Coolidge Corner is circling the drain, I'm afraid. It used to be the heart of Brookline, with restaurants, cafes and shops, but it has turned into a corporate hub, with only a tiny drop of independence left. I appreciate Trader Joe's, even though it's a chain, and I like the Booksmith, the movie theater, the random sports bar and thai place. Try the puzzle store and the Pear Tree, the Goldsmith Jeweler's and Wild Goose chase (for useless cool presents). But on the other hand... Zathmary's closed and now there is a Panera. Qdoba. Starbucks and Pete's half a block away from each other. Barnes and Noble. The Gap. 2 CVSs. And to add insult to injury... not only did they open up a Sleepy's down the street, a real eyesore, now they're building a giant commercial center to make space for a Staples. Seriously. Level the T, the playground, the creperie and the Coolidge, and build the Kmart mini mall already. You know it's coming. read more

It was snowing when I was staying in this area and it was pretty! A lot of food choices but not a lot of GOOD food choices. A lot of the places were just ok in terms of food. I did like one of the Thai places because it served a Northeastern dish that is hard to find in the US in general - especially Los Angeles (which contain the most Thais) The train is perfect to go to and from the area. Coolidge is just cute. It really is a great place to bring people or be a local. You can go to a non-commercialized movie theater, my gym, Trader Joe's, small retail shops, coffee shops, etc etc. I'm still exploring the restaurants of Coolidge, but there's so much to explore! The location is also great. You can easily get here from the city and vice versa. When I lived on Beacon in Boston I would make the easy walk to Coolidge frequently. Every time I needed a present for anyone I would venture out and meander through the shops until I found something. Now that it's the site of my test centers, I spend a good amount of time out here. Every six months I spend a lot of time studying in the coffee shops before, hours taking my exams, and a big purge fest at TJ's after (345083408 appetizers, cheese, crackers, and three bottles of wine frequently accompany me home). I love the neighborhood feel of Coolidge and will return frequently. But dearest Coolidge, you need a bar. Please? Just one? read more

Eh. I don't know what there is to really rave about Coolidge Corner other than the architecture and Coolidge Theater. Trader Joe's is a corporate warehouse market in disguise, even if it does sell liquor here (and prepare to be harassed by other customers, pushed, shoved, and wait in line for 10 minutes); Peet's is great and the people there rock, but there really is better coffee around; there's a conservative democrat atmosphere (BU girls in Uggs slowing down sidewalk traffic, business suits shoving you out of their way, yuppie moms and old people almost running you over on your bicycle, Greenpeace on every corner accosting your every stroll, homeless people shouting at you to buy their newspapers) and all of the Israeli stuff everywhere depresses me as I try to increase Palestinian awareness, etc, etc. Anyway, everything in Coolidge Corner is ridiculously overpriced. You can find almost anything here in another part of the city or suburbs for much less, and with much more flavor. I understand that the area has undergone extensive gentrification over the past few years, and it's evident from the Staples, Walgreens, two CVSs on one block, Trader Joe's, Stop & Shop, Kinkos, etc. What's with all of the mean old Russian ladies? read more

This is such a nice place to go during the Weekend. Sure to some who are used to going out during the weekend in the city. But this place is very simple with little stores, nice restaurants, and an art house theater that show latest or older films. Trying to find parking is hard, so in case you are not in a hurry, you could drive around to find it, or you could take the T for a nice ride to here. In addition, the Corner has wonderful restaurants, cool people, cute shops, the coolest movie theatre in Boston, and it's accessible to and from everywhere! My Corner favorites: Firenze, Upper Crust, Trader Joe's, Booksmith, Rodney's Used Books, Paper Source, Cinemasmith, Bottega Fiorentina, Boca Grande, Paris Creperie. Little known fact: there's a farmer's market that takes place every Thursday (in the warm months) in a small parking lot here. I just moved close to Coolidge Corner from Boston and I'm really happy with the Neighborhood. Coolidge Corner will become my major neighborhood shopping and dining district. Some older people I've met here lament the loss of individually owned restaurants and other businesses, but coming from my standpoint I've got to say that I find a plethora of interesting non-corporate owned shops and eateries. The greenline zips into Boston in just a few minutes from the Coolidge Corner stop, which resembles an old time train depot. From this newcomer's perspective, Cooldige Corner is full of convenience, charm and is more pleasant than most downtown districts. Tree-lined Beacon Street is charming to look at when walking or riding in a car or the greenline. read more

