Tonkotsu Ramen w Chicken Katsu Karaage
    Nelson C.

Located on the edge of Oakland Chinatown. With it being Valentine's Day and a few days before Chinese New Year, Chinatown was busy to say the least Walked into Sobo and was immediately seated. Suprisingly, there was nobody else in the restaurant I ordered Tonkotsu ramen w Chicken Katsu and karaage was marinated in sake and lightly breaded. Both came out piping hot and was delicious.

We stopped by for a quick rainy day lunch and the ramen really hit the spot. We got the spicy black garlic ramen, the spicy miso ramen, chicken karaage, and gyoza. I really liked the flavor of my black garlic ramen and liked that there was an option to make it spicy. I also appreciate that it comes with a variety of fixings (chashu, half an ajitama egg, bamboo shoots, bok choy, wood ear mushroom--though the toppings for the different ramens do vary) because so many places make every topping an add on these days. The spicy miso was also good and came with chashu, egg, shiitake mushrooms, and shimeji mushrooms). They also have some more unique ramen options, like squid ink ramen, which I didn't try but would be curious to if I'm back in the area. The karaage and gyoza were pretty standard fare. Good but nothing super special, though I did like the chili crisp on the gyoza. Their matcha sour was an unexpected sleeper! Quite reasonably priced ($10) and tasty. Service was efficient, the inside was spacious and clean, and parking was easy in the structure for the Chinese plaza the restaurant is located in.

This restaurant was pretty empty, it was just me and my mom with another couple on a Tuesday night. The food was good. I ordered shoyu ramen so we can share since my mom wasn't too hungry. We were celebrating her birthday. I also got the fried tofu and bacon wrap, quail eggs. Edamame. It was nice to try new items I never seen on a menu before. The place was nice and clean. Good decoration and lighting. Service was great. Good location in Chinatown and parking garage available.

I remember being bummed about missing the squid ink ramen special during Oakland Restaurant Week. How happy I was today to find that the dish has made its way to the regular menu. While I can't say I noticed much squid ink flavor (which is true of most squid ink dishes), it was still a very solid bowl of ramen. The broth was very savory and the the noodles chewy with a good bite. Sobo has the best ramen chashu imo, incredibly soft and tender. Gotta point out today's incredibly picturesque bok choy too. Nice and speedy service. We left feeling warm and cozy.

Sobo Ramen is a cozy spot to have lunch. Somewhat limited menu, but that is OK considering you want to make sure you're in and out in an hour at lunch time. The servings are not the largest, so you won't be over-the-top full, but it'll be good enough to get you through the end of the day and back home for dinner. The noodles are thicker than some other places in Oakland Chinatown, and they're very tasty. The soup has solid flavors in it and it is not overwhelming. I look forward to coming here in the evening after work and having a drink along with my noodles.

I provided a review few years ago (maybe was 2023)and was removed by yelp or someone else. Back then they had different menu. The one I ordered and paid for $20 without meat. I asked the waitress and she said it's at the bottom and true enough there was few pieces of ground pork. Really just few pieces not even a spoon full. I thought I give it a try again in 2025. They have different a new menu now. We had spicy miso and black garlic ramen. Taste like the broth have too much MSG. The Yakitori is terrible!! The chicken skin yakiyori is boiled oily with sauce. Not fried like in Japan. Very difficult to even swallow.

Very cozy ambiance, attentive staff and quick food service! We tried the agedashi tofu, gyoza and curry katsu ramen -- loved all of them. The tofu was the perfect balance of crispy and soft with the sauce. Gyozas are all freshly made in house topped with delicious crunchy chili oil. Get your katsu on the side of your ramen - the chicken is super tender and juicy.

