One of the best places to go when you're craving something unhealthy. So glad that there is a McDonald's in Portales - this really helped my friends and I get through some times of hunger and were too lazy to cook. I was a little - actually, super excited when I saw that they had the new "build your own custom creation" menu. Who would have thought! Out of all the McDonald's in Los Angeles, a McDonalds in New Mexico would have it before LA. These new "create your taste" machines allow the customer to skip having to have real live interaction with the worker and just submit your transaction directly into their system. We were a little confused as to where to grab our alert devices that would buzz us when the food was ready, but apparently the workers had them at the front counter. While you can order from the entire menu on the machines, I opted to create my own creation. These McDonalds in the mid-west have burgers served on Texas toast, so obviously I went with that as my bun of choice. Adding additional protein costs extra money, but you're able to add whatever ingredients you want to your burger (if I remember correctly). With all the options, you can be standing at the machine for several hours. Not only does this McDonalds have the ordering machine, but they have a little island in the middle with charging mats and devices that you can borrow. There's also a "take a book" or something in the corner next to the utensils where kids can grab a book to read. So awesome! The burger I custom created - 1/4 pound on Texas toast with cheese, fried onions, lettuce, tomato, and whatever else I threw on there - turned out to be pretty tasty. It was definitely the Texas toast that made it taste that good! Can't really rate a fast food join on their food, but I've been here pretty often and I've always left feeling happy - and a little regretful of the French fries that I've put into my mouth. tl;dr - So amazed by their custom creation menus. The locals probably see this everyday and were super confused by me standing in front of it and taking pictures to capture my order. Restaurant is always pretty clean. Staff is efficient - I've seen baseball teams come in and they're always incredibly calm while taking their orders - and really friendly. read more

Easily the slowest drive-thru in the entire area. Always be prepared to get redirected to a mobile stall while they run your "fast" food out to you. read more

Went in there today and got a McChicken the only thing I got was a piece of chicken on a burnt bun with two pickles when I got home 60 years old the weather is bad today and didn't feel like getting back out so this is a third time I have wasted money going through this drive-thru try to call somebody won't pick up the phone try to call corporate you got to have a McDonald's email you can't have your own or they won't answer you back bunch of hassle I guess I'm stopping going to get my food at McDonald's I'm in there three times a day. read more

We lived in Portales many years, but since then have moved to Texas and being retired, we travel all over the country. He either orders the oatmeal or biscuits and gravy, and there is always plenty of gravy. This particular Portales does not give you an adequate portion for what you pay for. My husband ordered a large biscuits and gravy. They gave him two biscuits and a half of a small cup of gravy. I wish I had taken a picture of the amount in the cup. When he poured it over the biscuits, you couldn't even see the gravy. He basically ate two dry biscuits. read more

This is the worst experience I've ever had. I'm allergy to dairy food so I ordered a sausage egg muffin without American cheese. But they give me one with the cheese inside. I went to the counter to tell them and asked to change. And found out they only simple remove the cheese inside while the cheese has already melted inside. This is the only Mcdonald's in the country that will have you park when no one is in line. No matter what you order, when you order. You will pull forward. they are trying to bump their numbers to cheat the system and make it look like they are faster then they are. Just be honest and provide good service. This mcdonald's went from being the best in Clovis/Portales to the worst in about a 2 year time. Generally I wouldn't care but we don't have that much as service members, the least we could do is have good service return to this small town mcdonald's. Also it's nasty when my food is handed to another car and the person looks through realizes it isn't theirs and the guy bring it to 2 other cars before me. Busy but not crazy at the store but no bacon on my $9.99 Double Bacon QPC meal is pretty disappointing and annoying.

First of all, 1 star is far too high of a review for this particular McDonald's. I can't even describe every time that this McDonald's has failed to adequately complete even the simplest order. However, since the McDonalds here changed the way they make us park on the side, service has been horrible. We wait up to 30 minutes for our food and often things are missing. This McDonalds has very bad customer service. When I was in the drive thru, the menu wasn't even up even though they were open. I figured since the menu board wasn't up we just pull up to the window. Waiting for 30 minutes and when I finally pulled up to the window they said we had to go around and order though menu that wasn't even on. After i asked why he closed the window on me. They dont wear gloves!! Dude was dipping a McRib in sauce with NO GLOVES! Disgusting! No gloves when they portion fries..eat out of fries they gonna serve, manager said "oh it's ok" wtf?? on 1/1/19 I got into drive thru at 10:15pm. finally got to payment window at 10:48pm. Other cars were leaving the line as we waited. First thing we hear through the window is the F word from the employee at the window talking with another employee. Our order was wrong, cold and fries half cooked mixed with stale old ones. Bacon Smokehouse was cold and missing items that are supposed to be on the burger. McChicken was cold. Asked for no ice in my drink.. you guessed it, full of ice. So I cannot continue to give my hard earned money to a place that has such awful service and bad food. This is not the first time having a bad visit, just the last straw. read more

First off the front desk people are absolutely disrespectful. What ever happens to customer is always right. Had a free fry on the McDonald's app for rewards and ended up charging me for it. I asked why and they said " oh you are right it should have only been $1.08 " because I had gotten a soda as well. And she said the people at the second will help us out. They handed us the fry and said have a good night but why did I get charged for the fry if I was supposed to get it for free. The girl comes to the window and says either I get my Fries or my refund. But why in the world would it even be a question if I get my refund or fry? Either way I paid for it when u wasn't supposed to. So I just said give me my refund and they handed me back $3 and some change. But why didn't they give me the whole refund? My total order was 4 something and they gave me back $3 something. Like really? I want my WHOLE refund not just what I wasn't supposed to pay for. Didn't get the fry. So at the end of the day those people are plain out rude and impolite and it's common sense on what you have to do to do your job right. read more

Normally good. It has become habit or normal to be asked to pull forward to a blank window to wait for your order. There does t even need to be other vehicles in the drive through. It's to keep the employee's numbers down for service time at the window. So instead of being proficient and effective at their job they make the customer suffer. This is by far the worst thing any fast food restaurant does, and this McDonald's in Portales is notorious for doing it. Stop sacrificing your customer service to keep your service time down. 5-6 years ago this same McDonald's would've been at least 4 stars as they were fast and never asked to have you pull forward. read more
