Update: We won't be back. Things are so hit or miss here in Portales. The recipe for the bowls changed and are no longer good like they used to be. Sat down and ordered food once and halfway through the meal we asked for refills and the waitress said "I was told to no longer serve you" and walked off. We approached and asked why, she said "it's not safe." Would not tell us anything else until we spoke to a manager who assured us the water was shut off due to city issues. No problem, but wtf waitress????? What a weird and unsettling interaction. Today I picked up drive through order. Realized they didn't put all the sauces in the bag that I paid extra for. I waited until the gal noticed me and let her know I was missing two, paid-for sauces. She rolled her eyes and said they're in the bag. I said no ma'am there should be 4 and there's only 2. She said fine and walked off, clearly saying something to her coworker about it. She came back to the window mouthing something and rolled her eyes again. Opened the window, said "here" and handed me the sauces and snapped the window shut. We were having good, consistent food and service here that we started frequenting at least once a week. I even celebrated my birthday here this year! After the drive through interaction I can say we are done and will not be back. Original review: Food is normally pretty great unless you order close to closing. I guess that's expected, but they could offer some sort of discount for the bottom barrel food? Idk. Anyways, when I dine in the service is always great. When I go through the drive through I always have to park and make sure my order is correct before leaving because 100% of the time I have ordered it is wrong when it is handed to me. Also, when you order on the app it steals your points if you say you want to use the points and then decide later not to. When I told the staff that it stole 1200 points they just shrugged and told me they don't control the app. Pretty annoying. read more

I have not had good food here for awhile now. Off and on through the years I've had hit or miss with this place. One time I had part of a plastic lid on my food then got food poisoning several times. Tried it again tonight and ordered through their mobile app and they got my order wrong. Ordered a shrimp and chicken bowl with no cabbage or carrots. It had cabbage and carrots...... Just dealt with it and started to eat. And it just tastes so bland and just off. It's a small town so inevitably I will probably eat here again, but not after exhausting all my other options first. read more

Honestly don't even try to go inside. The owners moved to Lubbock and this location has gone way way down hill. The customer service is absolutely terrible. I have waited in the lobby for 10 minutes without anyone even coming out. The online ordering use to be the best in town. Just be prepared to wait 40 minutes for your order. Today we had something left off so I drove back to get the item. MJ at the window was completely rude and rolled his eyes at me. I won't be back. Well, haven't had the food yet because I couldn't see a menu. To order on line, you have to have their app. Once you have that then you have to tell them how you're going to pay and then you have to tell them the address of where you want it delivered....all before you can see a menu. I'm staying in a hotel so I don't know the address and I couldn't see the menu so I don't know if they even have anything I would want. That's a lot of hoops to jump through before I even know if I want to eat there. The nice thing about Portales, there are plenty of other places to eat. read more

Decided to go to Something Different Grill since it was open for dining in. A couple went in the door right before us and sat down. We followed right behind them and found a table. Three girls were at the register and one poor girl was waiting on all the tables. We had sat there for about 15 minutes with no glance or acknowledgement that they would be with us shortly. We set the time for 6:50, which was another 8 minutes and then we decided to leave. Around 6:49, the girl prefilled a drink at the table next to us and then walked across the restaurant and gave the two men that had just sat down, menus. The other couple and ourselves are senior citizens, and we're totally ignored. The other guy was a Portales coach so I guess he had special privilege. Why should I patronize this business??? First of all there was roaches everywhere, we even had some crawling on the ceiling where we sat to eat our food. When we asked to speak to a manager we were told the roaches have been an ongoing issue and there wasn't a manager there at that time and they didn't know when one would be in. The person even said sometimes they go hours without a manager. Horrible gross environment. I can't imagine working there is a cake walk either as the poor person who helped us seemed confused and fed up with the roaches situation. Do better. I am really impressed with this restaurant and the customer service that I received. The food was very tasty, it had that Asian fusion flavor. It was a healthy choice for me, and that is very important! But I think what I was most impressed with is my server. His name is Jaden. I was surprised to find out that he is only 16 years old. He carries himself very well, it in the way that I would expect him to be a manager or such. This kid has a positive attitude. He's very receptive. And it was as important to him as it is to me of my customer service experience. I'm looking forward to dining here on my next trip through. Oh, and one of the things that I would like to see in the future is a KETO menu. A KETO menu would send a positive message to diners that you care about healthy options. More and more people are interested in their health and having healthy options available. Ordered pickup around 8:30, a fettuccine alfredo and a chicken teriyaki bowl. Mind you, we order from here often and have never had an issue. First, the chicken teriyaki bowl is missing the teriyaki sauce so that ruined that order. And the fettuccine alfredo is more water than it is sauce, ruined the bowl. I haven't been too impressed with their food, and especially their service, despite multiple tries. This last attempt did me in, I ordered from the APP for the third time. I didn't get caesar dressing as the app said they had. I paid extra x2 for extra parmesan cheese and green chillies in my chicken/broccoli Alfredo (2 meals). I had to wait over 15 to 20 minutes for my order and I didn't get it until I had to go in to get it. You'd think I learned from my last order to "drive up". The food was cold. I paid extra for coconut in my Diet Coke and didn't get it. They seem to never get my orders correct when ordering from the APP. I recommend you do not order anything extra because you'll pay for it and may not get it. read more

