Taco Azul was nice! Their menu is all about 'elevated' Mexican food, serving up fancy twists on the usual dishes. Every taco we tried tasted great, packed with fresh ingredients and lots of meat piled onto a tiny tortilla that didn't stand a chance at containing everything. Were the taco worth $6-$9 each? That's a debate you need to settle with yourself before coming here, because the price tag was not cheap. Margaritas were excellent, and they have a decent deal on pitchers if you have a thirsty group. The original and spicy margaritas were each fantastic, lots of flavor and very refreshing. My friend and I went here for the Cinco de Mayo pre-set menu. I understood the upcharge due to it being a holiday but was hoping the food would at least be somewhat worth the price. NOPE! Though I will say the smoky pineapple margarita was one of the best margaritas I've ever had. Maybe hire a chef as good as your bartender! Some of the tortilla chips were stale, and the guacamole was so underwhelming...mostly just tasted like salt. My friend got the chicken tacos and when her plate arrived it was like a gut punch: they were microscopic. She was done in about 60 seconds. I got the chicken quesadilla, which at least was filling, but it was aggressively mediocre. SO bland, soggy pure white tortilla, and a sad amount of tiny pickled onions. And more of the disappointing guac. I get that it was a busy night but no one ever checked on us and I had to ask for silverware. The fact that we dropped $50 each for chips and guac, which are usually free at other restaurants (probably not guac but at least salsa), two 3-inch tacos (at least make it three!! The plate looked like someone had stolen one), and a quesadilla that would've been better at Chipotle...is truly comical. Total scam. Blue tortillas! Cool! But not the best Mexican cuisine. Queso was good, not great. The chipotle chicken taco was delish and definitely my favorite. Other chicken taco was good too! We tried the bean taco without the sweet potato so it was beans and chipotle mayo and not that good and mushy but that's on me for getting rid of a main ingredient. I came right when it opened on a weekend so it was less busy than usual. My server was really great. Friendly quick efficient service. I had a busy morning in the city so it was nice to come in for their delicious tacos. Speaking of tacos, 3 cheers for the crispy avocado taco. Our last stop in Boston was Taco Azul, and it was the perfect spot to have a light dinner before heading out of town! We had a spot on the patio because it was a sublime July afternoon! Michel was super helpful, especially with some modifications for a friend with some serious food allergies. Tacos are traditional and small, but your can get as many as you want and you can mix and match to try a few kinds or get multiples of your fave! Would rate this higher if they had more than 2 waiters per shift. One of the servers was also acting as host. We had to flag the server down to take our food order after over 30 minutes and his response was he wasn't coming over because the kitchen was backed up (which wasn't communicated to us). On top of this, the tacos were pretty mid, nothing crazy. I will say the watermelon margarita was very good and def a highlight. I'd come back just for drinks and guac next time! I still feel on the fence about leaving a negative review because our waitress was great but to be real, it was the worst mexican food I have ever had. Worse than chipotle, if you know what I mean. Am very disappointed with the fact that I ordered the $30 trio fajita with steak, shrimp, and chicken and it was mostly onion and there was literally 1 piece of steak in the mix. We got our toddler a cheese tortilla with some chicken on it and the chicken was pink and raw and she ended up throwing up in the car :( the drinks were good and the service was good but I am sorry, I do not recommend this place at all. read more

Lunchtime and search for "shrimp tacos" brought us to this place. It's a pretty nice looking restaurant in a beautiful historic building right near the east side of Boston Common. The home made chips and guac was top notch, and all the tacos we tried were very good. Go easy on the lime, because there is already a good amount of sourness from that beautiful red-purple slaw. Vibes feel very artificial and corporate, even though they're going for an upscale chill tropic ambiance. Overall nothing was terrible (though some additional training for the host couldn't hurt...), but nothing memorable either. I wanted to try this place for a while and finally made it on a Sunday night. There wasn't a ton of staff working so it took a bit to place our orders even though our server was working as the host, bartender, and server until other staff showed up. She was doing a great job as the only person on the floor for a while and was pleasant to speak to while we were debating what to try. While it's cute that everything (for the