Went tonight and ordered the bulgogi nachos that are advertised as "homemade nachos"...there is nothing homemade about them tbh. I would recommended reducing the amount of tomatoes and increasing the amount of pickled jalapeños. But I did appreciate the amount of bulgogi though, it was quite a lot. Then on to the fried chicken with scallions that never reached my table, and instead went to a different table--where they ate one piece and notified the staff (who were busy on their phones) that it was not their order. We had to ask to be served as staff members were just walking around. I get that it was slow, but come on. Waitress's attitude was bad. No smile. Lacked energy. So perfectly salted and hot! I then moved on to the irresistible Korean fried chicken wings! These were EXCELLENT. The dredge was so thin, but SO CRISPY and even made them fluffy. Always a good time at Sojuba! We went here on Halloween around 9:30pm for dinner. There was a bit of a line but it didn't take too long to get in. Food was great - I ordered the spicy kalbi chicken with rice & the hubs ordered the beef. Both were great! Others ordered the scallion pancake, fish stew, and bibimbap. After a few visit over the last 5 years, I think my opinion of slipping quality solidified. Food: On my most recent visit, we ordered the rice cakes, a medium order of wings, and a soju pitcher. The rice cakes were overly sweet to us and didn't blend when with the spice that tried to pack in. The wings were the best part of the meal but they genuinely used to be much better. These wings were light on sauce and were a bit dry and overcooked. Lastly, the soju pitcher was just sugar water and not worth $30. SOJUba is an interesting combination of Korean restaurant, (kinda fusiony but they do have what I'd call a proper Korean menu), bar, a little bit lounge, and a dash of sports bar. And somehow that all works together fine! The food and drink prices were quite reasonable for Boston and Fenway in particular. This place is solid for a night out. They got my favorite Korean beer, Cass. The aftertaste of that beer is second to none. Definitely recommend the Yogurt Soju to share. Sweet & savory 5/5 -Suntory highball: my first highball but it might not be a fair rating but 5/5! Refreshing and sweet. -Soju and beer make somek (sp) like a Korean jaggerbomb but with soju. Refreshing and one too many will have you kissing the floor. -Now best for last........ SPICY SNAIL. The absolutely showstopper of the evening. If you're looking for some delicious Korean food in Boston, this is not the place to go. It's very much so just Korean bar food, mid at best & oftentimes, the food is not served to you hot, usually warm-ish cold. Do not have high expectations if you order any food from here. To be honest, just stick to the soju and you'll have a blast. Definitely recommend this place for big parties or even just a small group that's not looking to go out to the club. I don't mind a little marbled fat but when your biting into chunks of fat just to get to the meat, the gelatinous texture from the fat makes the dish less appealing. I felt wasteful as I just couldn't kill it despite being hungry. They didn't skimp. Just wished it wasn't so thick and fatty! I ordered the seafood pancake for $17. It's usually my youngest son's must have dish. And since I'm traveling for work, seeing it on the menu was a must have for me since I miss him! Sadly, This one arrived a bit soggy. The soy sauce spilled as the lid melted flat and the pancake was too salty for me. I ordered a bottle of water for $2 and received none. FOOD: The food was OK. We got Bulgogi Nachos and Tteokbokki with cheese. The nachos are not layered. The chips go first then the nacho cheese, meat, and veggie toppings go on top of that, so once you get through the toppings on top, you're left with dry chips that you either eat plain or don't do anything with. We used to be regulars at SOJUba, celebrating birthdays and enjoying what we thought was one of the most fun atmospheres locally. But after our last few visits, we're officially done. This place has gone way downhill. The food quality has dropped significantly, the service is incredibly slow, and the staff seems completely uninterested in making your experience enjoyable. And to top it off, they auto-select a 25% tip to the bill on the palm pilots--without asking. Let me start with the food: I used to love their cheese corn, but the last few times we've been here, it's been nothing but disappointment. It's bland, the portions are smaller, and it's clear they've cut corners. It tastes tired, the flavors are completely off, and it feels like they're just throwing ingredients together just to get it out the door. Honestly, this is not the same place we used to enjoy. What was once a highlight has now become something I'd rather pass on. But the biggest letdown this time? The Korean chicken wings--they were awful. The wings weren't crispy at all. In fact, they were soggy and limp, with no crunch whatsoever. And the sauce? The spicy version was overly sweet, with none of the savory depth you'd expect from Korean wings. It lacked that perfect balance of spicy and savory. They were a total disappointment, and definitely not worth the price. When we arrived, we were seated immediately, which wasn't a good sign in itself--the place was dead. On a Saturday night, no less. When the server finally showed up, they were dressed in sweats. A dress code for servers clearly doesn't exist here anymore. Not only was the staff's appearance sloppy, but the service itself was painfully slow. There was a total lack of enthusiasm or professionalism. It's like they couldn't care less about delivering a decent dining experience. Then came the bill. I've been to plenty of places that suggest tips, but this is the first time I've ever experienced a place that automatically selects a 25% tip--without asking. And not just on the food, but the total, including tax. I don't tip on tax, and I don't appreciate having a tip forced on me like that. They shove the palm pilot in your face, expecting you to pay without questioning it. Be careful and always review your bill carefully before paying. I caught the automatic tip selection, and it felt completely dishonest of them to pull something like that without any prior warning. What really sealed the deal for us, though, was how empty the place was--on a Saturday night. This used to be a packed, lively spot, buzzing with energy. Now, it was dead. That alone says a lot about how far this place has fallen. If a restaurant can't even fill up on the weekend, you know they've lost their touch. That said, I do want to mention that the bouncers are always nice and professional, which is the only positive thing I can still say about this place. They're friendly, welcoming, and seem to be one of the few people actually doing their job well. Food is bad, the service is worse, and the automatic tip selection feels so dishonest. However, the cocktail hits EVERY TIME! especially because they come with popsicles! In terms of food, I would recommend sharing plates, especially for the tteokbokki, noodles, and Korean fried chicken. The entrees are bar food that compliment the drinks.
