My daughter has been learning violin with Teacher Luis for 1.5 years. Teacher Luis is great. He taught very well and laid a solid foundation for my daughter. He is very patient, didn't put too much pressure on students, which is very important for my daughter as a beginner. Communications are smoothly, too. We have been a long term customer to Opus 1, multiple lessons subscriptions for two kids. Spent loads of money with the studio. Have had great experiences with the admins who have been there for a long time, and some of the teachers, but also terrible customer service with the new staff and other teachers. The school has been expanding too fast and lose sight of the music education and what matters for kids and parents when we pursue music education. Very very disappointed!!! read more

My son is taking violin lessons with Opus 1. He's played before, we wanted another private teacher but it seems most teachers are affiliated with a music school. So far it's been good, we have tried a few teachers and they all seem qualified, with different techniques. Scheduling lessons and makeups has been easy and the staff at all locations seem very nice and helpful. The teachers can be booked back to back but they keep track of time, so you aren't in a situation where the student before runs way over. Lots of availability for scheduling makeups, particularly if you can use a different teacher. Billing is fine, nice interface. There's some stuff other reviews cite that I want to correct though. The makeup policy lets you hold 2 makeup classes, not 3. Maybe that changed recently. Also, it's 2 recitals per year, the others either you pay or need to be chosen. Finally, the one thing that irks me a bit is 2 of our 3 cancellations were because of the teacher and on short notice (this is all recent). Lastly, I think some of the teachers are better geared towards young kids, you'll need to try them out to find out. Others are fine with kids and likely fine with people who already know how to play, but it's not like mommy/me music time type of personality. read more

Opus 1 Music Studio is an excellent music studio. Both my kids started at this studio in 2018. They participated in two years of Music for Young Children (Sunshine and Sunbeams) with Teacher Yuri. Yuri is fantastic--very organized and very cheerful. MYC was a great introduction to musical concepts (solfege, note values and rhythm, note names and piano geography, dynamics, recognizing skips/steps/standing still, etc) and provided a really good foundation for when my kids continued with private lessons. I highly recommend the MYC series. My kids continued with private lessons starting in 2020 during the pandemic--we started with online lessons and have continued online ever since. The only area of improvement I can suggest is if they can find a way to improve the internet bandwidth because sometimes the connection is choppy. The online lessons are so convenient that we haven't gone back to the studio even though it's an option. So far, my kids have had two fantastic private lesson teachers. We started with Ava initially and then switched to Effie due to scheduling reasons. We've been with Effie for about 9 months--she's very capable, organized, extremely responsive to messages, and very receptive to input. Effie has also spent extra time creating piano arrangements at the appropriate level for pop songs my kids wanted to play--that is a testament to her dedication. The studio does a great job with organizing recitals and the holiday party. The online portal is easy to use to communicate with the teacher. The admin staff is extremely responsive and quickly addresses concerns raised. They also have a great makeup policy and summer hold policy. I am an adult student and have been taking voice lessons with teacher Anne for over a year. She is a fantastic teacher, who has helped so much on my singing skills, including performing to an audience as well as passing Certificate of Merit (CM) exams. Anne is highly responsible and observant to help her students perfecting every detail including breathing, pronunciation, and tonation. The best part is that she does that in the most encouraging, friendly and passionate way, which is critical for building my confidence and keeping my motivation as a student. Since I started, I have performed 3 times in recitals and in a holiday party (all free from Opus 1), learnt numerous songs in various languages, and took a CM exam with good results. I look forward to my next recital coming up this week, where I will be singing 2 songs, including an Italian song (Sebben Crudele). I really appreciate Anne's help and couldn't have come along this far in singing without her. I recommend taking her lessons for anyone, at any age and skill level. read more

