The a Ethicurean is a prefect place to go on a special occasion, for those if you with an adventurous palette and feel strongly about where your food is sourced.
I have visited three times - once for tea and cake in the garden (the restaurant was full), and twice for a weekend lunch when we remembered to book ahead. Every time it has been a wonderful experience, it is a truly special place.
The menu at the Ethicurean is entirely seasonal, local and ethical British produce - and much the of produce is sourced from the barley wood walled garden, foraged, or is incredibly local. The most ethical restaurant I have been to, and I much admire them for it. Given the 'limitations' on the produce due to the ethics, the chefs need to be even more inventive and imaginative about the dishes they create - and as a result produce the most fantastic food that I have never seen any other restaurant do. Inspiration drawn from the local environment, it is very, very special and sometimes quite unusual.
As someone who enjoys cooking and eating a great deal, going to The Ethicurean is a real eye opener, and gives you lots of ideas to take away and try at home. When we visited I had to ask the waitresses what certain ingredients used in the recipes were, which is a real enjoyment factor for me.
I really hope that a loved one buys me the cookbook for Christmas, keep me on my toes!
Top tips
1) try the cloudy apple juice, perhaps the best in the world, and take home a bottle for a special occasion
2) if you don't have room for dessert, buy a piece of cake to take home an enjoy later. Their toffee apple cake is heavenly, and the chocolate milk stout cake isn't bad either. Yum yum yum!
3) leave time to take a wander around the beautiful walled garden. It gives you a sense of appreciation for the food that you ate, and will inspire you to get growing yourself.
4) If you love a good walk, combine your trip with a circular walk around Wrington and the woods. read more