988 Franklin St, Ste 186 Oakland, CA 94607 Sobo Ramen is a Japanese inspired fusion ramen shop, located in Oakland Chinatown. To be exact, it's on the outside of Pacific Renaissance Plaza, along Franklin Street. The Plaza offers underground parking, but I parked on the street. I was at Sobo Ramen for a great Yelp Elite Event (YEE) back in August 2023. I decided to return while shopping in Chinatown. I honestly didn't know they closed at 3pm on Sunday. I walked in around 2:45pm, and they offered me a table. The friendly server said she remembered me from the Yelp Event. She suggested a number of dishes, I ordered the "Glazed Pork Belly Ramen." I had ordered the same ramen dish at the Yelp Event. When I checked-in on the Yelp App, I was offered a free Soju Cocktail. I decided to save it for my next visit. Instead, I ordered the Original Iced Tea. The dining room was clean and polished. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, with smooth jazz playing over the speakers. There's several tables and a bar. During our Elite Event, they placed tables together to handle large groups. My ramen came out quickly, as the staff went on their 3pm break. My server took her lunch in the dining room, and was available if I needed anything. Now the food! My initial impression was the bowl of ramen was nice to look at. It was a display of colors.... of pork belly, red onions, scallions/ green onion, and bok choy. I like noodles, and for $17, I would of liked more ramen. The rich broth was slightly salty, so I would probably order something else next time. The pork belly was deliciously tender and easy to eat. I was served two large pieces of pork belly, and two small pieces were underneath. Overall, a nice bowl of ramen with a balance of veggies and meat. I will return and try other dishes. https://www.soboramen.com/aboutus.html

I've worked in downtown Oakland for a long time and have gone here few times now. Great quick service and great food. I recommend this to everyone.

I didn't love the food but it could have been because of it being lunch and a slow day. It didn't taste very flavorful and I ate the garlic and the eggs (which I always get extra of) and it was just okay outside of that. Cute place though.

    So yummy~

Excellent service, excellent food. Right now they have this limited edition squid ink ramen that I adore. Hope it makes into the permanent menu. They also got a deals going in rn.

Solid! Came in and wasn't crowded. Standard selection of ramen nothing fancy and it came out fast. Ramen was great a to of pork in mine and service was delightful. I'd come back.

So consistently good. We come up from San Leandro to go to this restaurant. Not too far away it at all and worth the drive. I usually go for the spicy ramen, this time I didn't and I decided just to go with the flow and enjoy my ramen the way it came from the kitchen. First time I've had the cocktail also. The beer selection's pretty good they also have beer from a local brewery, I suggest a lemongrass beer! Definitely worth checking out, this place is legit. We usually find street parking.

We were seated about an hour later, but once we got in, the service was quick and efficient. We ordered a mix of items to share: * Enoki chips - absolutely addicting. Perfectly crispy with a great crunch, and the umami spice on the side took them to another level. * Chicken karaage - tasty overall, but the glaze was poured over everything. I would've preferred it on the side to keep the texture crisp. * Kani hand roll - super fresh and flavorful; didn't even need soy sauce. * Ikura & hotate hand roll - generous portion and very fresh, again no soy needed. * Garlic Knockout ramen - lives up to the name. Rich, deeply garlicky broth that was bold and delicious. * Signature smoked toripaitan ramen - flavorful without being overly heavy (which I prefer). The chashu was tender and the noodles tasted fresh. I was blown away by the food, I haven't had ramen this good in a long time. The restaurant clearly runs efficiently, turning tables quickly despite the wait. I'll definitely be back

It was good, but it felt like it was missing something to really make it pop. I really appreciated the variety on the menu, especially the starters and curries. There are so many options that I'd definitely come back to try something different next time. If you're vegan, this is actually a great spot. They have three vegan ramen options, which felt special since most places only offer one. My partner ordered the spicy vegan ramen and thought it was terrific, though we both agreed the broth wasn't as rich as we're used to. I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen, but unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The broth felt a bit underwhelming, and the pork flavor came across stronger than I expected. That said, I'd definitely come back, especially because of the thoughtful vegan options. Next time, I'll probably try the Chashu Bowl, which looked really good when it came out at another table. The space isn't very big, so it's probably not ideal for groups larger than 4-6, but it would be great for a casual date night or cozy lunch.

