as landed on my coccyx (tailbone) and was in excruciating pain. For more than two weeks I had trouble walking, sitting and lying down and had to seek medical care. Luckily I didn't actually break anything. While I was lying down on the ice, the mother of the child, din't even bother approaching me and asking me if I was hurt and simply left the establishment. All the while, there were no stuff members on the ice or around the rink. After I approached the staff in the other room and explained what had happened(where they rent out the skates), they showed zero sympathy or involvement. They simply refused to help in any way, refused to take any responsibility for anything. They also refused to help me identify the people who have done it. Not their problem. The "waiver" supposedly absolved them of any responsibility whatsoever. read more

This place calling itself a 2 star motel is accurate. We stayed in a very dirty room, please see photos. We were attending a wedding on property, or we would have checked out and gone elsewhere. Not only were the beds some of the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on the sink holder was caked in crust, very nasty. The shower was dirty as was the bathroom, the carpet had stains. It's laughable that they charged us 174 dollars per night to stay, it should have been no more than 40 for the room we experienced. It was never cleaned while we stayed and it wasn't clean at check in, also the door did not lock, you could just kick it in, this scared my kids we would not stay again. read more

I stayed in a cabin, and it's very motel quality. I knew that was going to be the case before staying, so I wasn't taken aback as other yelp reviewers. The cabins are funky, but clean enough. Yes, this isn't the Ritz, but it's a pretty location, has a good heater, and is quiet. I've heard they are slowly renovating the place, and I look forward to returning. Be wary of the water. It gets hot fast in the cabin we stayed in, and I recommend bringing a candle. The cabin is a bit musty, but it's fine overall. We didn't bring our pets, but I like that it's pet friendly. Great find in the mountains. I have been coming to the area with my family for many years. My wife and I had a small cabin with kitchenette. Staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds with the bbq area, swimming pool and grass area are so peaceful and welcoming. Loved having dogs around and next time will bring ours. This is not a luxury resort, but a very family and group friendly place to go. A very short drive to Pinecrest Lake, or you can go over to Twain Harte for some pee wee golf and a nice meal. We stayed at the LBL this weekend and had such an amazing time! It's been very hot this summer, so it was quite a delight having a pool to cool down in. The LBL is a great family friendly lodge with plenty of activities, including corn hole games, volleyball, and a fire pit area. It is nearby Pinecrest Recreational Park, and is less than a 2 hour drive from Yosemite National Park. Highly recommend booking one of their cozy rooms or even a cabin for a peaceful, quiet getaway in the forest. We had a lovely time! read more

This was our families second time coming here. We stayed in the giant cabin and it was awesome. It was 101 degrees and our cabin stayed cool with ac all day and night. We also had other family members in the hotel rooms and smaller cabins. Everyone enjoyed themselves. They have a horseshoe area and space for bocce ball. In the day time we drove 15 minutes to Pine crest lake to fish and hang out. Beautiful lake and awesome hiking trails. We will come back to this lodge again. read more

Was hesitant when I booked since I saw the negative reviews but I called and the NEW OWNERS reached out to me and assured me that they had made great changes to this place! NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY - Yes I have read the other reviews. Here is my experience. Yes set up for family activities but the reality is loud drunk people partying yelling and carrying on until 2:00 both nights I was there. No apparent evening or onsite management to maintain a quiet environment and have a sense of safety. Large groups of drunk people are NOT family friendly. Several rooms had the sewer line clog (which according to the plumber) was a "normal event". Not family friendly rooms or bathrooms. No microwave to heat a bottle. No ceiling fans or any fans when it was hot. This cute little place has lots of potential to be a family destination place. I understand the Lodge has new owners. Perhaps they should stay there with their family. Will I go there again? Perhaps. It is priced right with a good location and the staff I did meet were great! The lodge is definitely in rough shape BUT there's new ownership and management and I think in the next couple of months there will be a big shift and change as they're starting renovations around that time! This place has switched ownership so many times it finally feels like they have the right people in place who will do right by this iconic location! After reading all the reviews from TripAdvisor and yelp, I hesitate to reserve room here. It was a last minute trip, not much options had left from my list, so I omitted the motel room and got the cabin for two night stay last weekend. Cabin I: I had stayed at some inn and cheap lodging before, but this one is the worst I had. My expectation was low, i brought my own bed sheets, Lysol and Clorox wipes. The stains and dirts were deep inside, not just on surface. Spider web in kitchen. Sticky cabinet doors. Rubber sealing on shower door was falling apart with molds. Ketchup stains on bed sheet. Not to mention the closet door was falling on me and $25 penalty if guests didn't clean spills on stove nor cleaned and dried the dishes, pot and plates...Worst part- i couldn't sleep, yet could feel itchiness when I lay on bed and could hear wacky sound from heater the entire two nights. Service: only positive was the attitude of owner. He was nice when check me in. Then I didn't see him again on the rest of my trip. Plus no one was in the office when I checking out on Sunday 9ish. Cleanliness was the number one issue. I've got a few bug bites on my back. It's still bothering me two days after the trip. read more

