Over two hours hold time. Way too long to wait. Are bureaucrats still "working" from home?

The foods were analyzed for the presence of toxic elements (like inorganic arsenic, lead, and cadmium) as well as healthy elements (potassium, iron, iodine, and calcium). What I learned: The highest levels of arsenic were found in infant cereals, rice, teething biscuits, and puffed snacks. The highest levels of lead were found in cocoa powder, baking soda, baby food sweet potatoes, baby food teething biscuits, and sandwich cookies. Knowing history gives us a sense of perspective. If you think you have it tough, read history…read morebooks. We'd obtained the necessary advance tickets when I was last there in 2013 for further family research. I've done virtual visits there since then. This College Park, Maryland location is Archives II, which is solely a research facility. Archive I is in Washington, DC, which I'd previously reviewed at https://www.yelp.com/biz/national-archives-and-records-administration-washington. I have no complaints. The National Archives and Records Administration is an independent Federal agency of the United States government within the Executive Branch. It's charged with the preservation and documentation of government and historical records. Employees here certainly try to be helpful. Be aware that there are "millions of records, documents, photographs, maps, decrees, charters, videos" so impossible for employees to be an expert on all of them. So, do as much research before visiting so you have something to help you to find what you're looking for. If you are a History Addict such as myself, resist the temptation to read all that cool history that passes before your eyes here or you will never find out what you specifically came to find. The security procedures are different at each National Archives location based on many factors, including function and size of the facility, and are subject to change without notice. Rules can even change from floor to floor and employee to employee. Resistance is futile. When entering National Archives facilities, you must provide valid photographic identification and are subject to inspection upon entering, anytime while there and exiting. Just like at most IRS building, your id may be scanned as you travel from floor to floor. You are very limited on what you can bring in with you, Weapons are prohibited. There are a lot of security guards. If you have a heart pacemaker or other medical device that might be disrupted by the magnetometer (or give a false reading), ask to be screened with a hand-held wand. Surgical implants set off the security machines. If you have surgical implants, bring documentation of them from your doctor with you. On-site parking is limited. Any papers you are allowed to bring in are required to be first approved and then stamped / Permitted. Phones, their cases, and computers cases are prohibited. Computers require a previously obtained Permit. Recommend putting your stuff in clear plastic bags. Large or bulky clothes, hats, even some boots, prohibited due to previous thefts, hence why some requests come back as "unavailable". Has a cafeteria on the ground floor. Has specific times you can make a request to "Pull" an item. Be prepared that it can take a while to fulfill your request, it may be fulfilled damaged, and that it may not even be fulfilled due to previous thefts. There is a cost to get copies of anything. On this day in history 31 December: 1775 - George Washington ordered his recruiters to accept Blacks into the Army. Standing shoulder to shoulder, an ethnically diverse soldiery formed. From free and enslaved Blacks, to Native Americans, native born colonists, to foreign recruits, to women, Washington's integrated Army was a diverse fighting force for the long and grueling eight-year war. One of the most famous units was the 1st Rhode Island Regiment. The Rhode Island Assembly decreed on 14 February 1778, to allow, "every slave, so enlisting, shall upon his passing muster before Col. Christopher Greene, be immediately discharged from the service of his master or mistress; and be absolutely FREE, as though he had never been encumbered with any Kind of Servitude or Slavery." The integrated Army in the American War For Independence was shamefully the last integrated American military until 26 July 1948 (WWII ended 2 September 1945), when President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order banning segregation in the US Armed Forces. For it is essential that there be maintained in the Armed Services of the United States the highest standards of democracy, with equality of treatment and opportunity for all those who Serve in our country's defense. During World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt had responded to complaints about discrimination at home against African Americans by issuing Executive Order 8802 in June 1941. It directed that Black Americans be accepted into job-training programs in defense plants, forbid discrimination by defense contractors and established a Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC) to enforce the policy. Truman had previously appointed the first African-American judge to the Federal bench, and named several other African-Americans to high-ranking administration positions.

