I have to admit that I was a little bit worried about bringing my internet-bought cello to the shop for adjustments after reading one the the review here. However, my daughter has been taking violin lessons here and I know all people there are nice, so I asked them if they could help me adjust my internet-bought cello and they were more than happy to help. Connie explained to me why the cello was different and the luthier Jason clearly explained all the adjustments he made. They were friendly and patient. Although I know for them professionals to see an on-line bought instrument can be painful, they did a great job to help as much as they can. When I came home, I couldn't wait to try my adjusted cello, and, oh man, the sound, the feeling of fingers and the bow strokes were all much much improved. They are still lots of parts in my cello couldn't be fixed because of the original setting, but I am quite satisfied now. I have learned a lot about cello and I truly appreciate it. read more

I came here twice: the first time I needed a shoulder rest that would fit me better. They were very helpful and gave me a lot of information. The second time, my bow suddenly wouldn't tighten and they diagnosed the problem right away and took care of it free of charge. Saturday afternoon about 4. I opened my violin case to practice and the e-string had broken at the loop. I called Sono and was told they could fix it in just a few minutes; come on in. Besides putting on the new e-string, Jason put a tiny string protector onto the fine-tuner so the fine-tuner metal won't cut through the metal string again. I'd have bought the replacement e-string from Sono, but they didn't have the model string I wanted and already had; so Jason put on what I had, explained all that he did, and didn't charge me. The staff is really friendly and helpful. They have a lot of patient to explain you everything in details and they are not in a rush to service you. We just rented a Chello for our son and also changed the strings of a chello for an adult and they changed them on the spot. I was looking for a luthier to upgrade my daughter's first electric upright Bass. I found Jason. He is amazing!! He didn't shy away from a challenge and after upgrading the strings and most recently the bridge, the bass sounds great! This is the best place to start for someone that needs help with string instruments. Knowing nothing about music myself, I had no idea how to help my 5 year pick a violin, but Connie was very patient explaining things to me and answering all my questions. On top of that, she is super good with kids, she was able to keep my kid calm (instead of running around in her store) with a few tricks up her sleeves. Prior to coming in myself I spent a substantial amount of time researching, reading reviews and calling all the other competition. Its a low pressure, unpretentious experience where you are surrounded and supported by professional, experienced, knowledgeable staff. You will find accomplished and gifted teachers, private lessons, options to rent or purchase your instrument and an on-site, highly skilled luthier (Jason). It's been 8 months since I walked through their doors, opted for renting my daughters violin and on-site private lessons (virtual was also offered). The rental process was simple and seamless (thank you Connie) and after a few free private lessons with different teachers we could not have found a better teacher than Yo. I would like add that beyond Yo's impressive background and experience is an extra-special gift for teaching. My daughter, who pleaded with me for lessons, occasionally experiences severe anxiety and It was Yo's calm demeanor, light-heartedness, creativity and encouragement that has helped my daughter continue her interest and growth--and that was the whole point of this journey. I came here with a friend, I walked in to find a teacher teaching a three year old music. He was down the floor and when she moved on he followed her and gently bright her attention back. She was having so much fun. One bench down I was engaged in conversation with the office manager, who is also an adept artist- her art decorates the store walls- She was telling me of how they hosted a benefit for a local artist with disabilities, and raised 10k. They have 4 teaching rooms and the fee is the lowest I've heard of in the Bay Area. They work with Artists to help them by renting instruments at reasonable prices, keeping studio prices low, referrals, etc.. read more

I brought my cello, lent to me by a friend a few months ago, to Sono Strings on the recommendation of my cello teacher, for an adjustment on the pegs. They explained what was needed, and why. They did the repair and refused to charge me. I just brought the cello a second time to Sono to talk about an informal appraisal. They told me what they thought it was worth, explained why and wouldn't charge me. They couldn't have been nicer or more professional.
