BEWARE!!!!!!! We paid for a Brand New upright piano Fri afternoon (sales rep: Ann W), Saturday morning one arrived with a lot of dust, fingerprints(which they said is normal), a minimal paint discolouration patch, and even a small piece of dried food on the inside corner of left leg(she said it must be because the workers in Japan were eating while moving the piano) . I immediately and strongly doubted it's supposedly brand new condition, but they kept saying it's new from warehouse , I asked for the warehouse phone number to confirm the model& serial number matched mine, the Warehouse guy said he doesn't have the number, but he magically knows the piano was picked up and delivered to me. Went to the shop to talk to the lady, she couldn't explain why a Brand new piano would look like this, and came with no box,just plastic wrap,but still promise it's new. She offered to give me the other display piano in store although I paid for a new one. I refused and asked for a refund. Upon researching and reading about others' experiences about the same issue, I found out " MANY dealers would sell refurbished or display pianos as new, some even erase the old serial number and paint/put a new one there(I'm not able to verify this theory but it's worth keeping an eye on)". When sellers become this dodgy , how the ef do non-piano- professional buyers verify the real condition of their pianos ? Check your piano as soon as you get it, wherever you bought it from, even authorised dealers couldn't be trusted apparently. read more

I just had a similar, poor, experience to "Asha M." I called Music Exchange to enquire about a particular used piano, and a man answered the phone as if he couldn't be bothered to talk to me. He seemed to know little about the selling points of the instrument, and was uninterested in having me look at the piano. When I asked the price of the piano, he listed a price that is $20,000 more than anyone else online lists the piano for. I asked several times why it was overpriced. This isn't the exact conversation, but I'll try to paraphrase: Him: it's a special order. Me: in what way is it special? Him: it just is. Me: but what makes it different from other models of this piano? Him: it has nice carved legs. Me: yes... they all do. How about the sound board, action or keys? Him: look, it's hard to find a piano nowadays. Most people will buy them sight unseen. Me: I'm a serious musician. I'd like to hear an instrument before I buy it. And I'm still interested why this one is priced so high. What's special about it? [conversation carried on in this useless vein, until I'd had enough] Me: I hope you don't mind my saying, but you're rather rude and you don't seem interested in telling me about your piano. I'm ready to do a cash sale, but you don't seem to have any specific information about this piano. Him: you're right. You'd just be wasting your time. At this point I ended the conversation, somewhat stunned that he had not encouraged me to come in and play the piano, or look at a different one. Hey all. This review is about the customer service I just received over the phone (Sept 7 2020 ~noon). I called to inquire about piano rentals, which was clearly advertised on their website (checked on Sep 7 2020). The lack of effort from the person on the phone (or worse, effort put into trying to be off-putting) was so unimpressive that I felt bad for him. It would have been better for him to not pick up the phone in the first place. The entire dialogue was curt, irritated, lazy responses. The summary below is a paraphrase, not verbatim. Me: Hello, I'd like to inquire about piano rentals Him: No we don't do that. Me: Oh, I see. You know, your website says you do Him: No we don't have pianos. Me: Oh... Are you only for services? Him: No. {pause} ... pianos have been back ordered for months, due to covid. Honestly you're going to find it hard to get a piano. (sounding irritated at this point) Me: Oh. Actually, BTW, that's not true-- (the other shops where I found available pianos were Colton Piano and Silicon Valley Piano, FYI)... Him: Oh really? Me: Yeah... (now, wanting to stop the conversation) Oh well... Okay, thanks have a good day Him: {just hangs up. No "thank you for calling" or "No problem, goodbye" or "You too, have a good day" or even "ok bye" } One would think he could afford to speculate when pianos might be available again and advise me to call back then, or if that is too uncertain (which is understandable) at least address the fact that the website is out of date, as that's a contributing root cause for my irritating inquiry. It confuses me when a person doesn't understand a tiny bit of positive effort goes a long way. It was like my phone call really inconvenienced him. If there was a legitimate reason (i.e. he was having a bad day for a real, more important reason) the better approach is not to pick up the phone. Once you decide to pick up the phone, you're now signed up to put in effort, and if you're not going to bother, the fault is yours. I came away from my phone call to Music Exchange, only more appreciative of the interactions I had at Colton Piano and Silicon Valley Piano. Both of these other stores leave you with an experience you expect, where you are welcomed to discuss pianos, go figure, they enjoy selling pianos to people interested in playing piano, and are interested in people feeling good about the piano they just bought. read more

I ended up leaving the first day to check out the Yamaha roadshow at Costco, and while it was slightly cheaper at Costco, decided that the great service was worth a few extra dollars! Granted, you can purchase Clavinova from anywhere, online - new or used, but I preferred to buy from Yamaha dealer because: (1) they have future upgrade policy (2) free lesson is available for those who buys (3) delivery person can set it up for you I found out that price was pretty competitive to online stores, then why not purchase from a place where they can guarantee the quality and delivery? I got mine delivered the very next day of my purchase . The guys who delivered my Clavinoa was very professional and efficient - they took the piano out of box, built it in front of my eyes and set it up in a matter of 15 mintes. When I am purchasing something that I can't fix and paying some moeny for it, I'd rather want the "guarantee" than "discount". Paul at Yamaha was really helpful. Their location is on Winchester about a mile south from Santana Row (near Toys R us). They have a nice two story building show room that has a piano playing space, good selection of Yamaha, Steinway and various used pianos. Looked at Yamaha Disclavier self playing piano. The cheapest was $17k with their Stanford music dept sale. The Disclavier sticks out and still has a CD drive with a USB port, but you can also use the Disclavier iOS app (free) to easily control your piano instead of another remote! Get the sense they'll catch up to QRS and PianoDisc and make the next version completely hidden. Going to check out the Costco Yamaha road show and compare it to the Stanford sale pricing, the big difference being you can use your Amex and Costco's return policy. read more

