A little bit off the main section of Como, in an old building which we were told by our waiter was the birthplace of Pope Innocent XI in 1611. The risotto was delicious with fresh fish from Lake Como (4/5 stars food). However, the servers were very dismissive of us (maybe because we were two twenty somethings at a nice restaurant) and it was very challenging to order. They also charged us for bread even though we didn't order any and they put it on every table and refilled it. So be aware they are charging you for everything. read more

We had a lovely dinner here on our last night in Lake Como. Service was not perfect but can't fault a packed place and being short staffed. I enjoyed the minestrone soup. The polpette's were amazing and in a very hearty tomato broth. My wife enjoyed the gnocchi's and i had a pretty decent veal scallopini. We got a nice bottle of the vino and enjoyed a good couple hours of the wining and dining. The cute outdoor seating in the back alley area was nice and cool. We made a reservation and definitely recommend doing so BEFORE you arrive. Was easy to find a block off the main Downtown Como shopping area. We were even able to get a cab from the restaurant hostess after dinner. Super nice and convenient! Pasta, veal cutlet, gnocchi???? Ugh this place is amazing!!! The ambiance is a very cool cave like area. The food is not like the ambiance it is elegant, delicious, and something you cannot have in the States. The pastas are fresh al dente and the risotto is perfectly cooked still soft but with a bite. The veal Milanese was good...... they covered the gaminess of the Veal but the battering could've been more crispy. The batter could've been lighter. On our first evening in Como we had dinner at Ristorante Sociale, a recommendation from the concierge at the hotel. It was ok but nothing special and the steak was a disappointment. We had some warm starters which were the best thing of what we ordered besides the wine of course. The pomodoro pasta was decent. The steak was cooked well-done even though we asked for medium and the red wine sauce was not good. The tiramisu was yummy so at least a good ending. And with wine, even thought I wont claim to be any expert, it was a decent meal but not worth going back for. I am sitting here right now and can't believe how great this place is. Menu has English sub titles. They also can understand and speak English as well. The veal special is amazing. What a gem of a restaurant! The waiter was amazing by explaining the specials to us twice and was very attentive to us! He also gave us a history of the building and the beautiful fireplace that exists on the first floor! The food was authentic Italian. We both had pasta that was fresh, hot and delicious and very well priced. 0.5L of wine was €4.50! Best part was these Italian mothers on the table opposite enjoying the food! There were more Italians then tourists which was fabulous. If you are in Como, this is definitely worth a look! read more

Wanted a light lunch so ordered a shared warm antipasti. It was nice. This is followed by tagliatte with pork and fried breaded veal since they were out of cal's liver. All were good. Hotel staff gave us the name of three restaurants in the old town of Como. We got to try two out of three and they did not disappoint. The staff was great with us. English speaking only couple so they were very helpful. The food was the best to date I Como that we have had. Prices were moderate. The wine the waitress suggested was incredible. This place got one star for attitude and 4 stars for food. Rude receptionist makes you feel when you come I as if you are a beggar asking for free food. We saw that this restaurant has good reviews so went there at 6:15pm. Walked in, told by a guy working there the place opens by 7:00pm so come back then. We go back to the cathedral area and sepent time waiting until 7pm. We walk in at 7pm, a lady receptionist looked at me, I said we need a table for 5. Before I finished my sentence she said "reservation??" I said we do not have...then she said emotionally Nnnoo! Then looked down and away. I wanted to give them a chance before I post the review so I said tomorrow?? She said ye how many what time? I said 5 people 7pm and gave her my name. Next night, we walk in at 7pm. She pointed to a tables in the corner said table 1! No one directed us to where is that table! Anyway we found the table based on where she was looking as we walked in. Overall 4 star food so it is good but not the best and not with the poor service. Breaded veal good not great. Spaghetti with basil also good. Wife got the veal also breaded but topped by arugula and tomatoes. The minestrone soup was average. Kids got gnocchi with basil and one with tomato sauce. It was good. Daughter got the spaghetti with chili and garlic. It does not have a visible sauce but has a chili seasoning and is a little spicy. They have a total of 10 tables. This is a cozy restaurant on a side street in Como. We received a very warm welcome and we're seated immediately for lunch. I had the carbonara. The pasta was perfectly cooked, creamy and topped with a generous portion of high quality bacon or pancetta. We also had the gnocchi alla sociale - fresh and delicious. The house cab was ok. The bathroom was clean. The staff was concerned when we didn't finish our meals, but they were just big plates. I would definitely come back if I'm ever in Como again. read more

Sociale not only offers excellent food, but also provides incredible service. My husband and I were seated and promptly greeted by our server. After spending time in a coastal city, where seafood was the only available protein, it was nice to have meat as option, so we started with the meatballs, which were delicious. I was between the saffron risotto and the gnocchi, but the waiter highly suggested the gnocchi, so that's what I ordered. If you love gnocchi, order it here. It was the BEST gnocchi I have ever had. Perfectly soft and pillowy with a phenomenal sauce to enhance it. My husband ordered something very simple, the pasta with garlic oil and pepper flakes, and said it was one of the best pasta dishes he has ever enjoyed. Since we were craving gelato, we did not order dessert at Sociale, but I'm sure it would have been just as great as the rest of the meal. If you do go, call ahead for reservations. The only two good things I could tell about this place is its location and a nice stuff. The room wasn't even similar to the photos, the sound isolation was TERRIBLE- you could hear every single word said by people taking stairs up to their rooms in upper floors. Around 23:00 there was a new check-in in the appartment just above mine and for at least thirty minutes I had to listen to a family with kids installing in their appartment hearing every single word they said. read more

The restaurant portion is on the second level, small place but it was absolutely packed. There were no empty tables yet we didn't have to wait. I got the saffron Risotto, and my husband got the pasta with mushrooms. They were both delicious, portions were right. There was a cover charge - I believe it was around 2 Euros. The bathroom is very clean and the decor is super interesting. We got the house cab in .5L and that was very tasty as well. So 2 entrees + .5L wine ended up being around 27 Euros. Two and two would have been sufficient, but everything sounded good. It all tasted as good as it sounded. The wine selections were the best we've seen in northern Italy. Wow!!! It took us three tries to actually get in but worth the wait! Food, staff and amenities were amazing! My husband had the Greenpepper steak - was not what we expected but was even better (we Americans lol) and desert - don't skip the chocolate salami!!! Pair it with the Barolo chinoto and you will.