Urban utopia. One only need watch the playground at the Devotion School to see that Coolidge Corner is a perfect example of how the world should be. Children of every possible ethnic background play together. High school kids get out of school and skateboard over to J.P. Licks for a cone in the summer. Elderly people are able to stay active well into their early hundreds (it would seem) by walking everywhere with their carts full of plastic bags and random household items. Sure, it's obnoxious that the only sports bar (the Clubhouse) won't seat you unless you have every last member of your party AND you agree to order at least $10 worth of food each, even if you're going to drink 6 beers each. It also annoys me that drivers in the TJ's parking lot pretend to not know "the Rules" from time to time and will honk and mouth obscenities at me for pulling into a spot that was so obviously mine for the taking. Coolidge Corner is like the lesbian love child of a faux, cartoonesque Disney World village and a little-less-than-metrosexual buzz town. Here you have a crowd, pretty much all the time, of young 20-somethings, exploring the nooks and crannies of the upper-class college life. The restaurants are kicked up a few notches, yet there are still some corporate sell-outs hiding in the mix to satisfy the yuppie desire for convenience and familiarity; an ultimate jones to fuel the machine... For real though, CC (not to be confused with it's fraternal twin brother Cleveland Circle) has a good mix of yuppies, college kids, and even young families, all coexisting in sweet harmony.... or something like that. Coolidge Corner is without a doubt one of my favorite parts of Boston (technically Brookline.. I know), second only to the Back Bay. Coolidge is great because it offers a wide variety of food, has retail shops, and wonderful coffee shops and a move theater. Being that I work in Longwood it's an added bonus that I get to walk to work every day. With Kenmore, Washington Square and Cleveland Circle in such close vicinity the options are endless and let's face it - the C line is worlds better than the B. This may stem from my time in Allston and wild hatred for the B... but I'm sticking with it. You can also hop on the 66 if you want to head to bars in Allston or hang out in JP. read more

Responsible owners. - 2 CVSs, Walgreens and Gap -This place does get overran with stay at home mothers and their little bratty kids in their $2500 dollars double sided triple decker strollers. I just dont like bratty kids. And the fact that they take up the whole sidewalk and I have to walk behind while listening to how Kaleb, Chase or Madison had such a hard time pooping last night. This is the best sports bar in the area. We stopped by for happy hour to eat and the food portions are out of control. The manager greeted us and suggested we order a half order of nachos to spilt for the 6 of it. He was right the half order was extremely big. Next I got a Ted Williams burger that had cheese and onions and it was very good. The fries where amazing and I couldn't finish them. They have a nice beer selection with a good selection of local beers. If you are within walking distance make sure to come by for a drink and some food. read more

This one of my favorite neighborhoods in the Boston area, yet it I visit it so rarely due to Dorchester being on the other side of the world by train. And who wants to drive? I love love the theater, I can never decide if it rises above Kendall or if they tie. The restaurant selection is quite wonderful, including Curry House (go for their wonderful lunch buffet) and Fugakyu (try the Una-Coco Makimono). Peet's is always the better alternative to Starbucks and I've done homework in the gigantic Panera Bread (especially on the outdoor/indoor front patio in the spring). Great place to run errands and more. You have Trader Joe's, the post office, CVS and Walgreens, and other stores like the Paper Source to fill random niches. Living near here means you don't really have to drive around and can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the crowds instead of flipping off drivers in Boston traffic. I miss living in striking distance so much that whenever I'm anywhere in a two mile radius, I invent an errand to run so that I can stop in the Booksmith, check out what's playing at the theater, and grab a snack. read more