I'm in Portales, NM for a meeting and this restaurant was recommended by some locals. There is something for everyone on their menu. I had the fiesta salad and it was excellent. Something Different does indeed have something different to offer, but it is all very familiar food. Giant baked potatoes with all sorts of toppings, philly cheese steaks, ginormous salads (their honey mustard dressing is awesome), pasta dishes, cheesecake. I'm just firing off random things I've eaten there in the past. The service is always pretty good too. The waitstaff is usually comprised of a few pretty local gals. They don't have a load-it yourself potato bar (darn!), instead there are named options. We got the "Jacked-up Spud" with jack cheese and green chills. It was "ok" ... really truly just ok - well actually I think I might need some tums. I asked the staff what they are known for & enjoy best on the menu and they said: Bowls and Spuds. So my friend got the Chx & Beef bowl and I got the Chx Fajita Spud. Thankfully I ate less than half of my meal. It came out and I immediately asked for a spare plate to scrape the thick mound of icky looking vibrant yellow cheese-goo from the top on this monstrous single potato. I just couldn't eat it. Once scraped almost completely clean I started to eat and it was "ok"... I mean it was a potato - not too hard to cook a potato. Unfortunately all the crap on top that caused it to be almost $7 was the gnarly unsatisfactory culprit. My friend later told me he has seen better potatoes at county fairs - I mean this is a restaurant... You would think it would be better. Yet I would've been "ok" with that... I mean I ordered a potato - I got a potato... Service was slow but ok as well. But what I couldn't stand were the FLIES. Ugh shoo fly shoo... Moving from San Diego where restaurants are literally everywhere, to a small town where the choices are a lot more limited has taken some adjusting to. So I've had to rely on the recommendations of others to find places to eat. So when a friend said we should try this my step dad and I decided to check it out. I can assure you that we are never going back. I ordered chicken Alfredo with broccoli, because my love for pasta runs deep. When I got it, the broccoli was cold and had just been thrown on top of the pasta. I thought that was extremely weird because I've always had them mixed together. Then when I actually tasted it, it was just about as bland as you could get. I had to take it home and mix it with a ton of hot sauce to attempt to give it a decent flavor. This place is really something different! Sitting in the middle of the small town of Portales, NM, you would not expect them to have the diverse menu that they have. I tried several dishes including the Super Bowl, which has rice, vegetables, Teriyaki beef, schrimp and chicken. They are famous for the baked potatoes. The varieties are plenty and these potatoes are huge!! They also offer a large breakfast menu, too. The service is decent. Most of the waitresses are in their early 20's, probably from nearby college, WT. All of them were nice and polite, which give the hometown feel to your meal. Total hit or miss. I order the same thing every time I go there. 2 create your own baked potatoes. %75 of the time now they have my order either wrong or NEVER HAVE ENOUGH TOPPINGS! The reason this upsets me so much is because it's $35 for 2 baked potatoes! I always order extra chives and tonight I literally got 8 tiny little chives. It's not worth the money when they mess up. But... when the right cook is working and he loads the potatoes up, it's amazing!! I think I'm just gonna find out who the cooks are. And only order when the good one working. My wife usually orders the Taco wrap with sweet potato fries. It takes a little longer, but worth the wait. The service is always friendly and top notch. Pros: Customer service is pretty good through dine-in and drive-thru. Drive-thru is where they shine though, never had a bad experience and usually I'll have a laugh too. Cons: I cannot count the times I have found hair in my food. Maybe, as with other coincidences in my experiences, this was just my life. But it is very unnerving to find what is clearly and eyelash, complete with hair root and every thing, inside of a teriyaki bowl. These events actually halted my going here for over a year. For the area, Something Different Grill is a perfect place for a quick and filling meal. I first tried Something Different Grill when one of my classmates ordered chips and salsa from them for one of our group meetings. It was delivered to the house and we devoured that spicy salsa with those crisp tortilla chips in no time. It was delicious! My second time trying Something Different Grill was with a friend of mine after we had worked out. We were craving something "healthy" but didn't want a Subway sandwich. So we ventured to Something Different. Inside, the restaurant is large enough to accommodate about 20-25 tables for four. Decent sized and you won't feel cramped sitting next to other people. The wait staff was kind and greeted us as we walked through the door and told us to sit anywhere. I ordered an appetizer of chips and salsa (which I'm not sure where it was located on the menu but they have it if you ask for it), and debated between a baked potato or a salad. I chose the zesty ranch salad. The portions are pretty large, but I was surprised to see my chicken all cut into cubes already, I usually see a whole chicken breast atop a bed of salad but not here... it wasn't bad, it was just "something different"... lol The flavor of the sauce on the chicken could have been enough for me to have dressed my salad with! I didn't even have to pour salad dressing over my salad because the "zesty" sauce on the chicken made the salad taste so sweet, savory, and spicy. I'd totally order this salad again. On a separate occasion, I ordered the cheesy steak sandwich with a side salad. The cheesy steak sandwich is indeed, very cheesy. I could only finish about 3/4 of the sandwich and all of the salad before having to call it quits. It was so tasty though and filled with thinly sliced beef. read more
