I used this service for my German Shepherd and Courtney was amazing but unfortunately just as the training completed she left for maternity leave and we were stuck trying to get Jeff to do the follow up visits included in the package and was constantly given excuses for his failure to do the follow up training we paid for in the initial cost. It is unfortunate that we did not get what we paid for. I can highly recommend Courtney but I would not recommend anyone to try and engage with Jeff as it is a futile waste of time. read more

Can't offer educated debate about why striking dogs offers any form of positive results. Part of his training methods include hitting dogs on the nose with rolled up news paper!?! Yes, the most sensitive part of the dogs body that has thousands of nerve endings. Owner is VERY rude. He kept saying how my dogs problems were all my fault without asking any questions about my situation. He may be a great trainer (which he will brag about), but needs to learn a thing or two about human compassion and understanding that his clients need his help. When I told him that he was making me feel uneasy, he replied that our conversation was over and that I was being defensive. I literally said "I have to tell you, this conversation is making me feel sad. I feel like I am not doing anything right" FYI never say "YOU did this" or "YOU don't do this". Change your language to "most people do this or don't do that". It is less confrontational and more open. I planned to hire this guy right off the bat, but after this conversation, I will be recommending others stay away from his aggressive behavior. read more

My dog was cut by his prong collar the first week. I was never told. My dog lost 1/5 of his body weight and I was not told. I saw when I visited. Somehow they blamed me. Jeff does not train the dogs in Providence. He lives in Florida and has a few young girls running the board and train. There is no guarantee. For $6,000 my dog still had extreme anxiety and aggression. When I complained to Jeff he said "he is just an aggressive dog ". Well then what the hell did I lose my dog for six weeks for? Jeff is over the dog training thing he is a social media influencer. This "training " is not for little dogs or big dogs for that matter. You will be blamed when your dog immediately reverts to past behavior. My vet warned me, I should have listened. Watch how Jeff reacts to this review. read more

Almost every time I go for a walk with our dogs passers by comment "wow your dogs are so well trained, I wish mine were like yours!" 100% of the credit goes to Solid K9 training. Using their techniques we trained our older dog to be 100% off leash under voice control. We sent our younger dog for intensive training at Solid K9. She too is now wonderfully trained. Yes, we use a prong collar on the off chance they are on leash and an electric collar when they are off leash. But given that they are so well behaved it's rare that we need to use it. The people that say bad things about solid K9 and their techniques don't know from first hand experience that they are not cruel, do not "zap" the dogs. They train with treats and only use the electronic collar on low stimulation while training. Low stimulation is mostly like a soft tap. The high stimulation is used VERY rarely. The result of their techniques is that our dogs get to run free enjoying our walks whether it be in the woods or on neighborhood streets. They come when they are called and never bother others. I can't say as much for other people's "trained" dogs who pull so hard you wonder who is walking whom? And that can't feel good on the dogs throat? Solid K9 is well worth checking out! read more

I sent my 9 month Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Daisy to the month long Boot Camp because I had not control walking her on lease-way too powerful. I absolutely recommend Solid K9 Training for anybody who would like to have real communication with their dog. When I sent my rescue dog into Solid K9 he was nervous and fearful to a debilitating level. He was great with people, great with dogs, but absolutely horrible with modern technology. The sound of a car door shutting would send him scrambling for the hills. After three weeks in the Board & Train program, his confidence had skyrocketed. He is still a naturally nervous dog, but the team at Solid K9 gave him a base level of confidence which I could simply never have provided him in a very short amount of time. I love jeff! We brought our bulldog to him after rescuing him. This bull dog had 3 homes in over a year. Once jeff met with our dog chance he confirmed that yes he was going to help us and that chance could go to doggy daycare or the kennel services. This was/is a huge relief because we sometimes travel. While our dog still cant really be around other dogs. He pulls minimally on the leash, does not bark when away and respects the furniture. We met with jeff 6 years ago and I would take my dog back to him. Jeff was caring to all the animals he housed and at the time invited us to her personal house and used one of his dogs to help along the training... her name was girl. The dogs are highly trainined and he does not hurt animals, he reminds them what they need to accomplish and that they need to respect their boundaries. read more

I never actually used Jeff for dog training services but in 2012 I reached out to him when I was having issues training my dog. The reason I'm writing this review is because I came on to look for reviews on dog boarding places for a trip we are taking and this business came up so I thought I'd write about my experience. When I reached out to Jeff, he personally went over my options with me on training my dog. I forget what we had decided but I do remember is was going to cost around $2,000. I found out I was pregnant shortly after and I had let him know that I would no longer be able to do this because of the cost. He wrote back and was willing to work with me. I specifically remember him telling me it was more important to him to have one less dog turned over to the shelter for bad behavior (not that we would have done that, but many people do) than the money. I thought that was amazing and left me with an amazing impression of him and his business. That dog passed away a couple years ago and now we have a new dog who was very easy to train, however, if she wasn't I would have absolutely looked into using Jeff again. read more