I work in Coolidge Corner, so I get to enjoy it every weekday. It has everything you could need, Trader Joe's, the postal office, plenty of food, a little bit of shopping. You even have places that sell the bare essentials, like CVS and Walgreens. There are a lot of banks in the area too, which lets your mind rest that you won't have to pay yet another ATM fee. I've worked in the area for about 4 months and enjoyed it. There's always somewhere to go eat. There's Mexican, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, etc. There are a couple of cute clothing stores I haven't been to since they look on the pricey side. I keep meaning to go to the Coolidge Corner theater there since they always have good movies playing. I really enjoy the area! read more

If you ignore the Qdoba (which has huge, delicious, inauthentic burritos), the Starbucks, the Peets, and the GAP/Baby GAP, there are some great shops at Coolidge Corner: The Brookline Booksmith, the Pear Tree, Paris Creperie, and Mint Julep...not to mention the Coolidge Theater, which shows movies that are, on the whole, a lot more interesting than what you're going to find at the Loews, etc. And if you're heading there out of utility, there's also a Walgreens, a CVS (or two) and Trader Joe's. In general, it's a pretty area and nice to stroll through. A word of warning: the Coolidge Corner T stops (both inbound and outbound) are always crowded. Why would I want to live anywhere else? Coolidge corner is great because it has everything I need -- restaurants (both fast, takeout places, and nicer sit down restaurants), shopping, pharmacies, trader joe's, a movie theater, and a ton of interesting people. Only downfall is that it can get crowded -- but I think this is because of all the dumb people out there that walk down the sidewalk with their double-wide strollers and/or while talking to the other five people that are walking right next to them rather than in front or behind them, so they take up the entire sidewalk. This makes it quite impossible to 1 - have people walking in the other direction walk past them, and more importantly, 2 - if you are going in the same direction, walk PAST them because they are always walking only a bit faster than molasses. I don't get it. Why do you need to walk down the already too small sidewalks 3 people across and walking super slow? Or better yet, those big groups of people who stand in the MIDDLE of the sidewalk. Oh is it too hard to stand on the side of the sidewalk? You annoy me. Please leave Coolidge corner now, thanks. Oops. This is my hood and has been for the last couple of years. You realize that living in Brookline isn't much more expensive than living in neighboring Allston and the difference in quality of life is incalculable. Allston is a dump with no law (great when I was a student on Glenville Ave) and Brookline is a self-sustaining community with small town appeal and big city access. First of all, the C Line is the best of the disastrous green line trains. They all suck, but this one does so the least. Whereas the B line from Harvard Ave. takes an hour to get anywhere and has a dozen stops before it even gets under ground, the C flies down to Kenmore in 4. Up yours BU! Ya gotta love Giotto's (Trader Joe's), where I get some serious deals on good food and always try a new kind of wine. Usually whichever $5 bottle of red has the coolest logo. The Booksmith has your reading needs covered. if only the Cinemasmith downstairs was still around. I guess me and my Netflix fucked that up. Across the street is The Coolidge theater where you can see indy movies and silver screen classics. There are tons of restaurants and locally-owned shops to browse in. Kupel's bagels are the best in Boston, hands down. Kids of all ages constantly run around and a nice day at the Devotion field and courts is a sporting free-for-all. The police presence is high, but that's what keeps the bums in Allston and away from our corners. The 66 Bus rolls through constantly and will get you to Harvard Square in under a half hour. My one complaint is that there are only two bars and both are so-so. If there were a couple more young adult hang-outs to match the 20-something population that loves living here, Coolidge would be the ultimate jump-off. read more

