You can get advanced tickets but we were first in line. (The Archives open at 10. If you're military, you will be escorted to another entrance for some deserved preferential treatment.) If you're there early, rush to the rotunda to see the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration. (The Magna Charta is on the lower level.) If you have any questions, find a docent. We had one question about the mural and we were treated to much more info about the Constitution. You cannot take photos inside. Be aware.

The in assuming front. Take bus C8 from Metro station.

Completed some family research. Tip: come early because there are a lot of records here. Some might be checked out. Don't be shy about asking for help. The archivists are busy but so willing to spend time with newbies like me. Shout out to Gary! He helped me so much. I found that the file I needed was checked out, Nita box of materials made me stop and cry. I found the letters that got my great grandfather out of a refugee camp. I saw my grandfather's signature and all kinds of papers. It took my breath away. I saw so many people doing all kinds of research about presidents, military men and women, and civilians. I was in the last group. So much of our history is preserved here. I will definitely come back to finish the research I have started.

The National Archives embody the history of our democracy, and in some ways, of representative democracy more generally. The famous facility on the National Mall in Washington, DC houses the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, even one of the original copies of the Magna Carta. The importance of these documents for how we understand politics today cannot be overstated -- and the monumental building at 700 Pennsylvania Avenue is thus deserving of the many 5-star-ratings my fellow yelpers have given it. But the National Archives at College Park are, to a much greater extent, the place where real research into our nation's history can be undertaken. Here, in a huge, modern edifice of glass and steel, on a nondescript suburban street nestled against the University of Maryland's golf course, stands the place where our government houses literally millions of records, documents, photographs, maps, decrees, charters, videos and, if you believe Steven Spielberg, the Ark of the Covenant itself. It would be absurd to list the holdings of the NARA, most of all, its facility at College Park. In fact, it might be an equally Sisyphusian task to list the listings of its holdings, since almost any new research endeavor seems to involve the onion-opening-analogous process of finding the directory which lists the location of index of the files of the folders that house the reference numbers for the shelves on which the boxes with the index cards may be located. If you manage to locate those cards before the next pull time, you may be just a few hours away from seeing your first document. On my recent visit, I browsed but a tiny fraction of the Guide to Captured German Records from World War II. But doing so required that I resist the temptation to look at anything from the belongings of the earliest American settlers to the material submitted in support of the findings of the 9/11 Commission. I had to skip over the Watergate Tapes and video of the Kennedy assassination only to realize that I was also skipping over the court records of Plessey vs. Ferguson and the pieces of Plymouth Rock. One critique: Photocopies of microfiched material cost 50 cents per page! And while this outrageous, outlandish price didn't hinder my institutionally-supported endeavors (I would like to thank the Byron K. Trippet Research Fund and the Dean's Office of Wabash College for their generous support at this time), such a price may present a dangerous deterrent to the underfunded forager, the amateur or the enthusiast, all of whom should have the same right and enjoy the same privilege as those who emerge from the ivory tower. In a phrase, a national treasure like the National Archives should be accessible to everyone -- lest we risk breaking from the very traditions that the National Archives embody.

The letter in which NARA defines a scarf. This sums up the national archives in a nutshell.

Due to a "technical error," this office spent years trying to recoup an overpayment that did not exist, slashing my benefits to recoup the money that I supposedly owed them and forcing me through the repeated stress of appealing their decision. I cannot count how many times I called them, quite literally begging someone (anyone) to just look at my file, where they'd be able to see that I didn't owe anything. They would reinstate my benefits temporarily, usually without any formal acknowledgment, only to cut them again. This cycle continued for over five years, and I got different explanations every single time for why it was happening. Last year, I called Jamie Raskin's office in a desperate bid for help. According to the intern who followed up on my behalf, this whole thing was due to a "technical error" in SSA's system which has supposedly been fixed. But now right after that they were finally forced to concede it was their fault, not mine, I'm up for redetermination, and the nonsense has begun immediately. They have at this point completely stopped my benefits because, and I quote, "USPS failed to deliver a piece of mail to your stated address and since you're already in redetermination, your payments have been stopped until this is all sorted out." When will it be sorted out? When the stars align. Until then, my family has to make due with a $300 bank balance. Other fun experiences at this particular branch: - 3-5 hour wait times, even if you get there before the office opens. - Being refused appointments when trying to make them. - Having requests for formal, in-person case reviews completely ignored. - Magically changing paperwork deadlines (one notice will say you have until the 28th, the next will say the 24th) - A constantly-rotating door of case workers, not a single one of which has ever returned a phone call. - The time I hand-delivered our new lease to the office, asked for some proof that we brought it to them, was yelled at for wanting proof ("we're not going to lose it!") and then they lost it. Was told two years later that I failed to update my address in a timely manner and my benefits were once again cut.

