Setting foot on the ground of a common area/park that's been around since the 17th century is something amazing to me. This grassy, 8-acre public park is in the heart of downtown Salem and is a great place for walks, relaxation, photos, and more. The park is clean and well kept and provides plenty of places to sit. A small playground and basketball court is also provided. The park is dog-friendly, and dogs must remain on leash. Very pleasant place to visit and admire. read more

Very popular area with a lot to do. Lots of food vendors here and porta potty's to use. There were rides for families and photo ops too. I also saw many vendors selling things like jewelry and candles. Very nice and busy area. read more

We happen to be in Salem for Halloween and we came to the common to experience the to Salem Witches Magic Circle and to enjoy our holiday. The commons actually weren't that busy, even though the streets were a filled with trick-or-treaters. There were lots of food vendors, and merchants on site and plenty of people in costume. We did get to walk around the common and learn about some of the history of the area which was cool. It's also a really lovely green space. It was difficult to enjoy the circle unfortunately, because there were a group of pharisaic incels walking around in circles with megaphones. Parking was also pretty atrocious but it was Halloween after all. The space itself seems really lovely and I think it's great that people in the community have a place they can gather. I would definitely come here and have a picnic if I lived in the area. read more

This is the most amazing place for me. You can walk around the whole comments go around four times. It's a mile it's right handy to downtown and some of the attractions in Salem once in a while they have street fenders selling sausage sandwiches or popcorn. This is a great green space within Salem. My mom and I were there in mid-October. It was nice seeing people utilizing the space, playing with their dogs and kids. It was really enchanting with the trees and the leaves and benches. It would be a great space to walk around and then rest with a good book. I especially liked the set up that had backdrops for Halloween-inspired pictures where you could take selfies at. That was a really great touch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for that! It was nice looking at the decorations as well. The houses around the Common are awesome. Also, the school from Hocus Pocus is located here. So be on the lookout for the site. read more

We liked the Salem Common. There is a playground for kids and lots of benches and picnic tables. It was not super busy when we went (June) and it's a good place to sit down and have a snack or just rest if you've been walking around the town all day. read more

Very unlike its much larger cousin, Boston Common, it has a basketball court, a gazebo, a small World War Two memorial and little else in this wide open space. Still it is a large space within the town of Salem, and one my family and I well used for two things: 1) it was a nice quiet area to relax and catch your breathe a bit. There are a lot of fun things to do in Salem. 2) It helped us cut through crowds a lot. Salem gets plenty of tourists. Many of them congregate and crowd the streets to and from the landmarks in the city. By crossing the common a few times, we were able to save time and frustration with people and get to our destinations more quickly. Not sure if this would work, though, during its super busy time in and around Halloween, but it worked for us when we were there in July. The Common, though, needs a bit more to be a better park for the town. Then again, I went to a park in Salem (which I will review) which is as small as a standard bedroom in a house.... so maybe parks in Salem need work generally speaking. read more

It is a nice enough park to stroll through. There isn't much to do however. There is a memorial or two. One gazebo and LOTs of un-housed individuals. The grounds are well kept and it reminds me of a low-key version of Boston Common. It's always nice to have a green space in the heart of the city. Definitely worth a quick stop by! read more

While parks typically get added D-love for being as pristine as possible, the lack of decorative perimeter fencing, seasonal fauna (save a few leafy trees) or other terrain upgrades make this plot a basic swath of open land. Thanks, oh mighty gazebo, for trying to spice things up, but this Common is just too, well, common. read more

While Salem Common is nowhere near as big as its cousin, Boston Common, this is a nice park in the heart of a very hip town. For my California readers, Salem is kind of like Berkely, only a lot cleaner and flatter. It is funky and fun with people from all walks of life enjoying the city. The Common has a very nice playground for the kids. There were a lot of families there the day we came. For the parents, there are places to sit in the sun or shade. I am sure there are some great concerts and events in the Common every summer. I would love to see more parks like this in Orange County. read more

Your experience at this park will definitely depend on what you are looking for. There are a couple benches, trees around the perimeter, and wide open spaces in the middle. There is a gazebo, a basketball court, and a small playground. Wide open spaces are great for a day in the sun without the sand (Just don't wear a bathing suit unless you want really strange looks :D) They are better though for an impromptu game of soccer, or to play with your dog. This place is also lovely for riding a bicycle. You can ride in a circle without many people that walk like they don't care or want to be run over. You don't even have to bring your own! Ask at the Hawthorne hotel next door about the Salem Spins programs, where you can rent a bike and helmet for free during the summer! (as long as it is returned by dusk). Despite this, I long for more shaded areas, more trees, and more spaces to rest in the shade without being on a bench on the perimeter. Sometimes you want to lay on the grass, or sit in a foldaway chair and read, or listen to music without an amount of sun fit for a beach. Park is also well kept, aside from the fence and archway (which looks like it is about to fall). read more

Any amazing park! As you walk the perimeter of this large public space, you'll think you're travelling the world. In this corner, Russia. Wait, that's just the stench of vodka-soaked bum sleeping on a bench. Walk further, and you'll smell Mexico. Oops, just a tequila-soaked bum on a bench. Ah, but then, the Midwest... but of course, no. You guessed it, a Budweiser bum on a bench. On the plus side, there are a lot of benches, decent shade around the edges, and a nice playground in one corner. There are also numerous special events held here. Chief among them are the Witches Cup bike race, the Pride festival, and Halloween activities. On the minus side, bums, and a crappy neighborhood association who treats this park like it's their personal property. read more

What can't you like about this park. Large open green space.... Gravel track around the common and beautiful gazebo. The iron fence around the park is in need of a bit of restoration and an old archway is as was well. This park has a basketball court and a great playground for the kids. I love that it's walking distance from me. There are no public restrooms here and plenty of street parking. read more

Perfect place to stretch out on a sunny day & read, visit with folks, or watch the clouds. Salem Common is well maintained, clean, open, & the playground is always booming with kids. It's huge, too, so it's nothing for there to be one or two soccer or flag football games going on simultaneously, while other folks relax or run the path around the grounds. I work on Washington Sq. North, facing the common, & enjoy watching the going on's from the window during the day. The city often has events there & you're sure to catch a few wedding parties posing for photos on the gazebo weekly. I also enjoy bringing the dog over here to run & meet other pups now & then for a change of pace from our neighborhood park up the street. Aesthetically, it's all pretty plain & could use a little sprucing up, perhaps, but that would be the only downside to this park. read more

Such a large open space! Salem Common is very beautiful. It's no Central Park or Boston Common, but it is a nice space for a gathering, playing fetch with your dog, going for a run, or just sitting and people-watching! It could use a statue or two, a playground, or some more trees, but I still think it is a nice open area in a lovely town. read more

I love the Salem Common. The gazebo in the middle always makes me feel like I live in Stars Hollow :). I love the small town feel when every night around the same time all of the dogs and their owners come out to walk and socialize. It's a very nice gathering area. It's not huge, but it is a quality spot for people watching, frisbee throwing, picnicking and jogging.
