Was visiting Boston and decided to check out Copley Square. What a nice little experience here. There are many things to do and see here. Lots of people wandering around. Feels a bit touristy. I say it's a great place to hang out and feel the city of Boston. Great place to kill time and take in the great city of Boston. There are great looking buildings throughout. Feels like you step back in time to the old days. If you are visiting Boston, make sure you stop by Copley Square and take in the sceneries. read more

Beautiful square, wonderful architecture, you really feel like you are in the middle of the city. When we stopped by, they had a Farmer's Market/food street fair so it was fun to check out the goodies, it made the place even more lively and animated! It's named after John Singleton Copley, the Boston born American painter. The architecture is mixed style wise, but the Trinity Church stands out in charm. A bit of movie trivia: parts (beginning) of "The Serpent and the Rainbow" was shot here. If you have some time, walk across to the Boston Public Library, it's so worth visiting while you are in the area! read more

Ever felt like a dolt? I studied architecture and started college thinking I would become an architect. During a short stop over in Boston after a cruise, the tour bus guide, added a short stop at Copley Square, a place I was unfamiliar with, so I followed along. As she had us look in each direction, she showed us amazing architecture with some of it shaping many or the US' architectural styles! Without doubt, my favorite is the Venetian Gothic styled New Old South Church which many courthouses and churches were styled after! She pointed out some of the other notable buildings and the significance of their national impact to architecture. Let's not forget the Tortoise and the Hare sculptures! As for the park, I have to admit I was too much in amazement of the gorgeous architectural designs in all directions to notice where I was standing. read more

Boston Public Library, Old South Church, Trinity Church, Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel & the John Hancock Tower give it all the essentials that a touristy spot needs while being picturesque enough for all the locals/artists/students to come here & relax. In the better weather, people gather in Copley Square to enjoy the fresh air. The side of the massive Boston Public Library is across to the west. Historic Trinity Church and the Copley Plaza Hotel are nearby. The square is in the middle of Boston's great dining/shopping area (Newbury St, Boylston St, Shops at Prudential Center, Copley Place mall). Parking in the area can be a hassle, especially on weekends. Whether u are a tourist or a local or just passing through this square, one will always admire its beauty & resilience, just like one can't help but take always take another few snaps of the place read more

A visit to Copley Square was a shocking disappointment. One would think that Boston would have some amount of real pride. The park grass is full of weeds and bare patches. Trash and broken glass is unintended. Walkways are filthy and haven't been power washed in years. Homeless hang out on benches, sleep on the church steps, and congregate around water features. Sad and pathetic! Shame on Boston! read more

I am SO LUCKY to say that Copley Square is my backyard! I LOVE living near this park: green grass, tall trees, bright flowers, water fountain, dogs, tourists, concerts, famers' markets, buskers... and the breathtaking Trinity Church. THE DEAL: Tour Trinity Church very cheaply, guided or on your own. Most weekends, in July and August, there are also concerts and fairs in the park. read more

What's not to love about Copley square an iconic picture of Boston. This area is frequented by many tourists but is also a hub for transportation. Definitely worth a visit to see the architecture of the church and library, or to sit and people watch :) read more

Such a beautiful square! Trinity Church, the John Hancock Building, the Boston Public Library! This place has it all- so many great places to sit and watch the crowds go by, street performers, 3 card monty, skateboarders- this place has a little bit of everything. It's so scenic with so many public works of art between the church and the library- you really get a great view of Boston's public art here! Fortunately, I was able to overcome the fact that Copley Square is not a square at all, it's a rectangle. That really rattled me, but with a little concentration, I was able to get my proportions down. This park is right on Boylston Street, where the finish line for the Boston Marathon is! It's such a great park! There's plenty of places to chill out in the shade here, just watch out for birds! read more

Copley square is an interesting collection of businesses, people, random acts of kindness and sometimes rudeness, as well as farmers markets, events, city sponsored statues and displays etc. It is bordered by a few major Boston attractions and very close vicinity to Copley Place Mall. During dreary, rainy days, there isn't too much to see here as there is no shelter at Copley square for those caught in the downpour. But once the weather lightens up, people actually, even on bad weather, sit here and kind of just people watch. I have never been the subject of people watching so it was interesting to see all the eyes following everyone around on the streets. I think this is a nice place when it's sunny and serves as a good city center to events, but it's just kind of drab during rainy days. read more