Opus 1 Music Studio is a place that offers a wide range of programs that can accompany your child on their musical journey from infancy to adulthood. They have demo and trial classes available for you to first see if the program you are interested in is right for you or your child. Their classes range from Music Together, which accepts children in infancy, to private lessons for the youngest beginners to the mature master-level. The classrooms are tidy and well equipped. There is also a large room with a grand piano for virtuoso-level lessons or group classes. There are 2 locations, one in Mountain View and one in Palo Alto. For private lessons, missed classes are issued make-up passes that may be used at either location. The make-up passes are valid for 1 year, so it allows for a lot of flexibility. There is a wide range of teachers available to choose from for each level of expertise ranging from Standard Level I to Master Level III. There is no required commitment to stick with one teacher. Students are allowed to switch to another teacher at any time (pending scheduling). There is a playroom in the back with WiFi for parents to work or young siblings to play. Many of the teachers have experience in teaching students from a young age. My 4 year old did not feel intimidated at all during her trial lesson. Due to scheduling, we were later assigned to another teacher (Dana) whom she absolutely adores and now is really motivated to practice well each week for. Teacher Dana is so patient and friendly and has really helped her to progress quickly. The studio also offers recital opportunities 3 times a year. My 4 year old was apprehensive at first to perform in her first recital. However, after the initial experience, she gained a lot of confidence and pride in herself and now enjoys practicing daily, without any nagging! By far the best music school we tried in the Mountain View and Palo Alto Area. Our kids had trial lessons with Teacher Aaron (Piano) and Luis (Violin) and both loved the lessons. We signed up for weekly lessons and been pleased since. We are very happy with their progress. Both teachers are extremely experienced, patient, encouraging and effective. We have the flexibility to join our lessons online or in-person at anytime. The admin staff and facilities are great and this is the only school that lets us cancel lessons and reschedule almost without any limit. Most private teachers and schools usually have extremely stringent cancellation policies. But Opus 1 lets us cancel and reschedule lessons online very easily with their online portal, which is super convenient given our busy schedule! Teachers also leave detailed notes and homework instruction after each lesson which is also very useful for my wife and I to know how the kids are progressing what they are supposed to work on next. I have been taking vocal classes with Antoinette for a couple months now and she's been amazing to work with! I love her teaching style and we have great chemistry together that only encourages me to get better with each session. I didn't really know what I was getting into but she made everything really easy & natural to follow. I really respect her work because she understands the emotional influences that activate while singing. I already had some experience with voice since I was in choir in high school and have been singing my whole life basically, but she really helped me understand subtle nuances that you can only get from someone who has come to understand your voice. This review is for the Opus Discovery Summer Camp full week session. My child thoroughly enjoyed this 1 week session. The teachers Yuri and Dana were excellent session leaders - fun and engaging. What we liked is they were able to bring in a variety of music guests and cover different aspects of music that my child would not have had exposure to. Like history, different instruments, vocal, general theory and understanding of parts of the orchestra and such. The value of this camp is excellent. (Note I am very picky about summer camps). For the attention, detail, knowledge and number of kids I would highly recommend this program. I don't know where else you could experience this in a small group setting. read more

It's been a year since we joined Opus 1 and it's been such a great experience. We been doing Voice with teacher Annie and piano with teacher Marco. The teachers are great, patient, and friendly. They make learning music fun. The teachers at Opus 1 are great and experienced but I should mention that the staffs make it an even better place. They've been very helpful accommodating my needs. This applies especially to Mei. If I need to change/reschedule classes, she helps finding the most convenient day and time within a second. She is also great at finding a compatible teacher for students. Her communication skills and her friendliness makes this place a great place to learn music. Registering classes online is super easy; Someone always answers the phone when I call. End of the year recital is a nice opportunity to perform in front of very supportive crowd. read more

Greedy greedy greedy! I'll start with the good. My teacher was great. Now for the bad. This is a money making scheme. They will not treat you like an adult. They will charge you $400 a month whether you have lessons or not! It's a flat fee not for lesson. You're an adult and we're called in to work? No refund! They are closed because it is a holiday? No refund! Your teacher has to cancel? No refund! In my case there is only one day a week both me and the instructor can meet as I do shift work. For the record the lesson is for me, a 30 year old adult. You can end up paying 400 for one lesson in December because of Christmas! Think you will save money for cancelling for a month? Nope! 50 dollar initiation fee. Your are not a college. Your are a private studio. read more

