We stopped here on a whim after seeing signs on the interstate. The food is really good. My husband said it was the best brisket he'd ever tasted. I got the pulled pork sandwich and I didn't even put any sauce on it. This is a big deal for me--I'm usually a I'll-have-a-little-meat-with-my-sauce type of BBQ eater. But the pulled pork was so perfect that the sauce was a complete afterthought and by the time I did think of it, my meat was gone! My daughter got the ribs kids' meal and those too were excellent. The sweet tea is great as well. My toddler son screamed for more green beans. Honestly 5 stars for food. What is lacking is organization and communication. The host took a while to find a table for us and when he brought us over, it was dirty, and we awkwardly stood there while he slowly thought about what he should do. He tried to take us back to the host stand and figure out a new plan, but another server stepped in and cleaned the table for us, while we got our own high chair. Sonny's BBQ is nostalgic for my wife and I. She used to work there. My family would go here growing up. Over the years, Sonny's quality has declined, even though we keep on going, it always seems to disappoint. The service was friendly and welcoming. No complaints there. I got the two meat platter, chicken tenders and sliced brisket. My wife got a pulled pork lunch with extra crispy fries. My dad wanted baby back ribs. At first they said yes. Then they said no. Then they came back and said they found some. The food didn't take long. None of it seemed fresh though. The brisket was dry and grey looking. The chicken tenders were decent. Well sauced. My wife's pulled pork looked like it was scraped off the bottom of the container that had been sitting on the warmer all day. The bottom side was a large piece of dry, hard sauce and meat that was not edible. My mom had that in hers too. The fries my wife ordered extra crispy were not very crispy at all. That order was clearly ignored. My dad was looking forward to his baby backs but in the end wished they had been sold out. Maybe the St. Louis style ribs would have been better. The last rack of ribs that they happened to dig out of the back of the warmer were not quality. We will be sticking with other restaurants to satisfy our bbq cravings next time. read more

Probably the last time I visit this location. Throughout 2024, each order I ordered online for pick up was incomplete. For whatever reason almost every staff member doesn't know how to operate their online orders which leads to many mistakes. I had to contact corporate for my incomplete 3 meat pick up order, as well as missing items from the Prime Rib sandwich combo. Called 4 times for them to make the adjustment for the missing items due to the 2 meat and 3 meat cost being a significant difference in price. Ordered a rack of ribs with the 3 meat selection so there's no confusion. Overall I'm done with this location. read more

Called for a very large order for delivery, it was complete and fresh, temperatures correct across all items. Delicious barbecue, great salads, all sides to go with the entrees. Look for Sonny's to have a high standard...in store or for pickup/ delivery, always enjoyable. Fed 10 people at a reasonable price, plenty of food for everyone, + leftovers! This place has been around for ages... I say that as I celebrate my college reunion!! Same slow-cooked meats and just like I age and get wiser over the years so did they. The location is nice and with beers on tap for a great compliment (unlike what I had before). The smell of smokin' meats is in the air and the food delivered even during the last 30 mins before closing which is not common for a lot of bbq places. We sat at the bar...the server & staff treated us like we had 2 hours before closing. If anything, we felt more like VIPs as we got a lot of attention. We were easy so I went with the Pick of the Pit Combo that included Ribs & Brisket as the main served with mac & cheese and a salad. The Salad was my way of having some greens after a long party weekend & it was sized just right. Ribs & Brisket were still good at the end of the day and I only reached for the signature sauces to reminisce. Everyone has different expectations when it comes to how you BBQ (dry vs wet, etc...). I expect a championship BBQ to have a good brisket especially when they sell it at a Market Price on the menu. I had it and it was dry and didn't have much smoke. The sauces make it good. The Smoked Wings are excellent, so I give the Wings a 5 and the Brisket a 2. Friendly service makes it a solid 4. I think I just got the brisket on a bad day. I ordered sweet BBQ sauce and my sandwich was dry. No sauce and none in my bag. I had asked if there was some and she said yes. Sonny's has been a go to for many years. Before the pandemic this restaurant was a comfortable place to spend some time relaxing, eating bbq and drinking their delicious sweet tea. Since the pandemic began this has still been a popular choice for online ordering for curbside pickup (fail) and drive through (hit and miss). We never have a problem with the quality of the food but these folks just can't seem to get it right for takeout. We gave up on online ordering/curbside pickup early on after 2 frustrating experiences. You can see my tips for further explanation. Drive through has been hit and miss with a correct order sometimes and then an order that is either missing items ordered or incorrect items that were not what we ordered. I won't stop going here but I definitely emphasize that they need to double check the order at the window or I am going to sit there and check it before I leave. Their choice. I have decided to use the tips to document the results of each drive through experience because it is not a consistent experience. We will see what the results are. read more