My wife and I are beginning Piano players. Our 5 year old son has also taken a basic piano course. We've been getting by with a small Yamaha keyboard that we both grew out of and we were shopping for a full size digital or acoustic piano. After researching pros and cons for digital vs acoustic pianos, we were thoroughly confused. So, based on a recommendation from a friend, we decided to actually drop by Greene Music in San Jose. This turned out to be a good decision. We showed up on a Sunday morning. We were greeted by Uly (Ulysses Venci). He asked us about our piano proficiency levels and promptly narrowed down our options to one of two entry level Yamaha upright pianos - B2 and B3. He played both the pianos (he actually plays quite well). The B3 had a bigger and more pleasing sound. But we asked Uly that we had a relatively small space (a 10' by 8' room) for the piano and whether there would be a perceptible difference in the sound quality between the two. He said probably not, and so we settled on the less expensive B2. We got a quote - which was very reasonable (and actually the best value overall). We went back home, thought long and hard about the investment, and finally decided to go for it. I called Uly after 8 or 10 days, set up an appointment to go make the purchase. The whole process went very smoothly. He also set up the delivery, and he subsequently and patiently rescheduled the delivery a couple of times based on my request. Overall, our experience was great. Ulysses is an experienced and knowledgable salesman. He did not try to pressure us into buying an expensive piano (or buying anything at all). He patiently answered all our questions. He offered a competitive price. One of his casual remarks struck a chord with both my wife and myself - "Having a good acoustic piano at home improves the quality of life". My husband and I had a great experience buying from Mike and Gordy at Music exchange in October 2019.  We came in during the annual sale when the public is offered the discounted prices given to the universities.  My husband and I both grew up playing Yamaha pianos and so we were leaning toward a Yamaha which we felt most comfortable playing.  We had been to several other music stores in the area and Music exchange had the best prices and selection. On our first trip we met Mike who was super friendly and knowledgeable.  He showed us the different pianos and differences and played some beautiful music for us on the pianos for us to hear the differences between them.  He loaned us a piano template (for $50, returned upon bringing it back) to bring home to plan what size piano would fit for the piano room at our home.  When we returned the piano template to the store we met Gordy who helped us with the final decision in choosing between a C1X and GC1 disklavier.  Gordy threw in delivery, a small discount, and a free tuning.  Delivery was smooth and seamless.  Even a few months after we had the piano, we had additional questions with troubleshooting some features of the piano and Gordy was very responsive over the phone and by e-mail.  My husband and I love our new piano and our experience and we would highly recommend Music exchange to others looking to purchase a piano. read more

Greene sent a delivery company who delivered and setup the piano yesterday. It sounds perfectly in tune and looks and sounds amazing! We've been looking for a piano for a while, ended up visiting Music Exchange to look at their showroom and try the Yamaha hybrid pianos. Paul, the store manager greeted us and pointed us to the pianos. He patiently answered our questions. I was surprised that they were able to schedule delivery the next day. The nice thing about buying from the Music Exchange is that they are one of the few authorized Yamaha dealers around here. A week after we took delivery of our N1X we noticed that the lid (fallboard) did not close completely. We contacted Music Exchange and Paul was able to arrange a technician out here. We had not tuned the piano for a while due to the pandemic and recently got Carol Ismail (who also works at Music Exchange) to tune our piano. She did an amazing job - very knowledgeable, thorough, perfect turning job. She even came by for a checkup after 5 months for a mini tuneup but she found it still in good tune so moved the appointment out a year. She also contacted Yamaha for ordering a broken hinge part of the bench. I can tell that she is dedicated to her profession and does her work with passion. I usually never leave the review, but this time I had to, because Greene music offers 'free tuning coupon' after leaving the review in Yelp. I thought this is a win-win for both, as they got more reviews and I got free tuning once. While leaving the comment, I want to be sit on neutral stance. I purchased Yamaha C3 for my daughter about 7 months ago, when Greene music had big liquidation sales (I think this store was sold to Greene around that time). The store was full, crowded of people, and I thought we may not get attention. After talking to Scott (?) - umm, I forgot the salesperson's name, who told me that he flew from San Diego to assist these big sales -, I think (probably I'm wrong) he sensed that I'm a serious buyer. No matter what it is, we got really enough explanation, went through all the pianos, got enough advice why we have to go with C3 rather than baby grand piano, etc... It wasn't lesser than any other dealerships I visited, and I give 4 stars for the passion he showed me (which finally made our decision to buy a grand piano on that day) When it comes to sign final purchase contract, we were hesitated to make a decision about the payment options (hey, this is a 30K+ Odyssey sitting inside my house), they showed all the options whichever possible, to make a deal happen. I don't know if it was special on those liquidation sale's duration or they do everyday, but the variety of payment options was really helpful for me to make a finally go with them. Another reason for 4 stars. I compared with all other 'official' Yamaha dealership around San Jose, and honestly we don't have many choices, probably lesser than car dealership. But still I had a choice other than Greene, but I parked on Greene, because we "thought" they offered best prices and payment options (again, I'm not sure if it was special on those sales duration or not). After 7 months, I see my daughter enjoys new 'GRAND' piano everyday, and after all, It was a little stretch for me to buy C3, but I feel that it was a right choice to buy C3 following Greene salesperson's advice (than initial thought that we could go little down) Finally, Greene might be not the best, but I think they offer good services, best possible options in the bay area.