My daughter and I visited this location while in Boston and there were so many different shops and stores and places to eat boutiques and everything there was so much. I love every bet it was so much to do in the area a lot to walk around we visited the Nike store we visited Duncan we visited a wonderful pizza spot over there it's just so much diversity and so many places to visit in that area I really enjoyed it read more

Copley Square is a beautiful, public outdoor lawn space on Boylston Street that is next to some major attractions (ex: Prudential Tower). From this square, you can see a ton of older architecture (Boston Public library, John Hancock tower, churches) etc. It looks super old New England/European and showcases some Gothic architecture. It is a really nice area to walk through but there are quite a few bums/trash near the train/bus stations. The Boston Marathon bombing happened near here. There is a fountain in the square and currently purple flowers by Dartmouth St. Since the pride parade is tomorrow, the Trinity Church is decorated with tons of rainbow flags. There are lots of restaurants, bars, cafes around the area. read more

This is a really nice park in Back Bay. There are lots of benches and you have options to get sun or shade in warmer weather. There are lots of activities here - the biggest being the Boston Marathon. The farmers markets in the fall are great. The views of Trinity Church, the Hancock Tower, Copley Plaza hotel and the Library are wonderful. The Boylston street side is not as nice. It is nice to stroll through, have a bit to eat, or just people-watch. read more

Copley is a pretty cool area. You get the farmers market on a regular basis and the lawn is well kept. Sitting on a bench looking at the Fairmont Copley Plaza and the Hancock Tower can be a very comforting view. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I work in the area or maybe it's all the nagging bums taking up all the bench space making for soem very strange moments, but I just don't feel like this area has the same allure as other squares of the city. Yes, Newbury is right there but you cannot bundle that with Copley. I can summarize Copley by saying it is a cool area to walk through and possibly sit for a moment but it should not be a focal point in regards to your trip to Boston. read more

I visited one cold day when they had a free public tour. Following the tour, visitors were invited to spend the rest of they day using their resources for free. Despite "New England" in the name, they can help with genealogical research on persons anywhere in the world. During the tour, they mentioned that they periodically have other tours that focus on the art and architecture of the facility. I'll probably have to go back for one of those! read more

Copley Square is a beautiful space in the Back Bay neighborhood, flanked by Trinity Church, Boston Public Library, the John Hancock Tower, among other historic buildings. It is lovely and bustling with people. AT and I wandered around and took pictures of everything we saw. Our intention was to find the library (which is amazeballs but remember that it is a library, so keep your "oohhs" and "aahhs" to a near-inaudible volume) and we were delighted to find Copley Square and its beauty, both in terms of architecture and people. If you are visiting Boston (Dio and Leanne! :D), this area is a must-see and is within walking distance of other Beantown attractions, such as Newbury Street and Boston Public Garden. Walk just a little bit more and you'll be at Boston Common, Granary Burying Ground, and Chinatown (just make sure you have some comfy kicks on). [#Yelp365: 104/365] read more

Class: History 101 Professor : Ms. Homegirl School: GTU (Get-chyo-self Together University) Copley Square is named after the popular painter John Singleton Copley. JSC was born in (or around) Boston and is widely known for his portraits of colonial New England political figures. ie: Paul Revere (which eerily resembles Jack Black), John Hancock , Samuel Adams etc. Hopefully you're on Homegirls level now after that quick teaching. This place is where its at if you want to get all intellectual wid it. Go when the weather is nice, take your time walking through, and if you want the best experience, do some research before hand. You have got to start being independent; homegirl can't sit here on the computer forever giving you all these golden nuggets of knowledge. Visit the Trinity Church, and Boston Public Library. Enjoy the architecture, immerse yourself in the history and find out who treaded on the same cobble stones that you be trippin' on. Extra Golden Nugget: If you plan on this being a day trip (which I highly reccomend) wear some comfortable clothing. Think of it this way: on one end of the chart we have those ugly high heeled sneaker wedge shoes, on the other end we have "ratchet". Copley Square surround by the modern and tall building around. it kinda made the square look the a small green field in this busy area. But yet, besides shops and some cool restaurants. There are couple quite famous tourist locations around. such as Trinity Church, Old South Church, Boston Public Library also located here. It's quite nice for a walk. read more

