It's a name that strikes fear into the heart of the enemy as you imagine Dukbaegi and the 46 other ronin charging furiously into battle screaming a chilling war cry... but... this is neither feudal Japan nor a blockbuster movie starring that bloke from Bill 'n' Ted's. It is, however, a relatively new and very good Korean BBQ restaurant. I had to ask fellow yelpers where I ate because this place needs a branding lesson (as in molten metal on cowhide). The menu doesn't have the name on it, instead you get a double dose of discombobulation as Korean characters co-mingle with the English words "Korean table", which just confuses the bejeezus outta me. In fact you'd be so hard pressed to find this place that I doubt anyone will ever see this review because they won't be looking for Dukbaegi. Hopefully my search engine prowess doesn't fail me now, and by entering the keyword *Makanai* which is the restaurant next door, we should see this result rise like cream to the top. So how was the food? It was delish, fresh and hot (temperature not spicy). The positives were the serving size and the sides - which consisted of little potato fritters, mini-mash, and miso soup. The downside was that it took a long time for food to come out despite the place being relatively empty. I had the BBQ Chilli Pork Hotpot and it was super tasty. It easily filled me up and I enjoyed every mouthful.

After narrowing it down to 2 choices I asked the waitress what she thought and she recommended the chilli seafood kalguksu if I liked spicy food. It was a great choice on a cold sydney autumn night. The soup was spicy and very flavoursome. My only complaint would be the chopsticks. Why do Koreans insist on using metal flat chopsticks? It makes it very difficult to use, especially with noodles. Dukbaegi is a welcomed addition to the chatswood food scene and a great replacement for where used to stand a sub par dessert house.

The menu is a mix of Korean and Japanese, and on both occasions I dined here, I had a Japanese dish: one was a sushi plate (I can't remember exactly what kind of sushi, I guess that's proof of how forgettable it was) and the other a teriyaki chicken bento box. Like I've said, not bad but not something you'd write home about. They have a BBQ grill if you want to cook your own meat, but the sets are pretty pricey too. I'd rather go to a proper Korean BBQ place if I was up for a BBQ. They have some lunch deals which are reasonably priced so it might be worth coming back to give those a try and to give this restaurant another chance.

If anyone's thinking KFC and Korean Fried Chicken are the same thing, don't - Korean Fried Chicken walks all over Kentucky Fried Chicken. Maybe it's the "cooking from the heart" they talked about on Masterchef? Everything was better. The batter was better (thinner) and the meat was better (moist without being fatty). And hey, the drinks are better too. KFC and McDonalds should really consider serving alcohol. American burger joints do! Personally, I liked the original flavour better - crispy on the outside, moist on the inside, and with a bit of salty goodness with it too. The marinade on the spicy one was a bit strong for my liking. But I still enjoyed it. Will come back. :)

Korean can be hit or miss for a vegetarian and I always feel a bit awkward walking into a restaurant and looking at the menu and walking out, so as there were no customers in there at that time I was grateful for the massive menu on the wall... I dilemma'd over what to eat as I didn't think I felt like rice, but the nice lady behind the counter talked me into the bibimbab so I went for that. Mostly just so I could say Bibimbab. My bibimbab was just as a bibimbab (fun, isn't it?) should be- a variety of Kimchi and pickles, the rice was light and delicious, miso soup and a lovely scoop of some sort of delicate mashed potato stuff. And all for under $9. I will be back, probably daily until I get sick of saying Bibimbab.

It's a BYO place which is also a plus.
