Sol Azteca has been a fave for years and deserves a much better rating than is showing here. Drinks are solid, Sangria has a cinnamon taste and is also delightful. Guac and salsa are outstanding. Almost all the dishes I've tried I've liked. I particularly like the Pollo Veracruzano. It is hard to go wrong at this restaurant, and I've probably been 20 times to this or the Newton location over the years. read more

I went last week with colleagues from work and I left quickly after dinner and forgot to bring the receipt home with me, so I went back the next day and asked the manager to give me another copy of the receipt. He added more money to the tip (50% of what we spent) without me noticing when he printed it out again. Mediocre food, bad service, dishonest owner/manager. The service was difficult. Granted, we had a ton of people, so I understand. But when we asked for separate checks they would not work with us at all. The food was fine... nothing special at all. Great food, great service, great value! I've been walking past here for ages and decided it was time we finally went. I'm glad we did! Started with the queso asado which was wonderfully cheesy and paired great with the chips and salsa. Best part is I think their chips are homemade! Could use a few more pieces of chorizo in the queso, but hit the spot nonetheless. It was my first time trying enchiladas so I got one of each. What was surprising to me was that even the sides of rice, beans, and cabbage were super flavorful! I was expecting bland empty carbs, but nope I couldn't stop eating them! However the steak in the burrito was a little too salty for my taste. Generous portions, between two of us sharing we still went home with half a burrito + sides. Will definitely go back, drinks were great too. Their drinks were tasty and not overly strong. I'd recommend the pina colada over the margaritas. For food I got a combination plate with a cheese quesadilla and enchilada mole verde- highly recommend the combo plates to allow yourself to try a few different dishes because they really do have some classics and different dishes than your average place. I have been going to SA for 30 years. Last night was the first time it appeared to have changed its recipes . Even the salsa was different. My chicken fajitas were overcooked. Service was a bit slow and we had to remind them more than once for chip & salsa, water, napkins. Ordered Margaritas which were good. Some food was good, some not so. I am so sad that this place was not good :( I really really wish it was more tasty, being one of of few mexican restaurants in the area. I had some high(er) hopes given the past reviews about a change in managements and some of the promising food pix---but noooo bueno. Here's what I tried: -TACO AL PASTOR- strong pineapple flavor if you like a little sweet, but the meat was too marinaded and had horrible texture. very greasy as well -STEAK TACOS AZTECA - inedible how dry the steak was. the salsa on the side was tasty....but I couldn't even finish the tacos -BURRITO AZTECA - even the menu doesnt state it, but you can choose your meat filling (chicken, steak, beans). we ended up getting the chicken. overall not bad, but the chicken tasted a little old/funky. It's tough to find good Mexican food in Boston. We've found a couple of local favorites so far, like El Pelon and El Centro Dos. After trying Sol Azteca in Brookline, I'm officially adding it to the list of must-try Mexican restaurants. It reminds me of my favorite restaurants not only in San Francisco but Mexico as well! First of all, the salsa is delicious just on it's own, with real chunks of ingredients rather than the blended varieties you find at fast food chains. Their fish tacos pass the test easily, with generous, fresh ingredients in every bite and a separate piece of lime for each taco! Chicken enchiladas verdes is always my favorite. The plate comes with orange Mexican rice, beans, and pickled cabbage. Doesn't get any better than this! With simple, fresh ingredients, generous portions of food and hospitality, Sol Azteca is not to be missed. PLUS, all of their dishes use corn tortillas (except the burrito), so it's gluten-free friendly. I can't believe it took us so long to discover this gem! read more