I love Coolidge Corner. It is the perfect mix of urban and suburban. It is so close to Boston, totally accessible by both bus and train, and yet it's nice and quiet as well and clean. There's also so much going on in terms of shops and restaurant. I love the Peet's coffee shop and Paris Creperie. There's a Trader Joe's right when you get off the T and a Walgreens and so many CVSs. Seriously, are there not like 3 of them alll within a block of each other? Coolidge Corner also houses a branch of the Brookline Public Library which is especially nice, and who could forget the Coolidge Corner Theater. Cool independent movies and really awesome popcorn! For 4 years I lived off Babcock Street that lead right into Coolidge Corner. We moved this summer to Newton and I am having Joni Mitchell style reflection about 'you don't know what you got 'till it's gone.' I miss the restaurants, coffee shops, little parks, book store, and movie theater. Hell, I even miss the sex shop in the back parking lot along Harvard Street. I miss having a craving for fro yo and walking for it on a hot summer's night. I miss getting off the T, stopping in Trader Joe's for some dinner and 2 buck chuck before walking home. I miss tacos, bagels, falafel, crepes, book signings, and colorful protests. I am just a few miles away but it's a different world. I grew up in Coolidge Corner and I still love it today. It has changed a lot. The McDonalds brought a lot of much needed realness to CC. It also made CC smell like rotten hamburgers in the summertime.....oh wait, for some reason it still smells like rotton hamburgers 7+ years later. In McD's place is now a high traffic Panera & a gourmet hipster pizza kitchen. sure, its more corporate, more yuppy, way more hipster, and slightly more pretentious than in my time living there and whatever edge CC once had has been stripped of it one CVS and bank at a time. It also was a sad day when they closed the barnes and nobles an replaced it with an $80 per month women's only gym but CC will always be that special place to me. read more

Love love love love love Coolidge Corner so much and now am moving back to the area because of this. The atmosphere is great here and other than some traffic and a school causing congestion from time to time things here are great. There are a few good shop and some really great little places to eat all kinds of foods. The theatre is great for watching classics during the week/weekends and the area is great for people watching if that's your thing. Trader Joes and a Stop & Shop right down the road and plenty of pharmacies in the area too. The single reason for a 4 star and not a 5 star rating is the people soliciting saving this or that nearly everyday and nearly all year round. They are on every corner of Coolidge corner and next to impossible to avoid. I realize their cause if probably pretty important yet I often see the same person everyday and still get asked to help their cause. This just gets annoying because the only options are to be rude and ignore them or to keep saying no. read more

This is the first neighborhood I visited in Boston and the first one I moved to later on. It's a very cute, quaint mix of local independent storefronts and sadly an overwhelming surge of big name chain stores. Yet I think it still carries the old world charm of a small town with some incredible draws. The Coolidge Corner Theatre is a must see, as is the Brookline Booksmith, Party Favors, Bowl and Board, Chef Chows, Trader Joes, The Arcade, 7 Subs, Mr. Sushi, Fugakyu, Anna's Taqueria (2 locations in Coolidge Corner, can't beat that), My Thai, and the best restaurant of all... ZAFTIGS! Coolidge Corner is a quiet locale with a high mix of young professionals, richy families, a super diverse culture and more. One of the best towns in Massachusetts without a doubt. read more