The ice rink was a mess. Stinky skates, the ice had many deep cuts in it and a lot of loose ice build up. It was a really slippery service. Looks like they never maintained the ice. I've been on ice lakes with smoother and cleaner ice. We asked the employees many times if they could clean the ice, they never did. We stayed for 4 days and the ice only got worse. They have a Zamboni they just don't use it. The ice rink employees seemed to just want to do the bare minimum while on the clock. $15 to skate a sloppy rink. read more

We stayed at Long Barn Lodge for one night before heading into Yosemite. It was perfect for what we needed. The beds were comfortable and clean. The staff was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the pool floats provided by the hotel. We would definitely stay again. One con, there was no air conditioning. There was a window fan that helped keep the room cool which worked for us. Long Barn Lodge is an old-fashioned place that brings back the nostalgia for another time. Except this is the real deal, not like one of these faux-50s diners that try to recreate an era that the owners know only from "Grease". It's just what you'd picture the perfect mountain resort to be, and when you drive onto the property, you might find yourself thinking "This can't be California." I'd driven by it a few times, looking for a long barn. Couldn't find one. Found out later that it was demolished before most of us were born. I've never stayed there because I grew up camping in a trailer, going to Pinecrest every year, and as an adult I'd rather drive off the paved road for a mile and throw up a tent. Now, married with child, we drive to a developed campground and throw up a tent. But in early December 2012, we went to the ice rink. No snow below 7800', so this had to do. And again, it didn't feel like stereotypical California. Not like the rinks around San Francisco. It is an authentic mountain rink set among red cabins, a motel setup, and a lawn area with pool outside, with pine trees all around. Like a smaller version of the resort featured in "Dirty Dancing". Inside, it was a smallish, intimate rink, with tables and chairs on two sides. Real ice, kept that way by the 44-degree temperature. Food is available. At a cost lower than at rinks around The City. I was told later that this is a local's favorite, that people in the Greater Sonora Metro Area (!) have come here for generations. Good place to take kids and introduce them to ice skating. Or a date; there's something about gliding across the ice (or falling down) that brings out the romance, with roaring fireplaces, hot chocolate, and Ray Conniff music coming into your head. On second thought, Ray Conniff might be a turnoff. Worth a stop in, and if you like to stay the night in a cabin, that looks good too. One extra star for being the real deal. read more

I was looking for a last minute get away for the 4th of July holiday. I found this little gem and they allow pets. Yeah! I was able to book a room and speak with them to confirm a room that allowed pets. Let me explain my two star review: 5 Stars * Accepts Dogs of any size and multiples in the room. I saw 10lb and 100 lb dogs running about enjoying the lush green lawn. This really was the best part of the stay for us. * The outside grounds are taken care of well. Very pretty with many different wild flowers gracing the property. * Close to Pine Crest Lake - 1.5 Stars - Cigarette smoking allowed right outside the rooms. Since there is no space or privacy between the rooms that meant I couldn't leave the door open to enjoy the view of the pool or outdoors or the smoke would come in the room. Of course that meant I couldn't sit outside in the chairs provided or I would be breathing the smoke. Also - people had their little BBQ's right outside the doors so we got to smell charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid in our room. - 1.5 Stars - Noise - I have never stayed in a hotel, motel, or any other type of lodging where I could hear every move made in the room upstairs. I could even hear distinct conversations. 'But how are you feeling today'. 'Are you still sick'. Also, there is nothing between the hard floor and the ceiling to dampen the sounds. I swear, there was a zoo the first night and then a 3 Ring Circus the next night. Why did I stay a second night if the first was so bad? We really considered leaving and just finding a cheap motel that accepts dogs but the upstairs people checked out so we took a chance and it would cost us one nights lodging. All was well until 11:40 PM when the upstairs neighbors all arrived and spent an hour jumping off beds and running laps around the room. If you go, rent one of the cabins or ask for a room upstairs. But know if you do, the people below you will complain about the circus noises so tread lightly. read more

