While I hadn't been there in a long time, I was pleased by their offerings. The sashimi dinner was good, the only reason I don't refer to it as great; is that I would have preferred a larger portion of saba/mackerel. The poke hand roll was good and about what I expected. The spicy salmon hand roll was good, but admittedly I've had better. Not very spicy and no cucumber. Lastly, I wanted to try the Shrek roll. While I can't recall all of the ingredients, I know it had cheese, which there was a layer of cheese on top of the rolls. The rolls, while cooked were cold and the cheese was congealed on top of them. I would not recommend this one. And while I wouldn't recommend Sonodas as a cheap sushi place, I would recommend their sashimi dinner. I would consider going again, even if service can be a bit slow. Thanks. read more

Very fresh sushi served in a casual setting. Came in with some friends who know the owners and highly recommended the location. I opted for the sashimi dinner which came with a very well-prepared miso soup that had a wonderful rich flavor. The sashimi was a generous serving of six types of seafood that were expertly cut and of a nice size. The tuna was ultra fresh and I was happy that it was not your typical grainy defrosted mess you get when ordering sushi away from the coasts. I also enjoyed the snapper which was topped with a bit of minced ginger and slivered scallions, quite tasty. Recommended by my Japanese co-work to be the best sushi restaurant in town. Sushi at this place is more of the traditional Japanese style, although you do see sushi rolls like "Dragon roll" or "firework roll" catering costumers who are not used to the originals. Fish here is fresh and it is honestly the only thing that matters. My favorites are the mackerel, the yellow tail, the tamago (egg) and the tuna. Before I discovered this place, I have been going to "fancier" places like the Sushi Den where I would call the food "fusion/creative sushi". As much as I like Sushi Den as a great place for date night/ happy hour/ business gathering, Sonoda is the one I go to when I miss simply the taste of GOOD FISH! read more

If even half of them put the same effort into their food that they do in the decor... my God we'd have amazing food. Sonoda's has outlived more good sushi restaurants than most people have been to and why? It is because their focus has remained on the heart of Japanese cuisine. Quality, attention to detail and polite excellent service. Each piece of sushi I have had from Sonoda's is cut perfectly. The tonkatsu is to die for. The negi maki is so good, my best friend still often talks about it almost 20 years later (that's 100% true) I am glad Japanese cuisine is so popular and thrilled to see so much interest in the culture and food and I love the new creative plating and fusion type rolls but Sonoda's is the benchmark one should compare to. read more

I've been here before and it had been pretty good. I came back to eat their salmon donburi. Here's the interesting thing. The raw salmon was half cooked. On top. And not on bottom. The texture was really weird for me because I'm used to eating sushi donburi with raw sushi (like I had last time at this restaurant and at other restaurants). The rice used to be seasoned well but there was too much vinegar in the rice. Service was not that great. I got my salad with my meal instead of before. I got my soup when I was halfway done with my meal. I waited for my bill but the waitress didn't come. So I just got up and went to the register myself. Sonoda's is excellent in my opinion because of the quality and freshness of their seafood. The staff as well are extremely engaged with their customers and make an effort to remember you if you come again. With a small straight forward menu, Sonoda's doesn't have as much choice as other places, but their beauty lies in their quality and unique ingredients. I've gotten to try Uni for the first time ever at this location. Service is prompt, and everything I have tried so far has been excellence itself. This place has a friendly atmosphere and great sushi! I sat at the sushi bar and had a great time talking with the sushi chef, Jimmy, who is a very kind man and an excellent sushi chef. I have celiac so I always make it a point to call first and find out about gluten free options before I visit a restaurant. The host who answered the phone was very knowledgeable and their menus even have GF indicated next to the gluten free items, which is pretty rare for a sushi bar. I had some nigiri that did not disappoint and tried a Cindy roll, which was very unique with melted cheese on top of it. Let me tell you, it was delicious! Also, all of the sauces here are made in house, using gluten free Tamari, so you don't have to nix the sushi sauces like in lots of other places. They even make their own gf eel sauce! Eel sauce is one thing I miss most when out to sushi ever since having to go gluten free, so for me this was a big deal and is DELICIOUS! The unagi is not gf but the sea eel is. I only come here for the chirashi - best I've had in town! Fresh fish, good portion for a reasonable price. I've tried a few of their specialty rolls and haven't been impressed though. Friend got the lobster ramen and liked it. Overall - fresh fish, quick and attentive service. My go to when I'm craving chirashi. read more