Our order: 3 hours late. Told at 9:45pm just not to expect it oh but here's maybe a $10 coupon, good luck finding food now. Then it magically arrives. Leaking and smashed to one side. Brown avocados. Cold crusty beans. A chile relleno hiding in there somewhere. A crispy taco so soft that it jumps to the side with a flick of the finger and crumples. The starving boyfriend tries microwaving his enchiladas. The coleslaw (?) included now seeps icky hot into everything. The mole tastes like BBQ. I basically just spent sixty dollars and three hours waiting for Sol Azteca to give me 3lbs of trash to throw away for them. What did I ever do to you, Sol Azteca? My first recommendation when reading the reviews for this place is to ignore the older ones prior to 2015. This place has changed management and is hitting it's stride. I have been here several times in the last couple months and each time, I leave happy and excited to go back. Recommendations: chorizo fondue is a little greasy but amazing especially topped with their SPECTACULAR salsa (I now order a large container of this for pick up and keep it in my fridge. For real, don't judge, just do it). Their "tacos al pastor" are wonderful. The pork is properly seasoned in a rich bath of blended spices/peppers/juices etc and then charred perfectly and topped with raw onions and pineapple. I like their mole though I want more heat! (This dish is also a ginormous serving. The chicken was tender and succulent and was easily 2+ meals). Ask for it topped with some peppers to combat a little too much sweet and it's divine. My husband loves their enchiladas and he's one of those loyal to one plate people and gets the beef in salsa roja every time. It is delicious so I get it. Their burritos are good though I would recommend going with the entrees and classic plates over them. Beer selection has nice variety and is an excellent compliment to their dishes. I really need to try their margaritas-both on the rocks and frozen because they look icy and enticing! This has been my go-to celebratory spot for almost 5 years! Even through the pandemic, they haven't changed a bit - fresh ingredients, great food, and the staff's unparalleled kindness and attentiveness.. Just a true gem all-around. They get pretty busy, and if you want to eat outside (trust me, you do- it's such a cute spot and not too loud), you should make a reservation (by phone) in advance. Great food and service. It is as authentic as you could get. I did not know what to get at first, but the waiter recommended a few dishes and I ended up getting the Enchiladas Rojas. I substituted my beans for more rice, and the waiter was more than happy to fill my order for no cost. Everything was fresh and definitely not your local fast Mexican food. First impressions: This restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated. We were greeted and seated immediately by a friendly employee. Chips & Salsa: Brought out quickly. The chips were crispy and tasty and the salsa was fresh and tasty and seemed homemade. Alcohol: Mango margarita was delicious! The rice and beans were also tasty, however, the rice was not warm (room temperature). I had one of the specials for the evening-the pork chimichanga. At first this dish was great. The first few bites were perfect, the taste was excellent, the dish was served hot. The pork was very tender and tasty. The problem with this dish was that the more I ate the chimi, the more I realized that it was either way too salty or way too much vinegar was used. Either way, as I ate it, the salty/vinegar taste got stronger. The rice, beans, and marinated red cabbage with the dish were fine. Service: 5 stars. We were very pleased with our service. Overall: We lived in the southwest before returning to Boston, and no matter how hard we try, we cannot find Mexican food comparable to the southwest. After years of passing Sol Azteca, I finally went here with some friends on a cold, cold night. We started off with some chips and an order of guacamole (which was very good and had me scraping the bowl). I was a piggy and went for the combination plate (a choice of any two dinner items listed above). I did the Enchiladas Verdes (Soft tortilla rolled with chicken, topped with green tomatillo sauce, cheese and sour cream) and I THINK the Enchiladas de Mole Verde?? (a rich sauce made with poblano peppers, onions, pumpkin seeds and almonds spread over chicken, cheese or beef enchiladas - I don't remember pumpkin seeds being on the menu though...) Whatever I got, I ate the entire thing. Obviously, both were good (although I could not tell which was which...). I had a Restaurant.com certificate, which saved us a few bucks, but even without it, the price wasn't bad (perhaps because 2 of us didn't get drinks?). I thought it was good, but nothing spectacular. The decor is nice and it was very quiet (probably not so on a weekend though). I can definitely see sitting outside during a nice summer evening (despite the cars driving past on Beacon). read more

Can't believe I didn't know about this place even though it's couple of blocks from my house and university! Okay, so I was walking on Saturday evening looking for place to dine out- nothing special, just to get my tummy full. All the locations before this one were relatively packed so I carried on, until I bumped to a cozy, cheerful Mexican bistro~restaurant where my eyes caught an empty table for 1/2 in the corner of the patio. Place was filled both with youngsters, adults and even retired folks, so pretty welcoming to all demographics. I sat down right next to entrance and opened my iPad to read my e-book. Sweet hostess brought me themenu and a glass of water, and I proceeded to contemplating. I started with a chicken and rice soup, no special expectations tbh, but OH MY GOD!! It was delicious, light and perfectly spiced. It was also served with the side of chips and salsa (free) which made a nice complimentary snack. Main and the second dish was chicken fajitas, which was pretty good despite my already half-full stomach. Can't vouch for a fajitas that much after that great soup, but still it was a good finish. I went to Sol Azteca for my birthday dinner. The food was amazing. They do incredible things with sauces. I had the combo plate with a poblano enchilda, chicken quesadilla abd a chicken taco. I loved that they garnish with slices of avacado. I highly recommend it. Inside looks like a spanish mission with a lot of cool artwork. I would give 3.5 stars if I could, but I'll round up for the amazing friendliness and customer service. From the moment we were greeted until we walked out the door, the staff was super nice. So we had a group of 9 people for dinner and none of us had ever eaten at Sol Azteca before. My husband and I arrived first, and they seated us and brought chips and salsa to the table while we waited for the rest of the party. The chips were above average (not super greasy or stale) and the salsa was really yummy. It is heavy on the onion, but my husband and I enjoyed it, and it definitely has a kick -- I couldn't stop eating! When the whole party finally arrived, we each ordered our entrees (amazingly enough we all ordered off the menu rather than the Restaurant Week menu). My husband had the cheese enchiladas rojas (they happily substituted cheese for beef when he asked) which he said was the best he's been able to find in Boston. I had the combinacion azteca since I couldn't make up my mind with a quesadilla, a tortada, and one cheese enchilada de mole verde. The enchilada was amazing... the quesadilla was not what I would expect from my experience (it's basically a fried Mexican hot pocket -- but loaded with cheese and meat). The tortada was alright but by the time I attacked it, I was totally full... each entree comes with their house cabbage, rice, and black refriend beans. When we finished our meal, two people had to get take-out boxes, but almost everyone else wiped their plates clean... yum. The service (despite other reviews I've read on Yelp) was excellent. Our waitress was prompt and attentive but didn't spend too much time interrupting our dinner and conversation. The restaurant looks much bigger than it does on the outside and I'm not sure the pictures even do it justice... there are two main dining rooms and a private dining room to the left. Overall, pretty good and surpassed our expectations after other Boston Mexican food experiences. I still have to reserve a special place in my heart for the Tex-Mex I've grown up on, but Sol Azteca was a pleasant surprise. read more

