Cafe Rowan is hands-down my favorite brunch spot in Portland…read more The seating is limited, there's usually a line (be sure to put down your name on the list), and parking is limited so it can be a pain - but it's worth it every single time! They are centered around southern/seafood style menu. Their lobster roll is incredible, the oysters are always a treat, and the shrimp and grits are our go to! Their Bloody Marys come loaded and they have rotating coffee specials. You can even just pop in and grab a coffee to go like a neighborhood coffee shop! When I lived in SE, I came here at least once a month. Be sure to schedule a nap after your meal cause you're going to be so food happy it'll put you in a coma ;)

So, it's a shame I waited this long to try Cafe Rowan. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that they seat people as they arrive, give them menus, and then customers order at the counter. A small menu helps food arrive quickly, and both tables and parking spaces will turn over faster than other brunch places. Their namesake sandwich is a classic, with the fantastic addition of roasted blueberry jam. My wife was thrilled with Rowan's bowl option - which appeared to have a little of everything. Once you get inside, Cafe Rowan seems bigger than it does from driving past, and high ceilings make it bright and airy. All in all, things moved quickly, the food was terrific, and I'm more of a brunch fan than I ever was before.

Jen was a wonderful waitperson who understood my budget needs. I was torn between the…read moreBacon/Mushroom/Green onion scrambled eggs and the classic pancake, but I didn't want to get both because of the price (which, I admit, was a bit on the pricey side -- but what breakfast place isn't?) and she suggested omitting the sides for the scramble and adding a single pancake instead, which rounded out to the same price. The sides would have been $6.50 in total, same price as the pancake. The pancakes are, in fact, big enough. I got full on them both and enjoyed it! Again, shoutout to Jen. Very understanding and fun. Cappuccino was also nice.

So I can only imagine how busy it would be on a saturday or sunday morning. Food is fantastic. The bennie was listed as their most popular dish and I can see why. I don't typically get egg benedicts, but this has swayed me. The eggs were perfectly runny. Hashbrowns were crispy on the outside but nice and soft on the inside. I got it with the biscuit, and i will say, i think they were a little over done? they felt harder than I would expect. A standout that i was not expecting though was their home made hot sauce. You would expect their jam to be good, given the name; but their hot sauce is nothing to scoff at. An amazing blend of sweet and spicy, without it being overly sweet or spicy.

It's always the places you don't expect/ just stumble upon that charm you the best! I'm not familiar with this area of Portland so I'm glad I lucked out with this charming and moody cafe. I'm sad that I had to get it to go for the expo instead of staying longer, I much prefer darker and moodier/ cozy cafe ambience to the sterile "modern" cafes. This place felt like a warm hug. Especially once I took a sip of that hot 12oz oat milk hazelnut latte! The baristas were all really nice, too, and after I told her I was heading to the expo, she recommended a reptile shop over on division for me to visit sometime. Great vibes, everyone there including the customers and workers seemed in a good coffee morning mood! I really wish I lived closer to this cafe, but then I might get too addicted because it's so good!!

As I placed my order the options were in front of me along with food options. I settled down and got a latte with hazelnut and a bagel with cream cheese. I had looked in the back area to sit but I realized it was subtle outdoor seating. Kinda cute but I'm from Hawaii so I was honestly too cold. I underestimated the table I sat on, I assumed my binder was going to take up the entire space, but I actually had space for my food, coffee, binder and my laptop. While doing my homework there were other people getting things done along side parents planning their kids spring break. A lot of customers that came in seemed familiar and happy going inside and chatting with the two gals handling the bar. It felt like I was watching an episode of some sort of show for a second sort of like "how I met your mother. " Great vibes, nice workers, good and affordable coffee with affordable food, like, seriously affordable. I've seen bagels cost $7 where I'm from and that's without cream cheese. Haha.