I moved here about 4 months ago from Jamaica Plain [I am now living 2 blocks from Pete's Coffee] I am much happier here. Upsides of Coolidge Corner +Always clean. +Great shopping. +Pedestrian Friendly +"Village" feeling, despite it's proximity to downtown. +Quiet at night and safe. +Direct and easy proximity to the C line and downtown. +As I am a gay man, I have to watch my back most places that I go. Here, I feel much more secure when walking late at night and don't feel as uneasy as most other parts of Boston. Downside of Coolidge Corner -Stores close very early. -"Nosy" feeling to the neighborhood. I have very fond memories of this place from my childhood. I used to come here to visit my Nonna; we would go shopping and take the trolly to different locations. I used to feel very grown up when we boarded the train at St. Paul outside her Beacon Street apartment. None of the errands that we ran were very exciting or interesting. I remember groceries, bagels, and radio shack. The trains seemed so large, and being able to stand where the cars were attached and pivot with the trains as they took turns and wound up the hill to Cleveland Circle, overly exciting. There was no real feeling of community in this area. My mother grew up here, and went to school, and had a few friends who stayed in the area, but I never really met any of their kids. It's a solitary kind of neighborhood. People have a tendency to walk in their homes and not talk to other people. My Nonna lived in the same apartment for my whole childhood, and I'm almost positive I never met any of her neighbors. We used to go trick-or-treating in her neighborhood as well, and though the average incomes have always seemed higher than the neighborhood I grew up in (Central Square, Cambridge) people were not overly excited to see three little girls in home made costumes asking for candy, if seemed more like a chore. There are a lot of shops here still, not many local restaurants that really stick out in my mind as fantastically good that you would travel to. If you want a bagel or some good Japanese food, it's the place to go. These days you are more likely to find tons of nail salons, and stores that sell little knick-knacks. There is only one bar that I know of in Coolidge Corner, and having been there twice to celebrate birthdays with my parents (who live spitting distance from the bar) I haven't wanted to go back, nothing fantastic. It's nice to come here and watch the marathon, the area seems to come alive around events such as this. Even though it's a striking example of the "walkable city" that Boston and the surrounding cities are, it doesn't have the "heart" that I have found or felt in many other neighborhoods, or squares in the area. My parents recently moved back to Coolidge Corner, after 27+ years of being denizens of Central Square. People still think my parents haven't moved because they are in Cambridge so often! It's almost as though you are invisible in Brookline... My particular beef with Brookline is that you can't park on the streets for more than 2 hours at a time, and if you do they can ticket you. The signs that say there is only two hour parking (starting at 10AM!) are at the "entrances" to the city - keep your eyes peeled for those! No overnight parking, so the cost of living in the area is thusly raised AGAIN because you have to rent a space for your vehicle to be housed overnight - unless you want to fight with weather, timing and everybody else in the world for an overnight space on Commonwealth Avenue... Which I don't suggest, at all. The libraries are nice, and have lots of resources and programs especially for the population in Brookline who speak/read Chinese or Russian as a first language, which is nice to see that they still care about things like that, and have made space in the stacks and grants (or however money gets doled out for public libraries) to keep this up. There are a few really nice parks in the area as well, Lars Anderson and the Rose Park (at Brown/St. Paul) are some of my favorites. If you drive by during the day you can see a flurry of activity as nannies and little children enjoy the field or swings. read more

Although Coolidge Corner has some annoying features, I want to start off with the many, many things I love about this neighborhood. Besides having a lot of fun and often quirky local businesses, it is a fantastic place to spend a few hours walking around, browsing, or people watching. I particularly love the locally owned shops, including Brookline Booksmith, Wild Goose Chase, Party Favors, and The Pear Tree. Also, I've also experience consistently friendly and helpful customer service at the stores here. Even the post office workers are friendly (despite the fact that they are usually dealing with a massive line of customers). As Scott B. noted, it does a Disney World feel, but that is part of its charm. Unfortunately, the few annoying aspects of this area are hard to overlook. This is an insanely busy neighborhood, particularly on the weekends. On Saturday and Sunday, the stores are crowded, the lines at the post office are long, the restaurants are full, and the sidewalks are difficult to navigate. Adding to craziness is the seemingly endless flow of charity muggers, who are often in the area but are in full force on the weekends. Between the children on scooters and bikes (on several occasions, I've seen parents try to teach their children how to ride bikes here on the weekends, which might be charming if the sidewalks weren't busy) and the canvassers, Coolidge Corner sidewalks can be a battlefield during weekend afternoons. All in all, Coolidge Corner is a great neighborhood. However, if you want to avoid the worst of the canvassers and crowds, you might want to go during the week or on weekend mornings. read more

Very cute and fun to walk around in, especially in the summer. The only problem is the rude pedestrians at times- but I can deal with it.

You can buy chocolate covered pretzels from Trader Joe's, a Junot Diaz book, and a dildo without leaving Coolidge Corner.

what a great place indeed! there are so many shops and restaurants to choose from - but my favorite thing is Trader Joe's and Peet's Coffee is a cool place too. :) the only thing that can make it better is if all of the restaurants all had decent dining room seating and maybe a chill lounge or something fun... read more
