Skip this place and head to Zocalo instead. The service is awful, and the food is not that good and is overpriced to boot.
The scoop: Our party of 5 waited about 10-15 minutes for a table on Sunday night (no reservation and on BU move in weekend, so this was expected). We got to our table, and sat there for about 15 minutes with no contact, before a busboy dropped us off a small bowl of chips and salsa without a word (chips were fine, salsa was too spicy IMO). Our table promptly devoured them in a matter of seconds, and tried to flag someone else down to get a refill to no avail. Around minute 20-25, the waitress finally came up to take our orders with no real apology, which wasn't cool... I realize it was packed, but come on, it only takes 2 seconds to say "I'll be right with you". Because of this, our drinks were ordered at the same time as our meal, although at least the drinks came out first... my frozen mango margarita barely tasted mangoey which was a disappointment (at least there was definitely tequila in there). We waited another 20 minutes until our food arrived (fortunately we were able to ask our waitress for more chips and salsa while we had her at our table).
I got the Pollo Veracruzano (boneless chicken breast cooked with tomato, capers, mushrooms, almonds, raisins and white wine sauce), which was unimpressive. The chicken was actually the highlight of the dish, pounded flat and grilled with a nice charcoaly flavor, but the sauce wasn't anything better than I could have made myself (in fact I have made a similar sauce that was better), didn't have mushrooms or raisins, and had some sort of unpleasant spicy kick I was not expecting and was not listed on the menu (other dishes did specify "mild/medium/hot" but there was no listing for this dish, and with these ingredients you would not automatically expect any spiciness). I'm usually a sucker for mole and would have chosen a mole dish to begin with, but the menu listed it as "spicy" so I stayed away... but I tried the boy's mole and it was less spicy than my own Veracruzano sauce (WTF mates?!), very chocolatey though and not very complex (Zocalo's mole is miles ahead IMO).
The refried black beans that came with were decently tasty, as was the rice, although they really don't make it abundantly clear it's cooked with chicken broth which could be a problem for veggies (it's listed once on the menu at the bottom, but should really be highlighted). Portion size was decent, I was able to have a small lunch the next day from my leftovers (which should be standard for a $17 meal anyways). Service did not get better, it took forever to get our check and then forever to have it paid... we arrived here at 7 and didn't leave til 9, it's a good thing we didn't have anywhere to be afterwards or we would have been extra pissed.
The place itself is decently cute, especially with the patio (although the sound bounces off the walls like crazy so be prepared not to hear your dining companions if you sit inside), but the service and unimpressive food with high prices, combined with excellent alternatives like Zocalo, make me not want to return. read more
