A lovely local pub in Winterbourne Down…read more This has been my family's local pub for around 20 years and it hasn't changed one bit. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

This place has tons of character and a great choice of beers ciders and ales all at a very reasonable price. There is a beautiful big garden out back or benches out front if you fancy just sitting and watching the world drift by. Pete the barman is one of lifes winners always there with a warm welcome and a joke or two for you to enjoy. Stick a lepord print thong on him and marvel at the way he transform into Peter Stringfellow oh yeah ! All in all a class bozzer in the country.

I was shocked by the refurb. ive drove…read moreby this run down pub for years so was surprised once i walked inside the funky decor, with lots of signs and collectors items on the walls. It has tv screens for sports, and darts and pool table. The garden was my favourite, like being sat in your nans back garden with lots of little orniments and flower pots. felt right at home! Friendly staff and they aprently do homecooked meals which ill have to come back try one day. There was lots of choice of booze and a proper pub atmposhere :)

There's not much else down Lodge Causeway, so you'd think they'd have the monopoly, although the several occasions I've visited its been dead inside. Not exactly the social scene of Bristol, this end of town anyway. The food is basic fayre, although the sarnies and chips are of generous size and the list of fillings is extensive. The best thing I can think is that they sell the rather unusual ale, Sharp's Doombar, a dark bitter brewed down in Cornwall. You can't find it everywhere, so a pub selling it on tap is worth a visit. The jukebox is stocked with standard indie and dance tunes, so sit back in one of the large leather chairs and dream an evening away, if you so happen to venture this far out of the city centre.

This pub sits just on the boarder between Fishponds, Staple Hill and Downend so is an easy access…read morelocal pub/meeting point for many. Good food served all day, each day and I would go to say it's some of the best modern pub food you're likey to order in the area. The pub has a decent sized well kept garden to the back and also a seating area out the front, amongst the hustle and bustle of the busy High Street. Staff are very welcoming and while its clear it's a locals pub it's also somewhere that accommodates good pub food and drinks for the odd night out/Sunday Roast. The food menu isn't huge which I think is good to keep the quality, which it does. You can expect in trend meals such as 'Mac & Cheese' & pulled pork etc as well as tradition pub favourites. However I feel the menu could be refreshed more often. I can highly recommend the gnocchi on the current menu. You can tell I've eaten there once or twice! Steak night on a Thursday is great and really popular. 2 good quality steak meals and a bottle of wine for £30. There are various themed evenings to check out and the odd event such as a cider and pork day festival that happened early this year, which was a lot of fun and family friendly to boot. All in all the Cross Hands is a good modern pub in the fishponds area that blends your classic local with good quality dining. It's not the cheapest option of watering holes in the area but is great and also definitely accommodates a wee tipple on a Friday and Saturday night!

The Cross Hands is a superb pub/restaurant and is a breath of fresh air for the Fishponds area…read more I've been in The Cross Hands from time to time over the years, but some friends (and fellow elites) recently move a couple of streets away, so I've been been in there quite a bit recently, and I've had a great time I each time I've been. What I really like about it is that it has a really cosy, proper pub feel to it, while also being a really good restaurant. The food these guys serve up is fantastic! They do a steak night which is every Thursday which is 2 steaks and a bottle of wine for £30, and with the quality of the food its a great deal. They have good outside seating areas at the front me back and have a brilliant hog roast and cider festival in the summer, with live bands and lots of banter. Sunday Lunches are also really good. But it's not all about the food, however good it is. This is a really good pub that feels like you're in your local, even if it's the first time you've been.