He cuts through all the BS, does NOT enable you to continue makes the wrong decisions (which are the reason you came to him in the first place, let's be honest if you knew how to train your dog properly you wouldn't need him) and knows how to work with dogs. Period. He also continues to be accessible and offers incredible support. Both of our dogs went to his board and train, and we can have a 4 hour Super Bowl party and our dogs stay on their beds, play with toys, and interact with guests in a calm manner when appropriate. Some people say letting a dog sleep on your bed or on the couch is "love", but Jeff reminds us that having dogs who can be safe around friends, children and strangers alike mean your dog can be a member of the family forever. I asked him if he could help with a foster dog I am helping with that has aggression when it comes to food/toys/attn. I thought the board and train would be great and I would pay for it because shelters/rescues don't have the money. I asked if he offered discounts for shelters and his response was, " my prices are on my website". No offer of what I could try at home on my own or even a small discount. Made me realize he's in it for the money. The dog gets adopted and acts out then they'll seek his help at full price. Disgusting and not what this should be about. If you're in to dog related business you should be in it for the love of dogs and helping any way you can. WOW is all I can say. This is the best training ever. I am so impressed with the knowledge and compassion of this group. I have an extremely energetic dog and just trying to teach him the basics. The team here knows how to get it done! I attending a weekend seminar that was very helpful. Just yesterday, I attended a pack walk. This was a wonderful walk, reinforcing what was taught at the weekend. These walks are completely free and you receive constant support and knowledge. The trainers are with you the entire walk, supporting and correcting. My dog was very nervous as we started, looking behind him, unsure about the other dogs. Within 10 minutes of the walk- he was redirected to focus on me, sit immediately when I stopped. I am amazed at the knowledge and care this company provides- everything is done safely and kindly. Jeff has helped me and friends of mine with dog training for the past 3 years. Interestingly, I recently went to a shelter to acquire another dog and was introduced to a couple of dogs who were "trained" by rewarding positive behavior and ignoring any misbehavior. These dogs lunged, humped and barked at my dog while we attempted a pack walk. While the staff were giving unsolicited criticism of Jeff, my dog was walking on heel and exhibiting calm and balanced energy. Based on my experience with 2 rescues with challenging behaviors, I can assure you that Jeff's methods are humane, efficient and extremely effective. Jeff showed me how to train my two dogs to behave in the real world. They were both dogs from rescue groups and they both had some "issues". I tried "positive training" first but was only making progress in controlled situations. Jeff's training techniques in real world situations really works!! Now I can take my dogs with me anywhere I go. I take them to other people's houses and outdoor coffee shops. They are off-leash trained so I take them on long hikes in the woods and runs on the beach. We just got back from a 5 day camping trip with the dogs and they were so well behaved it was like they weren't even there! People often make comments to me about how well behaved my dogs are. Jeff worked with us to train our dogs in a situation where one dog had serious aggression issues against another in our pack. We were able to get much more control and create a happier home with only two sessions. My Golden Retriever boarded at his kennel and had a great time swimming in the pool and being part of Jeff's pack. Prong collars and the Place command have turned our unruly pack into a happy family. Dogs are no longer excluded for bad behavior, but have learned how to be part of the family since we know how to communicate the expected behavior standards to them. My dog was NOT aggressive and STILL is not BUT had many dangerous behaviors that could have harmed her accidentally unless i had a treat in my hand to give her. I met Jeff at a dog show last year during one of his demonstrations and liked what I heard. He takes training very seriously for the safety of the dog, safety of other people and for the dog owner. I started working with him this year because I had one dog with an extremely high prey/scent drive and I got another dog that was 6 months old and needed to learn fast. Two dogs is a challenge so I wanted to work with someone who trains dogs for the real world and that is Jeff. I am four sessions in with Jeff and we have made amazing progress in every facet of both the dogs behavior and how I work with them. Jeff doesn't just train dogs, he trains the humans and much of our training sessions are spent just talking about certain techniques or scenarios I need to work on. My older dog pulled on the leash for a year and Jeff and I were able to work that out in 3 minutes. Most of the training I had done prior to Jeff was reward-based training and while my older dog understood many commands, reward-based training fails in the real world because the dog is choosing between a treat and what it wants to do which might be better than a treat. It might want to run into the street, jump on and knock over your neighbor's kid, or chase a deer or rabbit which we have plenty of around our home. None of those scenario's end well... With Jeff's training, my dogs are learning how they are supposed to behave in all situations and it's non-negotiable. It isn't a system based on do this and you get this cookie as a reward if you sit. The reward my dogs get is to run free in fields and woods, swim and fetch balls and sticks and play with other dogs and people while remaining safe and well behaved. That is the best reward there is. They were at the dog pond yesteday with 11 other dogs playing till their hearts content. When I left, I called them and they walked out of the pond, ran to my side and walked through the entire field to the car with no need of a leash. My dogs will now lie down in place for several hours without moving until they are told to move whether they are inside or outside. The dogs sit when I stop on a walk in an instant and do not bark or lunge at other people or at other dogs. They now do not walk out or in a door until they are allowed to do so. After one week we progressed to recall training employing an e-collar. No, it doesn't hurt the dog and yes, it's one of the best training tools around. Now after several weeks both dogs are coming on command in open fields in and around other dogs or other distractions. While they both still wear the e-collar, they are at the point where I hardly have to use it because they understand what to do when I call them. The other day I had my dogs sitting completely still and silent as another neighbor walked by with her dogs ripping her arm out of her socket and barking. She just looked at me in amazement. My dogs did not move one inch or make one sound as she walked by. This incident also happened in front of another neighbor's house who saw my dogs wearing e-collar's the previous and decided to give me her negative opinion on how I should or should not train my dogs! I found the situation ironic. So you could say I am pretty happy with the service thus far for both myself and my dogs. read more

