We went to the counter to order and no one was there, a young man got out of a booth and came to take our order. The cook poked her head out after we paid and said they didn't have anything to make the Philly. So my wife ordered the bacon cheeseburger. We sat and waited as what we can only assume were regular customers left. Then it was just us and the young man and his female companion sitting in booths. One customer walked behind the counter and chatted up the cook for a good 10 minutes, all the while we are waiting for our order. Finally I got up and walked to the counter as the customer left and the cook scurried back into the kitchen. The young man got up from his booth and asked me what I wanted to order. I had to tell him that I was still awaiting my order. He went back into the kitchen and brought out the plates that obviously had been ready and sitting there. The burgers were not tasty and they were slightly on the cold side from sitting around. The fries were inedible, lacking flavor. Even salt didn't help those greasy planks of old potato. This place really needs an overhaul. I shuddder to think of the cleanliness issues that may be lurking in the kitchen. This place may have been great in a time gone by, but today you should just pass on by.

Our ribeye was amazing, marinated in spices and cooked to perfection. We chose the two included sides and ours were a loaded baked potato and string beans. Because we shared the 12 Oz steak, we added a side and chose grilled zucchini. All were grilled in real butter, except of course, the potato. And even though our amazing, cheerful server, Joey, assured us real butter in the grilling, the loaded potato's condiments were real sour cream, real bacon bits, chives and for some mysterious reason little butter/looking tubs of dreaded "vegetable" oil. When we mentioned this to Joey, she shared our surprise and immediately offered to replace the whole side, which we declined, simply scraping off the fluffy yellow, heart-damaging, pretend oil. Joey even checked with the chef before we had to ask about dessert options and was happy to report safe choices were all butter coconut cake and vanilla ice cream. We're not trying to be difficult, just healthy. And with servers like Joey, there's hope that people are becoming aware. In any case, with the exceptions mentioned, a good steakhouse like Mesquite Canyon is always a good bet for the health conscious. The restaurant isn't fancy, has a sunny back area for dining away from the darker bar area, and even offers some tasty local beer.

I am 61 years old and I remember my Dad used to take me here for my birthday, like 8-12 years old. He worked for Cabot in Pampa then JM Huber in Borger and then we got transferred to Houston - wow, what a change. Anyway, there used to be a Putt-Putt next door that we would go to as well on my birthday. I even have a piece of a shingle I picked up for some reason, that had blown off the roof of the place where you get your putter and ball.
