Me and my friends came here after work and had a 5pm reservation and were seated right away. There was maybe 1 other table here. It is a cute spot, but just a heads up that the entrance is a little hard to find- I thought I had walked in through the back door. The restaurant is actually located in the public alley, not directly on Gloucester Street. The food was really good. I am obsessed with their rice and beans. Everyone seemed to love what they ordered! However, Im taking away two stars because of our service and our waitress. When we sat down, she casually asked, "Can I get you started with chips and guac?" At pretty much every Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, that phrasing implies it is complimentary. At no point did she mention that the guac was an added charge. We later found out we were charged $16 per guac, yes because she brought over TWO (!!) which totaled over $30, which felt really misleading. If something is meant to be an appetizer you are paying for, I expect it to be framed as, "Would you like to order any appetizers?" not presented as a default and free starter. That part left a sour taste in my mouth. I would consider coming back for the food, but I would be much more cautious ordering anything they recommend. read more

I've heard this is the longest running Mexican restaurant in Boston so it's been on my list forever. It was even more unassuming than I expected; a literal hole in the wall. The hibiscus spritz was enormous and delicious. So many interesting dishes, a lot of cactus, that you don't often see on menus. We sat at the bar and the bartender was the type of local friendly bartender who'd worked at a bunch of other bars in the area and could give great recommendations. After deciding what to eat, the food came out right on time- perfect spacing between ordering, appetizer, and meal. If you want a pleasurable, quick but not rushed, and fun dining experience, this is the place to go! The restaurant itself is colorfully decorated with traditional hispanic artwork creating an immersive night from the moment you step into the secret restaurant. In addition to the music and lively energy of the customers, the atmosphere was very exciting. Came here for lunch. As most reviews noted it's not a lot of food given the price. The food itself was delicious! The fajitas could have added a bit of spice to it. It was begging for some heat! Overall it was good. We washed it all down with a Sangria and a Diet Coke. Which was good. The service was a bit rough. Place got packed and only had two servers. Definitely need to get more servers in place! The place itself it's cool! It's basically underground down an alley way. Super cool entrance! Was excited to try this staple that's been here for over 40 years but left disappointed. We were sat in the very back room, talk about nobody puts baby in the corner! I found it strange instead of putting a big group in the room they decided to put a bunch of 2, and 4 person tables? Once we sat, small room was loud, go to order La Sucia..."oh sorry we can't make that drink tonight." Ah alright, generic margarita it is then. Go to order our main dishes, "ah we are out of the Puerco Adobado" ok how about Carne Asada "we have that but are out of the enchiladas." So I surrendered and just got it without the enchiladas. The Puerco Adobado is listed as their signature dish made since 1972, somehow ran out of it on a Friday at 7pm. Call my expectation rude or unreasonable but I figure if you've been doing this since 1972 you'd know how much you need in terms of supplies for a full weekends service. Overall just an overall mediocre experience and it wasn't even cheap at ~$125/person. Pass for me on what I've been told to be a neighborhood gem. read more

What for? Still riding on the coat tails of Covid fees 5 years later, so tacky. If you are hungry and in Back Bay you could find a better spot blindfolded. read more

The first time I went to Casa Romero I couldn't find the door because it is so unassuming from outside, but once inside you are greeted with a lively environment, fun colors, and lovely employees. The food is also delicious - we started with chips and salsa, ate the al pastor tacos and finished with the churros, all of which were excellent. Can't wait to come back! read more

We arrived Friday night at 7:30pm with a reservation and had to wait briefly before being seated. It looked crowded so would probably recommend making a reservation for weekend nights. The interior is cozy, large, and decorations are festive and fun! Service was good. For food, we ordered the guac because so many people recommended it on Yelp. We were pretty underwhelmed as it was just fine. We also ordered the caramelos, chicken enchiladas, and al pastor tacos. Everything was fine but nothing special. I'd to preface this by saying that I did enjoy my experience at Casa Romero and the food was good. There are a few things here or there that took this from a 4 to a 3 to me. That being said, I would definitely recommend this restaurant given how scarce sit down mexicqn is in the area and my entree and drinks were awesome. 1. Price inconsistency. The menu prices floating around online and even the prices in the restaurant were wildly different. By wildly, I mean I saw about 13.50 for chips, salsa, and guacamole online, in person the menu said 17. Margaritas in the main menu said 20 each, on our table with specialty cocktails it said 18. Even two menus in front of me did not have the same price. 2. Food price and quantity. Chips, salsa, guacamole. Chips were cold plain and simple. 17$ for cold chips and good salsa and guacamole is not worth it to me. I would skip them if I go next time. There are local places where you can grab a to go container of fresh chips and equally as impressive salsa and guacamole and save 5$ too. I will say the other appetizers might do better in this area, but it's hard to pass up chips and salsa. My entree the cochinita pibil was awesome and at 25$ I'd get it again. Portions for the pork were perfectly fine. I feel like I could have used more beans and rice. Every other place usually dumps a truck load on the plate, so it was jarring when I had to ration my usage per tortilla. The staff was very friendly and helpful with any questions on the menu. Cool location and entrance. It would be really cool bring someone here as a "locals-only hidden gem." It is, however, not a gem. (1) How is the quality of the food? -'Antojito' appetizer quesadilla was fine. A basic quesadilla, too similar to what I make for myself at home. -The mole enchiladas made me sad to eat. One of my favorite foods, this was the worst attempt I have ever seen. The mole sauce was watery, like soup, with little flavor. Two microscopic enchiladas and small portions of beans and rice. I was still hungry after. (2) How is the ambiance? -The ambiance could be very cool. It's a hidden little spot with Mexican inspired art and decorations. But none of the tiles are actual talavera and the murals look like Tex-Mex cartoons. -There was a sewage smell. Certainly a temporary plumbing issue but it was part of my experience. (3) How does it feel to spend money here? -It costs extra for chips and salsa. -It costs extra to split a check. This information is somewhat hidden and this practice is mildly predatory. -The food and drinks are expensive for small portions with disappointing quality. (4) How was the service -Service was good, nothing to complain about. I wanted to love this place. Cool location, cool ambiance, a menu with real mexican cuisine. Not easy to find, but after our 2nd attempt we found it! We weren't thinking it would be in an alley! The bartender told us this is the 1st Mexican restaurant in New England. Well, alright then! It's a must try! I started off with the Spicy Pineapple Margarita and never looked back. They use fresh ingredients, never a pre-made margarita mix, which is probably why it was so yummy. It was a weekend, so service was a little slow, but we didn't mind. Sorry for the quality of the photos. This is the second time coming here. Love the decor and atmosphere of the place. It is loud and energetic, so it may be hard to have a quiet conversation with someone. We found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to try it out. The menu online is very different from what the menu is now post covid. The menu now is small but enough veggie options. I ordered the following: - Chips/Salsa and Guacamole: loved it. Loved the salsa and the guacamole. Perfectly seasoned and spiced. - Vegetarian Fajitas: the vegetables were actually seasoned well and were delicious. It comes with 3 tortillas, which I finished right away. The combination of rice, beans, different sauces, and the veggies was perfect. The restaurant is a bit hidden and the entrance is through an ally. This place is truly a hole in the wall and almost hard to find, but once you're inside the restaurant is bigger than I expected. I recommend getting a reservation as it's a very popular spot. We started with chips, guac and salsa. We got the enchiladas mole and fish tacos. Both were delicious. I got a spicy margarita which was a little too spicy for my liking due to the number of jalapeños they put in it, but that's personal preference. It lacked so much flavor and the chicken could not have been more dry. Tried adding a salt; couldn't fix.