In the short time since my…read morefirst review, this place seems to have changed ownership, given the significant change in ambiance and decor (and good luck "grand opening" plant at the entrance). I don't understand why the owners have put a Guan Yu shrine near the ordering tablets, which is neither Japanese nor has any connection to what was at least once a JR-themed restaurant. The restaurant wasn't playing the station chimes or showing the station stops on the TVs when we were there, but instead it was totally silent inside while the TVs played random Japanese programming. There are new fan art canvases based on various animes hung on the walls, but again, they have nothing to do with the former theme of the restaurant, and everything combined just broke the immersion of what was once an incredibly unique, creative experience. I was really disappointed, especially since I brought my cousin here to try the ramen for the first time, which is at least still as delicious as it used to be. But they got his order wrong, both the food and the drink, which made for a poor impression (and also leaves one wondering how you get help for an issue like that at a place that's totally contactless and devoid of human interaction). It was good while it lasted, and while the ramen is great (went with the black garlic, added spice, and got the thick noodles), I'm not sure I'd make another trip all the way over here when half the allure is now gone. Below the screens are self-ordering kiosks where you customize everything yourself. My go-to order every time: Spicy Tan Tan Ramen -- 10/10. The broth is rich, creamy, and perfectly spicy with a sesame-infused base. It comes with ground pork, seaweed, green scallions, corn, and woodear mushrooms. I usually substitute the woodear mushrooms for shiitake mushrooms, add pickled pink ginger, ask for light salt, and choose skinny noodles. I love that you can customize toppings and noodle thickness exactly how you want. Once you pay, a receipt prints with your number. You wait until your number is called over the radio--when it happens, a train bell rings, and your number flashes above the serving window like you're boarding a train. Such a cool touch. Portions are generous, flavors are always bold, and the ramen is consistently packed and satisfying. If you're taking it to go, they offer solid packaging options so you can reheat everything properly at home. Tip: skip the paper bags--they don't hold up well. Get the box and handle with care. I come here often, and even after trying other ramen spots, nothing compares. Ramen Station is a true 5-star, contactless ramen experience. Highly recommend.

The dish took longer than expected and while I liked the addition of the baby carrots and broccolini, the broth was lacking flavor (I didn't notice much of the Meyer lemon flavor) and the noodles were mediocre. Considering the price of the dish ($28.50), I expected the ramen to be more palatable and impressive or loaded up with veggies. It would've been nice to have more toppings in the dish, maybe some sautéed mushrooms or roasted eggplant, without having to request/pay for add ons. The broth was bland and I was hoping for a noticeable, citrusy flavor, which didn't come through. My friend and I opted to order and share both dessert options. We both liked the Sticky Toffee Pudding, which was warm and comforting and paired well with vanilla ice cream. I thought the black sesame ice cream sandwich was good too. Although, the brown butter cookies had more of a crunchy, cracker-like texture and not the type of cookie I was expecting. Customer service was kind and attentive, and I had no issues there. I think the main drawback is the price for each dish and the lackluster flavor of the ramen. For 2 bowls of veggie ramen and two desserts, the total was $91+ before tip. We didn't order any appetizers or drinks, and the cost seemed too steep for what we ordered to be honest. While it was worth checking out, I am not fully sure if a return trip is worthwhile. It may be best to visit a different ramen shop for a truly flavorful dish and a better meal.

Nice spot in the afternoon! Haven't been for dinner…read more A friend and I came in late afternoon and had a few beers and sakes with a happy hour deal and ordered a ramen bowl each. The chashu buns were really good, but the ramen could've had more flavor. I would say this isn't a specialty ramen place (despite its name) but a nice, casual ramen spot to satisfy the craving.

I hit up Itani Ramen on a random Tuesday evening with some friends. The spot itself is solid. It's…read morethat medium-sized, industrial-chic aesthetic that Oakland loves. I liked the layout; the seating kind of wraps around the open kitchen, like we're all spectators in a delicious production. It's a nice design that allows you to feel the energy without being jammed up. Good space for a group dinner. I took the plunge and ordered the Oxtail Ramen (sweet potato, garlic chives, sesame, shio chicken broth). Now, I love oxtail, and I love ramen. This should've been the culinary equivalent of watching an undefeated season. The Verdict? It was... fine. You ever eat something that's technically correct--the spices are there, the texture is fine--but it just doesn't hit that emotional frequency? That was this bowl. The oxtail was tender, and the sweet potato was an interesting, earthy addition. The shio chicken broth was savory, but it frankly lacked that deep, soulful complexity, that umami punch that makes you stop mid-slurp and appreciate the moment. It wasn't bad, just not inspired. If this bowl was a term paper, it would get a competent 'C'--meets the requirements, but nowhere near the Dean's List. If you're in the area and need a decent, perfectly acceptable bowl of hot soup and a chill environment, Itani will do the job. But if you're looking for that transcendent, life-affirming ramen experience, you might want to adjust your GPS. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5 stars--it passed, but I'm not running back for seconds.
