This is perhaps the most iconic landmark in DC and one you must see. It's been shown in countless movies and is featured heavily in the Planet of the Apes movies as a sure fire way to know you are "not in Kansas anymore" if you get the drift... This monument is beautiful, well-kept, and crowded as hell. It's a long walk if you are coming from the main Washington Monument lawn, but is pretty and has plenty of sidewalk/walking trail with shaded tree-lined walks and plenty of benches to stop. It's at the top of a small hilll/stairs and requires a bit of a climb and the inside is covered with the main statue of Lincoln. There is a small museum at the bottom that was closed when we were there and the reflecting pond was emptied of water with gates/fences all around it.

If you can, head here at night. We've been several times but today visited at night and it was so moving. I felt like to monument was more breathtaking in the veils of night with the spectacularly placed lighting. The smaller crowd also allowed for more reflection. A great national monument of American history.

The epicness of Lincoln National Memorial and how large the Lincoln statue is can only be fully experienced by being there (and also hearing the echo in the massive chambers where it sits). Lincoln was an attorney but a lesser known fact is that he is the only U.S. President to have a patent in his name as an inventor (Patent No. 6,469, issued on May 22, 1849, for a device designed to buoy vessels over shallow water sandbars. Inspired by his experience with riverboats running aground, his invention featured inflatable, adjustable air chambers attached to a ship's sides - Google AI).

Everyone should go to see Lincoln Memorial- this monument is fantastic! Take the time and walk the area and just take it all in (it's free) The views are spectacular and if you hit sunset just right you'll have some incredible pictures!!!

Had to commute here by bus because would have been a nightmare to park here. Very touristy, yes, but understandably so because rich in history! So much to learn from this location and lots to appreciate with how far the national has come since its roots. All so beautiful with the illumination from the sunny skies. Lots of security and military on standby, but cute to see them also walking around to appreciate the beauty around them. I will say that it is very windy here, so difficult to consistently nice photos, but thank gosh for the many people who are willing to help you out to get a nice photo op moment.

This is one of the monuments/memorials that just sticks out. You can get a good workout walking up the stairs to see him, or take the ramp, but his memorial is a must-see. Its somewhat walled, so on a windy day like when I was there, it offers a little bit of shelter. It also makes it darker so the view isn't as good. Also one of the most trafficked memorials so don't expect an up-close view unless you want to wait a little.

Amazing memorial structure. Its huge in person. Lots of steps to get up inside. Beautiful view of the pool across. Not much parking near by. Street parking is not easy. We parked at the cemetery and walked a mile over to the memorial.

Standing before the Lincoln Memorial, you realize something right away: pictures don't tell the story at all. From far away it almost looks modest, but when you walk up those steps the place rises with a quiet power that makes the world slow down. And there sits Abraham Lincoln calm, steady, larger than life like he's still watching over the country he fought to hold together. It's not about marble or size, it's about presence; the kind that makes you pause, take a breath, and feel small in the best possible way.

This was great to see in person. Unfortunately it had just been vandalized that the time we were there. But it is MASSIVE and shows Abraham Lincolns presence well. I highly recommend a trip here.

We visited the Lincoln Memorial on a Saturday afternoon in November and were surprised to see nearby construction for an addition. Posted signs announced an opening date slated for 2026. Crowds were moderate during our visit, but patience will come in handy to allow for everyone to have their photo opportunities. Statue appears to need a good cleaning refresh.

This is the Lincoln Memorial. In 2026 the memorial is undergoing renovations. It is a great place to reflect on the history of the great nation of the USA

This is a must for the history buffs! Powerful Experience with Great People and Stunning Views The Lincoln Memorial is absolutely breathtaking -- both in design and in meaning. The architecture is stunning, and the view from the top of the steps looking over the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument is unforgettable. Being born and raised in DC, this memorial brings back so many great memories from my childhood. My parents loved weekends down at the national mall and this was always my favorite stop. The whole area is clean, well-kept, and very easy to navigate as they have a wheel chair / stroller accessible ramp that leads fo the memorial instead of climbing the steps. . Whether you're into history, photography, or just want a peaceful moment, this place is a must-visit.

I was in DC for the first time, so I had to do all the touristy stuff. It was just me and Penjamin Button vs the world. I got up and at em early, because I imagine everyone coming to see Abe. I walked into Abe's crib at around 8:30am, and it was just me and like 5 other tourists. It was reverent af in here. Big beautiful spaces like this always make me question my place in the universe. I was standing there, just kind of taking it all in as my favorite Abe Lincoln quote ran through my head: "It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues." To me, it means that if someone avoids all vices they will be lacking in genuine authentic experiences. Live a little. It's how you learn, grow, and put yourself in other peoples shoes. It also makes me feel less bad about my borderline nicotine addiction. I allegedly took a quick hit of the Penjamin before moving on to check out the Washington Monument. Shoutout to Abe Lincoln, my boy deserves that slot on Mt. Rushmore. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Yes, Ariana Grande is a good answer, but I was looking for the Executive Office on 17th St! A long time ago, the love of my life used to say that this building was the highlight of her trips to DC, and I can see why. I remember walking with her in the pouring rain next to it, and taking pictures of her exposing herself in front of it. Times change... But this building never did. It's glorious and resplendent. It reminds me of something in France, but better kept, perhaps. It looks palatial. If the White House is a little underwhelming then this executive office is completely awe-inspiring. It's level with the Capitol as my favourite building in the DC area, and is the easiest 5-star rating I've given since my Cousin Daniel got drunk and showed me the ropes.

It is not merely a repository of books, but a living archive of the American story--one that reveals itself the moment you step inside. For visitors to the nation's capital, this is not optional--it is essential. The current exhibition, The Two Georges: Parallel Lives in an Age of Revolution, is particularly compelling. Through the intertwined narratives of George Washington and King George III, the exhibit captures a world on the brink--an undeclared nation edging toward war, a fragile cause facing overwhelming odds, and ultimately, the improbable path to independence. What makes this exhibition stand out is not just its historical scope, but its perspective. It does not present history as a foregone conclusion, but as a series of uncertain, high-stakes decisions made in real time. That tension--between inevitability and risk--is where the story comes alive. Accessible, visually engaging, and intellectually rewarding, this is an experience that resonates across generations. If you find yourself in Washington, make the time. Some places inform you. This one reminds you why the story matters.

The entrance to the this place to see the views is incredibly tricky to access. The Waldorf took over and shut down the way to access through the building so you'll have to walk around and find the nearly completely hidden from street view entrance. For ease, I have linked the approximate location from Apple Maps below. There is a small historic background museum when you enter following the bag search and this is part of the National Parks stamping service so if you collect those speak with the nice ranger on duty. There are two elevators to travel to get to the top, the first takes you up to see views of the Astoria and the second will show you the rooftop from the Old Post Office Tower. This view is obscured by bars that make photography challenging. Would I, who does not like views, come again? No. But!!! If you are into views this is quite nice and free so I would recommend.

I've walked past it for years without realizing it was there--the only hint is a small sign in front of what looks like a simple grassy area between the two parking garages along the walkway leading to rental pickup/dropoff area and counters. If you take a short break from your trip and follow the path up the hill, you'll be rewarded with something special: the preserved ruins of an early Virginia plantation, carefully presented with signage that tells the story of the site. The panels explain its ties to colonial history and even connections to the Custis family and George Washington. They have done a great job of the presentation with lots of display boards adn signage explaining it, great brickwork and a bench to sit and enjoy the view. Take a moment to find it.
