This is a long time local place that has the best chicken sandwich. It isn't fast food because everything is cooked when you place your order. Today was for takeout. Chicken sandwich with fried okra, two piece white with Mack and cheese and baked beans. I also ordered 5 biscuits for good measure. Stars for the chicken. It was done perfectly. The biscuits were good and the gravy on the instant mashed potatoes was very good. The Mac and cheese - no. Baked beans - from a can and not doctored up like the ones that I make. Bottom line: If you're in TLH, and you're seeking out unique-to-TLH restaurants that span the gamut, then any of the Lindy's (Orange Ave., Lafayette, N. Monroe are the only one's I know personally) fit the bill. I have been to the Southwood Lindy's - but it's more upscale and the very nature of an upscale Lindy's is a minor affront to my inner proletarian. You BET Lindy's is getting a whoppin' five-star rating from this guy. As Art S. so eloquently stated in his review methodology, ratings need to occur stacked next to their comparables. (Comps). And Comps in TLH, in my opinion, are ALWAYS also in TLH. It is ok to cite "how things are back in the big city" - but folks, do it sparingly. TLH reviews are geared towards folks who are presumably looking for best-in-TLH options... (ok, enough of the soap box). Five stars in class (Class being 1. TLH, 2. Locally Owned, 3. Iconic Fried Chicken Outlet, 4, Exceptional Gizzards/Livers (yes, a subset, but an important one) and 5. Locally renowned. There ARE good chicken outlets elsewhere in town. 'Fact, one happened to open up two doors down from me on Park Ave. But Lindy's is a part of the TLH experience, whereas no matter how "delectable" any fast-casual / QSV outlet is in town, the experience you receive generally mimics the one in Tacoma, Tempe, Tillamook, Topeka or Tucson. But the thing is, we're in Tallahassee - so why not enjoy an experience you simply can't get outside of Tallahassee? - That experience is Lindy's. (when you're off jet-settin' to Houston on that Continental TLH-IAH direct, knock yourself out with one of the fast-casuals over there!) Why is Lindy's so good? 1. Livers/Gizzards fresh at 11:30 every day. The good stuff. I'm talkin' just like the country store gas stations in the surrounding north florida counties. (even that one country-esque "city-slicker" gas station at the trecherous intersection of Old Bainbridge and Tharpe...) 2. Chicken Salad. It's from Lindy's, so, as can be imagined, it's sourced from Fried Chickens. Can't extend this out to parallel the Portlandia skit concerning actual Poulet Pedigree, but I've stretched it to the point where I can reference the skit so that if you're unfamiliar with it, you - in turn, can check out both Portlandia and the particular skit involving sourced locally-raised chickens). 3. Chicken Filet Sandwich. I'm not, by any means, knocking the Chicken Filet (spelled incorrectly) sandwich available at an other outlet, or similar chicken sandwiches sold at innumerable franchise outlets across the land. Instead, I'm merely putting this one up on a well-deserved Corinthian pedestal as an example after which all other similarly intentioned sandwiches can model themselves. It's remarkably good. Remarkably good. 4. The Pork Chop Sammich. As the name implies, it's a sandwich, with a pork chop in it. (Yes, bone-on). 5. Decor. Old-school, diner, naugahyde, cheapie panelling, low ceilings, all the charm that yesteryear extended to our previous generations. Looking for a time-machine to transport you to a period when social activitism REALLY was social activism, and not the lazy, sloth-like whining of 2016? This is the sort of decor you can imagine in the 60's and early 70's. I'm not saying this would have been found in Paris, '68 - but definitely you could have seen these interiors all throughout our own civil strife of the mid+ years of the 20th century. This place, while not as popular as Chick-fil-A on the National scene, has one of the better chicken fillet sandwhiches in the area. Their standard fillet sandwhich is served on normal white buns with pickles and mayonnaise. These are merely delightful distractions to the entire chicken fillet. The chicken fillet is both larger and more affordable than Chic-fil-A. It is moist and fell apart in my mouth with little effort. This location on Lafayette Street is convenient to work but I hardly go there. Hubby had 2 piece lunch with fries and a biscuit. The chicken was gloriously done! It was so fresh from the grease hot that it took a while to cool enough for the hungry man to dig in. The