I made a basic error navigating the check in link and stood in line calmly asking if she could help me. She harassed me and it was completely retaliatory, she admitted she recognized me once she did and that was when she told me so and to "STOP!" talking, then raised her voice at me and interrupted me telling me to stop raising my voice (I wasn't, and it was ironic because she yelled this at me). At a prior appointment attempting to get my license, I worked with her and during the appointment she told me that the customer service rep I spoke with did not know what she was talking about, I calmly and reasonably expressed my frustration that the customer service had given me wrong information (I had to make a new appointment and come back), I left. Then, during the follow up appointment this morning while asking for help during check in while speaking to me she said "I recognize you" interrupting me, literally yelled "STOP!" at me and told me to leave while I was calmly asking her a question. She completely victimized herself while acting like a bully, meanwhile the security guard was sitting arms crossed half asleep because I am guessing they are used to her outbursts and it is not indicative of an emergency. This behavior and treatment is completely unprofessional and unfair. Calm assertion from a woman is not aggression, she acted like I was a threat by being direct and composed. I missed my appointment because she refused to speak with me and she admitted it was because it was me.

It's a gut wrenching thing to go through, especially when it happens in less than eight hours of you parking your vehicle once you got home. To shorten the story, I came out in the morning to where I had parked my vehicle only to find that the lock on my door was popped and vehicle was gone. Thanks to social media, the type of vehicle I have was made known widely on how to steal it. I gave my self five minutes to freak out and started getting myself together. First call I made was to 911 to report my stolen vehicle. This is where it gets a bit unorthodox. Instead of a police officer coming to me to where my vehicle once was parked, I gave my information to the operator who then had an officer contact me. I gave the same information to the officer and was told that they would contact me at a later time with any follow up questions or information. Once I collected myself and started on my way for the day, I didn't think much of it. I went to my appointment, work and everything else I had to do that day. See, I was about to go on a long work trip and wasn't too worried about my vehicle one way or another. While on my work trip I received a text message stating that my vehicle was found, damaged but found. At first I thought I was being pranked because I have never received a text message from a police officer before. I followed up and by giving a call and was very surprised that this was true and I was given all the information needed so I could pass it along to my insurance and make plans for my vehicle to be moved. The thing with being out of town and having your vehicle recovered doesn't allow for you to do much. Over the course of the next few days I received pieces of mail (while still out of town) letting me know where my vehicle was and how to set it up. My insurance took care of all that for me. I was also made aware that my vehicle was gone through to see if anything was evidence in the vehicle. When I was able to lays eyes on it finally, it didn't look like much was done. I did go through it and found several items that were not mine and followed up with the police again. They didn't want it stating that they had no idea if it was mine, the culprits, or belonged to another victim. However, the lady I spoke too was very kind and coached me a bit on what to do next. My vehicle was stolen on a Monday morning and by the following Saturday they had found it. They were swift about it and it was literally only like five miles from my apartment. Battery dead, gas gone, inside destroyed and ransacked. But I want to thank the police for doing there job as there were items in the vehicle that had sentimental meaning and I was able to recover most of that.

The consulate is a decent place and the team there gets the job done. However, if you arrive at the time they open, the lines are astronomical and the wait time far exceeds what you might be willing to wait. I repeat, do not go in the morning. The BEST time to go is after 12:00pm in the day. They usually are skeletal due to the lunch hour but all their morning rush is done and they will get your services done quickly and effectively. If you ask to talk to someone or speak to someone, they are usually helpful and will give you what you need to know to speed up the process in Guatemala or how you can modify/provide something that will expedite your process for IN-COUNTRY processing. However, be prepared to also have to run around and do a bunch of different things to get your documents authorized or provided to you. In some cases, you can leave things with the consulate and they can mail them to you. Parking - Park on the street or nearby. Do not park behind the station in the morning. You will not only get towed, but you will get blocked in. Just a friendly reminder. Otherwise, its a great extension of Guatemala and provides a good service to those Guatemalan's who need help.