The rink is the bees knees - mostly because it's the only one around, but who cares. The staff aren't overly friendly, but they're very patient (especially with the little ones). The prices aren't cheap, but I understand they're trying to stay in business. I think it's $12 to skate, $8 to rent skates, and another $5 if you want use one of those glider thingies so you don't fall on your a$$. I guess $20 for the whole day, with in-and-out privileges isn't too bad. The music they play is decent. Parking is never a problem. It's usually not too crowded. The bathrooms are okay, if you can't wait until you get back to your cabin or whatever. Best of all: there's no alcohol allowed, but they never say anything when I show up with a beer! Showed up with no one in the office. Drove and parked towards the rear of parking lot. Passed a cabin with loud music and someone sitting on the porch. Called the number on the office door when we walked back to front. The same lady that was sitting on the porch with the loud music helped us check in. She was very nice. Big storm came in that night that took the power out. Generator came on at some time during the night. Good thing I brought full charged portable batteries for charging. Shower was kind of gross around the edging. Couldn't plug fridge in as it had three prongs and plugs were two. Found the end to a hanging light that had an adapter for three prong to two. Took the adapter and used it on the fridge. Blinds wouldn't fully close and curtains didn't come close to covering the window. Old leather couch in the room. (Wouldn't sit on it) Nice pool area although, no hot tub. Grounds were nice with volleyball net set up. Fire pit area although, no one mentioned anything about actually having a fire. Will try somewhere else next time. read more

We didn't stay at the lodge, but we did go to the skating rink and absolutely loved it. I've got three kids (10, 8 and 6)who haven't skated before and this place was a perfect setting for their first time. Charmingly low key and definitely worth it. read more

We rented cabin L for two nights for this weekend, because we had had a good experience a few years ago at the same lodge in cabin K. Unfortunately, things have changed: We arrived late on Friday night from the bay area and after we got our keys, we found the cabin ice cold. It took us two+ hours to warm it up. Unfortunately, that was not the only problem. The cabin is not in great shape, tiles have come of the counters, doors and drawers are dirty and even the drinking glasses were not clean. In the morning we also noticed mold growing in a vent hole over the bathtub and the shower door amateurishly propped up, a hazzard for our kids. Similarly the closet doors were just resting against the closet shelf, not hanging in their tracks and there was a broken fan taking up half the shelf space. The toaster did not work and the pans were scratched up. When my wife brought up the various shortcoming with the manager, he and his dad started yelling at her to take it or leave it. The worst customer service we've ever experienced! It is hard to not choose AirBnB or VRBO over a run-down establishment like this. The manager told us that they are booked solid. The empty parking lot on a late Saturday morning was painting a much different picture. We left as soon as we could in the morning and did not stay for the second night. I strong advise against staying here, we certainly will not be back. read more

Really friendly staff and a places that has reasonable pricing. Most importantly in freezing weather our cabin had super warm heaters (and three electric space heaters!) 2 extra comforters, and very hot water. Dedicated parking spot as well! The WAS our favorite place until recently we stayed 2-15-2021 for two nights on our last day we woke up or should I say my wife woke up to a bedbug crawling next to her we quickly woke up the kids packed our stuff to leave on the way out I saw the housekeeper and showed him the bedbug he said yeah he knew about them so we drove to the check in office and no one was around so I called no one picked up so I sent an email to the owner she informed me that she was calling pest control right away I asked for a discount because paying all most 400 for our stay just to get bitten by bedbugs not cool she said she would get back to me after pest control came well not surprised they never did shocker right so I emailed them back and they stated they had pest control check out some rooms and found nothing how can you say the found nothing if I'm showing you pictures of the room and the bugs ?? They are in full denial if you search them on her you will see two different pages one with several pictures of nasty ness and I posted on that one and this one with no nasty pictures of their cabin or hotel rooms. It super sad this place is nice or was to us. Could you imagine not knowing they are infested and bringing bugs home with you !!! Thank god we saw them so we could properly clean our belongings without taking our stuff inside our house... ugh sad that the new owners lack of care and cleanliness we started to suspect their lack of care when we entered our room 31 thank got I had Lysol in hand as walking in to be covid safe and noticed dirty bathroom walls and nasty carpet don't even get me started with under the bed never been vacuumed oh wait the couch they had that you sink almost to the ground we are honestly grossed out thinking about it as I type all this ! We've stayed here several times in the hotel. The new owners are very friendly and professional. They've done a great job bringing up this older property. The hotel rooms are larger than normal for the price and very clean with fresh paint and updating. There's a largel pool complete with floats. Stayed here with some friends. Location is cute and cabins have a lot of potential but weren't kept clean or stocked. Got a cabin with 2 queen beds and a pull out sofa for me and 2 friends. The cabin didn't have bedding for the sofá bed or any extra blankets, the sheets on the bed were stained, only 3 towels in the bathroom, and a quarter roll of toilet paper was all we got. No house keeping at all during our stay and the office seemed to not be open much over the weekend to ask for things. read more