This was ranked highly for sushi spots in the Aurora area. Was looking for some dinner after landing at DIA and chose this spot. Staff was very warm and the chefs behind the bar were extremely friendly. I ordered a salmon roll and the crispy onion sushi special. Unfortunately wasn't a big fan of the sushi special and scraped off most of the fried onions. It was also drenched in the sauce. I've finally learned how to not order half a dozen sushi rolls and stuff myself. So that's good. We just arrived home from San Diego, ran to the bank in Aurora, and were now very hungry and craving sushi. We found a place that we both agreed on, but it turned out to be closed on Mondays. Tis was a second choice. Not wanting to risk a less than 4 star sushi joint, this was our only other option. And it was very good. The entrance is in a weird part of a strip mall. Around the corner from all the other entrances. After walking in, it took a few minutes to be acknowledged and sat. Not terrible. But at the time, we were very hungry. We looked over the menu, found a few items (green hornet roll, Joe's roll, sashimi lunch), ordered an edamame and a soda, and were off. The sashimi lunch came with a salad and rice so we split those. The rolls were very tasty and the rice was super soft. However, they started to fall apart when we picked them up. Not a lot. And recoverable. But not what you're looking for. We finished up with the fried green tea ice cream. Overall, the sushi and sashimi were very good. Especially for an land locked restaurant. The waitstaff were very friendly and attentive. Sorry, but I wasn't impressed. I stopped by for happy hour after work and was disappointed. The happy hour prices, especially for nigiri, were higher than other places. I got a few rolls and hoped for some quality to go with the price. Nope... See the photo I added (salmon & spicy scallop rolls). The rolls were small, there were no veggies (no avocado or cucumber in a salmon roll?) and they were very basic. Nothing special. On the bright side, the baked yellowtail roll was really tasty! That one at least tasted like it had some effort put into it! I waited for an eternity for them to bring me my check. $15 for 3 tiny rolls and I'm still kind of hungry. My favorite sushi place in Denver was Sushi Sasa in downtown. But I'm sold to Sonoda's... again. When I lived in Denver as a college student, Sonoda's was the place to hang out with other Japanese friends occasionally. But after moving up Ft. Collins almost 20 years ago, because of Aurora location, the place had completely slipped out of mind. Aurora is known for Korean establishments so my go-to-food had been Korean when I was in the area but 2 weeks ago, something has made me stop here. My way to see if sushi is good and authentic is ordering Chirashi. Pieces of fish and rice, simple enough but I could usually tell how good the place is from how the chef presents Chirashi. Theirs is so delicate, a real thing as you see in Japan (I must say it is prettier than what I have seen back home indeed.) Sonoda's isn't a white table cloth restaurant like Sushi Sasa. It's not a social spot like Sushi Den. But when I crave sushi, I don't need anything else but good sushi. The majority of fish is imported from Japan. You can't go wrong with the freshness and authenticity. Every bite takes me to the heaven, yet, I feel like I'm "home." But the biggest reason why I have become a fan was the chefs, Kawafune-san and Tajima-san. They laughed at themselves by saying they were old fashioned - when you step in the place, you hear them welcoming you. When you leave, they thank you individually. That's the manner real sushi places back home do. I just adore their Japanese hospitality, "omotenashi." I never feel that from the chefs at Sushi Sasa nor Sushi Den. Glad that the place is 80 miles away from home. If it were closer, who knows I might end up going a few times a week without looking at the inside of my wallet! read more