most part) is made with blue corn tortilla, the food was really just one note. After all the hype surrounding this place, our meal was very underwhelming. Everything tasted the same and nothing was spicy or had any heat to it, not even the two different hot sauces/salsas on the table to add to your food. We started with a pitcher of Spicy Cucumber Margaritas that was tasty with a good jalapeño flavor but absolutely heat at all. The only spicy part was the Tajin rim. We got the Mexican corn and chips with guac to start. Chips were crunchy, fresh, and delicious, which was great as the signature thing. The guac was a good portion and well seasoned but heavy on the cilantro. The Mexican Corn was good but so salty. For our meals we got a quesabirria quesadilla, chicken taco, sweet potato and bean taco, and crispy fish taco. The quesabirria was soggy, missing the griddled crisp of a quesadilla which was the entire point of ordering it that way. If I wanted something that could be soggy, I would have just ordered a birria taco. The crispy fish taco was good but didn't taste much different than anything else we ate. The chicken taco was juicy but again, one note of flavor. Best taco of the order was the sweet potato and bean but maybe that's because it had some additional flavor to it compared to everything else and had some spice level to it before adding the salsa. Shout out to the guys working the line you can see from the chefs counter, they clearly have a great attention to detail when they're putting the dishes together. Every thing we ordered was presented beautifully and simply even if the food itself was underwhelming. All in all, I would skip this place for the price point and the fact that it just doesn't live up to the hype. The blue corn chips are great but that was about it. I would not put this as an honorable mention for taco places to try in Boston so I'm not sure how it is still on so many "best of" lists for the city. read more

For drinks my friend got the watermelon margarita and I got the their taco azul mockarita. My mocktail was good but extremely sweet. I was also turned off about how they were both the same price even though mine didn't even have any alcohol. The blue corn chips and guacamole were good but nothing special. We managed to get a table but had to promise we would be done in an hour and a half, when the next reservation was due. Our server was delightful. The food, while tasty, was tiny. The margs were good but super sour and kind of weak compared other places in Boston. The rims on the glasses are pre-made- you can't get a salt or sugar rim- it's the pre-made crusted on tajin or nothing. They also don't have soda other than the little glass bottles. The guac was strange- it almost tasted meaty? But it did say it was vegetarian on the menu?? The Mexican corn tasted literally like the corn was from a can- the flavor was nice but the corn was way overcooked and mushy. The tacos were mid- but the carnitas taco was just plain old bad. I was disappointed to not find chips and salsa on the menu as that is my favorite appetizer, however the guacamole was fresh and tasty. We each ordered the shrimp al pastor and quesabirria tacos. The birria was good, but the Al pastor was nothing to write home about. The heat and decadence was there, but it was missing a bright element. One of the worst customer service experiences I've had--and I never even ate here. I accidentally made a reservation through Resy at this restaurant in the wrong state. When I realized the mistake (an hour before the reservation, because I thought it was local to me, not 4.5 hours away), I immediately tried to call to apologize and release the table. Except--this restaurant doesn't even list a phone number. Really? What kind of restaurant makes it impossible for a guest to call them? I reached out to both Resy and the restaurant right away. Resy shrugged and said they couldn't help. The restaurant finally replied to my email saying they'd "be nice" and charge me $75 instead of $150. For what? I never showed up, never ate, never inconvenienced them beyond opening the table back up. They had every chance to seat someone else. To me, that's not hospitality--it's a cash grab. Honest mistakes happen, but instead of showing any understanding, this place decided to pocket money and lose a potential customer for life. I travel often, and I guarantee I'll never dine here. If this is how they treat people before they even walk in the door, I can only imagine how little they care once you're actually at the table. This is a lovely space in a convenient location. We stopped for an appetizer and margaritas. Expecting a basket of warm, freshly made chips, we were disappointed by a small plate of chips that tasted store bought. The queso was good but the salsa is served in tiny, 3 inch squirt bottles. You have to literally squirt the salsa on each chip! ‍. The margarita was not well made (they have only one brand of tequila).