I have been listening and interacting with Jeff's program for over 1 year. The radio show that he offers is fantastic- great advice for no cost- now that is generous! Of course hiring him and having him work with your dog(s) does come at a price, which reflect his services no doubt. Jeff is so different from many trainers, though, because he is willing to go ANYWHERE to work with a dog. A few weekends ago he and a few fellow trainers took a nonprofit trip from Rhode Island to Kentucky to demonstrate to a county shelter how to handle aggressive dogs and work on dog socialization. I promise you, that you can't find dedication like that very easily. He also brings rescue dogs into his home, trains them (excellently) and then adopts them out. If they prove to be too much of a challenge, he DOES NOT put them down, but gives them sanctuary and keeps them as part of his balanced pack. In response to the "1 star review" posted: Yes, I imagine that Jeff does spend time away from his home. He has other clients around the state, as well as the country. He has a 3 hour radio show every Saturday morning and often holds seminars for a few hours every few months. However, when you receive services from Solid K9 Training, you're not ONLY getting Jeff Gellman. You're getting his wonderful and experienced staff, his CHILDREN, his wife, his pack of dogs, as well as other clients dogs whom are also training--all there every day to work with your dog on making it a better canine member of society and a happier pet. What an amazing facility! I have worked with other trainers and none has "gotten" my dog like John. We brought our 3 year old rescue dog there after he had bit several people. We assumed he would stay for a 5 week board & train program, but after 3 weeks our guy was ready to come home. John helped us understand what needs to be done to lead our dog in a consistant & clear way so that he no longer feels that biting is his only option. John is really chill and you can tell that he really loves & respects dogs. I know my dog was treated well and was not traumatized in any way. We met Jeff when we dropped off but he was up front that he no longer does the training for board & train program. After doing a ton of research on trainers I could tell that this was the right place for us even though we are in NYC - the drive is long but well worth it. Jeff is a wonderful trainer. He is working with both my 1yo Lab and my 7mo German Shepherd. He tailors his advice/training to each dog's temperament, stage of development, and any special issues. My goal is to be able to take my dogs anywhere and have them off-leash with confidence that they will have a reliable recall. After just 4 sessions, both of my dogs are well on their way to achieving my goal. They can now go pretty much anywhere on a leash and be a pleasure to have around ... They will lie down happily and peacefully for hours at baseball games, family events, etc. They are also responding to the "come" command off leash quite well, and now we are working on making them more reliable from greater distances and with more distractions. My husband and I hired Jeff as our last hope in August 2011. Our mini dachshund was out of control. He barked uncontrollably at the doorbell and at every sound he heard outside. He also was aggressive and very unpredictable when around people other than my husband and myself. It came to a point that we did not want to take him anywhere and constantly worried when we had people at our house. Shortly after seeing some of these undesirable behaviors we signed him up for training at PetSmart. Although the trainers were very nice, they had no effect helping train our dog. Since giving up the dog was simply not an option, we hired a local trainer to come to our house and work one- on- one with us and our dog. Once again we saw no improvement in our dog's behavior. After spending hundreds of dollars trying to train our dog with no success, I decided to contact Jeff. He was much more expensive than I had wanted to spend but realized it was my last option before eventually having to give him up. We could not have been happier with the results. After a 3 week board and train we have a new dog. We take him with us most places we go and never worry that there will be a problem. Recently at our vet's office, he sat by my side without making a sound, while the other dogs in the waiting room were barking and lunging towards him. No longer am I embarrassed and worried by his behavior. I cannot thank Jeff enough and strongly recommend him!! Not only will he train your dog but he will train you.
