I was there with my two brothers last week before a kings game We had a great dinner. The service was excellent. We get to the arena and I realized, I didn't have my wallet!!! Well, I couldn't even get on the plane the next morning if I didn't get my ID, plus I had about 300 bucks of walking around money! In a panic, I run back to the place, and it was at the front desk. Sol Agave took me out for three days. I don't even remember the last time I had food poisoning. It wasn't ER-level bad, but as a foodie who lives for flavor, it was devastating to have to live off of saltines and Gatorade for three. Whole. Days. Also, wow, San Clemente runs on a different clock. I don't know if it's just the beach or what, but service was so slow in that specific "I'm out of my tax bracket" kind of way. CHIPS WITH SALSA & FRIJOLES: 5/5. Generally not a frijoles person, but this one was good. BIRRIA TACOS: 5/5. Flavor was good, smoky. PORK BELLY: 3/5. Dry. Tortillas & sauces saved it. OCTOPUS: 1/5. This was definitely the culprit, as my partner and I shared every dish... except this one. I suspect it was the salad, since the octopus was fully cooked, and most food poisoning cases are from mishandled produce, which seems like a failure at a very basic level. read more

I called in an order, and the person who answered the phone was very unprofessional and clearly not paying attention. She kept putting me on hold without saying anything or letting me know what was happening. I was told the order would be ready in 15-20 minutes, so I drove over about 30 minutes later to pick it up. When I arrived, the restaurant was not busy. We waited another 15 minutes before someone finally told us the order had never even been put in. That is really poor customer service. If someone is calling in an order, the least they can do is actually take the order correctly or communicate if there is an issue. It was a complete waste of time and very frustrating. read more

