Makara - Today in microdrinks, Turkish tea and (in the background) Turkish coffee

After passing this place many times (usually when I wasn't hungry) and reading all the glowing…read morereviews I finally got the chance to try this place. The interior is very nice and as I had arrived just after noon I had my choice of tables. I sat by the window for a nice view out onto the street. While I was waiting for my meal I was served a bowl of warm flatbreads (apparently made in-house) and a little bowl of olives. The main course I opted for was adana kofte served with rice and salad. The lamb was cooked on skewers which are then removed before serving leaving two perfect pooh-shaped sausages on the plate. And very tasty it was too despite the slightly off-putting appearance. The salad was very nice and a generous portion too. I just about managed to finish my meal (washed down with a glass of tango) despite the flatbreads almost having filled me up. The bill arrived along with a small, but greatly appreciated, cube of turkish delight. Service and ambiance was excellent, I look forward to returning and trying something a little less pooh-shaped.

A brilliant place that Hove has to offer. If you like meat, you cannot go wrong…read more The place has an indoor barbecue!! All the meat is cooked right in front of you. Turkish food, mainly kebabs. A great array of starters too. We went for the Special Mixed Grill for two. All meals come with complimentary bread and olives. Service is friendly enough and the decor of the place is great. Great value, quality food. A great place for lunch or dinner

    AA Charcoal Grill - AA

Coming back to the Lewes Road, to take a look around and gather my pictures for Yelp, I was happy…read moreto see on the door of AA Charcoal Grill, a license from the Council which granted them to stay open until 4 in the morning. This made me happy for the people at the shop, who will now surely have a huge surge in business, and it also made me happy for all the students who can now enjoy a kebab after coming out of a club. AA Charcoal grill is not the best Kebab place in Brighton, but it's O.K. The meat is alright, but it doesn't have a really juicy and fresh taste to it, which Flame on the London Road does, but by no means is a Kebab here bad. I mean I bought many kebabs here last year when I lived pretty much right next to it, and I went back. My advice would be to go for a mixed Kebab, of Chicken and Lamb, which will set you back about £5.80 and cram it full of all the salads, as well as extra jalapenos, which is sure to not leave you hungry.

Having heard that AA Charcoal Grill did the best burgers in all of Lewes Road and…read morehaving left Concorde 2 with a particular hankering for some kind of foodie goodness, I decided to save my bus fare and walk home via AA. I soon grew impatient though, and ran most of the way there, picking up a couple of other late night stragglers who also said they were headed to the Holy Grail that is AA. Invigorated further, I quickened my step and left them whooping over my shoulder. Bursting through the door, my eyes whipped up to the price board, past the kebabs and to the burgers, and down to the mushroom and cheese burger which sounded just original enough to warrant the £3 I whipped out for it. As it landed on the grill and I dropped my change into my pockets, I lowered my gaze and saw that AA does something a little special with its kebabs... Anyone familiar with souvlaki will know what I'm talking about... Basically, rather than having a hunk of meat rotating over a heat and having chunks lopped off of it every once in a while, fresh meat, peppers, onions and the like are skewered on a metal... er... skewer and cooked over a charcoal grill. The results, are sublime... And although I resisted the urge to buy one to accompany my burger, it was only because I'd have had to find a cash point first. Next time I'm out late at night and on the prowl for munch, this'll be my port of call, and if it lives up to my expectations, a 5th* will be on the cards....

Tucked away on Hove Street, Just up from the Ginger Pig, it's not the kind of place that is going to attract a lot of walk-by trade, it's going to have to survive on reputation and word of mouth alone. The restaurant itself looks a little tacky from the outside, but the inside is like Aladdin's cave - heavy wooden beams, lanterns lighting the restaurant and exotic eastern music all make for gorgeous surroundings. The wait staff are all really friendly and helpful. I was especially pleased to be sat next to the radiator on a cold Friday evening. The place was pretty busy which is a good sign, I hope they can keep it up. The Groupon deal was a selection of meze - six hot and six cold. Some of my favourite dishes included the lamb cop, borek, saksuka and humus. The cold meze were served in little pastry dishes - you can't beat edible tableware. There was plenty of food for the two of us and we were completely stuffed by the end. Bread was served as an accompaniment, however the initial portion was quite small. We requested extra and what arrived was a much superior portion, both in size and quality. I was convinced that they would add this to the bill and was very pleasantly surprised to find it had been emitted. To finish we had a Turkish tea and coffee and a Turkish delight which were also included in the deal. The Turkish red wine we had to accompany the meal was interesting and very drinkable, and also reasonably priced. This is a great little find and I really hope that they manage to survive in their out-of-the-way location. I will definitely be back for more meze and also to try some main meals from the full menu. A great first impression.