When I first walked into the room I knew something was immediately off. The room reeked of cigarettes and the room was obviously dirty. There was a finger nail or something on the table and there was a receipt from big 5 in the mini fridge. Obviously the room had not been cleaned well or at all. This only became more apparent when I entered the bathroom where stains and hair were everywhere. Also, the sink that is not in the bathroom had hair and other stains in it. The beds stunk of cigarettes. The only good thing about the place was the ice rink, but that was overpriced. If you could find anywhere else to stay I would stay there. Never coming back. We bought the living social deal so it was an ok deal. We arrived on Saturday night and got the key to our cabin and when we entered it was freezing. Took a good two hours to warm up. Had a weird smell so we bought a candle. It is a pretty small cabin. Beautiful area but here are the pros and cons. Pros - beautiful area - hot shower Cons - ice rink closed very early on Sunday - came back around 645pm on Sunday and office had been closed for 2 hours - couch is horribly uncomfortable. You sink in almost a foot - limited maid service - really nothing around this place - all the businesses around set their own hours. Beware. Some close three hours before usual - TV is from 1990 - wireless is useless Final thoughts. No fireplace. Uncomfortable bed. Pricey. You can do better read more

I spent 3 night at Long Barn Lodge a week ago and had a great time. The area is beautiful, and the cabins and lodge were very cute. Everything was clean and organized which is a plus to me. We enjoyed our stay because the staff was very friendly, always on top of things and willing to help. They gave us very good recommendations on what we could do in the area or where to find what we needed (food, groceries, entertainment). Because of all their help, we were able to relax and enjoy our time off. Swimming in the pool was the best because the weather was pretty hot. If you decide to go, make sure to visit Pinecrest Lake!. They recommended it to us and it was awesome! The lake is pretty warm, and you can swim, or rent kayaks, motor boats or whatever you are in the mood for. Such a beautiful place! Perfect getaway in the Stanislaus National Forest when planning a ski trip up to Dodge Ridge. Long Barn Lodge has definitely come around with the new ownership. This trip we were pleasantly surprised with all of the upgrades they have done in such little time! Before, it was a basic motel, not the cleanest in the world, the closest we could get to Dodge for my family to stay. Now, the rooms are so welcoming, crisp clean sheets, their cleanliness is now on a higher standard, they were still finishing up painting more rooms and renovating the rest of the motel. New ownership and management definitely have a wonderful team that are delightful to talk to about their plans on renovations and what's expected to come in the near future. They now have better coffee they provide and it's SOOO delicious!! I came here as a kid, and it's so nice that the new owner wants to bring the life and memories back into the property. I'm so excited to see what else is new the next time we book a ski weekend! I'm already making plans to come in the summer to see the new improvements over the next couple of months. My visit this time, under new management was the best time we've had here. It WAS run down for the last few years, but NOW I promise you you'll love it. New ownership this year seems to be very bad news for this property! I have enjoyed staying here over the years but the new owners seem to be augmenting the motel business with some long-term tenants giving the place a bit of a homeless encampment feel. Not cool. Do you enjoy second-hand cigarette smoke? If so , this is the place for you: folks are smoking just outside your room window and it drifts all through your room at all hours if you have the windows open, which you WILL need to do since it's unbearably hot inside the rooms in the summer and no fan or a/c is provided. The rooms and furniture are very dated. Toilet would not flush. The highlight of my stay was checking out and driving away as fast as I could. Won't be back... read more