Don't go. We are locals and live very close and haven't been in years because the ownership had changed and it was awful. We went last Tuesday because another local place was full. Said let's go have a margarita, we sat down with two other friends and we were the only four people in the restaurant on a taco Tuesday had two Cadillac margaritas and went home. Pretty much blacked out, bartender had to have done something funky, we drink margaritas every day and the other couple we were with said they said the same thing they went home and the next morning when they woke up, they had to recount what happened the night before. Two margaritas in two hours, this meathead bartender while we were there over an hour and a half didn't even ask us if we wanted to order food, served us two Cadillac margaritas and we were hammered. This place is in a little plaza like area. It was quite lively with people. The waiters were nice and the place had TVs. The tvs were tuned to March Madness & baseball, so it was good times. We only came here for drinks. I love margaritas and saw the margarita flight. It was a little expensive ($26?) but I ordered it anyway. They do give you free chips, salsa, & bean dip. I was happy for that because I needed something to soak up all my margaritas! My favorite margarita was the Tamarindo. I thought the others were just ok. Authentic and gourmet Mexican food. I've never had better. The steak was juicy, flavorful, of high quality and perfectly grilled. The Carnitas were tender and incredibly tasty. There was plenty of room around our table and the ambience was conducive for conversation. Out waiter was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and food preparation. Gotta love an impromptu meet up with friends on a Saturday night for prime time dinner time in DTSC! As always (and as it should be) Avenida Del Mar was hopping!!! Love seeing downtown come alive with contagious happy vibes from locals (and visitors) with the same intentions...a good time!!! After pregaming with a few cocktails and wine at home, we Uber'd downtown. The gang decided to just do walk ups into a few restos to see if we could get lucky with a table for our party of 6 sans reservations. LOL. Third time's a charm because we we ended up here at Sol Agave, and I'm so glad we did! This was my first time at this location (have been to the one in SJC many moons ago). We were welcomed by super friendly hosts (always plus points for me!) and seated quickly inside! Our sweet server, Emma, took great care of us! She took our food and drink orders and right away and before we knew it, the chips and salsa were already on the table! First things first... - their Guacamole Sampler is a MUST (wow, just wow!!!) - Mango Margaritas (w/ Tajin please) really hit the spot! The fresh slice of mango in there was crunchy and sweet, yum! My toxic trait when eating Mexican food is always getting full from the chips/salsa/guac, so my husband and I decided to share their Famous Carnitas (w/ corn tortilla), and their Taquitos Al Gusto (w/ short ribs), which were the perfect choices for us! I don't regret trying this place but we will not be back, and I wouldn't recommend it. The service was so subpar - our waiter barely checked on us once. We would have loved to get more wine, or also the check at the end of the meal - I had to flag down someone else walking by, because our waiter seemingly just completely forgot about us, despite us sitting right in the middle of a busy walkway. The food was very overpriced and over salted. The $40 steak tacos I ordered were build-it-yourself style, and came with a whopping 5 small strips of steak, two of which were very fatty. My husband called the restaurant a few days prior and made a reservation for a party of 7. There is street parking available and we ended up parking a block away on a Sunday night. It didn't seem too busy but I can see it getting crowded during peak times. We were seated within 5 minutes of checking in. The inside restaurant was smaller than what I was expecting but it was lively. The staff and service were very friendly and they made sure we were taken care of the entire night. Bathrooms are available outside on the side of the restaurant but you will have to ask for their code. The food was amazing! 5/5 for the chile Colorado as the meat was tender in a flavorful sauce. I love the fresh tortilla chips and bean dip that was complimentary with the meal. The drinks were also very good and I shared a margarita flight with my husband. We both really loved the tamarindo margarita the best so we ordered a full sized one later on. I'm in LOVE! We came here during Memorial Day weekend, during prime time dinner hours and we got seated right away. I love that there's indoor and outdoor seating options, as well as bar seating. The ambiance is classy with casual, somewhat fancy vibes and there's TV for entertainment. It caters to a variety of crowds - groups, family, dates, GNO. I love that the menu isn't overwhelming and it offers a lot of classic Mexican food options. Loved the light and crispy chips in the complimentary chips and salsa and beans that they offered. Our entrees, tacos de hongo and carnitas, were amazing! The meats were so tender and filled with flavor! The beans and rice paired perfectly with it and were also equally delish! Parker was great - totally hospitable, gave plenty of attention, was efficient and just had an overall positive energy and vibes. Please note that this is in the corner of one of the main streets in San Clemente - there's parking but patience may be required during busy hours. I'll start by saying I called to make sure they still did happy hour, and was told every day from 2-5:30 except holidays. Great, it was December 6- not a holiday, right??! When we arrived, I asked for the happy hour menu and was told since there was a street festival going on in, they did not have happy hour. I told them I called and was told just no holiday, and the bartender (also Our server) rudely responded saying it was a holiday. Ok, whatever. The prices here are insane, and the food tastes like it's from a can. They used to have the BEST beans and salsa. This was Rosarita Refried beans. No joke. We ordered holiday cocktails ($22!), shrimp taquito appetizer, and the carnitas plate. The carnitas came with TWO tortillas. WTF? We asked for an extra plate and you would have thought we asked for a kidney. Terrible service and food. I'd been going there since they moved into SC. This is not just a dish, it is a moment. Crispy edges that give you that beautiful crackle, then inside, tender, rich, almost melting. The balance is everything. You have acidity from the salsa, freshness from the garnish, and that deep, indulgent flavor of the pork. It is thoughtful. It is generous. It is exactly what you want. Now the taquiza. A celebration on a plate. Three tacos, each one vibrant, layered, and alive. The tortillas warm and soft, holding everything together like they should. I'm a regular at Sol Agave San Clemente. First off, Alex, one of the partners and chefs, is incredibly hospitable. Every time I come he always offers the table tequila shots! We sometimes have to insist that we're too toasty to have another drink! The chili verde is incredible, super moist and well seasoned. I wrap the food in a flour tortilla and it's delicious. The butter cake (pictured) is one of the best desserts I've ever had. I wish I were kidding lol read more

Unfortunately had to change my review based on my recent experience here. I like this small chain, the food and service. Not so good at this location, but the food and drinks were always nice. We went here on Saturday and wanted to seat outdoor in their courtyard, it was my husband's birthday. The hostess was on the phone, wanted to give us a table and get back to her conversation, got annoyed that we wanted a different table, she was giving us bad ones and ultimatum-s. It was colder (way colder than on the street) on their patio, shady and the heat lamp wasn't working. We were ready to put jackets on. I asked for the Happy Hour menu and it was different to the previous one that is still on their site. They changed ownership, the waitress told us, never good! The new HH menu is minimal, not that good - Mashed Chorizo Taco-s seriously? Good-bye to Calamari, Street Tacos, Flautas, Margarita Flight! And other goodies. Sad to say, I will never go to a Sol Agave again! This used to be one of our favorite places and we would frequent it about --2 month. However service started dropping off about a year ago. A few time half way through the meal we never saw a server until after we were done. Some of the dishes and margaritas are still great, but the last 2 times we ordered ribs, they were like beef jerky, dry, and inedible. Not as authentic as we thought it would be. More commercialized taste and very .... Bland or just not Mexican/Latino/Hispanic flavors. I ordered the Camerones mojo. The hubby order Tierra y Mar. The drinks were also not good. Service was great. The manager sat us quickly. Sergio was excellent. Only issue was we ordered the shrimp taquitos and it never came. Pretty sure it was not put in. But we're fine with it now. It would have been more money for most likely food we did not like. Place is very pretty. Everything is clean. Staff is super friendly. I have four stars because of the service. For me... this was pretty close to Acapulco tasting food. I did like the Camerones (shrimp) al mojo. Maybe we just chose the wrong plates. But then again I did not see any other Mexican/Latino/Hispanics inside. The presentation of the food was pretty. The drinks were not good as well. I ordered the Housewife Martini. It tasted a bit like expired juice with alcohol. The hubby had a San Clemente Old Fashioned. It gave him a headache. Not sure if low grade alcohol is being used in more expensive bottles. I met an out of town friend here, so it was a first time for both of us. The restaurant is beautiful and ambiance is great, got there before the crowd showed up. It's a little loud in the main area by the bar when there's a crowd in there. Service was great, very nice and accommodating with changes to our order. I had the Sugar Cane Filets which were very good however the chipotle sauce was a little spicey for me but I would still get it again. The table salsa is very good as well and their guac! We split the famous Butter Cake for dessert, let me tell you it does not disappoint! It is wonderful with the mild crunchy outter part perfectly blended with vanilla ice cream and the mousse and the cinnamon is not overpowering. Amazing :) We both had a great time! read more

