Last night while I was in Freehold Boro, I stopped at Mateo's. I usually get their pizza, which has always been pretty good, so I decided to try something different and ordered the penne vodka with an extra side of vodka sauce. It came with a side salad, and the portion was pretty big for $18. Unfortunately, after literally five bites, I couldn't eat any more. This was probably the worst pasta and sauce I've ever had. The sauce didn't taste like vodka sauce at all and wasn't creamy whatsoever. All I could taste were large chunks of tomato and onion, and the pasta itself was overcooked. I really wanted to like it, especially because I've enjoyed their pizza before, but this dish was a huge disappointment. I ended up leaving most of it untouched. read more

Delivery was over an hour when their website stated 40 minutes Food arrived ice cold. Delivery driver forgot to provide an item that was ordered. I called and they tried to tell me he would come back. The food I got was already ice cold, so I asked for a refund on that item. They are usually good, but having an off night tonight. Came here for lunch during work and loved it! I wasn't sure what I wanted so I was looking at the menu but I kept going back to the pizza in the display case because it looked delicious. Decided to go with a slice of Buffalo chicken and a slice of mushroom. Both were amazing! My coworker got a salad which also looked really good. I was also told to try the brick oven bakes wings. Can't wait to go back and try more things. Side note, Both owners( they were brothers) came out and talked to us and thanked us for coming. The whole staff was so friendly. Went with friends to try out Mateos. First thing I look at is the appearance. Most importantly is it clean? Mateos was spotless. I was impressed with the staff. Friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. 6 different dishes at our table. Did I mention that the portions were large. Took home half for lunch the following day. Deserts? Mateo's has some stellar ratings on Yelp. It was good but they made it out to be L&B's or something. The sausage pizza was my favorite and it was your typical pizzeria pie. The pepperoni was solid and of course the plain worked. As Dave Portnoy would say it was your basic football pizza. They had quick delivery and the guy on the phone was kind. I really like the food here but I won't be coming again. Orders have been consistently late, but food was good so I kind of accepted it. Last time I ordered, however, I ordered through grubhub, which they take part in and when I arrived to pick up, they said they didn't receive the order, and that they have been having issues with their tablet so they were receiving phone orders from grubhub instead, which they haven't been getting. But somehow they accepted it and the charge went through, right after they charged my credit card manually for the order, which was somehow a higher price than grubhub's order. After many times of repeatedly asking them about getting charged twice, and speaking with the other employee who swiped my credit card, they acknowleged that there were two charges, and set about refunding my orders. But instead of refunding the order that they additionally charged, they spent 15 minutes on the phone trying to get grubhub to refund me. Which I can only assume is because they profit more from not having to go through grubhub. I later overheard one of the people making the pizzas asking why they didn't just refund the order on the restaurant's end. This aggravation was not addressed, and the only thing that was said to me was that I should have called in the order, and not gone through grubhub. Which is pretty ridiculous to me--if you offer the service, it is not the customer's fault for using it. An apology was only half heartedly offered at the end. My decision to never return was solidified when I saw one of the men making the pizza use the cloth that was used to wipe down their food preparation counters, as a way to hit his pants in order to get rid of all the flour dust on them. And then use the same method on his shoes. All right next to the pizzas. read more

The food tastes good and is reasonably priced, but they never wear gloves. I watched the lady who takes orders handle money and then put food in the oven without gloves on or washing her hands. I wanted to send her and her family a delicious Italian meal as that's her favorite cuisine I live in Brooklyn and relied on Yelp reviews and the help of another New Jersey friend to recommend Mateos The friend receiving the meal is very particular about her food and I hoped I made the right choice as I just want to make her happy if even for one night The staff were very pleasant and friendly to deal with on the phone and I was pleased to hear their Italian accents as I then knew this would be authentic Italian cuisine! I ordered shrimp scampi, chicken parm, chicken Francese and a Childs meal of pasta and meatballs along with broccoli, pastas and salads I thought their prices were very fair and delivery was free (gave a tip) and exactly on time! My friend texted me this evening to say that everything was yummy and that the entire family loved the meal and I know her she wasn't just being nice! Stopped in for a bite to eat with my wife recently as I like to give all the local restaurants a try. This place has changed a few times as I'm not sure why that spot has never made it. For your typical pizzeria restaurant the food wasn't bad. We had a pasta dish as well as some rice balls and and tried the pizza as well. All were good. Not great but good. The place was pretty empty so the food came out fairly quickly. Fresh and hot. I would recommend for a quick bite. Don't expect a gourmet meal, but certainly worth the money. Waitress was Spanish and seemed a little hard to understand and seemed like she struggled with English a bit. read more

The pizza itself is actually pretty good. Good sauce, good crust, and if your just want to walk in and get plain pie or a margarita it should be fine. It's not better than the other good places in the area nor is it worse. For an area with good pizza options it's average. The negative review is more a reflection of the remainder of the experience. They put the wrong topping on my delivery which was a little annoying. I asked for hot peppers and they put green peppers so that could be a pretty easy mistake. The delivery was awful though. I was told 45 minutes and I called back at an hour and the guy on the phone said i thought I told you about an hour. Instead my pizza arrives an hour and a half after I order and it's cold. With all of the other good options in the area I probably would not order from here again. read more

Every few months downtown freehold holds the "flavor of freehold" where locals pay and can sample foods from participating local restaurants. During one of these events I had the pleasure of trying the food at Mateos! Pizza was great... took the menu home and put it in my menu drawer! One day my husband and I felt like ordering pizza and didn't feel like the same old places- into the menu drawer and I pulled out the Mateos menu... well let me tell you they have been out go to delivery place ever since... the pizza is great- we have gotten a few different pies from the grandma, vodka square, to just simple plain pie, we also like the Main Street salad with portobellos mozzarella and roasted red peppers. But the hidden secret is the wings... they have super tasty buffalo wings! I haven't eaten in the restaurant except for the flavor of freehold briefly so I can't speak to that... but hopefully this place is around for a while (that spot seems to switch over a lot) because it has become our go to pizza (and wing) place!!! read more

Had high hopes for this place, but totally underwhelmed. 5 people tried the pizza and all 5 hated it. Soggy and soft. Crunched it up a little in the oven, but vodka pie was flavorless. Plain pizza was a 5/10, at best. Had a few other pizzas with toppings, all below average in my opinion. Wanted to try this place because online pictures of vodka pie looked good, but pictures were deceiving in this case. Tried it once, and once is more than enough. Will never go back! read more

Finally a really great Italian place in Freehold to order from. Have not been disappointed with their food yet and we order from them almost every weekend! Salads are great, especially with salmon and avocado. Their San Marzano pie is also very very delicious. Keep up the good work! read more

The marinara sauce on my penne was fresh as well as the bread provided with the salads. The wait was a bit extensive but was understood once to food came out steaming hot.