fries are crinkle cut and probably prepared in the same oil, which he loved. The biscuit looked great but he said "it's ok". On the grand recommendation of the young lady behind the counter, I ordered a number 1 combo - a filet chicken breast sandwich with your choice of side and a drink. I had a previous review that was overly harsh, based on numerous experiences I had at the many Lindy's in town. Previously, I experienced bones in my chicken sandwich, chicken salad, undercooked chicken, unclean bathrooms, tables, floors, etc. For whatever reason, this one did a little bit of remodeling and a major clean, which I'm grateful for. There is no chicken filet sandwich on Earth to top Lindy's. Yes, their counter help can sometimes be surly and maybe there is a little grime in the corners, but who cares when angels kiss your tastebuds with every bite? The sides run from decent (mashed taters) to excellent (fried okra). The gravy is thick and chickeny and you should get a few biscuits and douse them in it. The fried livers are very good, but you have to get there early to get them sometimes. But all that pales in comparison to the fried filet sandwich. Food is ok, but not the best. I like that it is a small business chain and it is a well known location. That being said, it doesn't look like they have painted, updated and in spots cleaned since opening a long time ago. Tables uncleaned, floors...don't look down! I rarely if ever come to Tallahassee but this time around I noticed a place while leaving the airport area called Lindy's. Since I have a 3-4 time per year weakness for fried chicken, I knew I had to at least check this out, especially since I was on my own for lunch and dinner and that meant no consensus building from my team. Checked out Yelp and found out they have 5 locations in Tally, and this one was a half mile from our office where I parked myself until my mid afternoon meeting. I was wearing a suit and tie, but knew that I probably didn't need the jacket and certainly the tie was going to get in the way as well. At lunch, they had a very good crowd but got a parking spot and ordered a half fried chicken meal (figured may as well go for the gusto) with two sides where i chose corn nuggets and mashed potatoes. The meal comes fast. This is definitely not fine dining and I am sure people were wondering who this guy is in the dress clothes but no issues at all. The chicken was very good. The corn nuggets were something I wouldn't order again although they tasted good it would have been smarter to get green beans or something else not fried. It got to be a bit much. I actually saw the fries and they looked great so the reader may want to just order them. The mashed potatoes were very small, and drowned in gravy but tasted fine. Bottom line is that this place is good for what it is. It is quick southern fried chicken that tasted great. Don't let the exterior and interior of this small chicken place fool you. While it is extremely dated by modern standards, that doesn't mean the food quality suffers. This was my first time trying Lindy's and I can say I wasn't disappointed. They have various chicken items to choose from and range from individual meals to box meals that serve a family. They also have a board of specials next to the cash register when you walk in that have a number of good deals if you want a quick meal. I chose the 5 piece hot wing meal with fries and a drink. The total came out to just under $9 and I had plenty of food. The hot wings were honestly some of the best I have had and it's all thanks to very tender chicken and the awesome sauce they use. I would have honestly asked to buy some to take with me but I am only staying in Tallahassee on business and don't have room in my bag lol Apparently Lindy's is a long standing establishment, serving since 1968. Best chicken in town. Worst customer service in town. Food alone cannot carry a restaurant. The staff is always rude. They empty trash cans and clean while you're telling them your order. I went in to order about 8:15 p.m. The woman in charge locked the door at 8:30 even though the sign outside said open til 9. And the place was filthy. I should have take a clue from that. The orders were not ready when we arrived to pick them up and the employee was very rude about it. When we got the food back to the office there were quite a few things wrong: various orders were charged for sauces and sides that were not in the bags, the food was overcooked in one order, the fries were half-frozen in another, and in a "3 piece tender meal" they put two tenders and one cold chicken wing!