Copley square, who doesn't love this place. Nice little garden/open area in heart of Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. Boston Public Library, Old South Church, Trinity Church, Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel (built on the original home of the MFA) & the John Hancock Tower give it all the essentials that a touristy spot needs, while being picturesque enough for all the locals/artists/students to come here & relax. The square is in the middle of Boston's great dining/shopping area (Newbury St, Boylston St, Shops at Prudential Center, Copley Place mall). Parking in the area can be a hassle especially on weekends but that's the nature of the city & ultimately one will find a spot within a walking distance (unless it's the freezing winters when even a block can seem like a mile; thank you oh so lovely Boston wind). The square itself is a major player in all of Boston's activities. It is part of the route of all Boston sports teams rolling rallies/victory parades, the Boston marathon ends at Copley square, they have a farmers market here twice weekly during summers, most of the large conventions at Prudential have stands/stalls in the area, it's always part of events like the Boston book fair. Because of the picture perfect views of the BPL & churches, many an artists have painted this square in their lifetime. Relaxing on the green summer grass is a favorite at time of many ppl. The fountain & numerous statues add another dimension to this place. Meh, I don't know. I don't love Copley. It doesn't feel like much of a park to hang out in. Unless you're homeless or a skater. I pass through here all the time, taking the 9 bus from Southie into this part of town. And I have spent some time in Copley itself, but for me, its not a destination. Its a central location to move off from. Which is sad, because the location is great and there are a bunch of fantastic things surrounding it (the Trinity Church, the Public Library, etc), but the Square itself leaves a lot to be desire in my book. If I'm looking for public space to spend time in, the short walk to the Public Garden. I'll pass on Copley. read more

Copley Square is a little reprieve in the midst of the chaotic city. Flanked by the beautiful Boston Public library on one side, the Trinity Church opposite, the Copley Plaza hotel on the 3rd, and Boyleston street and the shops on the last, it is the essence of a city where history and modernity are side by side. Copley holds tons of free concerts and events throughout the summer months that bring the city of Boston together and it is the end point of the Boston Marathon. read more

I love Copley Square. If I worked in the city (or wasn't so in love with the BPL) I would spend considerably more time here. My favorite things to do in Copley Square include: People watch. Go to the farmer's market Snack on my farmer's market finds Adore my lover (the BPL) Appreciate that the Hancock was built to reflect all the surrounding architecture Go into the Fairmount and pet the dog (okay, I've never actually pet him but I have brought people to meet him. I believe he's their official "pet ambassador") Collect some freebies while people promote (best was icecream on a hot day while I walked through with the Aussie friend) Purchase some BosTix Be totally repulsed while a child plays in the fountain that a bum just washed himself in So that's why Copley doesn't quite get the five stars from me. I'm definitely a fan, but if I'm looking for a place to kill time I would look onwards to the Public Garden. read more

I love Copley Square, even if at this point I am pretty much positive that I've flashed my underwear at every single person who has ever walked through it. Thanks, wind. Love the lunchtime and after-work concerts here, love sitting on the steps of Trinity in the sun to read, don't love walking through it when it's raining/snowing and the wind is really ripping, but that's more the Hancock's fault anyway. You (or just me, the freak magnet) are definitely a lot more likely to be approached by someone strange here than, say, in PO Square, but I think the fact that it's less crowded and has a great breeze on those hot summer days makes up for it. Plus, the views are better. Although the kids swimming in the fountain ... gross, dude. Just gross. read more

You know I never really thought about Copley outside of the occasional lunch spot during the summer or whenever there is some festival the City of Boston decides to cram in the small square. Nevertheless it's one of those places that is like one of those irreplaceable internal organs of the city. It's a space that you can breathe in. While more often than not there's a hundred other people who have the same idea it's a good place to sit and people watch, read a book or check out the farmers market or have a bite to eat. It's one of those pit stops on your way to some of Beantown's oh so numerous attractions. Aside from a daytime spot, and the occasional event Copley is pretty dead at night save for an evening event which doesn't happen unless it's First Night. The City of Boston should do more with that space but for now it's a nice slice of outdoor space with potential for more. read more

