So...some people might see this review and contend that it seems out of place. With the majority of reviews coming in at 4s and 5s, one would probably think, "This guy doesn't know what he is talking about." It would be a fair assumption, but one that is incorrect. I will now begin my review.
I had heard tons of good things about this restaurant. Most of the good was fed to my wife by ex-coworkers who raved accolades about Solo Bella. Maybe it is because pickens are so slim in the Jackson area, maybe it is because people don't have Sicilian grandmothers cooking for them at home, or maybe it is because an Italian restaurant with a BYOB policy garnishes high reviews (for one reason or another.) On a whole, I was unimpressed.
The location was completely unexpected and actual structure and design was pretty nice. Walking in the front door, you are greeted with a clean establishment, competent hostess, and a cool looking pizza oven. The hostess led us past the pizza oven to our table and I would have to say that the actual dining area looked nice as well. Here I will make a note on personal preference and that is that I really dislike dimly lit restaurants. I notice that a lot of Italian restaurants love to throw the lights on an ultra dim setting to set the "mood." That poor lighting, coupled with some wine, and a carbo loaded pasta meal makes me sleepy. It also causes my eyes some discomfort as they attempt to focus on random lights in the room.
The menu was a decent menu, although I found some of the food to be overpriced. My main gripe with Italian restaurants is that the food is never as good as Nonna's and it always comes at a premium price. To be clear, a plate of pasta "costs" about $3.00 to make. Paying $12 to $20 for a plate of pasta with whatever sauce, seems absurd to me. If the pasta was homemade that would be one thing, but it doesn't appear to be. Because of this, I wanted to stay away from the pasta dishes. I attempted to order the ribeye steak. Unfortunately for me, they were out of steaks, so I was back to pasta or pizza. At this point I am going from a 5 star experience to a 4 star experience, despite the lights.
The waitress was very attentive, she apologized for the steak shortage and I decided to go for a stuffed rigatoni with bolognese. Our order in total was a caeser salad, eggplant rollatini, shrimp oreganata, and my rigatoni. I would say that out of all of it, the salad was the best thing on the table. The eggplant rollatini was a cheesefest, which I like, but there was nothing spectacular or noteworthy about it. The shrimp oreganata was split up the belly, stuffed, and left in the shell, making it difficult to peel and a pain/mess to eat. My rigatoni was just plain. The sauce was decent, but the pasta was a well cooked seemingly store bought/frozen pasta. Definitely nothing to write home about. I was interested to see that you could order a side of ricotta cheese for $4.00. Being a fan of cheese, I asked if the ricotta was home made and of course, it was not. Why would someone want to buy a side of store bought ricotta cheese for $4.00?
This all brings me from a 4 star experience to a 3 star.
Here is the windup. The amount of food you get in your entree is bordering on absurd. The portion size is huge, but you aren't supposed to "share," and are discouraged from doing so with a $6.00 sharing fee. I ate maybe a quarter of my store bought rigatoni. I joked that I would be eating pasta all week. The kick in the pants came the next day, when I checked my receipt that I signed without proofing the night before. My already overpriced $16.00 plate of pasta got charged to me at $28.00. I called back and they immediately corrected the mistake, but that shouldn't happen with a computerized ordering/paying system. I am not the guy who thinks you should get things for free for simple mistakes, but I do think that you should incentify your customers to come back. Solo Bella failed to do this on a number of levels ultimately earning them a 2. read more