I managed to get through quite a few boxes. But I will return tomorrow. FYI: There is a shuttle that goes from NARA I and NARA II (and vice versa). I made a basic error navigating the check in link and stood in line calmly asking if she could help me. She harassed me and it was completely retaliatory, she admitted she recognized me once she did and that was when she told me so and to "STOP!" talking, then raised her voice at me and interrupted me telling me to stop raising my voice (I wasn't, and it was ironic because she yelled this at me). At a prior appointment attempting to get my license, I worked with her and during the appointment she told me that the customer service rep I spoke with did not know what she was talking about, I calmly and reasonably expressed my frustration that the customer service had given me wrong information (I had to make a new appointment and come back), I left. Then, during the follow up appointment this morning while asking for help during check in while speaking to me she said "I recognize you" interrupting me, literally yelled "STOP!" at me and told me to leave while I was calmly asking her a question. She completely victimized herself while acting like a bully, meanwhile the security guard was sitting arms crossed half asleep because I am guessing they are used to her outbursts and it is not indicative of an emergency. This behavior and treatment is completely unprofessional and unfair. Calm assertion from a woman is not aggression, she acted like I was a threat by being direct and composed. I missed my appointment because she refused to speak with me and she admitted it was because it was me.

I recently had the misfortune to experience what a person goes through when their vehicle is…read morestolen. It's a gut wrenching thing to go through, especially when it happens in less than eight hours of you parking your vehicle once you got home. To shorten the story, I came out in the morning to where I had parked my vehicle only to find that the lock on my door was popped and vehicle was gone. Thanks to social media, the type of vehicle I have was made known widely on how to steal it. I gave my self five minutes to freak out and started getting myself together. First call I made was to 911 to report my stolen vehicle. This is where it gets a bit unorthodox. Instead of a police officer coming to me to where my vehicle once was parked, I gave my information to the operator who then had an officer contact me. I gave the same information to the officer and was told that they would contact me at a later time with any follow up questions or information. Once I collected myself and started on my way for the day, I didn't think much of it. I went to my appointment, work and everything else I had to do that day. See, I was about to go on a long work trip and wasn't too worried about my vehicle one way or another. While on my work trip I received a text message stating that my vehicle was found, damaged but found. At first I thought I was being pranked because I have never received a text message from a police officer before. I followed up and by giving a call and was very surprised that this was true and I was given all the information needed so I could pass it along to my insurance and make plans for my vehicle to be moved. The thing with being out of town and having your vehicle recovered doesn't allow for you to do much. Over the course of the next few days I received pieces of mail (while still out of town) letting me know where my vehicle was and how to set it up. My insurance took care of all that for me. I was also made aware that my vehicle was gone through to see if anything was evidence in the vehicle. When I was able to lays eyes on it finally, it didn't look like much was done. I did go through it and found several items that were not mine and followed up with the police again. They didn't want it stating that they had no idea if it was mine, the culprits, or belonged to another victim. However, the lady I spoke too was very kind and coached me a bit on what to do next. My vehicle was stolen on a Monday morning and by the following Saturday they had found it. They were swift about it and it was literally only like five miles from my apartment. Battery dead, gas gone, inside destroyed and ransacked. But I want to thank the police for doing there job as there were items in the vehicle that had sentimental meaning and I was able to recover most of that.

The consulate is a decent place and the team there gets the job done. However, if you arrive at the time they open, the lines are astronomical and the wait time far exceeds what you might be willing to wait. I repeat, do not go in the morning. The BEST time to go is after 12:00pm in the day. They usually are skeletal due to the lunch hour but all their morning rush is done and they will get your services done quickly and effectively. If you ask to talk to someone or speak to someone, they are usually helpful and will give you what you need to know to speed up the process in Guatemala or how you can modify/provide something that will expedite your process for IN-COUNTRY processing. However, be prepared to also have to run around and do a bunch of different things to get your documents authorized or provided to you. In some cases, you can leave things with the consulate and they can mail them to you. Parking - Park on the street or nearby. Do not park behind the station in the morning. You will not only get towed, but you will get blocked in. Just a friendly reminder. Otherwise, its a great extension of Guatemala and provides a good service to those Guatemalan's who need help.
