I always have a great time at SoJust events. The group is extremely welcoming and goes out of their way to make sure newcomers feel involved. After attending 3 SoJust events, you become a "SoJust Star", which means you wear a "change agent" badge to SoJust events and help work the room to make sure everyone feels welcome. The result is a group that feels like the antithesis of a click. Last night, I attending Connecting for Justice Open House and had some great conversations with other attendees. At the open house (hosted at the ground floor of Lir) they have a job board with listings that attendees can take home and a section to leave literature for others to take about events your hosting. I left literature on Walk MS, MS Challenge Walk, and the MS stairclimb at the John Hancock center. Quite a few people asked me about the events and seemed genuinely interested in attending. In addition to the normal name badges at networking events, they also provide "I'm looking for" and "Ask me about" badges that you can fill out. The badges help add to conversation throughout the night. And just in case you still are worried about meeting people, they have a bingo sheet filled with descriptions like "looking to volunteer". "Likes karaoke", "Is a radical", etc. You can walk up to a group and start a conversation by asking what description you can write their name down for on the bingo sheet. Prizes are even given to everyone who fills out the whole bingo sheet. (I happily walked away from the event with a free pass to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum as my prize for completing the bingo sheet.) SoJust IS exactly what the Boston area needs. It has provided me with the absolutely invaluable opportunity to meet and befriend like-minded people-- intense environmentalists/bike enthusiasts, AmeriCorp peeps, feminists, queer activists, artists and musicians, Scrabblerousers, an applied physicist with a love of knitting, and many, many more. Far from being yet another clique, SoJust is genuinely diverse, with people from all walks of life, with two commonalities: they care about social justice, and they're sincerely interested in getting to know you, whomever you are. People are open, friendly, and fun. The events are well-planned, and are only getting better. The organizer, Robbie, is fantastic, as is Hilary, co-organizer. I'm the kind of slightly socially phobic person who dreads cocktail parties, mixers, and meeting new people in general, but at SoJust, a shared orientation about the issues you hold dear to you makes it so much easier to put yourself out there. I've never seen people have as much fun meeting strangers (and friends) as at the most recent event-- drinks at the Enormous Room. SoJust is getting press and momentum-- if you fit the bill, come be part of one of the chillest, nicest, least exclusive clubs in town. read more

I have met many like minded people in this group. It's a lot of fun to do things like Recess for Justice or Billiards for Justice. This is a great networking opportunity for people. There are people who have intterests that may not be on the forefront of people's minds, but they bring it to the table none the less & you get to learn all about it. This is just a really great group that is trying to promote whatever cause you believe in & spread the word. read more

SoJust puts a LOT of time and energy into ensuring that its events are welcoming and inclusive. If you want to meet people--for networking, to make new friends, or if you're new to the area--this is one of the least intimidating, most enjoyable ways to do it. There is an ethos of inclusion, and it's OK and encouraged to go talk to new people and for people to come greet you--SoJust is the "anti-clique" social gathering. If you live in the Boston area, have an interest in any kind of progressive issue, and are wanting to meet other folks for networking, job opportunities, or just to have fun, this meetup group is perfect. SoJust is run by some amazing down to earth and committed folks who get that doing justice work requires not just hard work and dedication but also working together across issues and a social life- where people matter as much as politics do. SoJust events are all over the city and include a range of activities from cocktails to camping to bowling and the best part is that they are so EASY. I am sure you have had experiences in attending events where it feels hard to "get in the mix" - not so here. The crowd is diverse, friendly, and very welcoming. I went to my first SoJust event alone, and was super nervous that I'd have nothing to talk about, and would end up a wallflower. I was there for about 2 minutes before I was absorbed into my first really engaging conversation. Everyone there has a different role, but is ultimately on the same team, making it really easy to expand your horizons and learn about areas outside of your own. People were SUPER friendly, and even more interesting and engaging. I'll definitely be back, and if you're reading this, don't question it anymore. Just GO! No one is pushy about their views, or solicitous. It was great. read more