The best thing about this music studio is Antoinette. My daughter has been taking voice lessons from her for a few years now and she absolutely loves it. Antoinette is much more than a teacher - she is inspiring, warm, encouraging, constructive, almost therapeutic. The studio itself has very strict pricing policies that I'm not crazy about (for example, you can only have 2 makeup lessons at a time. If you cancel a class, you cannot schedule a make up lesson unless you have already used your 2 pre-existing make up lessons. In general their pricing policies are unnecessarily rigid, though they have improved their policy a bit over the past year. We LOVE the Music for Young Children program here taught by Teacher Irina. I've heard the the owner, Doris, is also an amazing teacher. We had another woman for a MYC course here who was not as terrific, but overall, wow. We tried piano lessons at several places and this is the only program that kept my daughter's interest. The kids play the piano then sing then put stickers on a sheet, then dance around and all the while they are learning a ton about music--reading it, theory, and playing the piano. As the owner, Doris, said, the program is spunky enough that kids never get bored in class--which is a revelation to me. As a kid I thought that piano HAD to be boring. :) In any case, my daughter loves the piano and I owe Opus 1 a lot of thanks for that! read more

We liked Teach Marco a lot. He is definitely good with young kids. But the studio has really rigid rules such as must attend 8 classes per month to maintain your status as active. Otherwise you'd re-register and pay the fee again. Recently they raised registration fee. I just got a feeling they are too much after money. I mean, who isn't ?! My son and daughter are both taking Piano lessons with teacher Mark. He comes to our house in the evening for the lessons and the experience has been wonderful. He is a very caring, calm and dedicated teacher. His ability to adapt his teaching style to each of my children has been key in making these sessions a success. He knows how to motivate both of them and find pieces that will be fun/interesting for them. He also teaches a good balance of music theory, technique and musicality. I took guitar lessons with Vincent from Opus 1 studio a while back . Vincent was a great teacher with an open mind. He always answered my questions with patience and helped me reach my goal with the guitar. The staffs at the studio are also warm and responsive. What I like the most is the environment of the studio as it is always very clean and comfortable. Sometimes I see little kids coming in and out of the studio and they seem very happy and content with their lessons. The studio is also located at a convenient location next to supermarkets, salons ,the dry cleaners and many more. I can easily get my errands done before or after classes. Unfortunately , I had to terminate my lessons due to tight schedule . However, I will definitely recommend this studio to anyone interested in taking music lessons! read more

WAY TOO OVERPRICED and ridiculous attitude!! Compared to other reputable music schools such as CSMA in Mt. View, this little place is sooo overpriced! A class for young kids costs exactly TWICE as much as CSMA. Even though the Opus class is 10 minutes shorter. Melody Music, Veklser much cheaper too and I have had great experiences in these other schools. I asked the lady on the phone why are they pricey and she gave some vague answers about their teachers being accredited/trained or something. Really? Then I asked her if I could pop in for 5 minutes to check out a class before I sign up. She said "No, I could only see from the window!! WTH?? I said I would come without my kid and just quietly observe from the back. Again, the answer was NO!! I asked why. The lady said "it is not fair to other parents." I asked what do you mean? She said "because class already started two weeks ago and those parents are already in there." And I said, "so you mean there is no room in there for another person in the back? And she said yes, that is right. Ummm...okay.... I guess they don't want new students! Too bad, we would have take a lot of classes here as my kid loves music IF ONLY they had allowed me to pop in for 5 minutes. Great business practice. Thanks, but NO Thanks!! - TWICE as expensive as other places. - They have a regular fee and on top they tack on a HUGE reg fee AND a materials fee. - Small, crowded studio - No customer service - By their own admission, classes are so packed, that they can't even fit one more body in the room!! read more

We've been going to Opus 1 since they were 3 for group classes, eventually started private lessons with various teachers before finding a perfect match with Teacher Mark a few years ago. I have taken classes for both piano and violin, with Teachers Doris and Leah in Piano, and Teacher Richard in Violin. Teachers at Opus 1 are so professional and helpful to students, and instead of being punishing towards students who need improvement, they provide support and encouragement for those who strongly need it.