Found a place that soothes my West Coast sushi snobbery. The fish is cut correctly, served at the right temperatures, and freshness. Very nicely done. It's not the fanciest, nor least expensive (Good sushi isn't cheap) but the several times I've been here have not disappointed. I wouldn't say I'm a roll expert, I'm more of a traditionalist. Okay, I'm sold. Sonoda's has been consistent every time I've been here. This is officially my go-to Japanese/sushi restaurant. Since my last review, I've tried countless other sushi restaurants in Denver and didn't find one that really wowed me. They actually had me running back here! The caterpillar roll here really just melts in your mouth and the different ingredients blend perfectly together. The avocado roll usually has the perfect rice to avocado ratio, and the house salads are always yummy. The tempura that comes out with the nabeyaki udon is always hot and crispy as well! At my most recent visit, I tried the unakyu (freshwater eel) roll. The roll looked a bit flimsy (it fell apart when I tried to pick it up), but the roll was filled with meaty eel (I asked for less skin), cucumbers, and some avocados with some eel sauce. It was very tasty! Though, I think the caterpillar roll wins the eel roll contest. My family recently brought uncle and aunt from California here and they even said that this place had good sushi. They both had the sushi deluxe and said the fish was fresh and everything was really tasty overall. The price for the food here is also very reasonable, considering the quality of the food. Most places will be around the same price or a bit more expensive, but the quality of the food here is really unbeatable. The total for two came out to around $28 (before tip), and we even had dessert! In addition, the green tea ice cream that they serve here is perfectly creamy, not unbearably sweet, and the perfect palette cleanser after a delicious, light meal here. I have to stop at Sonoda and visit Makoto San and Jimmy San every single time I am in town. This place is homey, with a nice staff that make you feel at ease. Everything is so fresh and high quality you would think you are close from the ocean. They don't compromise quality for quantity, and when you get a roll you get a good balance of ingredients, not just rice. Rice makes or breaks sushi though, and their is seasoned well, but not overly, and has good texture. Lots of options, great ramen as well, meat dishes... Impossible to not find something to eat, quite the opposite as it is hard to pick. Today I got the freshest sweetest uni in a very long time, in Denver, and I live in San Diego! Go figure... Had a great custom roll that had everything a good roll has: flavor, texture (crunchy and creamy), sweetness and a little spice. This place is great for people who love sushi or want to discover sushi, and want to have a great meal. read more

The food......was well done. The sushi was fresh and beautiful! The teriyaki chicken was in a light teriyaki sauce and it was very tender. Yummy and crisp steamed vegetables. Be careful, they brought me a Saki that wasn't on the menu and when I got the bill, it was more than my meal. They eventually took care of it, just make sure you know what you're drinking! read more

My all-time favorite sushi place in the metro area was Geisha on Parker & Mississippi. When it closed years ago, I was so sad (yes, please serenade me with your miniature violins). But then I realized that frankly, I needed to pull up my britches. There are plenty of other sushi places in Denver and beyond and for me, Sonoda's of Aurora fits the bill nicely. Just think, I can sit down and be treated to a piping hot bowl of Miso soup, or an ever-changing array of Oroshi (little vegetable or seafood plates - the last time I was there it was a marinated octopus dish). Then I can stuff myself with sushi and sashimi. Do I want to do Chirashi (assorted sliced fish over rice)? Perhaps some Chutoro (fatty tuna) or Kaibashira (teensy little scallops) or Uni (yes, sea urchin milt - "the guy stuff" if you know what I'm saying). Or a veggie roll - maybe some Natto (stinky fermented soybeans) or Yamagobo (crunchy burdock root)? And if I'm not in the mood for sushi (say WHAT??!?) there's always tonkatsu, teriyaki and tempura to titillate me. Cheer up folks! And savor Sonoda's. read more

Sometimes friends trump food - not often but sometimes. On this occasion I was invited for sushi at Sonada's with a couple of old friends, so the sushi was really secondary. We got there before 6:00 pm, in time for Happy Hour prices, 2-fers on draft beer (Coors & stuff, bleh), wine and some specials on sushi rolls and nigiri. I think this is a safe bet for you if you are in this area, off I-225 and Parker area. We pretty much splurged (they had a couple of appetizers & drinks before I got there) and our meal came to $90 for three people. I've spent more on two people. Nothing wrong with the fish but the rice served with my nigiri was watery, soft, and lacked seasoning. While our server was pleasant and helpful, she took a while to refill water and never refilled my tea. I hope this was just one off night. Absolutely AWFUL. We ordered Togo food thinking that a restaurant 4.4 stars would be pretty good. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Dinner and found this. Literally steamed vegetables with chicken breasts and barely any sauce. I am furious something like this cost me almost $20. We got to Sonoda's just before 9 on Saturday and were surprised by their late night happy hour. There were drink and food specials. My boyfriend got house sake and I had wine, both buy one, get one free (and they were heavy pours)! We both had miso soup and an order of egg rolls as an appetizer. We ordered 4 sushi rolls and our bill was 45$ - great price!!! The staff here were very prompt and very polite. The restaurant itself could use some cosmetic updates, but we were otherwise impressed!
