There are only two reasons why you'd ever need to drive on Highway 118. The first is to avoid traffic on the 101 during rush hour. The second is the Somis Nut House. I'm still trying to decide which reason is better. If you like peanuts, you will like this establishment. It's impossible for you to not to. They've got all kinds. Regular peanuts? Yes. Honey-roasted peanuts? Yes. Butter toffee peanuts? Yes. Chocolate-covered peanuts? Yes. (Charile Brown? Sadly, no.) They've also cashews and almonds and pistachios and walnuts and all other types of snack-nut you can imagine. On top of that, they've also got the honey roasted/butter toffee/chocolate covered variants of everything. Have you had honey roasted cashews recently? For heaven's sake, why not? I like the Nut House because they also have dried fruit, chocolate liquors, jawbreakers, and other traditional candy. Everything comes in hand-packed clear bags, and because it seems as if they deal with everything in bulk before bagging it up, the prices are more than reasonable. When I leave it's always with an armful of goodies that can last me a while, and I never get the sense that I'm overspending. Still, you'll want to be careful; there's so much variety that you'll find something different that you want to try (chocolate-covered banana chips? mmmmm....) which could lead you to spending a few extra bucks than you maybe would have liked to. If you have a peanut allergy, you're going to have to deal with the traffic on the 101. (It beats dying. Barely.) For everyone else, prepare to get that kid-in-a-candy-store feeling should you decide to check out the Nut House. Except, it would be more like a kid-in-a-nut-house feeling, because...yeah. read more

I received a gift box of mixed nuts from the Somis Nut House for Christmas. The pistachios were amazingly tasty, so much I decided to drive to Somis and buy some more. The nice lady showed my the exact pistachios that were inside the gift boxes. They will not let you sample? Why? I bought two of the large bags and some cashews and drove home. I opened the bag and much to my surprise they are old and tasteless. Nothing like the gift box, and they were expensive. I called the nice lady and told her about the low quality nuts, and she said they all come from the same 50lbs barrel? She had no explanation? If I could've sampled before I bought I would've left the store. I could buy that quality of pistachio at a grocery store. Did anyone ever think to sample all the levels of the barrel instead of the top? A grower very well could place the good quality pistachios on the bottom and better ones on the top? Who would know? A good way to get rid of old stock? The store is very nice inside, but I feel I've been baited and switched. I will not be going back. Sorry. read more

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. The selection of items here is to die for. And it's automatic 5 stars from me because they have chocolate covered honeycomb, my absolute favorite. Keep an eye out when you're on the road, you'll miss it if you blink. The building is like an little old shack/barn. They have the most amazing selection, a veritable cornucopia of dried fruits, nuts, and candy you could ever find in one location. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. They have brittles, barks, haystacks, various chocolate covered nuts, toffee, jordan almonds (another favorite), cordials, bonbons. For dried fruits: They have chile mango, chile pineapple, apricots, apple rings, blueberries, cranberried, figs, papaya, pears, peaches, citrus peels, crystallized ginger, etc. Some of the fruits also have low sugar or unsulfered versions. For nuts: almonds, cashews, peanuts, pecans, etc. With some roasted or raw, almond meal, and also nut butters, and seeds. And then there are trail mixes, pretzels, peanut butter cups. Staff always seems uptight and the product isn't even very good. It seems that most people are buying gifts from there and maybe not realizing the quality in a lot of the product is lacking. I drive thru on my way to moorpark several times a week. I stopped by weekly until I realized Amazon is cheaper and better. A super old favorite of mine. Worth the trek from Ventura or stop into for any reason if I'm ever on the 118. The locale is this rustic old barn/warehouse building and it's still surrounded by agricultural fields. This place has been open FOREVA! And by forever I mean since the 1950s sometime. I LOVE LOVE LOVE all their candies, nuts, dried fruits and goodies, particularly their chocolate covered honey comb and their mixed nuts. Their nut/dried fruit baskets and platters are always great gifts as well! If you are nuts about nuts and have a big sweet tooth,boy is this the place for you! If you're ever tooling through the back roads into Ventura, keep an eye out for the Somis Nut House. Blink and you'll miss it. The building looks like a busted up ol' shack from the road, but once you open those white-washed double doors, you'll find yourself in nut heaven. They have table after table of delicious, nutty treats. I've never gotten out of the place without spending at least forty bucks. This time around, we got some milk chocolate haystacks, cashew brittle, raw almonds, raw cashews, flax seed, sesame seed, sunflower seeds (GF is into making homemade granola) and a bunch of other goodies. This is a sporadic weekend day: Wife: "We're going to the Camarillo outlet shops today." Me: "OK." The place is super nondescript on a two-lane highway among farms and produce stands. Just a wood shack basically and you walk in it's just a room with tables and nuts. I've been visiting here since I was a kid. It is the coolest thing ever. There's not much you can add to what everyone else has said about the huge variety of nuts, candy and other goodies you can get here. Just go and be amazed. And try a jar of the local honey. The avocado is good. Favorite things: the sesame sticks (huge bag for 2.99), almonds of every flavor and consistency (raw, roasted, salted, barbecue, smokehouse, honey, slivered, almond butter, etc. etc.), various kinds of trail mix, butter toffee peanuts. They also have old-fashioned candies (root beer barrels, lemon drops, walnettos), taffy, various nut brittles, and lots of chocolate treats. Great place has nuts in bulk and as we were checking out the guy behind the counter questioned me what I was going to do with all those Pistachio's and I told him. He then gave me a lesson about raw and lightly toasted (I was buying the raw) . Turns out raw was to raw for me and I switched to lightly salted and toasted. Marilyn H. and Company, I'm glad others have found and love this little shack. The fact that it's an old ramshackle place along the dusty, rural Hwy. 126, are part of its charms in my book. And they've got so much, and such a variety. There's an old placard with a squirrel behind the counter that reads, "Welcome to the nut house." I tried to buy it from the proprietors, but they wouldn't part with it, saying that it was one of a kind. Among my purchases was the mango taffy I'd bring home to my mother. I used to stop here on my way home from weekends at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and miss it (and that stretch of Hwy 126) so much. It would be worth taking a trip up there again to get out of the city. A former supervisor (a shopaholic of the Westwood kind) asked me once, "Isn't that place soooo desolate?" I said, "Yes, if you miss Nordstrom's and Starbucks." She got the point, and never asked such a stupid, disdainful question again. read more