These good reviews are crazy. Kitchen staff can't even cook eggs. After we showed the waitress the rock solid yolks on our huevos, and the girlfriend's rock solid sunnysides, the kitchen sent out two more eggs in bowl without any dressings. I said "oh, this is like an experiential thing" so I played clean up for chef and scraped the cilantro, seasoning, and sauce off my burnt eggs and onto the new ones and reconstructed the meal. Had a wonderful experience here this weekend! Parking is always a little tricky in San Clemente, but Sol Agave's location is really easy to walk to from pretty much any street or public parking. I reserved our table, expecting a lunch rush on a holiday weekend, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that there was ample seating both inside and outside, and the wonderful staff member offered to seat us immediately. The food and drinks were absolutely delicious. We started off with guac and chips -- the salsa and dip are SO good -- and our entrees were out super fast. I would usually include a picture with my review, but I was so excited to eat my ceviche, I forgot to document its beauty for posterity that's got to be a first for me. We ended up here after finding a two hour wait at South of Nick's. They were able to seat us immediately for a Saturday night so we couldn't pass it up. Our server was fast, friendly and attentive throughout the meal. If it wasn't for the friendly staff this would be a 1 or 2 star review. Unfortunately the overall experience really fell short. We were seated inside where the ambiance was lacking for the price of the dishes. It didn't help that an overhead vent smelled strongly of a public restroom. Our server recommended the tamarindo margarita but it was pretty mid especially if you're comparing it to the one at South of Nick's. Chips were served with a tasty salsa and beans so we had high hopes of a getting a good, authentic meal. The biggest letdown was the "newly added" aguachiles. It was genuinely one of the most disappointing dishes I've had in a long time. It was essentially raw sea bass sitting in a green chili salsa that had absolutely no taste beyond salt water. I'd almost consider it false advertising because it wasn't an aquachile dish at all. We didn't have the heart to send it back, but it was incredibly frustrating to waste $20 on it. Thankfully our entrees were decent and helped salvage the meal a bit. While I appreciate the wonderful service, the prices here are comparable to Nick's, but for half the experience. I would highly recommend exploring other Mexican restaurants in the area before trying this spot especially if you're used to consuming good Mexican food frequently. read more

The food is great, but the service sucked. We went on Mother's Day to be fair, so it was a busier day. I had to ask twice to turn on the heater. Our server brought me my tea and never came back to take our order. I had to ask for lemon and sugar bc he forgot to bring it. We had to hunt him down to take our order, he never came back to see if we needed anything once we got our food. We needed a refill on our drinks, we asked 3 people for water. We needed a refill on our chips. It seemed like he had too much going on and he was overwhelmed. We had to ask for the bill we had to ask for boxes.. our needs were not anticipated. They brought my hot food out without my tortillas and it took another 15min for the tortillas to come out, by that time my food wasn't warm anymore (it was cold out). How could it take 45 min to get food? Sat right near the bar and it took along to get drinks. Yuck, flat beer. The food was awful. Grilled romaine that wasn't grilled? Yellow-white lettuce? What happened to this place?! My husband and I have noticed a HUGE decline in service and food quality over the last fews months. About a month ago we sat at the bar for 15 minutes and nobody acknowledged our presense so we left. Today we went back to give this place another shot. Sat at the bar and had the WORST service. We sat at the bar but the bartender would disappear....nowhere in sight. Water glasses empty as well as my husband's beer. We ordered food and it took a very long time to get despite the fact the restaurant was not busy. Food was OVER salted and just not good. Dishes we had ordered numerous time in the past tasted different (not in a good way.) Noticed sign in the window saying a change in ownership....hope the new owners figure out the issue. read more
