Came back to give this shop another chance. Today was excellent customer service. So I'm updated my old review to add stars as I've had 2 great experiences here now and 1 very poor experience. The gun I purchased today was a fair price. I asked about Memorial Day sales, the answer was "probably not" but he asked for me, it was still a "no"but it was a respectfully delivered no. I understand a business owner needs to protect his margins, and have price integrity to keep the lights on, hire good staff, and an everything that goes into a business, so I purchased the gun at their sticker price. Which I had done plenty of research and determined their price was fair. Good employees are hard to find, Chris and staff today were personable, customer service oriented, knowledgeable and polite. As a local business owner I can understand how hard it is to staff, and frankly I can understand a business owner maybe having a bad day and being a little short or snappy on previous response. So I'm removing the 1 star and changing it to a 4 star as this new experience significantly improves how I feel about the shop. read more

The staff is very informative and helpful but this review is simply a word to beware for anyone dealing with this store who is not a knowledgeable gun enthusiast. The primary/working owner, does not conduct fair business practices and will take advantage of those "uneducated" about gun values - i guess typical for businesses with no character or conscience. These guys are awesome!!! I've been casually doing business with SCG for probably fifteen years or so now. In fact, I think I bought my first shotgun from them when I turned 18 (Winchester Model 1300). Over the years I've come back here whenever I've been in the area and needed ammunition, or if I see something interesting pop up on their "used" list online. Over the past couple years, I've picked up a couple of cool finds. Today my experience was above and beyond though. I needed to ship two collectible rifles to an FFL in Northern California and after calling the shop was told that this was something they could help me with. I arrived today around noon and the place was packed. I was advised that I needed to speak with Greg the owner for my request. I waited patiently while the staff worked hard to satisfy all the customers' needs and eventually Greg freed up. I showed him what I was looking to do and despite how busy the store was, he professionally helped me get my hard case boxed up, verified my information and the FFL I was shipping to and got everything taken care of for me. While he was working on my request Greg and I talked about collectible firearms and he even gave me some valuable information regarding some of the collector items they anticipate getting in. Today's experience was awesome and I really want to bring more of my business down to SoCal Gun. These guys work hard and they obviously care about their clientele. Bizarre and Negative Experience + Violence Encouraged The salespeople have little interest in helping a first-time firearm shopper ... and worse? I live in a non-conventional setting (on my boat, on rural properties, etc.), so lack a main mailing address. This may indeed be a barrier to firearm purchasing, but little effort was made to seek solutions. Salesperson claimed to have explained details in a voicemail (thus not wanting to help me further), but I had kept the voicemail, and she had not. I was passed off to another salesperson with similar impatience. But the best (WORST) part: when I walked into the store to look into a .22LR pistol, the first sentence out of the salesman's mouth was "The .22LR has killed more people than any other ..." I went a bit deaf, watching his mouth moving with more ridiculous sh*t coming out, hearing little after that. I'll be taking my business (and sense of sanity - and perhaps safety - seemingly at risk around these fools) elsewhere, where some sense of customer service and responsibility at the public-firearms nexus might be found. Visited 3/20/20 during the Coronavirus pandemic to check out their 9mm inventory. They had a line outside for customers and a guy at the door to regulate traffic. Not sure what his name is but he's a heavier-set middle-age guy. Long story short, I walked up to him to find out what the deal was to get inside, and he went into an anxious rant about everyone there being serious about buying a gun and being stressed out about everything going on, yadda yadda yadda, asked if I had my firearm card, asked what I was looking for (9mm), said they didn't have it, told me he didn't have time for windowshoppers, wouldn't let me see their inventory to decide if I wanted what they had, couldn't verify their online inventory, and wrote me off instead of having a respectable conversation. In other words, he seemed like the panicked one and his inability to see past the short term indicates that he may not be too competent when it comes to business. As numerous others have stated, this place is weak. I'll take my money elsewhere. read more

I have come to this store a few times now. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Ammo wise they have plenty and have a wide selection of ammo types. Including some harder to find rounds. They sometimes have a dog that runs around and is friendly as well. Guns wise they have a wide selection and are also able to put in custom orders (as long as they are CA compliant). Great customer service! After having an appointment canceled at North County gun shop, and being turned away by another, I called SoCal Gun in San Diego. I and friends needed to do a large personal transfer of guns from an estate sale. They invited us to come in right away. On our arrival Courtney and Patrick went right to work, processing 13 packets. No complaints just friendly attitude, prompt and accurate work, and even a few laughs. SoCal Gun is now my store if choice for all my gun and ammo purchases.