My family tradition for decades is to buy nuts each Xmas at the Nuthouse. Last year the owner was such a horrible grouchy grinch to my 87 year old mom that we discussed ending our tradition but went again this year and he was just as rude so our new tradition will be to look forward to his attitude and keep patronizing the Nuthouse- he just comes with the fun tradition. I had a great time stopping by the Somis Nut House today. They have an amazing selection of nuts and sweets. I appreciated the clear labeling on the packaging a family member cannot have salt. I also have nice memories stopping by here when my grandma visits from out of state. The prices are so-so. Pretty much to be expected but the pistachios are a bit high as I get a better deal at Whole Foods Market. Everything else I purchased was pretty comparable. I will definitely be back! Rude Rude Rude cashier!!! Don't know if he is related to the owner but I took my friend there, she was visiting from Michigan. We spent $59 on nuts and candy. I asked if they had samples and the cashier very rudely replied NO! When we called him on it, he tried to make excuses but it was too late. White Chocolate Clusters aren't good. Other candy was just ok but doesn't warrant a return visit. Especially with that kind of service. Don't recommend it. read more

I have stopped here many times in the past and bought a variety of packages of nuts. I sampled the peanuts, cashews, almonds and a couple of others. Recently I noticed that a couple of packages tasted funny and within a couple of hours of eating them I got sick. I chalked it off as coincidental until a few days later when I ate some more and I got sick AGAIN! The worst part was when I took some of the nuts back for a refund, the owner was argumentative and claimed I had eaten too many and giving me replacement nuts would cost him $12 (retail) I explained to him that I had spent hundreds of dollars in the past year buying nuts from his store but he wouldn't budge. Then to make it even worse, he starting to make personal remarks and loud talking me and finally challenged me to a fight after escorting out of the store!! He was going to physically assault me over $6 worth of nuts! He said that the store wasn't roasting or making the nut products themselves because everything came from wholesalers and he wasn't responsible. So, In other words, everything thats sold there was pretty much exactly like what you would buy in the grocery store. That was also disappointing.! So. Let's just say my experience at the Somis Nut House left much to be desired. But it's a great place to go to if you want to be disrespected and assaulted by a maniac. If you've heard about Somis Nut House but never gone, GO! It looks a little scary from the outside, but inside is great, they roast all the nuts there and you can tell when you taste how fresh and perfectly roasted they are, worth every penny. If you like chocolate then you will find a big selection of dipped chocolate anything, there is a retro candy section, when is the last time you have had a root beer barrel? They sell these great shipping boxes and you can shop around the store then package everything for shipping which happens to be my favorite part, especially this time of year. The owner is nice and chatty behind the counter and he has his old mascot a golden retriever to keep him company, this place is great. read more

This place has an excellent variety of foods and is adorable inside. All sorts of snacks anything your heart could ever want. The downside is that everything is in my opinion a little overpriced. The only things I not there to try myself and not as a gift were the popping corn which is delicious, the beef jerky which was decent, and the milk chocolate caramels. They were amazing. When I asked the gentleman who worked there where the nuts were from he said they were from all over. I asked if they were supposed to be any better quality compared to other nuts and he said he was not sure, they think they are pretty good.