Sol Azteca was a hard one for me to rate. Fiddler on the Roof style: On the one hand, the service is great, and it's a fun Mexican restaurant, of which Boston has so few. On the other hand, it lacks exceptional qualities so even though I'd come here again because there is nothing like the comfort of Mexican food, it's more because I can't afford Zocalo. That being said, I'd still give it a good 3.5 stars - I honestly had no real complaints here, it just didn't rock my world. I had the Nopalitos in Salsa Verde, which was a fun novelty item for me. I'd never had cactus before, and I thought it necessary to at least try it, but the sour aftertaste gets old fast. The Enchiladas Vegetarianas were reasonable, but probably my least favorite thing I tried. The vegetables were well-cooked, but the green sauce was mediocre. Of note, the pickled red cabbage should be its own dish. It's delightfully light and crispy/tasty. I had the Carne Asada, which is basically a large slab or meat on a plate. The chorizo on top wasn't a necessity, but I can't exactly complain about a little extra meat...The enchilada was passable, and the rice and beans achieved an awesomeness that all sides should only aspire to. I was delighted with the guacamole but honestly, the red cabbage was so freaking good I was ALMOST willing to trade it in. No, I haven't lost my mind, the cabbage was just that good! If you still have room for dessert, get the Fried Ice Cream. It's perfectly battered and was probably the best fried ice cream I've ever had. Vibe: Sol Azteca is a dark and cozy spot. The decorations and general interior design are on theme without being too kitschy. It's not too fancy and is a nice place for a family meal. They also have outdoor seating in the warmer months. Food: This is where I go if I want hearty, delicious, and traditional "real" Mexican food. I grew up eating a lot of Mexican food, so this place is definitely one of my comfort food restaurants. The food is fresh and the portions are large. I always leave stuffed or with a take-away container. I've gone here too many times to count and have never had a meal I didn't thoroughly enjoy. They have vegetarian options available as well (which isn't the case with a lot of traditional Mexican restaurants). Drinks: I normally get red sangria when I come here. First of all, we both enjoyed the food very much, it was much more interesting and tasty than most Mexican food restaurants we've been to. On top of that, I was impressed by the service: I specified no cilantro for my fiancé's food and the restaurant called me to check on what I would like to do since the accompanying guacamole for that order contained cilantro. Until yesterday, my previous meal at Sol Azteca was a few decades ago as a student. Some memorable meals were had there in the early 1980's. I figured if the establishment had lasted this long, they must be doing something right. I was wrong. The chunky guacamole was a brilliant first choice, as good as I recalled. It was the best thing my party ate through the whole meal. Queso was rubbery with two lonely discs of chorizo sitting atop. The cactus appetiser was actually quite good, tasting more like a mild jalapeño, but less like the grilled version I have had in Mexico City. My puerca (pork) in adobo was simply a mistake. The pork was cold and I asked to have it reheated. It was a veritable shingle of a main course, tough in texture, square in shape, thin and with an acrid and unpleasant sourness. The other plates that my guests were marginally more successful. The sangria was watery and seemingly devoid of alcohol. Service was perfunctory and rather slow. I'll have to live on the memory of the old Sol Azteca, as the current version is not worthy of a return visit. read more

I have been a regular at Sol Azteca for 17 years (I wish I could say 50 years or more) and not once has it disappointed. This place is awesome. The staff are terrific. Super-friendly and super-efficient. This is a home away from home, but with better food (and I am an excellent cook). The host/ess is always very welcoming and warm. Sitting down on a comfortable chair and looking at the art on the walls, makes me feel: I can relax, and I am in for a treat. All the dishes are excellent. If you are not sure, the wait person will take their time with you so you can have confidence ordering (though really, you can't go wrong!). The food and drinks are hands-down terrific. I decided to try Sol Azteca out after I saw their vegetarian menu. The fajitas veggies is the only entree that is naturally vegan (no cheese, guac included :D), but I didn't ask if the other vegetarian stuff could be made vegan. The fajita veggies, though super simple, were well seasoned, and the portion was huge. Three corn tortillas (which were super fresh) were not enough to enjoy the whole plate, but I couldn't finish the whole plate anyway. The rice I believe has to be ordered vegetarian specifically because the yellow rice probably has chicken stock in it. The chicken burrito was enjoyed by my friend, and she said she would definitely come back to try more things. I'll keep this place on my back burner for eating out with friends who are not vegan, just cause one can only eat fajita veggies so many times. Service was super quick and friendly, and the music wasn't too loud so you can carry a conversation easily. It's not necessarily a romantic atmosphere, but it is dimly lit in the evening. read more