Great place to just walk around with friends, hang about, read and ppl watch, just screams Boston here! They have a nice water display and the beautiful Trinity Church in front. Beautiful architecture all around so great place to take pictures. ON Tues and Fridays, they have a open market that sells fresh, mostly organic produce from the local farms. Also have some great homemade apple pie and very nice virgin olive oil!. Great for gourmet cook-wannabes like me. On Thursdays, they have outdoor concerts sometimes. It's just a great area but can get crowded with tourists and local businessmen. But, who knows you might bump into a celebrity stepping out that popular hotel! read more

Gorgeous spot in the middle of Boston! lots of food options and cute cafes in the area to enjoywith your family

A lot of lot of lot of things that you can enjoy in Boston are very close from here. Got your attention? They even have farmers market from time to time. Despite this being that kind of place, I passed by this place each time until a couple of times ago when I realized that there was a bostix kiosk here. Of course you don't have to "discover" this place only when you have a specific reason like that. It is literally in the middle of this city and a beautiful place to stroll, take a break, enjoy the weather (on a good day) or anything else that comes to mind. While there, enjoy taking a look at the rabbit and tortoise statues. They have been here long before the Boston Marathon incident but always has been a tribute to the marathon itself. Slow and steady does it the motto. read more

Beautiful church buildings, the Boston Public Library, upscale hotels and plenty of eateries surround this area. It's very picturesque, if you are looking for a beautiful backdrop in Boston for photos. The hustle and bustle of the city seemed to be forgotten, when I was here. It's walking distance to the Boston Common and Boylston Street eateries and shops. Although it was a little muddy from the rain, it was still a nice place for a stroll and just an overall awesome spot to experience some of Boston's unique culture. My family and I came here during their New Year's Eve celebration and it was filled with ice sculptures, a live band and food vendors. The prior year, we were in Times Square and this was definitely a lot less chaos and craziness, so the fams & I enjoyed it very much. It made for a peaceful holiday for us. I love this area of town. Easily accessible by any green line train to the Copley stop, you will find the Boston Public Library, Trinity Church, Old South Church, Hancock Tower, Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel, Copley Place Mall - just to name a few of the historic or important sites. Also nearby are many good restaurants and bars. Plus the square itself functions as a green space/park, with a water feature, and all the people-watching you can handle! Luckily, Robert Venturi did not win either redesign competition that decided what Copley Square would look like. If you'd like to see for yourself why I say "luckily," check out Chapter 11, Section 12 of his now classic treatise, "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." Apart from the drawings of his plan for Copley, the key component of Venturi's design proposal is as follows: "Another crutch of Modern architecture is the piazza compulsion derived from the justifiable love of Italian towns. But the open piazza is seldom appropriate for an American city today except as a convenience for pedestrians for diagonal short-cuts. The piazza, in fact, is 'un-American.' Americans feel uncomfortable sitting in a square: they should be working at the office or home with the family looking at television." Bostonians! After days of rain and flooding, the sun has re-emerged! Get out of the office and off your couch! Hang out in Boston's one and only square-shaped-square. But I think you all already know to do this, because you all already know that we (despite many of us being American), like to sit around and congregate outside. Yes, Copley Square is often full of people, including for live concerts, movie nights, tree-lighting ceremonies, and the Tuesday/Friday farmer's market that runs from late-April through mid-November (http://www.yelp.com/biz/copley-square-farmers-market-boston), proving Venturi mistaken when he claimed that "public ceremonies involving crowds are even harder to imagine in Copley Square than passagiate." He spoke of what would happen if the square involved open space: no one would come to it. His design for the square, therefore, was "not an open space to accommodate non-existing crowds" who'd never sit in the piazza. But open space it is (albeit grassy open space)--and crowds do exist. It is the perfect space for an early afternoon picnic on a summery weekend. It is the perfect place to sit around admiring the surrounding architecture--the square is flanked by such landmarks as H. H. Richardson's Trinity Church, Charles Follen McKim's Boston Public Library building (with Philip Johnson's wing right behind it--as deadpan as any of his other buildings), Old South Church, I.M. Pei and Henry N. Cobb's Hancock Tower,.... So my fellow Bostonians, get outside and carry on in perfectly "un-American" fashion. read more