Visited the Tallahassee FL Sonny's Barbecue location on September 1, 2024. We were seated by a hostess but even though we saw a couple of servers none acknowledged us nor took an order. We sat there waiting for a good bit. Then a larger party was sealed at the table next to us. When the server finally came out, she did not acknowledge us and went straight to the other table. We stood up, tapped her on the shoulder and told her we've been sitting there long before the other people and were leaving. It was ridiculous and unacceptable. read more

Sonny's is always a safe bet for us when traveling. Today was no exception. TABITHA was an exceptional server. She was on her game, providing excellent service. She checked on us enough to make sure we had everything we wanted yet not so much to be a pain. The kitchen was faster than a fast food restaurant. We were in Tally for the afternoon and had a hankering for bbq. 4 Rivers is closed on Sunday so we decided on Sonny's. Been to various Sonny's in the Tallahassee area a half dozen times over the past 3-4 years with mixed results. Their dry rub ribs are usually terrific. Wife ordered half rack with bbq beans, slaw and cornbread muffin. I ordered combo ribs and brisket, green beans and slaw, corn muffin too. Best part of both meals was the cole slaw! The PITMASTER must have taken the day off. The ribs were terrible - undercooked and tough vs falling off the bone. Tough membrane on the underside was never peeled off. The brisket was dry dry dry. Under smoked. Maybe a leftover, thin sliced a day later. Corn muffins - dried out. One was burnt on the bottom. We had to ask for flatware and were given plastic fork/knife while other patrons received stainless utensils in brown paper wrapping. If there was a manager on duty, there was a total lack of detail. Sorry Sonny's - you're off our list of places to dine. read more

First time eating from Sonny's because I'm just visiting Tallahassee. Ordered take out and the food wasn't bad at all. Ribs were pretty good, garlic bread was okay, mac and cheese was okay, chicken wings were not good and really fatty, baked beans were pretty good, tater tots were crispy and fresh (even after driving 15 minutes away), the banana pudding was good, and the food came out relatively quick considering I had a big order. The only reason I give 4 stars and not 5 was because my dad (the person who placed the order) said it took a while for someone to actually take his order and because the food was good but not out of this world. I would probably come back here while I stay in Tallahassee. I don't understand all the bad reviews, but at the same time I can't speak for the cleanliness or the service because I didn't come into contact with any workers. read more

I came back here after 14 years and couldn't wait for Sonny's BBQ well I was shocked and disappointed as the N. Monroe location was empty almost, the meat was different, the corn nuggets were a cheaper kind and we were brought enough powder sugar which we didn't request to cause tooth decay. Sonny's disappoints yet again. Fifth fail. Last time it was possible food poisoning for 3 of the 4 people in our group at the Dick Wilson Blvd location, then the skimpy meat with nothing but burnt ends (which I don't mind if it's not on a sandwich at the N Monroe location and and now the kiddie sized drinks at the N Monroe location. What is the deal with Sonny's. It was our go to BBQ spot on the road because it's normally good service and well portioned sizes but this is ridiculous. Tallahassee accounts for 3 of the fails and Panama City Beach and Fort Walton Beach with one fail each. It actually says a lot for the Fort Walton location because we use to go to it at least twice a month when we were in town. We've never had issues at the locations in Valdosta or Pensacola. Normally not an issue but when I asked if they had the large to go cups I was told no yet five students were just served the larger size. Maybe they just ran out of the cups because they still have a large stack of large lids. I hope they don't do the same thing with my meal as my previous visit and skimp on the meat. Really don't want to experience the "where's the beef" moment from the 80's Wendy's commercial. May have to write off Sonny's if this is the new standard I can come to expect. Tallahassee has a vast array of interesting eateries to settle for substandard experience at one of my favorite chain restaurants. On a positive note. The remodel is still looking fresh after two years of use, albeit one of the years it was more or less shuttered or operating a a very low volume due to COVID-19 . It's clean and running at about 40% capacity. That's better than their TVs as only 25% showed anything. Your choice of football or futbol don't know which teams since both screens were behind the bar all the other screens were black or displayed "one moment please" the entire meal. Here's the food. Better then last time but still does not meet FWB and Pensacola standards. Light of the pork but at least not as light as my daughter's pulled pork portion, maybe they just put part of her portion on her brother's because his appeared normal. My wife had a bake potato for a side but Sonny's also apparently ran out of sour cream. But she's a trooper and seasoned it with salt and pepper with a side of butter. Her whole hog was well portioned. Oh wait, guess the result truck just rolled in because a server was carrying at least 3 sleeves of cups and the family diagonal to our table was provided the normal sized to go cups. So much for service and honesty because unless the cups were airdropped, teleported or delivered by UAV, it was available from the start. read more

We picked up catering for ten people on July 4th at the Timberlane location. It was busy and the people kept coming in to pick up food. Sonny's had it together. The food was hot and delicious. It was more than enough food for our group. The chicken was fall of the bone tender and the macaroni and cheese creamy and tasty. They were awesome! read more
