First let me say we've taken all our dogs here for years and have always been happy! Our last visit, however, was exceptional. Our golden doodle was recently diagnosed with cancer and we had to amputate a leg. She was long overdue for grooming but there was nothing we could do until she was feeling up to it. Our groomer, Meg, let us bring her in at a slower time so it would be less stressful. I have been a 6 yr, loyal customer of Somerset Grooming. I recently took them for a visit and heard an unfortunate story of a false yelp review. Being a very happy customer of Somerset's Grooming I want to point out how wrong this is. Chris, the owner, not only loves what she does, she is so very patient and loves my crazy animals. She is a professional with great technique and skill. I am upset because this is something that could potentially hurt this business and we do not have many left like this one. In a world where corporations are taking over the "mom and pops" with a heart, I do not want to eventually have to take my beloved dogs to a corporate chop shop like Pet Smart ever again. Yelp reviewer Kimberly S once confused this establishment for Somerset Dog Kennels, leaving her dog well past closing on her one visit. When she attempted to make her 2nd appt, she was told the shop was not a good match. The situation was very professionally handled but when someone is not used to being told no, they sometimes do very backhanded things out of spite... And this leads us to the problem, when entitled consumers feel they have been slighted they will fabricate stories. Sadly the internet has given voice to those who feel they deserve special treatment and this is why the rest of us can't have nice things. Kimberly, you tripped yourself up in your exaggerated story. Why would you return even a second time if "every" time you took your dog there was a problem? Every single time I take my little dog here she is always either bleeding they damaged her eye and she always has fleas when she leaves this Grooming please stay away I see all these positive reviews but then I get people asking me later if they got fleas and then I said yeah and then I would have to go get them treated so please do not take your dog room here.. they even ripped off one of her nails from her paw and couldn't stop the bleeding. Had a terrible experience here. My dog normally saw Chris, the owner, but for some reason another groomer named Emily groomed my dog on this day without me knowing prior. Called the office after grooming to speak to Chris or a manager about Emily upcharging me because apparently my dog bit her and another groomer. Never have I ever had a problem with my dog biting anyone. My dog also had a razer like bloody burn on his neck and a gash above his eye. I was furious. The manager I spoke to asked me if it seemed like Emily was on something What?!? Why would she ask me that? Chris, the owner, ended up calling me and apologizing for switching groomers on me, but was adamant that Emily was a very compassionate groomer. This place is amazing. I used to go to petsmart and they butchered my pups (Yuki) hair so I decided to check this place out because of the reviews and distance. They did an amazing job with my 5 month old. She came home less fussy than she normally does after coming from the groomers and they even put a little cute flowered bow on her. The last time I took my pup to petsmart, they made her hair uneven and they shaved her to the point where there was almost no fur. Somerset Groomers evened out her and made it look amazing. We have brought our Maltese to Chris for a few years now. I can't imagine my dog going anywhere else! After being recommended by a few people, we tried our Somerset and haven't looked back. I do NOT recommend this place an all!! Terrible. Inexperienced. My normal groomer retired and I went to this place for the 1st time. I talked to the owner Chris and agreed, she, Chris, the owner, was supposed to groom my dog at the TROY location. She obviously didn't. Instead, Chris gave my dog to one of her very young, very inexperienced barely a groomer, without my knowledge, groom my little 7 LB, well behaved Shih Tzu. When I went in to pick her up, Chris was not there and the other girls made me pay first, then brought out my dog. Now I know why. I was shocked. I dropped her off for a complete "trim", as well as bathe, blow out, teeth, nails trim & grind smooth. I even showed them quite a few pictures on my phone and all different angles, face, body, paws, of how my dog was normally groomed. This young inexperienced girl shaved her down to skin. Grrrr. She literally cut off my dogs eyelashes!!! She shaved her butt so short it was very red. She forgot to trim her nails and grind smooth. Her hair was all unevenly shaved and her ears cut hap hazard and uneven. My poor dog was terrified and shaking and she never does that! My dog looked like a 5 year old cut her with a bad razor and old scissors. Literally. This business claims that they work slow and pay attention and not rush the dog. What they mean to say is "every groomer here is a very brand new and training, inexperienced and they have only been grooming dogs for 6 months to a year, I asked them how long they have been grooming. that's why we are so slow" Mind you, my dog does not bark, she's very calm, she's easy to groom, she doesn't bite, she just sits there nicely while you work on her. I have literally taken my dog to be groomed every 4-6 weeks, for the last 9 years and this was the absolute WORST!!! Of course I left several messages for Chris, the owner And she has never called me back, never offered a partial refund or discount on next trim, nothing. Zero. That was her response, no response. They took us right away and Rhylee was done within an hour and a half. The place I used to take her to, she would be there for five hours before they called me. The short time frame she was there was very pleasing to me because Rhylee didn't have to sit there for hours and wonder where I was or if I was coming back. Update on our prior review (below): We were able to get in touch with the owner today who was very apologetic and, without asking, informed me she would refund me and pay for any vet bills (if any) that occurred from the incident. We did bring her in following the call and the vet had to staple up the wound. We reiterate, we understand mistakes happen, but we wished we would have been told of this when we picked up our dog. The owner was in complete agreement of this. She was very professional about the matter and she did follow up on her word and repaid and refunded all costs (including grooming session) and terminated the groomer that worked on our pup. I don't want to push anyone away from this business, but I do want to say check over your dog immediately after they are groomed (wherever you end up going). If there is a problem, the owner here does take it seriously, which was comforting in the end. Original review: Unfortunately after a couple visits to Somerset Dog Grooming, we are going to have to find another groomer. The groomer asked if I wanted to pick out a bandana for our dog when I picked her up. I thought it was a nice gesture considering we weren't offered this last time. However, now I'm wondering if it was an opportunity for her to cover up the gash on our dog's neck, which we found after we took off the bandana at home. I went here to get my cat's nails trimmed. The woman who took care of Edgar is willing to trim cats' nails as long as the cat is friendly and the person who is owned by the cat holds the cat. I'm so thankful for this service because my cat's nails grow like weeds and feel like needley swords. It looks like they mostly groom dogs. I saw a lot of adorable, small, fluffy dogs with breed appropriate cuts and they were wearing bows/bandanas when they left. They do accept credit cards and you can tip on the card - just let them know ahead of time. I figure any person brave enough to trim the nails of a cat that does not own them deserves a tip :-) read more
