We chose Hotel Lumberjack because we needed a place close to a wedding we attended. We toured the hotel months before to ensure it was clean and odor-free. The hotel had been refurbished, and we were happy to book after our tour. The wedding was on June 29th, and we were exhausted when we arrived on Saturday night. Unfortunately, there wasn't a single parking spot available. We called the hotel and were advised to park across the street at the Bank of America parking lot, as they have an agreement. This meant dodging a homeless person and traffic to cross the street. Upon entering our room (a king suite), we were hit with the smell of cigarette smoke, despite these being non-smoking rooms. With no other options, we opened the small windows (which were covered in cobwebs) to try and air out the place. We left as soon as we could in the morning and are now home, airing out our luggage and washing all our clothes. My advice: keep on driving. We really wanted to like this place, but it was a disappointing experience.

Cozy, quaint motel in downtown Sonora. Excellent location that is within walking distance to several eateries, watering holes, and shops. Front desk, check-in located at Sonora Inn located right across the parking lot. Continental breakfast has basic starch items including a waffle maker. Hard boiled eggs, OJ, coffee, bananas, cereal, and prepackaged muffins also available. Front desk clerk was very helpful and kind. The property has obviously been renovated. I found the 2 queen room to be on the small side. I would not recommend this size room for more than 3 people especially if you have luggage. The wall AC/Heat is inches from the bed and is not quiet. Our shower had toenail clippings and hair in it upon arrival. The barn style bathroom door was also quite heavy and difficult to close. Easy parking right out front (motor lodge style). Sonora is conveniently located 90min from Yosemite. 50min from Dodge Ridge, and also near lakes, rivers, gold rush historical sites. Price is reasonable.

I booked this hotel before reading the Yelp reviews. Once I read the reviews, I was really dreading my non-refundable reservation and I was stressed about staying there. However, I had a better experience than other people reported. I booked two dates and stayed in two types of rooms, a double queen, and a single king. Both were upstairs so I didn't experience noise from overhead. Thankfully, I didn't hear my neighbors on either night. I inspected the beds for clean sheets and hunted for bed bugs before unpacking like I always do. Everything looked good. The bathroom was also clean. The floors in both bedrooms weren't so clean, but weren't any worse than other hotels I've stayed at. It's true that this place looks more like a motel since there are no internal hallways and the lobby is about 200 feet across the street, but this was not a big deal. The lobby staff was friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast was what you'd expect with muffins, waffles, fruit, boiled eggs, yogurt, coffee, juice, milk. The whole place has been renovated and looks modern now. Give this place a chance if you're staying in town.

Well it may not be the Ritz-Carlton but this place gets the job done. The Hotel Lumberjack is run by the adjacent Sonora Inn, which is where you go to check in. The rooms are warm, comfy, and clean. It's in Sonora so generally below the snow line, so it's easy to get around, and you can just walk from here to any of numerous restaurants. The included breakfast (with a waffle maker!) is a nice touch too.

Our bed was comfy, more on the soft than firm, but did not hurt my back whatsoever. -OMG THE BREAKFAST. Kim is an UH-mazing cook. Perfect portion, flavor, not too heavy/complex, but certainly delicious. I am glad to have visited Sonora, but not sure if I'd make it an annual trip, to replace it with Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, or Napa. Despite the mixed reviews, we decided to give this historic 1850 inn a chance. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We stayed in Room 14, which was advertised as having a queen bed, but it was actually a full-size bed. The room itself was very small, and while it contained beautiful antique furnishings, it felt neglected rather than charming. The window air conditioner was outdated and awkwardly installed, the shower barely drained, the toilet paper holder had been poorly glued back onto the wall, and the towel bar repeatedly fell off. The old wall heater also appeared outdated enough to raise safety concerns. Outside, the disappointment continued. The swimming pool was green, the grounds felt unkempt, and the property overall looked dirty and cluttered. Instead of feeling like a treasured historic inn, it felt like a place that has been left to slowly deteriorate. What makes this especially sad is the incredible potential this property still has. After returning to our room, I looked into the history of the Gunn House and found photos and information from the previous owners. It was evident they had intentionally preserved the hotel's historic character and created a warm, inviting atmosphere. Since the ownership changed around 2017, it appears that only the bare minimum has been done to maintain the property. Many of the photos currently used online seem to reflect the inn during its better years rather than its present condition. The Gunn House deserves better. It is a historic treasure with rich Gold Rush heritage, and it should be restored by owners who are passionate about preserving its legacy. With proper investment, thoughtful restoration, and professionals experienced in historic properties, this inn could once again become one of Sonora's crown jewels. Instead, it currently feels like a neglected landmark waiting for someone to bring it back to life. I genuinely hope that happens one day, because beneath the grime and deferred maintenance, you can still see glimpses of the beautiful hotel the Gunn House once was.

I'm a really picky rider, in that I want to make sure the establishments I choose to ride with take great care of their horses and the staff are seasoned riders/guides. One look at these horses told me everything I needed to know. All horses were so well-muscled and well fed, and very well behaved. The staff from the receptionist to the guides were wonderful. Lily especially, she really stood out as a warm and caring guide, and knew every horse by name. Riley was such a responsible guide, kept checking to take sure our cinches were tight throughout our ride. The terrain was very very rugged and not for the faint of heart, but these horses were very sure-footed and freakishly agile, climbing the rocks like mountain goats. We gained a thousand feet of elevation and they weren't even out of breath. After 3 days spent with them, we didn't want to go home! Needless to say, we will be back in a few weeks for more.

The horseback ride up to Kennedy Meadows Lake is a must-do, and the restaurant serves some really great food. The weather was absolutely perfect, and there's just something special about unplugging and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The only downside is the reservation process. You have to book about a year in advance, and it can take a lot of phone calls before you get through. It would be nice if there were a waitlist or a more streamlined reservation system for returning guests. That said, we appreciate the old-school charm and usually just take whatever dates or cabins we can get when the opportunity comes up. Despite the reservation challenge, we keep coming back year after year because it's such a wonderful place to make family memories.
